The 13 Best Barbecue Restaurants In LA - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"We’re not sure what we like better at JR’s: eating the Memphis-style barbecue or listening to Robert, the owner, lovingly razz everyone in line. We’ll call it a draw—they’re both great. This order-at-the-window spot in Culver City has been around since 1998 and draws weekend lines that snake around their gravel parking lot. This is Memphis-style ‘cue, so pork is king, but our go-to order is the large beef ribs dinner. For $26, you get two sides (go with baked beans and creamy potato salad) and a half-rack of massive, smoky, slightly sweet ribs. You’ll have to wait a bit at the picnic tables for your food, but don’t stray far. If you aren’t ready when your name is called, you’re going to hear about it from Robert." - brant cox, sylvio martins

The beef brisket was too lean, the beef ribs were overcooked. Both dry. The BBQ sauce couldn't even save it. The coleslaw had fruit in it in a way that wasn't complementary. The mac was mushy and was probably the best dish but there was a low bar. Potato salad was decent as most BBQ spots' potato salads are. The staff weren't unfriendly but pretty low energy. As another review noted, La Cienega is noisy so if you decide to move forward with eating from here, get it to-go.

Google
The food was very delicious. The portions were more than enough for four of us. It was truly a great experience.

I moved to Southern California for the first time back in 1979. I only stayed a year. Came back in 85. Since I left the mid-West, I have missed so many things. Especially good tasting food, cleaner drinking water and air. I miss the more neighborly people and less crowded communities. The weather has kept me here, but the food just doesn't measure up. BBQ is one of those things that I just don't get, here in the South Bay area. I feel good about spending my money on black owned businesses, but this food was not something to drive across town for. If you don't like Northern Illinois BBQ then totally disregard my comments altogether. As long as I have lived in California, I've yet to be satisfied with the food options.

Google
I was really hoping to like this place but the meat was so dry I couldn’t finish it even with bbq sauce. The brisket and pulled pork had no flavor, the beef links had good seasoning but also too dry. I’m giving 2 stars instead of 1 because their cake is good

Google
Here's the scoop.. The meats are A1! 🤌🏿 The sides need "Major work" you hear me! 👎🏿--with exception to the beans, which were good. 7up cakes was good, cornbread muffins was really good. Lastly, food was pricey for a "hole in the wall" joint. I won't be going back soon, but do highly recommend the meat 🍖 options

I stood in line behind this lady before their advertised closing time and the cashier was on the phone for some time. It turns out the lady had placed a large order ahead of time and when she got there they didnt have it. She stepped aside while they prepared it and when it was my turn it was 6 mins before closing and the cashier said, "You picking up or ordering?" I said, "Ordering." He flat out said, "we closed now." I would rather take my money elsewhere than this small business that was too lazy to take a small order compared to the one that lady placed.

Google
Got the two meat combo, brisket and beef ribs with hot sauce on side, potato salad and beans. Meat was a bit dry but flavorful and can taste the smokiness. The sauce wasn’t overpowering and complimented the meat nicely. Potato salad was a bit more mashed than expected but the baked beans were great. Portions were on point. In total spent $29 (with tip).

Google
Pulled pork sandwich is amazing! Great flavor and portion size. Beans were also very good just a bit small. Man that took my order was very nice. Wonderful experience I’ll definitely be returning

Yelp
I give this bbq 5 freaking stars!!! The meat is outstanding and tender. The smoke and flavor is a work of art, but the sauce, the sauce is the faithful side kick. I love bbq that can stand with or without the sauce and this bbq does. It is consistently cooked! I hear at least 4 times a month. It's my treat to myself and it's worth it! The sides are great too. The baked mac and cheese is exceptional and the baked beans will make you slap somebody's momma! For me I didn't love the potato salad or greens. I gave them each a 3. But that personal preference. Overall, I love this spot! My favorite bbq spot in Los Angeles!

