Restaurants Can’t Survive Customers’ ‘Everything’s Back to Normal’ Expectations - Eater

"Nearly five months after Joon closed, the industry is far from clear of the COVID-19 wake. On December 16, 2020, my husband Seth and I opened Joon with the goal of crafting a restaurant with a different structure... Our menu consisted of three to four specialty sandwiches, freshly baked bread, sides and condiments, and a smoked rotisserie item... We pulled together our patio service three weeks after requests began. That weekend we experienced our first line down the block." - Saba Rahimian

Yelp
Awesome artisan pizza! Artichoke was delicious, also. Will skip appetizers next time and have more pizza to savor. Very nice indoor and outdoor seating. Sat outside in the nicely shaded area since the weather was nice. Service was prompt and friendly.

Yelp
Casa East Sac definitely has the charm and quality of a locals favorite. Very inviting space, the staff is friendly and attentive, and the food is memorable. Parking can be a bit difficult though. We came for Sunday brunch and everything we ordered was solid. The pizza had a great crust and flavor, the French toast with strawberries was a crowd-pleaser (can share), and the shrimp cocktail was surprisingly fresh for a brunch menu in Sacramento. My one critique and the only reason this isn't 5 stars is the menu. I came in hoping for the pancakes I'd seen online, but they weren't on the menu that day. The offerings seem to rotate, which is fine, but it would be super helpful if the menu online matched what's actually available in-house. Small fix that would go a long way. Still, I'd gladly come back based on what I experienced.

Yelp
First time at Casa East Sac and it definitely exceeded my expectations. I had heard wonderful things about this darling place but I am always leery with that much praise...worth every positive feedback! So cute, cozy, and so charming on the inside. Arrived party of 4 for brunch on a Sunday. We all ordered something different and loved it. I do not understand what is going on with their bacon...but it's magical! Service was polite and attentive. Looking forward to go back for dinner...which I have heard is fantastic too...which I tend to believe. Recommend!

Yelp
Whenever I'm in town for work I always make a reservation here. The food and service are incredible. The staff are super nice and welcoming. I enjoy sitting at the bar top watching all the action and choosing what to order based on what I see. The beer and wine selection are excellent as well as the delicious salted chocolate chip cookie to end the meal. I highly recommend this place if you're by yourself or in good company. Support this family owned business!

Yelp
Came here on a late Sunday morning with my grandmother & what a great choice! It was around 11ish when we arrived, we waited maybe 5 minutes and had a table cleaned up for us. The place was busy but not packed, seemed like tables were turning over quickly so that's always nice. Our server was sweet and prompt with bringing everything out at a timely pace. My grandmother got a coffee, and the French toast - between us all, her being in her 80's the bread was too tough for her. Sour dough wasn't a correct choice for her, I do wish they had another softer option for the French toast but it was tasty. I ordered an orange juice and eggs Benny. They were delicious. Both plates were huge! We did not finish. Nice place for a quiet, quick brunch with yummy food options. Thanks for the experience.

Yelp
Overall one of my favorite places to eat in the Sacramento area. Owners Steve and Teddy have worked extremely hard from the bottom of the industry to winning awards such as best bacon and best burger in Sacramento to building a solid brick and mortar restaurant. I would call their ever updating menu truly New American. With influence from all over Europe blended into some fantastic meals. One of my favorites is the simple roasted chicken. Incredible flavor, served hot and moist. A winner for me. Casa East Sac is most definitely worth giving and try, I'm pretty sure the service and food will bring you back.

Yelp
I came here as a group of 7 for a specific sensitive occasion and the restaurant was more than accommodating for us. I appreciate that parking is fairly easy (if you go earlyish, we went at 10:30 a.m.), that it's not overly crowded, and they take reservations. I love their eggs benedict and the desserts were delicious. Staff was friendly and the vibe is lovely. Highly recommend!!

Yelp
This is a cool spot- great for golden hour, spring and summer days. The outside seating area is the key here. Food is alright- got a steak that wasn't great. Small menu which is fine, actually preferred but I thought quality was what I would describe as "mid". But not bad at all- recommend paired with the ambiance and drinks are great too. Recommend splitting a bottle with friends or date night

Yelp
It was a beautifully decorated quaint place and location. We were seated right away as they opened-we also had reservations. The Sunday brunch menu is straight to the point. The breakfast pizza and French toast was a good size for sharing.

