Best Restaurants and Bars Near the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival - Eater Seattle

"Known for its decadent brunch items, this homey mom ‘n’ pop joint serves breakfast until 2 p.m. A quaint stop in downtown Sedro Woolley, Joy’s takes pride in its hearty food, friendly service and low-key atmosphere. The crunchy coconut pancakes and monstrous cinnamon rolls are both popular picks amongst newbies and regulars. Open for takeout and limited dine-in." - Matthew Lombardi, Maggy Lehmicke

Cute country cafe atmosphere, very nice staff, amazing food and the cinnamon buns! OMG!

One of the best breakfasts I have had in a long time! The chicken fried steak was so flavorful and crunchy, and the home made sourdough bread was a delightful dream. And don't even get me started on the cinnamon roll, I nearly fainted it was so good. It has been 2 hours since we finished our breakfast, and we are still talking about it and probably will be all day.

Google
Definitely was surprised with how good everything was. More often than not, diners in small towns end up being lackluster, not Joy’s. From the homemade jam, to the crunchy coconut pancakes, to the burrito. All delicious, well priced, and huge portion sizes.

Google
Food selection is okay at best because of limited meal options. Also lacking any substitutions to be made makes for an unnecessary cost. The server did not serve us once food was in front of us. The good parts were quick seating, and the fast delivery for food. Bathrooms are clean and well supplied.

Google
What a wonderful quaint place this is!! Feels like I've gone back 50 years and in a good way. The town was quaint with the old fashioned downtown, parking right in front. The restaurant was decorated nicely and very homey feel. The pastries in the display case were HUGE. We stopped here on our way to North Cascades National Park for breakfast. We had the classic American breakfasts - an order of oatmeal, and order of eggs, sausage, hash browns and toast. They were all very delicious and exactly as you'd expect a traditional American breakfast. There is nothing fancy or pretentious about this place or these dishes. They stuck to the old American tradition.

Breakfast is the bomb here! The cooks do a great job in cooking and serving delicious food in just the right amount of time. Service is top notch here. Olivia our waitress was the best. Made us feel at home every time we came in. The omelettes are huge and delicious. The coconut pancakes are like nothing I have had before. My husband is officially addicted to them. The espresso is also on point. They have fresh baked bread they make right in house too. The Reuben sandwich was one of the best I have had with perfectly cooked fries. The prices are reasonable for the portions you receive. The staff is very attentive and friendly. The restaurant and bathrooms are very clean. We are here visiting from out of town and wish we could have a place this good where we are from. But then again we would gain a ton of weight if this place was a regular of ours. LOL 😆 Definitely recommended!

Google
This is the sort of place that's increasingly hard to find. Great food, very fair prices, genuinely friendly, attentive staff, and fast service. The cinnamon rolls are huge and out of this world. If this place were 40 miles south of Sedro, it'd cost twice as much and be impossible to get into. But we waited 10 minutes on a sunny Saturday morning in spring, and had a huge breakfast for two for under $25 bucks. Highly recommended.

Google
The food and service were awsome, the hand made chick fried steak and sausage gravy were scrumptious and I tried a bite of my wife's coconut pancake and wow!!! Was that tasty! We will definitely be back.

Yelp
Was in the area and looking for a place for breakfast and saw Joy's. We are so glad that we stopped. Great food , and big proportion's. Server was very nice.

Yelp
This place is the best breakfast place I've been to in over 6 months! The food portions were large and delicious, the servers were friendly, and the wait was quick. I can't wait to come back here in the future - if you are in Sedro definitely come here for breakfast!!

Kimberly ..

Yelp
I live in the city so don't travel this far north often. But I stop here every year after the tulip festival. I can't not get that cinnamon roll. It's my cheat-day guilty pleasure for sure.

Yelp
Outside of great service and amazing sourdough toast, this was a mediocre experience. After hearing about Joy's from a friend's wife, I was excited to give it a try. She claimed that Joy's is better than Stilly Diner in Arlington. It's not--not even close. At Joy's, the iced tea was watered down, the gravy was bland and gloopy, the hash browns were soggy and unseasoned, and the biscuit was served cold, and to add insult to injury, was stale and flavorless. If you want really good toast served with a friendly smile, Joy's is where it's at.

Yelp
Amazing food, great customer service. Nice atmosphere, makes you think of an old diner. Really nice all around! We've gone twice & I'm sure we'll be back again!

