Where to Find Great Biscuits, Rolls, and Flatbreads in and Around Boston

"This Dorchester Caribbean spot is best known for its roti, a sort of curried stew which originated in the West Indies (specifically in Trinidad) served with — or swaddled by — flatbread like you’d find on the Indian subcontinent. The unleavened flatbread is grilled until its outside crisps and slightly bubbles, and is mainly used as a delivery mechanism for the shop’s excellent curries and stews. But the roti breads are also sold solo for $2.50 each — douse a piece with the housemade fiery pepper sauce if you dare. JP Roti Shop is open for pickup by calling the restaurant directly." - Nathan Tavares

Go to Dorchester, Roxbury, and Mattapan and Eat Roti - Eater Boston

"Go with the shrimp roti at JP Roti Shop. Owner Panka Deo told the Boston Globe a couple years back that people are always asking him if he’ll bring them “one of those Indian burritos. ” He went on to say, “I have to laugh. It makes sense and it doesn’t.” While roti has roots on the subcontinent, it is decidedly Trinidadian. According to the Globe story, Deo’s mastery of the dish was passed down from his mother, who used to make and sell them at a Trinidadian summer carnival in Roxbury." - Terrence Doyle

Google
Their doubles are on point. The best I’ve had in Boston . Weird process to tell one person what you want then go to the other dude to collect & pay but it works. They are friendly and relatively fast. The food serving area is always clean.

This neighborhood Roti spot is the jam! One of the best things I have eaten in Boston. Caribbean food in Dorchester is the truth. No frills place. Spoke to Woo who was super chill, and told me the history of JP Roti shop. Started out in the backyard 40 years ago and this is their second shop. No the most efficient and it can get hot in there but you forget all of that and realize why people come here. Food tastes homemade and you can taste the fresh roti being made with all the great curries that come in the Roti. I asked Woo what I should get and he said Chicken and Shrimp spicy. Woo was right, could only finish half of it, saw a lady get mad about her wait there but when she got the food she was like it’s worth it.

Google
The Best Roti in Boston. Because they are the best and their hours are so limited, they are always busy and crowded. Never call, just go in and place your order. I find that the wait time is a lot less. Wait time can range from 15 to 30. Don't go there if you are in rush. I assure you they are not playing around back there. Those employees are back there working and literally going as fast as they possibly can. The roti is so delicious, I been going to them for the last 8 years. I will never go anywhere else. Highly recommend.

Google
The roti didn't taste too good to me, nor did the doubles unfortunately. The sweet bread was great. The grocery part of the restaurant had some options that made me smile. I purchased about 40 dollars worth of groceries, seasonings and stuff. The flow of the restaurant could be better. You walk in and unless you already know, you would walk into the restaurant part of the place, but you actually have to go to the grocery side of the restaurant, place your order, they write what you want on a bag. You don't pay there, you pay on the restaurant side. You take your bag with the order written to the restaurant part, hand them the bag, then wait while others come in and out. Its kind of confusing. You can't really hear when your name is called, a few people got the wrong order. I actually watched a woman get the wrong order twice. I was waiting 45mins, I went back up and had to ask for my order. I was then told part of it was not ready still. I guess a positive are cashiers. They're friendly, and conversational. They definitely need a better layout. Who ordered ahead needs a separate line, who's waiting another. Roti 4 out of 10 bland Doubles 0 out of 10 I didn't even finish it. Price could also be better. I usually travel to Brooklyn NY for good trini roti, I will have to continue. I don't mind paying more if it tasted good, but I was disappointed. They have great drinks that remind you of Trinidad, but it was like 1 or 2 of each, so there's that. Very limited. ***update*** so after days of letting my last roti and doubles sit in my fridge I've had a change of heart. The doubles actually is good. I actually opened the doubles and noticed what happened. 5hey put some nasty green stuff in it that I was able to remove, and it was good after. The roti was still a little bland, but did taste a little better. Doubles gets a 7 out of 10 because no tambrind was available. Roti.. 5 out of 10 still.

Google
We can talk about how good the food is all day, but with horrible customer service it makes everything seem like garbage. I’m done with JP roti next time I crave roti I rather go out of state or make it at home!