Yelp
Came for Saturday brunch (reservation). The place is quaint and more intimate. Our helping human, Alexis, was pretty dope also. Parking was alright (street), and check in was nice. Modest amount of seating overall, the chairs were comfortable and there was covered outdoor seating (we were seated inside). Now, the food stuff: Pricing: It's 2025, and we made a reservation, and this is California. Bacon: 4.5/5 - A side order is shareable, I appreciate the amount provided. It was crispy and not too greasy. Avocado Toast: 4.3/5 - No complaints, it was a lot happening on the toast itself, but was overall tasty. French Toast: I say 4/5, Friend leans 4.6/5 - Healthy portion (about 5 slices). It was different, and the choice of sourdough bread is...unique. It wasn't too sweet, which was appreciated. The toast was fine, a lot of berries and whipped cream. - my rating was a bit different, it is great in its own category, comparing it to other French toast is where I am left wanting for something. Maybe less slices and thicker cuts which would showcase the bread and the custard mix. Just a thought. Monte Cristo: 4.6/5 (Friend), 4.2/5 (me) - overall, this was a nice surprise option as it was not on the menu. Definitely a good portion. Ham was tender, bread was tasty. I appreciated it. - So this is where I had a question. The sandwich was good, the addition of mustard was...unique. It felt like it used to bring back the savory-ness of the dish, which worked. My focus was on the berry compote, which was good, it still felt as if something was missing that would complement the sandwich. The addition of the mustard (would could be the amount of mustard added) could've been highlighted by adding something extra to the compote. Like a berry lemon compote, or ramp up the sweetness with a fig jam. Overall, it was a nice visit. I highly recommend checking them out. Oh, and be mindful of the side of potatoes, some were tender, some were not as tender.

Yelp
I visited Casa East Sac for the first time today for brunch with 3 girlfriends and was blown away. First, I loved that we were able to make a reservation as that's frequently not an option for brunch at many Sacramento establishments. We were seated as soon as we arrived and the vibe both inside and outside this locally owned quaint little East sac place is great. The place was busy but didn't feel chaotic and the servers never made us feel rushed and took great care of us. For drinks, we just did coffee (be aware, they only have drip coffee and no milk alternatives but it was solid) and juice. The food was INCREDIBLE. While I'm not usually an avocado toast gal, I decided to do an avocado toast after seeing the server drop one off at another table as it looked so good (I added poached eggs to it just as that table had, which was a great call). The pickled veggies on top and freshness of the cucumber and all the vegetables and yummy bread, it was so so good and undoubtedly the best avocado toast I've ever had. We also got a French toast to split which also was great. Two of my girlfriends got the egg breakfast and my other girlfriend got the breakfast pizza (it was a steak pizza and she added eggs to it). Everything we ate was incredibly fresh and made with high quality ingredients (from delicious fresh baked bread for the side of toast to the strawberries on the French toast which were so so good). I was very impressed and will definitely be back!

Yelp
Best lavender lemon drop ever. Stoped by for drinks and appetizers. And everything was outstanding. Staff is always friendly and the ambience is always welcoming. My last visit we ordered pizza BLT and it was delicious. The lavender lemon drop was so good. I wanted to order more.

Yelp
The breakfast we had was delicious. Service was quick, friendly and accurate. The restaurant is lovely. The grounds and curb appeal are great it fits into its residential location perfectly. Inside is artsy, eclectic, and welcoming. Tables and seating are comfortable and well spaced. Conversation is easy. Excellent and varied menu with fresh ingredients well handled. Presentation of the food is appealing. I was charmed by the table linens which struck me as both French country and nautical at once. Do come by and try Casa.

Yelp
Brunch with cinnamon roll...yes please! Their deviled eggs are good, too. Had the loco moco...was decent. Mimosas were also good! They have patio seating for dining al fresco.

Yelp
What to say.... Took my family here for brunch; This place has excellent food and excellent customer service. Very nice and cozy restaurant. I would recommend you to go taste and see for yourself.

