The 16 Best Restaurants Near Union Square - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"If you need something more substantive than a bucket of popcorn at the AMC Metreon, Joyride Pizza is here for you. The Detroit-style pies coming out of this counter-service spot, located across the theater in Yerba Buena Gardens, are hefty bricks—but you won’t feel weighed down after eating one. The crust is crisp and airy, and topping combinations, like the Eat Your Veggies loaded with fresh vegetables, are light. Sharing one at an outdoor table overlooking the gardens is always a nice way to hit your daily fresh air quota, especially if there's no fog in sight." - julia chen 1, lani conway, ricky rodriguez

The Best Gluten-Free Pizza Restaurants in San Francisco | Eater SF

"The Jacobs brothers continue their spree, catapulting from Samovar tea shops to Sonoma County- and Detroit-inspired pizza parlors. They’ve got the allergen-sensitive front covered, too. Gluten-free here might be the best option for cost alone. It’s just $1 more for the chewy crust — no thin-style here — and there are a ton of vegan and vegetarian options for those in need." - Paolo Bicchieri

The Best Restaurants in San Francisco’s Cow Hollow | Eater SF

"The Jacobs brothers’ pandemic-era pizza has gone gangbusters. They’ve got outposts and delivery detonating all through San Francisco. The Smokin’ Hot Mother Clucker is a smart choice, powerful barbecue energy. The Cow Hollow location has a simple, cute feel, ideal for a glass of wine after that WFH grind. Gluten-free and vegan pies here for those in need, too." - Paolo Bicchieri

Ordered through doordash the muther clucker, it was more like a "Mother Peperocini." This thing was jam packed with peperocinis i had to take some off. Most of the slices had 1 piece of chicken per slice with barely any bbq sauce. It was a dry pizza. Keep away from the "Mother Clucker." They also dont allow "special requests" like asking them directly for condiments on some pizzas, if your driver forgot them forget about it. I tried the Yolo Pepperoni last week and it was damn good. I suggest keep it classic for best results. Keep away from their specialty pizzas, they are built low quality.

Joyride Pizza is located right next to the Ferry Building on Embarcadero, which is a great location. We decided to try it after exploring the Ferry Building, thinking we could get a better and more affordable pizza there. We ordered the Eat Your Veggies and Buffalo Chicken pizzas in a large size, which is meant for two people. When we placed our order, the person taking it asked if we wanted cheese and marinara sauce on top of the Eat Your Veggies pizza. We said yes to the cheese, but to our surprise, the pizza turned out to be more like a bread bowl with a lot of veggies on top and no sauce at the bottom. It felt more like a salad than a traditional pizza. On the other hand, the Buffalo Chicken pizza had a lot of bread and cheese but very little chicken. We found the pizzas to be quite expensive, costing around $30 each. We're not sure if this is how Detroit Style Pizza is supposed to be, but we didn't enjoy this style and we won't be ordering from there again. We left feeling only half full instead of ordering more pizza because we were getting frustrated. If you don't have any other options for food on Embarcadero, you can try it, but we wouldn't recommend it.

Google
I tried the tater tots w/ gremolata because they're vegan, but sadly they weren't very good. They didn't have any crunch, like they had been sitting in a steamer, and were lacking salt. I went back to ask for salt and the lady picked salt by little pinches with her fingers to put in a little metal container for me. I know that salt has antisceptic properties but that's still not very sanitary. Why not just pour it in? Or use a spoon? I'd like to order a vegan pizza next time but would first want to know if they make sure to not cross-contaminate with the meat and dairy. Let me know!

Google
Pretty tasty flavorful pizza. Took quite a while to get the one piece. Just wanted to try it out. Actually walking to go to dinner and had to try a piece! I think after some more time, service may get a little better and a little more welcoming or friendly. I would try another flavored piece of pizza here. This is definitely a great location for pizza. I like being able to walk in and grab it and keep on walking down Embarcadero with it.