Yelp
A toilet-hugging experience. Don't. Just. Don't. This place cost me $74 for take-out dinner for two, and a day and a half of work to follow... I ordered two 2 meat combos; one with brisket and beef ribs, the other with rib tips and sausage. Both came with coleslaw and potato salad. $68.xx + tip came to ~$74 total. I was offended by the price from the get go, but had high hopes for a mind blowing experience I wasted no time unboxing and devouring my meal. To my dismay, none of the meats tasted good. Truly, not a single one of the four were at all noteworthy. They lacked flavor, texture, did not taste fresh, and the sauces were lacking, too, so no saving the meal there The potato salad was truly awful and lacking in portion size (just one plastic ramekin size serving per two-meat combo). It lacked flavor and was nothing special. I'm not picky, but this didn't make the cut --straight to the trash it went The coleslaw tasted good --it wasn't heavy or very sweet. Felt more like a slightly over-dressed cabbage salad. I didn't mind it, and I'm not a coleslaw person. It was also lacking in portion size (one plastic ramekin size serving) The corn bread (cost extra) was the real masterpiece of this meal --probably because it was sweet and moist. The serving size was that of a small muffin. It tasted great actually. I wish my entire meal were the coleslaw and cornbread --would've served as a much better experience Sock-it-to-me cake -- basically a dense cinnamon mini loaf. Dry, doughy, with cheap Betty Crocker-esq frosting thinly spread across the top. Basically inedible. I had two bites and trashed the rest. Did I mention I'm generally not a picky eater? This was quite disappointing The next day: I had to take the day off work; I woke up feeling absolutely terrible and was physically ill for a day and a half to follow. Let's just say the rib tips did not sit well with me and ended up coming out the same way they went in. As someone with a stomach built from steel, this REALLY upset me (physically and psychologically). I'm not only terrified of this restaurant, I'm not sure I can look at BBQ the same way ever again This was the worst $74 I've spent in a long time. If you're reading this, I hope you spare yourself the disappointment

Yelp
Another long overdue review! JR's meats are always falling off the bone. Tender and fresh. I like it with medium heat sauce. Customer service is always on point. Fast and always accurate. Thank you.

Yelp
Best barbecue in the area. This location is located just off the interstate. The food never disappoints. Over several visits, I have tried all of their meat offerings. Everything is great. My favorite two are the pulled pork and smoked turkey. You order at the counter and the open kitchen starts prepping your food right in front of you. In a minute or two you are sitting at one of the many tables enjoying the feast. All of their sides are good. Looking forward to my next visit.

Yelp
Travelers on vacation looking for some good food and The man on the phone is SUPER RUDE.!!!!!! Hung up on us and said "he don't feel like taking our order" definitely never order from here . Rude as hell . Not sure if he having a bad day but disgusting service Also we were perfectly fine paying extra for the sides he didn't want to substitute, and he just started huffing and puffing on the phone . Like sir you work here please be a little professional when WE ARE the ones being nice and trying to spending a good amount of money at this food place. This is the type of customer service that literally ruins company's names. We ordered from a better restaurant and was treated very nicely and ate some fire food ELSEWHERE. If you plan on ordering more than "3 of the same thing be careful because you'll for sure be getting hung up on due to the rude ass man not " feeling like taking the order ". Talk about embarrassing service .

Yelp
I'm going with a 3 because I don't know what to make of this place. For some reason, it doesn't taste or smell like authentic bbq. I just did t get a good read on it. The chicken was a bit dry. It was over-cooked and not as easy to eat, as I would've liked. It simply kept getting g stuck while swallowing. Ya, pretty disappointing. The corn was decent. I think they boiled it versus grilled it. I'm truly not sure I'd try Jr's again. Driving by, it doesn't even smell like a bbq spot. So weird. Once again, I'm not sure what to make of this. I miss the bbq smell and the food I received lacked the authentic smell and taste too. Final Word: Exceptionally Average.

Yelp
Such good bbq! Being from Mississippi originally, I'm very picky. Robert the owner was a doll. Came to chat with us. I like mayo and pickles with bbq sauce on side for my pulled pork sandwich. He admitted he does too. Great baked beans Pecan pie yum too. Great meal before The Rolling Stones epic concert. Been too long since I've been to Jrs. You gotta go.

Yelp
JR's Barbecue overcharged my bank account for $50.00 when the total on my receipt was $44.23. I called them and they insisted that I wrote in a tip. Which I did not. i Will never go to their establishment again. I warn anyone that goes to JR's barbecue to be vigilant and check their receipts. I very disappointed.