Yelp
Our server was so sweet to us! She let us know the specials and ensured we were taken care of. The atmosphere at this restaurant was romantic and lively. The food was food here is delicious! The plating was beautiful as well! The drink I ordered was the seasonal Bellini and it was refreshing. Definitely a good menu for brunch and dinner!

Yelp
We made reservations online and came here for brunch. There is inside seating and patio seating. There were a few tables that were in the sun and the people there requested to move. We ordered several things to share. We had the Vic pizza (mushrooms), prawn cocktail, loco loco, and buffalo mozzarella salad. I enjoyed everything overall. My favorite was the salad, which came with heirloom tomatoes, cucumber, and pesto. It was light and refreshing.

Yelp
Really love the location and ambience of this restaurant. There is plenty of street parking and the inside is cozy and inviting. The reviews are mainly for brunch so I wanted to come by for that exact reason. I do wish they had more of a menu catered more specifically to brunch. Pizza in my eyes is not brunch food but it was quite amazing. They are generous with their mimosas and service was amazing. My eggs Benedict was massive. Rich and hearty. Hoping to be back and have more brunch items to try.

Yelp
My lunch companion suggested this spot, and I'm so glad they did. We arrived a bit after opening, were quickly seated at a lovely table by the windows. The server was pleasant and prompt with our drinks and starter. We shared the grilled artichoke which was del ious. For lunch we shared the Tanya pizza. It was delightful. As we were leaving, the dining room was filled. Nice to see for a mid week lunch. Would love to return to try more of their offerings !

Yelp
Love this as a work-lunch spot-- great food, never too crowded, and easy to talk. I also love the patio when the weather is nice.

Yelp
Casa serves comfortable Italian and American cuisine in a cozy environment in the East Sacramento neighborhood. The open kitchen concept allows you to watch as the chefs are preparing your food and enjoy your meal. On this visit, I opted for a few of their most popular dishes including the casa caesar, Tanya Pizza, Daily pasta, and steak. Each of the dishes were prepared well and tasted great, however my favorite dish was the shortrib parpadelle pasta! The pasta was al dente and the short rib soft and tender. Service was great as the restaurant is very tight and there is usually a server easily available should you need something. Make sure to check out Casa if you're looking for a restaurant with a nice ambience serving good Italian eats!

Yelp
This is a great place in East Sac to come and grab a bite for brunch, everything was good and we weren't disappointed. Drop by and give it a try!

Yelp
I love coming here. The food is excellent. My favorite is the shrimp Louie salad. The shrimp are big and fresh. The six minutes egg is just right. Love this salad. The pizza was ok. The sandwich was pretty good. Everything was fresh and made to order. The staff are very nice. Parking is street parking. This place does get crowded. It probably a good idea to make reservations. To go is an option.

Yelp
After trying all of the popular brunch spots in sac, I can confidently say that Casa East Sac is in the number one spot. I came here for my birthday today and was blown away. Attentive and kind service, cute indoor and outdoor section, elegant but comforting decor. They don't overcomplicate things. You can tell the owners and chefs are just passionate about feeding people good food and making them feel welcomed. The food is seasoned beautifully and the ingredients are of true quality. As a table of 6, we ordered: Brunch pizzas Eggs benny Avo toast Steak and eggs(off-menu) French toast Mimosas/ Berry Bellini Everything was amazing: avo toast was stacked high, delish artisan bread, seasoned and unique veggies, tangy and satisfying. The eggs benny and brunch pizzas had creamy hollandaise, great quality ham or bacon, thick cut and crispy potatoes. The pizza today had a slightly spicy red sauce to it. So good. The French toast was made with that same amazing bread! Tender and moist with a bit of crisp and came with fruit and whipped cream. We were worried about the steak and eggs because it has been meh at other restaurants... but wow... it was like a ribeye(?) and perfectly charred/butter-basted or so it tasted. Blown away. Again, it's just a steak and eggs but they did an excellent job. I'll be there next weekend and will return for dinner. Excited to see how the menu changes through the seasons. I read through the bad reviews also and ANY bad reviews on here are from angry folks that were likely bothered by something else in their lives or were mad about something that had nothing to do with the food, service, and ambience of this place. Parking was a common complaint but it's honestly extremely accessible compared to downtown restaurants or other East sac spots so don't let that deter you! Go now!