Distinctive Detroit-Style Pizza at Joy Ride Pizza Joyride Pizza, a Detroit-style pizza restaurant in San Francisco, is expanding quickly. Over the last few years, they have opened several new locations. According to their website, they now have seven locations in San Francisco. I tried their pizza for the first time today and found it unique and tasty. I had been walking by their Pier 1 Embarcadero location for a couple of months but never had a chance to walk in and try their food. I tried their thin-crust Greek and cheese pizzas. This location is great! It is right there by the water and next to the Ferry Building. It is cozy and convenient for those who work within walking distance from the Financial District. The young people who work there are very nice and accommodating. I was planning to take my pizza to go, but after ordering the food, I changed my mind and decided to have it sitting by the counter. While my food was getting ready, I started reading about how the founders succeeded in growing the business fast despite the challenges of the pandemic. The Jacobs brothers specialize in Detroit-style pizza, known for its rectangular shape, thick crust, and caramelized edges. They have operated Samovar Tea Lounges since 2002 and had to change their business model when the pandemic severely impacted their tea business. Inspired by a friend opening a pizza shop, they converted their Valencia Street tea lounge into the first Joyride Pizza location in 2021. With Alastair Hannmann, formerly of Tony's Pizza, they began selling Detroit-style pizza. Their pizzas are visually appealing, with toppings like ricotta, arugula, and pesto. If I had to make one criticism, it would be that they are slightly too salty. Other than that, they are delicious.

Google
got the veggie something pizza from here and made it vegan! actually pretty good but wish it had sauce instead of just cheese on it :( kind of bland so would maybe get something else from here. also got the cider here (which was not good 2/10 would not recommend)

Google
Very good Detroit-style pies. We did takeout through online ordering. Most of our order was conventional ingredients, but for one, it was nice to find dairy-free cheese that tasted like cheese and gluten-free crust that was great.

Google
Pizza was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! There was a pizza online that was not on the local menu and staff was HAPPY to accommodate and make the pizza for us! Great customer service!

Yelp
My friends and I walked here from Pier 39. We definitely worked up an appetite, considering we literally ate like 2 hours prior. I ordered a "personal" sausage and shrooms ($14) which has 2 slices of Detroit style pizza. Honestly so worth it. They make everything here fresh and crispy cheesey edge piece is to die for! The soft, spongey focaccia bread and meaty marinara sauce was a satisfying meal. I was raving it to my friends that we had to stop by here and I'm so glad they went along with it. Service was polite. There was a bit of a wait tho. Lots of indoor and seating. All in all, I would definitely come back!

Yelp
My conversation: me: can a get a slice of A and B? Him: 30$. Me: Oh, just a slice of A. Him: We don't have a slice of A. Just a personal. Me: ...? But you just said... How do I know which ones you have slices for? Him: .... Me: ok, personal of A

Yelp
We generally end up staying at the Ferry Building for lunch, but we saw Joyride down the street and thought, why not? (Of course, after checking Yelp). I got the #8 "Satisfying Sausage and 'Shrooms" which had sausage, black olives and mushrooms. The pizzas come in three different sizes - slice, personal and large. I wanted a slice, but #8 doesn't come in individual slices, so I got the personal (which is the equivalent to two slices). The pizza was delicious with crispy, crunchy edges and the dough seemed relatively light for the typically dense Detroit pizza. We also ordered a Caesar salad which paled in comparison to the pizza. It's a great spot to dine out with friends since everybody can get what they want. Indoor seating is relatively limited, and the tables are fixed in place. I believe there is only one four-person table, 4-5 two-person tables and bar seating, so it's not a great spot for a large group. There are many tables outdoors which I think are for general use (not just for Joyride) and there are many four-person tables, but it can get windy (and you might risk having your food snatched by a seagull).

Yelp
The holidays are here and the City is alive with December spirit! Over the weekend we went to the Ferry building on Saturday for the Farmer's Market and took note of a few new vendor/restaurant openings within and surrounding the building..one of those being Joyride Pizza! Wanting to introduce Detroit Style pizza to my family and grab a snack before heading to Union Square, we ordered a few slices and a few beers on-tap: cheese (topped with a strip of house made Marina), the Sweet Bianca (essentially a cheese slice topped with a dollop of ricotta and fig jam), and the Satisfying Sausage & Shrooms (this one you have to order as 2-slices). Looks like outside of their menu you can also build-your-own and they do offer gluten-free, dairy-free, plant-based options as well. Slices are a bit more pricey than I'm used to, but I figured crossing the bridge would mean opening the wallet a bit more for afternoon yummies and quality toppings. I've had Joyride before at Gilman Brewing in Berkeley, but haven't been to their own brick-and-mortar until this moment. Love how the windows are panned with beautiful slices almost like a candy store for outside traffic, just a fresh pizza version for City travelers :) Great staff, fun ambience, I think I'm just more of a traditional, NY slice kinda gal. Slices were light and airy, family loved trying something new and being East Coasters themselves, now have something to write home about. All in all I would stop by again and maybe try a few other fun toppings from the menu. *While waiting for the slices, we read a "Pizza Knowledge" sign that mentioned how Detroit Style Pizza was originally made. Zoom in on photo for all the deets*

Yelp
Detroit style pizza. They sell slices and pies all square. They have some interesting combinations but I went for the pepperoni. It was a pretty good pizza and the service was casual and good.