Yelp
Got the three meat combo with two sides. -Rib Tips: the best meat they got! These were AMAZING and next time I'm getting ONLY rib tips! (Not to be confused with Small End Ribs) -Beef Ribs: these were good. juicy and almost fall off the bone (if you ever get fall off the bone, it means it's overcooked) -Brisket: had high expectations. They were not met. These were good with extra sauce but were pretty normal otherwise. I'd still order it again. -Slaw: tangy and delicious but yes it's on the sour side -Potato Salad: this was amazing and I wish I got more

Yelp
I was craving peach cobbler so bad and stopped in expecting to get my socks blown off. I popped in and grabbed two peach cobblers to go. When I got home I felt the bottom of the bag and it was ice cold. Unbeknownst to me the serve ice cold cobbler. Who serves COLD cobbler? I pulled the cobbler out the bag to see they were individual pies poorly wrapped. Juice all over the place. I tried my best to be positive and pop them in the oven.. maybe the flavor would redeem cold ass cobbler. Wrong! It was a bland mess, legit canned peaches and a dash of standard cobbler flavors. Even after warming them up the crust wasn't flaky, it was chewy, So disappointing. Never again.

Yelp
Craving BBQ for dinner I came to JR's. 11/03/2023 7:30pm I received a warm greeting from the guy taking the orders. He was very friendly and gave great options. The food didn't take long to come out at all. Probably 10 minutes at the most. He thanked me and invited me back. The bbq aroma filled my car the entire way home. Once I got home I tore open the bag and went to work. The Mac n cheese was good and creamy. The chicken links were delicious as well. Potato salad was good with a nice texture and I could have eaten a dozen of those corn bread muffins. I will definitely be back when the craving returns. Great business!

Francois W.

Yelp
I could've kept my $47, ribs were warm potato salad was warmer than the ribs, brisket was bad, first and last time eating this garbage, bland potato salad, bbq was not tasteful, if you think this is good bbq you really don't know what good bbq is, not to mention the small cup there sides are in, smh!!!
google avatar

George T.

Yelp
I went JR's I had a taste for BBQ food was good the staff was nice so I came back again. I had the brisket
google avatar

Samantha K.

Yelp
This is a walk up and order at the window place. They have tables outside if you want to eat there and a private lot. The person who took my order was very friendly, but the wait to get the food was pretty long considering I only got two meals. I thought it was pretty average and the sides were nothing to write home about. Overall, an okay bbq spot but wouldn't go out of my way to come back.
google avatar

Lala L.

Yelp
I ordered the beef brisket sandwich with the sauce on the side. The brisket was delicious; moist and flavorful. It came with a small side (I chose potato salad) it was good. The only reason I didn't give it a rating of 5 out of 5 is the wait time. I suggest calling in your order. I'm definitely recommending JR's!
google avatar

Renee P.

Yelp
Horrible white meat chicken. I started going to JR's because Phillip's bbq changed the supplier for their chicken links and I don't like the new links. JR's chicken links are delicious and so are the ribs, but the chicken is so dry it's ridiculous. When I picked my order up I told the owner the first time I got chicken it was dry. He said I should have told him. When I got home and found the chicken to be dry again, I called to let him now, but the young lady that answered the phone said he left. So much for letting him know about the dry chicken. I'll have to go back to Phillip's for my chicken, it's never dry.

Adrian B.

Yelp
This review is for any Tennesseans in LA missing home. Between this and Gus's, it's as close to home as you're gonna get in the city. About cried Just be sure to order extra BBQ sauce

Jack B.

Yelp
Really quaint bbq spot that's worth trying. It's not perfect however, it's priced a little high and I've been disappointed with the quality of the sides before (I'm not ordering the mac and cheese again) but the main bbq plates and sandwiches are well made. 7-up cake also took me by surprise, the name and concept made me wary but really it's just a very pleasant lemon flavored cake that feels like it perfectly accents a meal at JR's. I've had much better barbecue in my life and while I wouldn't put JR's at the top of my list I can definitely encourage people try it out
google avatar

Andrew L.

