"Attached to Mellow Johnny's Bike Shop in the Warehouse District, Juan Pelota Cafe is a biking community hub — people wearing Lycra will often meet up there for a quick espresso before going for a ride. The coffee is from small, independent producers, and conveniently you can also get your bike fixed, because you have no idea what you’re doing when it comes to bicycle repair. It’s dog-friendly, and if you want to get some work done while you’re here, there are very solidly-built tables with built-in outlets., If you’re hungry there are smoothies, breakfast tacos from Veracruz All-Natural, and pastries from Quack's. Happy Hour starts every day at 3pm with discount wine and $2 beers." - Raphael Brion

Great place with extremely friendly and helpful service. The cafe is a small part of the bike shop. I got an iced oat milk matcha. It’s refreshing in the warm Austin weather. The shop does smell like rubber from the fresh bike tires, so I suggest drinking outside if you’re sensitive to smells.

Google
Definitely one of the most iconic places in whole Austin. A huge eclectic shop in a relatively quite corner of downtown. They make great hot & iced coffees, smoothies. No validation for parking so you either should pay premium rear parking or find a spot around. I’m not into biking but this is probably an oasis for those who are 🚲

Google
The most perfectly dialed in espresso I’ve found! They are meticulous and precise. Well balanced and smooth. Atmosphere was great and staff very friendly. Highly recommended going to this coffee specialist!

Google
The coffee shop is inside of a bike shop. A lot of Cyclists come get their fuel here after training. Came here after a run. The matcha was delicious. Nice outside seating. Staff was really nice and helpful.

This was such a cool place. Great people here and the energy within the bike shop work perfectly. We will definitely be back once in Austin again. Good coffee and good selections of snacks and tacos. Also we brought our dog here, who received a bunch of attention.

Google
This cafe is nestled inside a bike store and has a wide variety of drinks. I had a chai tea latte and scone in the morning and both were tasty. Everyone was friendly and there are plenty of places to work on a laptop both inside and outside. Wifi was great! Stayed past lunch and got a golden calf smoothie which was rich and creamy.

Google
Really tasty coffee. I had the Cortada and my husband had the cappacino. The cinnamon roll was amazing. Really kind staff and very friendly. Great quiet place to read or visit with people. Pop in down here

This is not only an iconic spot in Austin, but also they make great coffee and the service is excellent. I’ve never seen so many bikes in my life!

Yelp
The service here is always so nice, patient and personable. With all busyness surrounding the coffee so smartly located within this Mellow Johnny's bike shop, they stay focused on maki g good coffee and pretty tasty take away food. Plus, the refills are free for coffee drinkers that stick around, which is always a nice perk. The egg salad sandwich was pre-made and dubious considering it was sitting in their to-go fridge. But it was dang good and a generous serving, which sufficed for lunch! There's always seating with one power outlets, too. I believe I have found a solid spot to work and enjoy really good coffee.

Yelp
Pretty large pastry selection for a coffee shop in a bike shop. They even have a day old basket if you want some discounts. The coffee cake was my favorite and should not be missed. Walnut Coffee Cake: Wow, this was really great. Lots of cinnamon sugar crumble on top with walnuts mixed in for extra crunch. On top of a moist and buttery cake. So delicious that you don't even need coffee with this, though it definitely pairs well with coffee. Blueberry Danish: Also had a good amount of sweet crumbles on top for some reason. The blueberry filling was tasty, but I kinda wish it was more jam-y; felt a little dried out. The sweet dough was soft and delicious. Strawberry Doughnut: A generic unflavored doughnut that has a very slight strawberry glaze. It was tall with a small diameter, so the surface area to cover with glaze was minimized leading to a lot of unflavored doughnut bites. It would have been better if they used the same dough, but flattened it for a larger diameter. Cinnamon Roll: Was more like a round croissant that had some cinnamon swirls inside and then was covered in cream frosting. Nothing like those warm moist soft cinnamon rolls you might make at home. The flakey croissant-like pastry was good with coffee, but it just didn't feel very much like a cinnamon roll.