Brian Celestine

Google
I got a doubles. The look, is emblematic of Trinidad doubles, but the taste was not quite there. I did not try the roti therefore could not comment on that.

Google
The best Roti's in Boston OMG. It was suggested that I add pumpkin to my roti by the cashier and now I can't live without it. Thanks JP Roti.... Your Roti's are Deeeeeeeelicious ❤️❤️❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥🔥

I love going here the roti and delicious and so good I would do anything to get more

Yelp
I remember eating roti from Mrs Marguerite and her family business. She started from her own kitchen and back shed and had obstacles but and her husband and their family was able to finally obtain a spot for their business in Dorchester, Massachusetts. The food is always delicious. The Roti, Bus up shot, and everything made in that establishment is delicious. love you Mrs Marguerite, and thank you for all the years of service with your delicious cuisine. I love that you're in my neighborhood right around the corner. I can walk or drive but you're not far and that is a plus please continue to produce great service, and of course delicious foods of your culture descent of Trinidad and Tobago!!!

Yelp
OMG! The best roti! I ordered from them when they were in someone a house. And kept ordering when they moved. Fresh and tasty! LOVE the pumpkin and Channa. Boneless chicken is YUMM! Quick , popular takeout spot - staff is friendly even when it's busy.
google avatar

Patrice C.

Yelp
Shrimp/chicken with everything roti including pumpkin, oh soooo good. I shared one with my husband and couldn't get enough so an hour later I went back to get my own but they was sold out. Agh! and because they don't open every day, I had to wait 3 whole days and guess what? When I got my own I was happy as a . The best roti(s)
google avatar

Curtis J.

Yelp
Been here the last 2 Saturdays. I recommend ordering ahead but the roti is delicious. I get 2 shrimp and beef rotis for under 40 bucks. I'll be back

Cleopatra L.

Yelp
This is my favorite roti spot but the last few times they keep messing up my order. It's so much work for me to get to the resturant. I always order a chicken and shrimp roti. They keep leaving out my shrimp. Not to mention the shrimp is extra. They don't pick up the phone so your can't leave a complaint. I think there needs to be a better system or unfortunately I'll go somewhere else
google avatar

Yelp
Five stars for the food. Less one star for the wait time. The food is SO good and you get a lot for a little! Authentic, flavorful, local. Yes and yes again!! If they had a more efficient process that might help with the wait time, but honestly I am so here for this food. I came for the first time yesterday and stopped by again today. It's that good! What to expect: when you enter you'll order at the counter in the "store" section. They will write your order and name on a paper bag, you then bring said paper bag to the "restaurant" section and wait. Bring your patience because you will wait during this time (15+ minute easily). They'll call your name to retrieve your bag, you pay then GRUB!!

Lea P.

Yelp
This Roti spot is a hidden gem! The service is quick and efficient, and the food is absolutely delicious. The staff is always friendly, even in the summer time when it's wayyyy to hot to be cooking. Loyal customers will call in advance to put in their order. However, if you don't get a chance to call ahead it's DEF worth the wait in line people, their Roti is the best in Boston!
google avatar

Tee W.

Yelp
Looooong azz waitbut food always on point!! Otherwise worth it... much better than all Ali's!!
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
Very flavorful vegetable roti! It was a delicous and generous portion.

Stacia S.

Yelp
Good rotis, the only thing is they don't give you curry goat as an option, only beef. And they're kinda small compared to other roti shops roti's but this place is good though and can get very crowded with long wait times. It's better to order ahead to save yourself time.
google avatar

Christian M.

Yelp
The food is amazing but it's such an ordeal to order food sometimes it's not worth it. You call ahead, to be told your food would be ready in 20 mins, to arrive and still be kept waiting. It's honestly ridiculous. The place is always busy, they def need more help to keep up with the volume of ordered they get. But no one has time to wait upwards of an hr for a roti, no matter how magnificent it tastes

Yelp
I have been trying to explore all the restaurant within walking distance of my place, and finally was nearby while they were open- had to give it a try! We got a beef roti and it was delicious, filling and CHEAP! - I think it was $9 and it fed two of us. Not the best picture, but there was a ton of super tender beef, some lovely potatoes and other veggies and delicious curry, a bit of spice, too! Wrapped in this soft yummy flat bread. So so so good.