Yelp
Good value for the money, I ordered a plate and they give you a good amount of food. Note for the Chef/Owner: have you tasted your food? Add some salt or some seasoning to it. Jesus Christ, it is extremely bland and dry. Have you had any bbq from any other place? Add some flavors, see what other people are doing, I know seasoning is not gonna ruin your profit margin. Bbq isn't just meat you need to season the food.

Yelp
I draw the line at disrespect. I called in to place an order and a person who sounded like the owner, answered the phone, "JR's", followed by silence. I'm not trying to be petty, but i was expecting a "how can I help you" or, "can you please hold" or " home of fatback and gristle" ; something! As I was about to say "Hello", to ensure i was still connected, the phone hangs up abruptly. I am immediately called back, because I've eaten here before and I feel like this is a misunderstanding. When I called back, the phone was answered, but this time no one said anything as I'm waiting for an acknowledgment I hear, " are you gonna sit on the phone, or , Are you gonna say something? This unprofessionalism, totally shocked me, because I recognized the voice as belonging to one of the owners. Before I could respond, i was hung up on a second time. I called back, but I won't waste your time with what occurred this time because it got ugly. Needless to say I will not be going back to JR's, not only because of the disagreement, because I have overlooked much more in the past, such as occasionally subpar food. by them. But I draw the line at disrespect. besides the barbecue at Maple Block is 10 times better.

Jair L.

Yelp
Dude at the counter was super friendly. Food, brisket sandwich was great. Love the smokey flavor. Serving size was decent for what I got. "Dirty water" Arnold Palmer, was great. Coleslaw was good as well. Nothing was overpowering nor dripping in juices. I would only say the serving size for this was a little lackluster. I only gave a 4 star review because I have to come back and try something else, a lot of something else's. Will be coming back for sure!
google avatar

Brandon B.

Yelp
Ordered the brisket sandwich and all beef hot dog. Food was excellent, sweet tea was perfect. The facility was clean. Great experience!! Would definitely recommend and return
google avatar

Aaron F.

Yelp
Baked beans were good, Brisket, Chicken and Rib Tips taste terrible. I wouldn't order from here again.
google avatar

Phillip V.

Yelp
Ugh... I want to like this place. It's local and should be good. Prices are decent but you're better off paying a bit more for quality. I've ordered the bbq platter before and it was decent. Recently I ordered delivery this Sunday. The pork ribs were bad and the chicken tasted old. The only redeeming dishes were the beef ribs and beef sausage. My friends and I all felt underwhelmed and sick after eating. We ended up throwing away the pork ribs and the chicken and only ate the beef ribs and sausage. Mac n cheese (which we ordered) was not included so no review. Ordered the greens and they needed salt. If you're local and want BBQ then order from Bludsos or Holly Cow.

Leonardo M.

Yelp
Good BBQ, great sauce, even better service. Must try in LA. Worth the price. Was given my order swiftly. Will come back soon.
google avatar

Julia P.

Yelp
Best bbq I've had here in LA :) I've lived right around the corner for years but never tried it. The woman working there was very friendly as well. I'll definitely be coming back!
google avatar

Jeff A.

Yelp
Good ribs, great sauce. Very weak side orders. Ribs came with a couple slices of wonder bread. Come on do better
google avatar

Arlene L.

Yelp
Not too expensive but a bit disappointing. The brisket was dry and had no flavor not smoky at all. The bbq sauce didn't help much. It was just ok. Wouldn't come back.
google avatar

Glen C.

Yelp
I don't eat meat often. Not a meat-lover. Even so, somehow I ended up trying some of JR's meats today. Hmmm, that brisket. Wow. Now, if were to get a high-confidence forecast of an extinction-level asteroid impact here, I would really very much appreciate a warm slice of JR's brisket and some of JR's hot sauce with my last meal. I would like that very much. I think you need to try it, reader. Go there and try the brisket, just once. You will be glad that you did.
google avatar

Shay T.

Yelp
Ordered takeout from JR's this past weekend and we were pleased with the size portions. We ordered full ribs with potato salad and beans. The amount of ribs was as expected but the sides were in large containers, which was a pleasant surprise. Also, the lady taking our order was very nice. As far as the flavor goes, nothing stood out. The potato salad and beans were basic, like grocery store basic. The ribs were not tender or falling off the bone. They also lacked seasoning but had plenty of basic flavored bbq sauce.