Yelp
The food here is POOR you want some SOGGY BLAND FOOD come here. I don't understand how there's a line to eat here. The ambience is fine but you're there to eat and what a disappointment. Left my plate how the picture looks waste of money.
google avatar

Yelp
The food is always excellent! The best breakfast in Sedro Woolley! I have had a great experience every time I've eaten there.

Yelp
We found our new favorite breakfast/brunch and its name says it all!! Joy's Bakery really does bring our family a lot of joy. Back story-- we actually was planning on going to another Brunch/Breakfast place in Burlington but when we got there, it was super crowded with a 20 minute wait getting a table and we were told once we ate seated the kitchen had an additional 40 more minutes before we could eat. We thought over an hour wait was a bit too long to wait so we went to Joy's in Sedro-Woolley. My husband had been there before and had a good experience and suggest we go there instead of waiting for an hour. Personally I was not feeling comfortable stay at the location as popular as it may seem. There's no way that place is within their 50% capacity. I don't want them to get shut down so I won't mention the name. Anyway..back to Joy. Quick drive and found parking right in front. We got there around 11amish and while we were told there was a waiting list when we called to inquire, we were seated right away when we arrived. First impression it was really spacious and obviously they must had a recent remodel since every thing looks "new and updated." Even the bathroom look like I could even dine there--not that I would (haha). You know that Joy made an good first impression if I am yelping about the bathroom. Food: Back to the why we actually went there. Hubby order a dish I can't remember... a plate that had an eggs scramble, hashbrowns, sourdough toast with strawberries jam(which he could not stop raving about while he was eating it.) I order the special of the day, eggs Benedict. Tip #1: read yelp before you order, because the portion there is massive!! I mean I had to take half my eggs Benedict home. Order my kids 1 pancake (again massive) and the other had a Belgium waffle with powder sugar. Out total was after tax-- under $50!!! And get this-- that under $50 total included a to go order of their massive cinnamon bun, a chocolate cupcake, and a huge chocolate chip cookie. What a freakin' awesome restaurant!! You can not find a eatery to feed a family of four for under $50 anywhere, much less bring home dessert items and 3 boxes of leftovers. That alone won my value for food heart. Service: Okay maybe we lucked out on the food but could we be so lucky twice?? Our waitress Melissa was AWESOME!!! So attentive and friendly. It was like she had known us and we were just chatting like old friends. We bonded quickly since we were both mamas with young kids. My husband and her chatted about the local activities around Sedro-Woolley. Melissa was definitely why I gave this review 5 stars...her personality and friendly approach push my review to that rare 5 stars that I tend to be stingy to give out. Definitely will be coming back! Going to try their lunch menu to check if it could get any better than brunch. Stay tune.

Yelp
My absolute favorite breakfast establishment!! Sorry Birch Door, but this place rocks! I'd you're looking for super high quality breakfast/brunch/lunch, and you're even remotely close to Woolley, I HIGHLY recommend this restaurant. Clean, well lit, friendly staff, great menu!!!

K L.

Yelp
5 stars for the pastries alone! Can't wait to return and try more on the menu. The service was exceptionally friendly and attentive. The cafe was bright and inviting on a blustery morning. We tried the amazing cinnamon roll that I'd heard about from a friend and it lived up to the size and the hype. We also got a divine almond cream danish, a heavenly caramel apple danish, and a raspberry treat. Poof!!! Only crumbs were left with happy smiling faces.

Adrian S.

Yelp
Great food. Pleasant and attentive servers. Friendly atmosphere. Humongous cinnamon rolls! Highly recommend this place. A rare find these days of cooky cutter restaurants.

Yelp
THE BEST! Food is always delicious and fresh, service is great and it's always clean. I always make it a point to stop in when I'm in town, there's no place better.
google avatar

Melinda H.

Yelp
I recently purchased the infamous cinnamon roll, and I'm sad to say it was horribly stale. Joys Bakery should only sell fresh pastries at full price.
google avatar

Denise B.

Yelp
Great place for breakfast! Their bread is homemade and so is there jelly! Strawberry and blackberry. Delicious both of them. I was very pleased they had no issue with making me fish for breakfast.( I can't eat any meat except fish. So when they said ," No problem!" I was very happy! My husband had 2 pouched eggs on toast. Delicious! Everything we saw people order looked wonderful! We will be back!

Cindy W.