Kazz K.

Yelp
Was my favorite local business to spend my money at, But after today I'll be taking a long break from here. Friendly staff great food but the service was awful. Called ahead, got there had to wait 45 minutes, and still didn't get my full order. Hopefully when/if I do return the service will be on par with the tasty food and friendly staff
google avatar

Therese M.

Yelp
The best Roti in all the town. I used to go when I was a kid , it was in JP still the same flavor. So delicious, the people are so friendly. I'd give 10 stars if I could.
google avatar

Haja F.

Yelp
Really like the roti here. If you are looking for some authentic Trinidadian roti this is the place to visit. I like the boneless chicken roti ($8.50). Very affordable and has a lot of flavor. They have other Trinidadian goodies that you can try. Everything seem reasonably priced. It gets pretty busy but service is fast. They have some seats inside but most people take their food to go.They are not open every day of the week (Thursday, Friday, Saturday), you'll have to plan your visit around that.
google avatar

Lakshmy Divya S.

Yelp
This spot has excellent food for a dime. I get the plate with the roti on the side vs wrapping it up like a burrito primarily so it doesn't get soggy and I can eat it over a couple of meals. The wait time takes awhile, so order ahead of time by at least an hour.
google avatar

Shaquille A.

Yelp
This has to be one of the top roti shops in boston hands down, i love them. They would get 5 stars only if they made you roti in a timely fashion. The wait once you get there for your roti is insane and if you call it in they just move you to the head of the line once you get there instead of actually making it when you call. Great place, authentic food, amazing flavor, well worth it! Just takes a bit

Yelp
4/20/18 - I visited my friend a couple of weeks ago and she introduced me to JP Roti. It was so good. So much so, that I braved Boston traffic to drive to Dorchester this past Friday. I got the Shrimp Roti w/chick peas, Pumpkin Squash and mixed vegetables. I love it. Hardy, little spicy, a little sweet. My Mom preferred it without the pumpkin. Instead of a Roti, you can buy a plate. She will do that in the future. I didn't give 5 stars because of the location. It's on a busy Main Street and during afternoon and evenings, there isn't a place to park that's near to the restaurant . Because it's a great eat, it's packed. The line to order is ridiculous. One last thing, the Roti's bread should be smaller. The wrapping of bread is way too much. They did get my order wrong this past visit, but it's not going to stop me from going again. When I'm IN Boston though.

Yelp
The shrimp roti is phenomenal!!!! I wait hours for the goodness! when a place is busy, you know the food is good.
google avatar

Shanice G.

Yelp
The best roti in Boston hands down! And very reasonable prices !! So authentic and freshly made to order. I got the shrimp and potato roti and it was tasteful; the best roti I ever had!
google avatar

Diedre H.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place and their staff. I usually get the Shrimp Roti everything including hots on the side.
google avatar

Adri D.

Yelp
The BEST roti in Boston hands down! I've tried other places and felt violated by what was put in front of me. Here, the service is great. The people are friendly, it is family run, and black owned! What could be better?! Oh yeah, the flavor....hold on while I clean up my drool. Gah! The flavor is amazing, the beef is sooooo tender, and the potatoes always have the perfect bite to them and the fresh veg always crunchy. Its a party in your mouth and sweet, spicy, and savory were all invited! The roti is huge and its always hard to finish...but I do! There are only two negatives...the long wait and the boneless chicken. To avoid the wait call ahead and make your order...but be sure to pick it up or stragglers like me will come in at the final hr and buy all unclaimed goodies!!!! As far as the boneless chicken...its pretty dry due to the amazing cooking process that takes all morning. But thats OK, tgey have bone-in chocken.versions as well. My suggestion to them is to use boneless chocken thighs. Omg! That would be epic! Anyway, get here. Support a Black/Caribbean owned business! Maybe buy two because if not...you'll be back the following day. O

Valdene M.

Yelp
I like this place but I have a few reservations. To start, the food is really good, I prefer their fillings and sides compared to Ali's but their actual Roti dough is not as good. My favorite is curried goat roti (when you can get it), with potato, channa and slight pepper. The opening days and hours are very wonky, and the ordering experience and the physical space can be improved upon. This is not the best place to enjoy your meal, I recommend to go orders only.
google avatar

Venessa R.