Richard M.

Yelp
Found this place a couple years ago while on vacation in the LA area. I come back each year when in town because it's simply the best BBQ that you'll find in SoCal! Being from Arkansas, it takes a lot to impress on BBQ, but if you're traveling like me or live in the area, this is the place to go. And, they give healthy portions that aren't hard on the pocketbook, and that's something that's hard to beat in this day and time. And sitting outside is pretty cool too. JR's BBQ in Culver City. I highly recommend it!
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Wanted to try this place and finally got my chance yesterday via take-out. Brisket and Baby Back Ribs with a couple of sides including their amazing cornbread muffins. Here's my two cents: the sauce was in a separate container and had a little vinegar base - enough for all of the food we ordered. The sides were good but nothing extraordinary (Slaw / Mac n Cheese) but, the star of the meal was the meat, and it was amazing! Not super fatty, falling off the bone, and smoked to perfection. A small independent business, in a crazy restaurant market, that makes good food also means something to me.
google avatar

Giovanni F.

Yelp
Ribs are good. Super tender delivery was fast. Abidance don't know I order deliver.

Gary L.

Yelp
I love this place! It's the only place I go to for BBQ in Los Angeles! Family run. Black owned and food is phenomenal! The beef ribs are tender and delicious and are my favorite. Brisket and pulled pork amazing. Desserts and sides are ALL GOOD!!! This is definitely a once a month go to
google avatar

Alyssa P.

Yelp
Got the three meat platter. Sides were pretty small in little plastic dixie cup like containers so I do wish they had bigger portions on that. And the sides to choose from were limited to beans, slaw and potato salad. But the flavor of meat and sauce were amazing. The medium is one of my favorite bbq sauces ever had! I'll be back if I'm in the area.
google avatar

Una M.

Yelp
Not as good as I remember. Been coming here since they opened. Hadn't been for awhile. Smelled the bbq the other day and wanted to pick some up. Dude smoking right outside pickup window. No more inside seating. Charged $57 (whole chicken, 1/2 lb "brisket" and rib tips that weren't even bbq-Ed) and they didn't include any sides of the sides advertised with the order online. I know this is a family business, but this did not taste good at all. Very below my expectations and disappointing.
google avatar

Mel M.

Yelp
Wow!!! This place delicious! I'm always looking for good bbq and this is by far the best in the area. The brisket sandwich was so flavorful and a great portion. My co workers got the ribs and said they were out of this world! The man working (he may be the owner) was so nice! It was fast and ready for pick up when I arrived. I highly recommend!
google avatar

Roch B.

Yelp
JR's is the NO BS BBQ. I have to admit, I got a little schooled placing my first order here...showing up a minute or two before closing time and then not knowing exactly what I wanted was a near fatal error. JR: " I almost called this session..." (I deserved that!) JR was cool after the school, and set us up with tender delicious PORK RIBS, BAKED BEANS, and MEMPHIS CHICKEN HOT LINKS that were outta sight. Next time...I'll know!

Mr M.

Yelp
Best beef ribs I've had since I left Texas I took one bite meat tender juicy falling off the bone whole Lotta flavor omg hands down best ribs in Los Angeles

Yelp
Takeout Review We were craving BBQ and found JR's on yelp - reviews looked pretty good but when I re-read some of the reviews again, many did mention that their experience has been inconsistent - very good on some days not so good on other days. I must've picked an off day which is very unfortunate since I LOVE bbq & have been choosing places to support very carefully. i've eaten a lot of BBQ in my time - all around LA and also when I traveled to other states (including TN-Memphis). This was probably my lease favorite ever, 2 stars only because I'm being very nice. The baby back rib, brisket, rib tip, beef hot link -all extremely dry. I had to slather it with their bbq sauce (which was just ok). Their sides - coleslaw was not my favorite. Their potato salad was probably the best thing I had and it was just so-so. Though my experience was poor, it seems like this place is a favorite for many Angelinos so like I already mentioned, I may have experienced a very "off" day. But for me, I don't plan to go back - I already have some of my favorites places (and consistent) so I think I'll stick to those.