Yelp
Fantastic service, delicious food. My only complaint is...too much food! The crispy coconut pancake was the size of the plate and I hated not being able to eat all of it! Highly recommend

Yelp
My family stumbled upon this little jewel....Always Delicious its a must try here in Sedrowoolley homecook breakfast. Great service too.

Yelp
The best breakfast place ever! fast amazing service! Food is fantastic must try the cinnamon rolls and the coconut pancake!

Carol B.

Yelp
Great Service , full of happy customers , crispy coconut pancakes are amazing !! Cute small town vibe
google avatar

Archana R.

Yelp
Fairly usual breakfast place. Nothing fancy. The homemade bread served as toast was the best! Thick slices, toasted well. Quick service and seating. Huge portion sizes! Street parking available. This seems to be very popular among the local residents. The staff were wearing masks, can't say the same about some of the diners.
google avatar

Sandi P.

Yelp
Took my out of state brother here first breakfast, was fairly busy, but we were seated quickly, served quickly and with a smile. The food was amazing, as is the norm. Our go to location for taking visitors to breakfast.
google avatar

Yelp
Wear your STRETCHY BRITCHES!! Hubby asked what I wanted to do for my birthday. I said I wanted to go to Joy's for coconut pancakes. Mind you, it's an hour drive for us!!! So worth it! I ordered the "pancake sandwich", upgraded to coconut pancakes. Not a sandwich at all. Just two delicious coconut pancakes topped with two scrambled eggs and 2 strips of bacon. The eggs are nice and dry and the bacon crispy. Ohhhhhh, the pancakes!!! Moist, not soggy, on the inside, with a crunchy coconut side. Sweet, but not overly so! No syrup needed!!! Hubby had the French toast sandwich. Same drill. Not a sandwich, just a combo. The French toast is made with their freshly baked cinnamon swirl bread. Service was super friendly! Coffee always full, too. Only downside is they have Pepsi instead of Coke. So, we had coffee!!

Yelp
Popped in 30 minutes before closing on a Sunday with a group of 7 Girl Scouts after a morning of hiking. Blown away with the fantastic service and gracious servers! Super fast service and plenty of smiles! We made sure to head out before closing time, these guys are fantastic and deserve to leave on time ;) Thanks for the fries and Italian sodas ladies!

Yelp
We went to Joy's on a whim for breakfast while in town visiting family. Parking was easy to find on the street nearby. We patiently waited about a half hour for a table on a busy Saturday morning. The staff was friendly and polite. I ordered the chicken fried steak and my wife had an omelette. Both came with hash browns and their homemade bread and jam. The chicken fried steak was decent but nothing great. The omelette was considerably better. The highlight was the homemade bread and jam. Overall a pretty good place for breakfast and we'll give them another go next time we're in the area.

Yelp
My wife and I stopped in here for some breakfast while road tripping. Free street parking can be found. Discover is an accepted form of payment. It was quite apparent that the patrons are regulars here. My wife and I gained several stares from patrons upon our entrance. After a few moments, we were no longer novelties. This cafe is outdated in decor but fits nicely with the clientele. Clientele were hard working class with hungry big appetites. Perfect cafe to fit such a bill. Homemade baked goods are on display and also for purchase. My wife and I shared One Biscuit & Gravy for $4.75. The biscuit was ginormous, fluffy and warm. The gravy was more of a chicken gravy rather than a sausage gravy. We both enjoyed our breakfast choice. We also shared a side of Sausage Links (qty 4) for $3.75. The links were cooked just right. Our waitress was welcoming and honest with her opinions when I asked for them. Thank you Joy for filling our bellies and keeping all the hard working class folks fed and full.

Yelp
So my fiance and I went to sedro wolley to run an errand and took the bus. We were going to take the bus back to concrete where we live after but the bus didn't show up so we figured we'd stop and eat breakfast. When we showed up the place was crowded. Despite that though we got our food very quickly and the food was amazing. The omelet I ordered the veggie one was probably the best omelet I've ever eaten. And the toast and jam was perfect. The waitress was very nice! The food was a bit pricey but worth it for the generous portions. I would definitely go back! As far as the bus ride back lol we ended up taking a cab since the bus to concrete didn't show up!

Yelp
Fantastic food and service. My family and I have been going to years

Judi M.

Yelp
Always very busy and always very good food. Prime rib breakfast? Yes! This is a bakery and restaurant. Love their cinnamon roll French toast. They serve many traditional breakfast dishes and more. They seem to have a great wait staff and it's nice to consistently see the same people working there. Wish they were open seven days a week.

