Since 1965, Jongewaard's Bake N Broil has been a Long Beach gem, famed for its comforting chicken pot pie and irresistible selection of homemade desserts.
"Jongewaard's has been supplying Long Beach’s Bixby Knolls neighborhood with blueberry pancakes and scrambled eggs since 1965. Aside from the huge menu of diner staples, focus your attention on their famous pies. There’s a flaky chicken pot pie that comes with your choice of soup or salad (get the cheese-topped french onion) then move on to dessert with key lime pie and a slice of coconut cream to-go, which will inevitably be eaten within minutes of returning to your car." - brant cox, sylvio martins, garrett snyder
"The Bake N Broil is a Long Beach institution. They’ve been open in Bixby Knolls since 1965, serving diner food and incredible pies and cakes. Although there will probably be a wait when you arrive, if you’re cool with sitting at the counter (which you should be), just grab a seat when one opens up. The menu is huge, but you the smart ones go straight for the chicken pot pie. It comes with your choice of soup or salad, and though it might seem counterintuitive to get soup with a chicken pot pie for lunch, definitely get the French onion. Now isn’t the time to start holding back. But save room for dessert. Everything from the red velvet cake to the 10+ types of pie is worth trying. " - garrett snyder, nikko duren, brant cox
"If the thought of eating chicken pot pie on a rainy day isn’t appealing to you, there’s a decent chance you’re an A.I. and you don’t even know it. For all non-robots who do find creamy baked chicken tucked inside of pie crust appealing, head right to Jongewaard’s. This diner/bakery has been in operation since 1965. The menu at this Long Beach institution is quite large, but stick to the tremendous chicken pot pie, and snag a piece of red velvet cake for when you’re home in bed later. " - Brant Cox
"Long Beach pop-up bakery San & Wolves Bakeshop will open its first brick-and-mortar location in early 2024 on the Fourth Street Corridor. Kym Estrada founded the plant-based Filipino bakery out of Brooklyn in 2017." - Mona Holmes
"You’ve baked the bread. Put scallions in a jar. Hell, you’ve even washed all of the loose change in your house by hand in a frenzied attempt to distract yourself. But yet, you’re still left with the overwhelming feeling that existence is chaos and not one thing in this world actually matters. This is serious - it’s time to bring in the chicken pot pie. Specifically, the one from this old-school diner in Long Beach, where chunks of roasted chicken, carrots and peas are mixed in a creamy filling and tucked into a buttery, flaky crust. Will it take away your increasing fear that life is nothing but an empty void? Probably not. But it’s also harder to feel it when you’re eating chicken pot pie. Get the red velvet cake for later. Jongewaard’s Bake N Broil is available for takeout, call (562) 595-0396 to order." - kat hong