Yelp
JR's is a small bbq joint in LA. Inside reminds me of the bbq joints I visited in Memphis. I ordered ahead so I did not have to wait. Weekends get busy and the wait can be long. Beef Ribs Slab - $34 - Big ribs. Half we tough, half fell off the bone. Baby Back Ribs Slab - $27 - Dry Brisket, 1/2 lb - $10 - The fatty side were semi moist and tender but the flat was dry. Whole Chicken - $16 - Dark meat was decent, white meat was again sadly dry. Dry rub was good but I think the grill temp was super high for this cook cause everything was pretty dry. It needed to be overly dunked in their sauce to save it. Mild sauce had more flavor then the medium. Potato Salad, 6 oz - $2.75 - Basic Corn on the Cob - $1 - Not even a full corn, its a small half boiled cob. Mac n Cheese - $4.50 - Cheesy Collard Greens, 6 oz - $4 - Best of the side, helps cut the meat. Was really excited to get some Memphis bbq but this experience was not up to par.

Yelp
I was really craving bbq so I checked on yelp and picked a spot at random. I got the two meat combination with brisket, pork ribs, baked beans and potato salad. The brisket was alright, the ribs were probably the driest ribs I've ever had. The beans were okay, seemed mostly like canned beans mixed with their bbq sauce. The potato salad was pretty good. The portions are decent. I wanted to eat there (they have a couple wooden tables) but they told me to leave after I got my food and that it was take out only. When I placed my order the guy who was taking my order was on his phone (I don't really care about that) but he seemed kind of annoyed while I was waiting for him to be ready to take my order. I don't think I'm gonna eat there again unless I'm in the area and want bbq

Lisa T.

Yelp
Saturday night we stopped at the neighborhood spot that always has great reviews. The customer service was great. We ordered a rib dinner and the beef links to go. I took one bite of the beef link and it was coming back up within 10 minutes. It was a horrible and painful feeling. This was our second chance at this location. The first time the meat was overcooked and dried out like jerky. It's definitely not a bbq joint that I'd recommend.
google avatar

Donna B.

Yelp
Since I love bbq pork ribs, gave JR's Barbeque a shot. Terribly disappointed. The ribs were generously covered in delicious sauce; however the ribs were obviously previously frozen and very dry. What they called a side roll were two slices of white bread. Seating is only two picnic tables outside, and no inside seating. Take a pass on JR's

Yelp
I catered an event of about 25-30 people with JR's Barbeque. Needless to say, the food was a hit. The chicken was juicy and tasty and honestly, my favorite thing was the potato salad. They worked with me on the menu and accommodated all of my needs. The platters in relation to the pricing was great. I'd definitely recommend JR's to anyone looking for a caterer.

Yelp
I ordered rib tips with baked beans , I want to substitute a side order for macaroni and cheese. The guy on the phone said I couldn't substitute so I ended up getting double baked beans and a side order of macaroni. I went to pick my food up and sat in my car the bbq has no smell too it so I instantly started to try it , I tried the macaroni and cheese it was NASTY no taste just taste like milk and cheese . Then I tried the ribs tips NASTY NO TASTE NO SMELL NO SEASONING JUS NASTY ! The only thing that was worth the drive was the bake beans !

Yelp
Was there 1 hour after open and Sweet tea slightly going sour, ribs were ok and brisket was dry. Also spices on ribs were bland. Now I have a high standard for BBQ as I grew up in the south and have a good idea what I should be getting. The sweet tea was properly sweet, but was either old or in a bad container or mixed with old tea. The ribs were the best part of the meal, they held a bite and were not too fall off the bone but bland, and the brisket was very dry. I have a feeling if you order a sandwich and it was smothered in sauce you would have no idea and it would be good but on its own it doesn't shine. I really wanted to like this place, charming spot nice staff but underwhelming meats. By no means am I saying this spot is bad, and I know sometimes you get a bad batch, but I was hoping for better. I would give them a shot as for LA spot they are pretty good.

Yelp
Food is delicious! I had the beef ribs with the mild sauce & they were very good. Their sauce comes in different levels of spiciness, I'm sure they're all good even though I prefer the mild.