Delilah C.

Yelp
My partner and I recently moved to the area and this place was highly recommended by a coworker. We were impressed with the mocha and coffee bar they have open for everyone to watch. The food though. Friday's they have clam chowder and oh man. That country style with a few slivers of bacon was delicious. The hubcap is pictured and was a perfect size to split between 3-4 people. Or two if you have a sweet tooth. Portions are big. Obviously took some for leftovers. Don't forget to try their HOMEMADE SOURDOUGH

Yelp
This place truly delivers! I've heard for a while about the delicious coconut pancakes here at Joy's so I knew I had to give them a try. Nestled in the heart of Sedro-Wooley, you could almost walk right past it, but that would be a mistake. Inside, it is homey, warm and inviting- think small town diner with friendly waitstaff and older decor. There is a counter full of baked goods including gigantic cinnamon rolls and other pastries. We sat and were brought water and coffee. It didn't take me long to decide- coconut pancakes! They came topped with butter, whipped cream and syrup and also bacon and eggs (2 each). I handed the bacon to my friends but had the rest. These pancakes are HUGE. Almost unbelievably huge. They are a sweet cake by themselves without syrup or whipped cream, but the toppings push it over the top. One of my friends got the same as me, the other got the breakfast burrito- it was also huge, stuffed with quality ingredients and grilled on the outside just right. It was served with hashbrowns. He said it was really good. As they are open until 2pm on weekdays, they serve breakfast all day but some diners were getting lunch items that looked fantastic. I also saw that they make French toast with their homemade cinnamon swirl bread, giving me another reason to go back...

Eric W.

Yelp
Had the chicken fried steak and strawberry Belgian waffle w/whip and both were delicious. The gravy for the steak was tasty and the waffle was fluffy. The toast with jam yummy too. Coffee was good and got a yummy, huge cinnamon roll to go.
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
My wife and I ate here after visiting some local antique shops I got the coconut pancake and she got the country Benedict We both enjoyed our dishes ! We both would return back here!
google avatar

Yelp
Family Run Business! We had a large last minute lunch run to make for a work event. This restaurant hustled to make it all happen. We ordered numerous sandwiches, salads and bakery items! Everything looked great, tasted great and was ready to go upon my arrival. Without hesitation their "Bakery Salad" is one of the best salads (hearty n delicious) I have ever had in my entire life!! Two of my co-workers also had the same salad and they said the exact same thing. Oh my word... SOOOO good! Our order was "to go" but the restaurant was packed with a more "senior like population" which means these people know how to eat! Great food! Great Service! Will absolutely return!! Thank you!!
google avatar

Lynette L.

Yelp
Great food and wonderful service. Love the small hometown feeling. Highly recommend!!
google avatar

Bass M.

Yelp
The service was really nice and fast but the cafe is small so the tables are always full but the food is definitely worth the wait.

Nataliya S.

Yelp
If you like biscuits and gravy this place is for you. That and the small town feel of it is great. The rest of the food is delicious and the waitstaff make you feel welcome each time we come in. That and the fact that they're a bakery and have a bunch of fresh baked sweets and bread is a huge bonus. Love it. Try it out !

Joanna A.

Yelp
This place is off the hook! Was tired of the same old breakfast places in our area (except Cama Beach), off and on the island. Ambience, no! Not needed! We took a drive to Sedro Woolley and to our pallets surprise, ate a Joy's. Personally, do you not like coconut in any form. My husband said, "you must try this pancake, it was delicious and absurdly huge! We ordered way too much food because of the large portions! Service was excellent! We encountered a short wait time, probably because it was in the middle of the week and they would be closing in less than an hour. Enjoy!
google avatar

Yelp
Joyce is a good restaurant good family atmosphere usually pretty good food prices are excellent can't go wrong if you're looking for a good place for breakfast
google avatar

Ronald B.