Yelp
Its getting a 4 because it's not open 6 or 7 days a week and the hours are weird. They run out of food fast so come before 5pm. The wait is kinda long, but I dont mind because the Roti is amazing. And! They sell peanut punch here which I love!

Zoe S.

Yelp
Without a doubt, the best roti in Boston. I am always homesick and craving a roti, and recently heard about this place so I knew I had to try it. Although the wait was long, soca was blasting from a speaker so I had a good time waiting lol. And the wait was definitely worth it. Extremely authentic and tasty. I am ready to go back already!
google avatar

Allister G.

Yelp
The SLOWEST place in town. Don't bother calling ahead of time!!! All these yrs. service is still slow!!!!
google avatar

Sincere J.

Yelp
Had palorie, sorrel and Roti. Half of my Roti is in the fridge because I'm stuffed. Only thing more I would have wanted was tamarind sauce for my palorie but all was good that's why I don't have much to show you. Better luck next time. Oh and I had a shrimp Roti with the works. At least I made it to the earlier today.
google avatar

Stacey J.

Yelp
Best roti in town! Food is delicious! I can't complain. BUT the only issue is the wait...if they can change their process when an order is placed. You can call and place your order but your order will not be prepared until you arrive there. It causes a LONG wait in line. I think their service would move faster if they prepared the meal as soon as the order is placed. That way the food can be ready by the time the person shows up. Instead, you're waiting in line with other people (other people that have either placed an order over the phone or in person).

Patrice J.

The best roti(s) ever.

Em J.

Yelp
Theeee BEST Roti PERIOD. I have tried other places and all fails... my friend moved to New York and we tried some spots out there.....FAILS- I have to bring her JP Rotis whenever I go. The pumpkin is amazing, they use just enough curry! I had all kinds except the chicken but I hear it's good too. I just need them to start selling pholourie (and maybe even doubles) LoL pictured below is the shrimp Roti w/ everything and Veggie Roti w/ everything. This place is a must try
google avatar

MrsLovered J.

Yelp
The best Roti shop in Boston... I live a hour away and come down to get my roti from them...
google avatar

Nes S.

Yelp
Amazing Roti! I got the curry chicken and shrimp combo.. long lines but its definitely worth the wait! Check them out if you are a fan of Roti, you will not be disappointed.

Kayla S.

Yelp
Literally the best roti shop in Boston. Never fails me every time I order here. The vibe as soon as you walk in is so welcoming and it's an added plus to hear great music and be greeted with a smile by everyone who works here! The food is so flavorful and rich! And the Sorrel is amazingggggg!! Fave spot to go to!! You WILL NOT be disappointed coming here!!
google avatar

Amit G.

Yelp
Waited 20 minutes for a burrito. And apparently that's not out of the ordinary because when I asked when the food will be ready the owner insulted me and said why have you been waiting for 45 minutes or something and then laughed in my face. Then they pressured me to give them cash instead of taking a credit card. And after all that the food wasn't even that great. The place looked a lot less sanitary than I expected also.
google avatar

Thiana D.

Yelp
The BEST roti restaurant in Massachusetts!!! Very convenient location. Friendly environment and delicious delicacies uhhmmmm
google avatar

Acia A.

Yelp
Well worth the wait! Curry green beans, sweet potao, chickpeas and then moist, tasty meat all nicely wrapped in a warm roti skin. Yes, I'll have another and another please!

Trevene R.