Yelp
Lovely cafe in the bike shop. Very friendly service make tasty bevs. I really liked my oatmilk chagaccino and my sister loved her latte (esp the cinnamon sprinkle mix try topped it with) .. bought some stickers and a snack bar. Good healthy selection and fun variety. If I'm out downtown, I'll go back again! :)

Yelp
This is another place I wanted to check out. It is a small coffee shop within a bicycle shop call Mellow Johnny. It is located downtown in Austin. I had a large hot latte. The service was good and quick. The coffee was good. There is indoor and outdoor seating with several tables and chairs. Parking is charged by the city with a Kiosk to purchase the parking ticket from beside the cafe. After drinking the coffee I looked around in Mellow Johnnys. They sell bikes, rent bikes and even store bikes. They also sell bicycle clothing and accessories. I enjoyed my browsing and will stop by again when I'm in the area. Thank you Juan Pelota for being in Austin and for being a good neighbor!

Tara C.

Yelp
Cheap prices but not great coffee. Ordered a caramel macchiato and got a caramel latte that doesn't taste like caramel.

Nic A.

Yelp
The 5 stars are for the chai! We were presently surprised to see the chai here is made fresh and not from a concentrate or powder. This alone has brought us back on multiple occasions.

Brandon Y.

Yelp
Really unique downtown/Seaholm-area coffeeshop that shares a space with Mellow Johnny's bike shop. Overall, the coffee beverages here are all really good; I generally go with the chagaccino, which is a standard latte with chaga mushrooms added (some sort of alleged superfood?). I tend to really like the earthy taste of the chaga mixed with the coffee notes in the drink. On the weekends, you'll often find local bikers hanging out here after their rides. Pretty chill vibes and friendly baristas.

Katie B.

Yelp
This building houses three or four businesses so for a long time I didn't realize one was a hip coffee shop! I've been twice and sadly they are always out of breakfast tacos, but they have some healthy grab-and-go options, as well as a healthy looking pastry case. The staff is super friendly and the lattes are latte-y. Always bustling from bike riders ending or starting a ride here (it's also a bike shop), the office set from surrounding buildings, and then some stragglers looking for WiFi and a cup of joe. Lots of indoor and outdoor seating to accommodate everyone! They have a punch card to reward frequent visitors, which is a plus.

Li W.

Yelp
Really cute cafe with bike shop attached next door. Great vibes, and lots of seating as well as outside seating. I got the Dragon Blood smoothie that had blueberry, pineapple and oat milk. Pretty simple but a really nice combination. Love the outdoor seating. Wifi didn't work for me, but didn't need it so five stars still;)

Daniel Z.

Yelp
I always loved the idea of a bike shop + coffee shop. Like "Strictly Bicycles" on 9W in New Jersey that I used to stop by during my rides. I'm so glad I found Juan Pelota! The coffee was great, and the staff welcomed my dog, and even complimented him. Would love to do some bike gear shopping on my next visit.

Kim P.

Yelp
Its inside the Mellow Johnny's bike shop. There isn't really great seating if you wanna get something and hang out. But you can walk around the shop and there is some space outside to chill. Its a great spot to go for friendly service and good coffee!!

Demi T.

Yelp
Disappointed in the bland latte I received. I wanted a simple Hazelnut Latte, but what I got tasted like a cup of steamed milk. The espresso flavor wasn't quite there, and the hazelnut flavor was non-existent. I know that hazelnut lattes aren't meant to be sweet like caramel or vanilla ones, but this was not that. Eh, it was just not good. Maybe my experience would be better if I ordered something different. Also, the barista/cashier was not that friendly. Her face and tone was very unenthusiastic. She didn't have an attitude or anything, but the overall mood from the coffeeshop was just very bland, like my latte. Wouldn't recommend anyone to come here, not even for a quick coffee run.

Saswati P.

Yelp
One of my favourite coffee places in downtown Austin. The fact that it's neighbors to a bicycle shop and share the same roof makes it even hippier. Both the times we were there, they used Coava roasters(Portland rocks!). Not sure if that's a staple, if it is, definitely my go-to!

Kaylee L.