Yelp
Wow! The slices look mouth watering from the window. I saw they have a spot here and another in the Mission. Detroit style pizza and some interesting options! The prices are not cheap, plus you have to get two slices essentially for some flavors. The staff was super helpful, especially when I struggled with the order kiosk. Thanks! Soooo good, the slices were delicious and exceeded expectations. Other than my pepperoni slices being a little on the cold side, I was pleased. Sweet Bianca was magical. Sweet heat pineapple was pretty darn good! Expensive, but delicious.

Yelp
I'm no stranger to Joyride, having frequented 3 of their other locations. I was initially all about the simple cheese or pepperoni, but I've started exploring their more creative options. At this location, I've been dabbling into several flavors only available as whole pies. Garlic Knots: Loved that they gave such a huge container of sauce. I was able to pick apart each knot and load it up with that delicious tomato goodness. The knots themselves felt fluffier than regular garlic knots, probably because the dough here is fluffier than regular pizza. I liked the browned garlic used instead of raw garlic, for a deeper flavor without the raw tang. Nice thin layer of melted parmesan on top. Supreme: I guess there is a thing as too much meat! All of it is tasty in its own right, but it's so overloaded you end up tasting more meat than pizza. Plus it feels very sodium heavy, since I was super thirsty an hour or so later, which doesn't happen with their other flavors. Smokin' Hot Mother Clucker BBQ: Probably my favorite of the whole pizza only flavors. Loved the tang of the BBQ sauce with the hot peppers and the red onions. Not a configuration I would have figured out together myself, so I'm thankful for their creativity. Greek: Despite all the toppings, tasted a bit mild. I liked the dorati tomatoes, since they were somewhere between fresh and sundried. But I kinda wonder if actual tomato sauce would have been good too. The artichoke hearts added a nice pickled taste, though some were a bit too fibrous. Olives were a good contrast to the feta. Ocean Beach: Maybe it's my Connecticut roots, but I like clam on pizza. So this was probably my second favorite of the whole pizza flavors. Lots of clam pieces and the dorati tomatoes added just enough tomato flavor. The capers were interesting, not something I normally see on clam pizza, but added a briny contrast. Only thing missing is maybe more garlic? Green Goddess: Mild tasting and herbal. I do like the mix of ricotta mounds with the pesto drizzle and the little pickled peppers. The arugula is kinda meh though. I feel like if I'm gonna go for a veggie pizza, this is about as far as I want to go. Sweet Pineapple Heat: Not a fan, despite the hype. There was too much pineapple making it too sweet, without the reliable salty ham to offset that. Also, it wasn't all that hot and the semi-cooked jalapeños didn't quiet work texture wise. Soft Serve with Chocolate Chip Blondie Crumble: The crumble is a bit oversold. It's more like tiny crumbs and there's not much except for a random walnut piece here and there. The vanilla soft serve is pretty basic. Guess it's better to stick with their specialty here, pizza.

Yelp
Thank the pizza Gods for pleasant surprises! One of my favorite Detroit-style pizza spots in SF recently opened up their latest location at Pier 1 near the Ferry Plaza. This may be the 7th or 8th location. Taking the place of the old Starbucks that was across from Gott's in the Ferry Building, Joyride brings much needed pizza joy to the Embarcadero in a convenient and tasty way. Detroit style pizza is a must-try; the foundation of its flavor is the crust, which boasts a beguiling combination of textures. For instance, it's thick and airy on the inside, yet strikingly crispy on the outside, the crust is a canvas of contradictions that play together beautifully. This tantalizing juxtaposition is achieved by baking the dough in a seasoned, rectangular steel pan, often borrowed from the auto industry, which imparts a singular, caramelized edge to the pizza. On this remarkable, pillowy, base is layered a generous amount of cheese, often a blend of Wisconsin brick cheese that extends to the edges, creating an irresistible halo of crispy, cheesy goodness. As the cheese melts and bubbles, it cascades over the sides, forming a crunchy, golden-brown perimeter that is a hallmark of Detroit-style pizza. Now, this style is very caloric and it's very difficult to eat a whole Detroit style pizza alone (I've tried). But, it's amazing and Joyride does some of the best in SF. This location is so convenient to everything (BART, Ferry Plaza, Market st) and has convenient ordering at a kiosk. You place your order, take a pager, and eagerly await your pie. They have filtered water and bathrooms. Seating is a bit limited and I suspect that once people realize this is here, it might be more crowded!