Yelp
Service was HORRIBLE... Went in and ordered 2 rotis. One chicken, one shrimp. I was told 15 minutes by the young man that took the order ( order was written on a white paper bag). While I was waiting he was told to stop taking orders. As I am waiting way past the 15 minutes a Jamaican man came in to order and was told that they aren't taking anymore orders, he called out to a young man behind the counter, i believe his name was Rasheed who came thought the side door and took his order. Now 30+ minutes of me waiting this dude gets his order in less than $10 minutes. Some 40+ minutes they called me for my order, the cashier gives me my total and three price just didn't make sense. When I questioned him about how many rotis where in the bag he said 1 roti with shrimp and BONELESS chicken, now, remember they"ran out" of boneless chicken some 45 minutes ago . Someone rewrote the order on a new bag and gave me someone else's order who didn't show up. To top it off the roti wad tasteless. I think it's safe to say I will NOT be returning
google avatar

Andrea D.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem! Forget Ali's roti or any of the other shops this place em beat! I had the boneless chicken roti for $9 with everything plus hots and when I say bomb I mean it um! They also put way more veggies including mash sweet potatoes the (orange one not the white/grey one), green beans, potatoes, chick peas of course and this incredible curry base! The roti skin was perfect it had chick peas between the skin and was so nice and tender and delicious you can eat it on your own! And they are also a good size I ate about half and its still plenty left! They also sell a lot of fave Carribean drinks including mauby which i bought for $2 and it was delicious. I would definitely recommend anyone to go try this place! Get you a trini style roti you will not be disappointed I promise!
google avatar

Serious S.

Yelp
Half my family swears by JP Roti. I think their Roti is dry dry dry and lacks flavor except for some bland curry. Price is high while staff are rude and condescending and you have to look deep for your meat as the amount of dry potato is extremely overwhelming. But I guess they need to fill the dried out Roti skin. The wait time for this pricey, dry mess is crazy long and damn near unreasonable! To be honest I'd rather Ali's, even though I bit into a pebble in my Roti one day and almost broke a tooth. Ugh! But at least their Roti is juicy, tasty and they jam the meat in! Service isn't the best at Ali's either, but certainly better and faster than the abuse you get at JP Roti! My peeps tricked me and got my Roti from JP's on Saturday presenting it as a NEW spot thinking it would change my mind, but nope. Took two bites and the rest of it went bad in the fridge. I'm a terrific cook of Caribbean dishes and have been in the consulting and service industry for years and I just don't understand the hype or why folks put up with bad service.

S K.

Yelp
The only downside to JP Roti is their being open only three days per week. Patience persists and their boneless chicken with everything is well worth the wait.

Lyric J.

Yelp
Awe man they forgot to give me pumpkin ! Other than that my Roti was good. All my pumpkin lovers really know how I'm feeling right now!
google avatar

Piff M.

Yelp
my favorite place but even tho they close at 630 dont go there after 515 or u gonnz get half a meal yo ima need yall to have the whole thing all day family no offense

Ariana G.

Yelp
This is a staple in my life. I faithfully get roti from here every other weekend. No other roti shop in Boston could compete with the taste or quality of JP Roti Shop's food. The wait is always worth it - trust me.

Michelle M.

Yelp
Placed a phone order an hour before I got there and it still wasn't ready. The Roti is good but they are disrespectful to people's time. Will not be going back
google avatar

Ashley A.

Yelp
I Really Wanted To Like This Place I Really Did.. Everytime I Walked By It The Smell Of The Curry Was Heavenly So Today On A Whim I Said I'd Try It... The Ordering System Is Very Confusing The was a Guy Sitting at the A table writing orders on a white paper bag.. it's very limited as to what goes into the roti.. I Got The Boneless Curry Chicken and Shrimp With String Beans Potato and Mango.. I then give my bag with my order to the lady behind kitchen area.. I watched as my order as long as others are made they are very skimpy when it comes the meat.. they call you're name you then pay... so I finally get to enjoy it the roti skin it self lacks basic flavor I had a total of 4shrimp the chicken was very dry and bland I think the only season it had was the Curry. The green beans were under cooked and they chopped them so small... I literally paid for a potato roti, I'll stick to Ali's Roti Shop

Darlene A.

Yelp
Wait time even after calling is beyond ridiculous. Also, the preference given to friends is outrageous. Food is good, but not worth the wait or hassel.

Guissela M.

Yelp
Been having their Roti for years, since the JP days, and can honestly say that I've never had better! Not to mention the lovely crew, always friendly, sweet and pleasant-they create a family like environment even if you are a 1st timer.

Marie R.

Yelp
Very busy place so the food took quite a while. The food was good but the pepper was weaker than I like. I like my Trini food with HOT pepper.