Yelp
Went here with a friend. We didn't have a reservation, but were able to get a table on a Saturday morning. We both ordered the eggs benedict, except I subbed the ham for smoked salmon. Both ways were tasty! The portions were plenty for one person. I think next time we'd have to share. I also got the pomegranate spritz, which was delicious. A really nice place to get brunch!

Laurie P.

Yelp
I ordered the tomato salad from the online menu. It stated butter lettuce, chilled prawns, 6 minute egg, avocado and louie dressing - All for $21 dollars. I brought it home, no chilled prawns, no 6 minute egg but just a salad with arugula, tomatoes and strawberries. Most expensive salad I've had recently!

Yelp
Such a darling space for a restaurant. I came across it after doing run to feed the hungry and saw it. Decided to bring my husband for breakfast on Friday after thanksgiving . Found parking on a side street and was seated right away. I had the avocado toast and it was delicious and my husband had the two eggs. The portions are large and splittable. We added a cinnamon role and it was the only disappointment as it wasn't heated up before serving. So it was hard and unpleasant to eat. As part of the service it would be nice if they asked if we'd like it heated. I will definitely come back for lunch or dinner to try out more on the menu.

Yelp
Originally, we arrived at 11 AM on Saturday for brunch, but it is it served on Saturdays. We opted to return several hours later for dinner as there was still one reservation for inside seating availability at 4:30 PM, a tip worth noting for anyone planning a dinner outing or Sunday brunch. Also, there's a two hour limit, which is fine for me, but for people who are really catching up on visiting it might be a problem if the place is busy I'm sure they need to enforce it. The special catch of the day was day-boat scallops served over a carrot cream purée with golden potatoes and asparagus. Instantly drawn to the scallops, I ordered without hesitation, blissfully unaware of the price.($55!) Yet, the dish surpassed all expectations. The fresh scallops cooked to perfection. My husband, a devout chicken enthusiast, opted for the half chicken and was astounded at the flavors. He raved about the accompanying currant sauce, unable to finish his generous portion he will have another meal tomorrow. Despite the business, the service remained top notch, leaving us eager to revisit this culinary neighborhood gem.

Yelp
a sweet, intimate brunch spot with friendly staff. i ordered the eggs benny (sub smoked salmon) and it was pretty tasty. honestly a standard tasting brunch meal that doesn't taste any different from other places. love the plates haha.

Yelp
We love Casa! Every visit is filled with great food and service. Between brunch and dinner, we've tried a lot on the changing menu and all choices have been delicious. I recommend going if you've never been. Casa will not disappoint!

Pat E.

Yelp
This place is a GEM. The ambience is so inviting. Staff is so friendly and everyone makes you feel like family. The pizza is perfect! and no matter what you order on the menu you can feel sure it will not only be delicious but top quality and artfully made and served. I highly recommend that if you haven't given this place a try you should and 10 to 1 it will end up on your go-to list.

Yelp
Went here for dinner last night to finally try this place. I really liked the coastal lemon spritz cocktail I would get that again, my partner liked her sour beer. We tried the deviled eggs, house made pasta (bolognese), and Tanya pizza. We would try other items next time rather than reorder those but the food quality was good we just weren't blown away by those items but we will be back to try other things for sure. The service was great and the ambiance was casual and fun.

Yelp
I made a group reservation for an early dinner & we were seated right away. As the evening progressed it got busy quickly, so reservations are highly recommended. The restaurant was quaint, refreshing, & vibrant. Our server, Gabby, was amazing! She was charismatic & ensured we were fully taken care of. Her presence made the dining experience even better. 10/10 - Seasonal Mushroom Ravioli: this was dynamite! The sauce was the star & coated the ravioli perfectly; the filling was luscious & paired well with the sauce. 10/10 Fresh Catch Salmon: this was cooked to perfection & the herb butter added more great flavor; tasty dish for those that like fish. 9/10 - Deviled Eggs: the picked onions elevates this from a traditional deviled egg; it's a must to add onions to every bite. 9/10 - Seasonal bruschetta: this was bright, packed lots of flavor & different textures; it's a unique version of a bruschetta & the pieces of chicharron were a nice touch. 6/10 - Orecchiette Housemade Pasta with Sausage & Butter Sauce: the pasta was made really well; overall this tasted like something I could make at better version of at home; the sauce didn't coat the pasta enough, so it tasted bland & it wasn't until the dish cooled down a bit that the butter sauce started coating the pasta more. This left me full, but wishing I ordered the ravioli instead.