Yelp
Almost five years since my first review and Joy's Bakery is STILL the best in these parts. Same AMAZING comfort food. Same amazing, smiling waitresses. Same generous to huge portions. Same REASONABLE prices. It all STILL adds up to a five star rating for me. Try the Bakery Combo but sub out the home fries for their home made hash browns. They grill ham, peppers and onions, add cheese, top it with two eggs prepared how you like 'me and THEN cover it with the most SCRUMPTIOUS sausage gravy imaginable!!! Oh, I forgot to add in to get the home made biscuit. It's ginormous and comes with some of their home made jam too. Yum, yum!!! You won't go away hungry or disappointed.
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
Y'all this southern lady was so pleasantly surprised with the hospitality of these ladies. Came in on a Sunday, it was busy! Tables were spaced perfectly. Whatever you do make sure you get the sourdough bread and the 3 different jams! The Blackberry jam was lights out! We also had a butterhorn at recommendation, sooo good! Can't say enough about this little place, we asked for recommendations about what to do in towns we were visiting, and what else to do in Washington, and they were more than happy to oblige and spill all their knowledge!
google avatar

Tim S.

Yelp
Great food. Little cold though, but stil good. Good ambience. Large kitchen feel. Big portions. Cheaper breakfast.
google avatar

Mike W.

Yelp
Excellent breakfast! My sister recommended the coconut cakes and they were amazing. Portions are large. Easily split between 2 or come hungry. Wait staff are very busy but take time to answer questions and are super friendly. Looks like a regular local spot as wait staff are always acknowledging known customers. Highly recommend and would make this a must stop for breakfast or lunch when in the area.

Brandon K.

Yelp
Good stuff! Home made bread, good folks, always packed. My wife says try the coconut pancakes.

Cameron M.

Yelp
Great place!!! I had veggie omelette. Coming off a rush with a huge table next to me it took about 20 minutes to get my food but it was worth the wait. Steam coming off the food doesn't get fresher than that!
google avatar

Tracy D.

Yelp
Oh. My. God. I love this place for so many reasons. The food is amazing and they feed you like the loggers that used to populate this friendly little town. Service is quick and spot on and the wait is totally worth it. Small town conversations going on around you and quaint decorations make you feel like you're at grandmas house instead of a restaurant. My go-to is the eggs, hash browns, and ham. I will post a picture. The English muffins are awesome and the cinnamon rolls are to die for.
google avatar

Casey S.

Yelp
It had been a long week when we decided to finally try Joys. We didn't really have any expectations other than knowing that their cinnamon rolls were amazing. Oh. My. G. O. S. H.!!! Between the three of us, we ordered the chicken fried steak, the lighter fare pancake breakfast and the bakery combo. The chicken fried steak was amazing, it literally melted in your mouth and the gravy was light but plentiful! The lighter fare meal was a pancake (and bacon, my son skipped the egg) that was bigger than the plate! It was huge and sooo good. The bakery combo was enormous, it's not really my thing but my husband was over the moon. The real showstopper for us was the jam that came with the toast. It may sound silly but it tasted just like the freezer jam that my mom made when I was a kid and that I now make for my son. The meal was awesome and that jam was just the icing on the cake! We will be back many many times!

Elizabeth C.

Yelp
We were passing by and decided to grab breakfast at this little diner. So glad we did. While It was packed, many of the staff acknowledging many of its customers by name, they were so friendly and welcoming to us. We were served immediately after being seated. Hot coffee and beverages without delay. Our breakfasts were served fresh and hot. The portions were large. I ordered a single biscuit with gravy and it was enormous. It was more like the equivalent of two if we had been ordering anywhere else. The biscuit itself was delicious! Service was prompt with frequent checks on us throughout our meal to make sure we didn't need anything else, always super friendly (like smiling and enjoying waiting on us kind of friendly), and the food was delicious. And it wasn't just our server being like this. All of the staff appeared this way. Next time we're traveling through the area, we are returning to this gem!
google avatar

Bryant M.

Yelp
It's the place to be for breakfast. during the peak hours, there's barely an empty seat. Good food, great bakery items, and a friendly staff.
google avatar

Eron K.

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants for breakfast. The service can be good to great. Sometimes they're really busy so that can be a problem for the waitresses. If you go there on a Saturday or Sunday you might be waiting for us eat. But my belief is is this worth the wait.
google avatar

Joshua K.

Yelp
So, I'm always a sucker for a line, and when I'm driving through Small Town America Sedro Woolley and I see a line of locals out the door, it piques my interest. Although I had to wait about 30 minutes to get a table, it was more than worth it. Food was served quickly and piping hot. I feel the prices are more than worth it, especially considering the portion size. Went today with a party of 6, and every person, including the kiddos left with some leftovers. The food was just plain ole good too, with a very hearty home-cooked feel and taste to it. Will definitely return again. Well done!