Yelp
Detroit Style Pizza made with organic yecora rojo flour and creative local toppings. The on-trend pizza in SF these days is the Detroit Style pizza that owes its rectangular shape to the oil pans used in the automotive industry. A decendent of the Sicilian pizza the focaccia crust is crispy around the edge and airy inside which makes for a crust with a lot of heft. Joyride takes advantage of this with a creative menu of generous weighty toppings. My favorite is "Eat Your Veggies". Brussels sprouts, crimini mushrooms, black olives, dorati tomatoes, red onion, mozzarella & brick cheese, topped with fresh basil layered on a nicely cheese crusted focaccia style bread. I also like the "Garden Goddess" topped with a good portion of arugula, ricotta, sweetie drops, pesto, black olives, red onion, cracked black pepper, mozzarella & brick cheese. You can add or swap a number plant based "meats" or vegan cheese, if you are a veggie eater. On a sunny day you can hangout with your squares on picnic tables located on deck outside. Imagine peering out on the water, experiencing a San Francisco version of "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay" - and watching the tide roll away!

Yelp
Pizza was very good almost 10$ for a small slice thats not that warm lots of different options BUT they have alot of pizza on display we asked what they do with them at the end of the day and they throw them out. I find it to be VERY wasteful and the least they could do is box em up and leave em for the homeless to eat! Not cool

Yelp
I stumbled across this place after the 2024 Pinkarhon. Such kind people! They invited the runners to come in for a little discount after our run. I am not so much a picky eater as someone with allergies and sensitivities. I had the Great Ecstasy Pesto! C'est magnifique! The decor was fabulous but simple. Not touristy but kind of early 00s Marina. I definitely would return. I was so stoked to login and see they have more than one location.
google avatar

Tash C.

Yelp
This place was delicious, I loooove their pizza sauce. I believe they also use focaccia bread for the pizza. And instead of putting the sauce under the cheese they put it on top (on some of the pizzas). Sounds different but it's super delicious. They make square pizzas so the edge/corner pieces have burnt cheese which was amazing. The garlic knots were also a hit, and they come with the amazing marinara sauce. The staff was also really nice and helpful. I'm not sure if this is family run, but Josh, the guy at the register, and all the staff I came into contact with were very nice and helpful. They have some tables outside, it was super peaceful sitting outside looking at the Bay Bridge and the water and enjoying pizza and drinks. Will definitely return here!

Yelp
we ordered: - large supreme food: made to order! amazing crispy crust and lots of toppings- the pepperoni especially was crunchy and well flavored. i personally don't love this style since it's a very thick slice with an uneven sauce coating though. there's also andytown espresso and some interesting desserts but we didn't try those this time around. service: we came on new years' eve, so it was very packed. workers were still very kind and patient! order also came out relatively fast- maybe twenty minutes? on a normal day, the service is probably even better. ambiance: small corner restaurant near pier 1. there's decent seating and a bar counter indoors as well as some tables outside. very moody and wooden decor for the interior! water cups are outside near a self serve fountain. notes: online ordering hours and prices differ slightly from the in store ones. i think there's also two different menus? this might just be due to the many locations (as in this one has some items others don't)!

Yelp
I've heard of Joyride Pizza before, so when I learned of a location near the Ferry Building, I knew where I was going to stop for lunch. Ordered the YOLO 'Roni Pepperoni (regular crust) and the Buffalo Chicken (thin crust). My first impression was that the pizza's are kind of small for the price ($25 for the pepperoni, $27 for the buffalo chicken), but it's right by the Ferry Building, so things are obviously going to be expensive. We sat inside, but they also have some tables outside that give you a nice view of the Bay. Great spot on a sunny day. The pepperoni was spicy and wasn't overly oily, the marinara was well-seasoned, and the crust was cheesy and crispy. However, something that surprised me was that the undercarriage was really soft. This doesn't mean the pizza was bad: it was just different than other Detroit-style pizzas I've had. I really liked the Buffalo Chicken; Buffalo sauce, chicken, and blue cheese makes for a legendary combination on a pizza. You get the heat from the Buffalo, the strong funky and creamy flavors from the cheese, and the chicken makes it filling. I would 100% order this again. Despite their small sizes, these pizzas were filling. I was able to easily split them between myself, my brother, and my friend. If I make my way back here anytime soon, I'll definitely have to try one of their salads. Their Greek salad and Caesar salad both looked good.