Yelp
Came here a couple of weeks ago for a light dinner. Was very underwhelmed by just about everything. I ordered a shrimp appetizer which was truly nothing special in any way. Could have come straight from Raley's. The Arugula salad, also, pretty unremarkable, though fresh at least did have quite a bit of fennel, but nothing special. At this point we are at $29, add a glass of (a very precisely measured 5 oz) wine at $14 and you have the makings of a $50 very light dinner including tip. For the quantity and quality of what we were served, I felt all was very overpriced. The ambiance was sitting on H Street with noisy traffic. Maybe its better for brunch?

Yelp
I was supposed to go for my Birthday to this place but got delayed till today. I went with two of my friends. I made reservations too. The place was a little confusing at first. There was a podium at the front entrance so I thought they would seat us. That isn't the case. This was for lunch. I am not sure about dinner. You have to order from the counter and then get a number, then find a table. There are menus at the front counter. Both drink and food. I walked up to the counter and told them we had a reservation and the guy explained how you order and then sit down. We did have a table next to their fireplace that was reserved for us. The inside is kind of small. They do have a covered outside dinning as well that may even be bigger than the inside. They have heaters there. We took our menus to our table and figured out what we wanted. My friends got the BBQ chicken sandwich and the braised beef sandwich. Both had amazing flavor and so yummy. I got the deviled eggs and bruschetta to start with. Then the braised beef too. I was starving so that is why I got a lot. I was too stuffed to finish my sandwich. The deviled eggs had a piece of bacon on top and it was so good. The bruschetta was amazing. The food here was wonderful and I totally recommend it. I will have to bring my wife when I come back. They had a water station and refilling iced tea pot. A nice Christmas tree at the entrance to top it off. The prices are high but I think it's worth the cost. Oh I forgot about their chocolate chip cookie. Homemade with sea salt yummy

Yelp
When you want that neighborhood feel, Casa East Sac! When you want that comfort food like your grandma made, Casa East Sac! When you want to grab a meal with that special someone, Casa East Sac! We decided to hang out near home since there was impending rain, but we both wanted to go out for a really good meal. We decided on Casa East Sac. It was new to both of us, and we were both looking forward to trying something new. They have a pretty cool menu, but tend to run out of things towards the end of brunch time. The biscuits and gravy normally come with a side of eggs, but I opted to for go the eggs with a substitution at an extra cost for bacon. Yum. Yum. Yum. My only negative critique about the biscuits and gravy, is that there should've been more gravy over the biscuits. The gravy didn't quite cover everything and they were parts of the biscuits that were tad dry on the outside. I love the fact that the bacon was not underdone, or overdone , but just right. It's a very filling meal, and the portions are very generous. I wasn't able to get through much of it, and enjoyed my take-home later on. The eggs Benedict were spot on. The eggs were perfectly poached, and had that lovely yolk that dripped over the ham and onto the muffin. Each bite was superb. Reservations are not necessarily required, but this is a very small and quaint neighborhood, spot, and calling ahead would be highly recommended. You definitely need reservations for dinner. Lovely neighborhood spot that we plan on visiting over and over

Yelp
I really enjoyed the deviled eggs and the cookies. The sandwich in the soup were not my thing, but the quality of the ingredients were clear. The staff was friendly and upbeat. The setting was casual and well kept and you can tell they have regulars. I'd recommend this place.

Yelp
Love Casa!! I've been a few times now for dinner but recently went for lunch. While I've enjoyed the pasta specials and pizza for dinner, we opted for more lunch time items. We arrived around 11:30 and there were plenty of tables to choose from. (At dinner you sit and they wait on you, for lunch you order at the counter and then find a place to sit). We ordered the French onion dip, the prawn Louie salad, and the burger to share. The French onion dip came with the most delicious toasted bread and was the perfect appetizer to start with. The prawn Louie came with massive, super fresh prawns and perfectly cooked soft boiled eggs. The dressing was the perfect amount. The burger comes with a side salad or soup...we opted for soup because it was a colder day. The burger was so juicy and cooked perfectly. They really know how to mix flavors because the mix of the bacon jam and special sauce added to the juiciness. They have a pretty good wine and beer selection, with a lot of non alcoholic beverage options as well! No parking lot, but usually you can find a space on the side streets.