Nathan P.

Yelp
Please do me a favor. I would like for a manager to give me a call. I will not leave a bad review, however, just want to chat with a manager/owner. Thanks,

Yelp
Having had a few other Detroit-style pizzas I had high expectations, especially with the enticing combos on the menu. It was good, but not great. The personal two-slice "Meatza" was fine, but seemed a bit flat on flavor. Same with the slice of "Bacon Me Crazy" as it was hard to find the bacon and the slice did not seem to have actually been re-heated, just room temperature. Service was pleasant and the dining area was clean.

Ricardo V.

Yelp
Comida ok, pizza ok. Achei uma boa pizza, feita com cuidado e com bons ingredientes, mas nada excepcional.
google avatar

Nicole G.

Yelp
Delicious pizza, quick service! We had the pepperoni, the "eat your veggies" and the "sweet hot pineapple". The pizza had crispy crust and fluffy dough... and don't forget to get the extra dollop of sauce on top of your pizza! Yum! We will definitely visit this place again the next time we're in the area.
google avatar

Mark G.

Yelp
I was extremely excited to try this new location, but it was unfortunately not good. Pizza was served at barely room temperature and the slice was tiny for the price. I wanted to try the garlic knots which looked delicious, but the only option is to buy a dozen of them for $16 which I'm not doing for lunch. I also would have loved a side salad, but same deal, $16 and no small option.

Yelp
Service is excellent. Staff are friendly and courteous. Pizzas and beers are excellent.

Yelp
Quick update - management reached out with an explaination and offer to try Joyride again after some changes had been made. Will be updating my review when I do, adding a star now as they are clearly responsive to customer concerns.

Yelp
Excellent meal! Fast and great food. We had an arugula salad, green goddess pizza, and pepperoni pizza. All great. Restaurant is busy but cozy.

Yelp
Outstanding pizza at a cool location! My only beef is they nailed the chairs to the floor. So, it's difficult to get a large group together.

Yelp
Hella good. It's like if pizza married a croissant and had children The guy at the register was super nice and the selection of food and drinks is impressive indeed. Great inside and outside seating too!

Rick M.

Yelp
Got the personal sized Greek pizza and a glass of wine - both excellent. They make each pizza fresh and the crust is crispy. It's just north of the ferry building and worth stopping by.

Yelp
Having been to almost all of the amazing Joyride locations in SF, (and also featured in some good bars in Berkeley, Daly City, and a couple others), I'm happy to say...I'll be back as a "regular." The Embarcadero location started with kiosks to order, but recently changed to the more "JoyFull" Personal service, so you actually interact with a real (and very nice) person. I've tried many of the pizza offerings and found them all to be exactly what I was looking for at the time...Meaty, or Sweet/Spicy, or loaded with Veggies...plus, you will see it's all what I'd call an "artistic style" pizza just for color, flavor, texture, design...and super filling. I've seen some reviews calling it a small pizza but for me and others with good appetites, there's agreement that they are very filling and satisfying. While you're there, order one of their tasty beverages or cocktails, and remember to try the salads (yummy and a meal in itself) and top it off with a dessert --even if you have to bring it home to eat later or share with a friend. While you are there, check out the authentic vintage Joyride Vehicle, the iconic source for the company name :-) EnJoy the Ride! sorry no photo today...but you can see a lot of pics here on Yelp and also their instagram page.

Yelp
Pros: Employees are super nice and hard-working. 5 stars for them. Con: The pizza. None of us liked it. We had never tried Detroit-style pizza before. The dough was too thick for us and the marinara (served on top instead of on the crust) tasted metallic.

Yelp
Unbelievably GREAT PIZZA!! They have the MOST FANTASTIC All Cheese Gourmet Pizza that my Family asks for every Pizza Day. I also love their Combination, Hot Wings and Cheesy Bread. Everything I have tried has been so delicious,

Raymond J.

Yelp
Detroit style. Vegan and veggie options as well. Small place, so order at the kiosk and take it to go.

Alex E.

Yelp
The joyride is for the owners who after the obligatory service charge are making you pay $40 for a medium to small size pizza. It is a decent pie though with some yummy buttery crust.