Vivian P.

Yelp
TLDR: A very cute place with simple yet good food!! We came here for the first time and ordered the onion dip, mushroom pizza, and caesar salad. The onion dip was okay but the bread that came with it was great! The caesar salad was also good but very dressing heavy. The mushroom pizza was very light and simple but the dough was so soft and chewy. You order before sitting but the service was good! I would recommend this place for a cute lunch with a friend!

Yelp
I have always loved this place but this was the first visit I left disappointed. I know that eggs are pricey out in these streets but it is very disappointing when you pay for an egg breakfast and your eggs are fake eggs. There were several of us at the table who left our eggs on the plate. No imitation eggs with real egg prices for this guy. Just a warning if you go just don't get scrambled eggs. Also pancakes are no longer on the menu ! They truly DID have the best pancakes in town.

Yelp
Comfortable cozy atmosphere. Attentive and kind servers. Talented, creative, and passionate chefs. Casa has a rotating menu that keeps things fresh and exciting and a Sunday brunch. You can taste the hard work and passion they put into the dishes they prepare. Overall great experience.

Yelp
The food... is excellent. The food is made to share amongst 2-3 people, or two very hungry people. The Caesar salad is amazing, and clearly made with fresh ingredients. The pizza was perfectly cooked with great flavor. The pepperoni had just a little bit of spice to it, the sauce was tangy and the base was cooked perfectly. The crust was just to that point where it's crisp, but slightly doughy and soft inside which is exactly what you'd hope for in an Italian style pizza. One of the things I appreciated most about Casa is how quaint it is. Sitting inside, you can watch the head chef and sous chef working and putting out dishes. I love this because you know what you're getting is fresh and tended to. Very small dining room, with nice patio outdoors. I normally would've enjoyed the patio, but the weekend we went there were 95+ temps and that wasn't going to happen. The service is also very nice. Our server was quick to take our orders, very quick getting food out and friendly.
google avatar

Ada N.

Yelp
The food was great as well as the service. The cinnamon roll was amazing. It was not doughy like some cinnamon rolls can be. It was light and fluffy. We sat out in the outdoor patio on a beautiful fall morning.

Erin S.

Yelp
Good food, nice patio. Cesar salad was delicious along with bruschetta. Good cocktails. Friendly servers.

Yelp
We've had lunch here many times and it's always amazing. Today we met Chef Ted and Jasmine, our waitress. Everything we shared was spectacular!! The service was outstanding as well.

Yelp
Enjoyed casa east sac for a mid week dinner and was blown away by this little gem. They've been in operation for about two years and I can't believe I've been sleeping on this local favorite. We enjoyed the bruschetta, and artichokes for appetizers and bucatini and steak for our mains and they did not disappoint. I enjoyed a soju lemon drop and it was perfectly sweet and sour and exactly what I was looking for. Well portioned, flavorful and well presented. 5/5 in the food category. Our server Sam was exceptional and went over the top to make sure our first experience was unforgettable. The table touches were frequent but not overdone and made time to small talk with us about how our week's been, where we've lived and what brought us in. 5/5 in the service category. The locale and restaurant itself is adorable. Quaint and intentionally designed so as to maximize the space while keeping it comfortable. We sat outside on the patio and again, the space felt safe and comfortable and everything I was hoping for on a Wednesday evening. I can't wait to come back and enjoy their pizzas for a late lunch/early dinner. Until next time!

Jarrod B.

Yelp
Food and service were excellent. And it is quiet and relaxing. Could be the best brunch in sac.

Flix N.

Yelp
Quality food, good service. Noise level inside was way too high to carry on a conversation (outside seating is available). $18 for deviled eggs was definitely a turn off. May come back to try the pizza.

Peter P.

Yelp
Blind review without going, but just looking at the food I get "EAT" sign with exposed lightbulbs spelling it out and glossy black backless stool vibes. IKNYK. Can't even bring myself to try it.