Yelp
The staff on the service side was rude. I needed air in my scooter tire / needed to check it for holes and possibly put a new tire on (I brought the extra tire with me) and they immediately said no. Being a young woman in her 20s with little handy experience after a failed YouTube attempt I went here in hopes of gaining some knowledge or any form of enlightenment really and they just shut me down. Didn't even give me a business recommendation as to where I could possibly find some help. It was pretty upsetting. Especially for someone with absolutely no guidance thinking that she has landed in the right spot. Needless to say I won't ever go back, not even for a coffee.

Olivia R.

Yelp
It's a nice little place in an unexpected location with a large selection of breakfast snacks, tacos, coffees, and juice/milk. However, I don't find the cafe area attached active at all. The tables and chairs feel a little flimsy or as if they belong on a patio. It's fine, but I'd rather take my coffee to-go. Also, I came in around 7:30 am, and it was kinda busy, and it took maybe 20 min. to get my latte. If you're in a mild hurry, you might want to go somewhere else. What I had: - Latte: it was creamy and not too sweet. I liked it, but I think I prefer the latte at Merit's just a hair more (though, they got nothing on SummerMoon lattes). Meh, I'm not particularly interested in coming back.

Tom F.

Yelp
Best coffee and great place to write the foreword to my book. What a positive and cool vibe. Easy to find. Great employees. Like the attached bike store, and have always enjoyed Lance Armstrong's cool-vibe. The bike mechanic seems to think I need new-fat-tires-on-my-bike. Great place to hang for hipsters and nobody's like me.

Christina A.

Yelp
Who knew a great coffee shop was hiding in a bike shop? I found one in Juan Perlota. I got a delicious Latte after viewing the board discussing the espresso used and the notes after tasting. My nephew and niece got smoothies. We enjoyed both. I enjoyed the environment, but I'm not sure it was as relaxing as some coffee shops. If you are a bike enthusiast, this would be like heaven. But, I'm not, so it was a lot to take in sitting instead of peddling..

Amy D.

Yelp
Solid coffee, but it wasn't amazing enough to have to deal with the crowd from all the bicyclists during the weekend (it's too many people to have to keep dodging). They share the building with a bicycle shop (apparently co-owned by Lance Armstrong) and I believe it's an open concept so you can walk back and forth between the two places. We came in around 11:30am on a Saturday, and Juan Pelota was super crowded with almost all bicyclists. However, the line wasn't that long and it moved quickly, so I was able to get my Cold Brew ($4.50, http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=vyZ9UuJiQB6vjpWtp6DlZw&userid=76vIFZcC7owykCBjMfGVXg) in less than 10 minutes. The cold brew was smooth and tasted good, but it was on the pricier side. I would come back on a day that was more calm, but wouldn't go out of my way to be back.

Conrad F.

Yelp
How Austin is this place!! The fact that it's connected to a bike shop was kinda worrying when I got here but really makes the vibe something like a brewery. Their menu is pretty straightforward but the baristas are knowledgeable because my Cortado was done exceptionally. It had a nice crema to it with just a hint of milk, exactly like I'd do my own!

John S.

Yelp
This place looked nice from the outside but it definitely wasn't great as a coffee shop overall. The staff are pretty nice, but it's more a stop for the people coming in for the biking shop. Speaking of which, the smell of rubber from the bike shop makes enjoying your coffee a bit difficult. I also wasn't a big fan of the cinnamon roll since it broke apart much too easily for one to eat - is the glaze supposed to be crunchy? Also, not really a big deal to me but worth noting to some - wifi is a bit slow.

Cameron R.

Yelp
These people get it! The future, the past, THE PRESENT.........they have it all. Can't get enough of this hot hot brown brown.? Gotta be the best in town town....if not, money back... That's a guarantee! No better place in all city. Always BRING MONEY...sadly take no other forms of payment. But no better feeling than a rap sesh with jaun peloda himself! This based on real talk I had: "helo how ur day??" "well...it moneday...i have to say more??" "ha ha...i get it...what to drink?" Too Good! Bye bye,

Chalin S.

Yelp
This place is a comfy coffee shop attached to a store and offers basics for coffees and nibbles. They have outdoor and indoor seating and allow pets on the patio. It's a cool place to sit and work through emails or a quick coffee / catch up with a friend before heading out somewhere. Staff is friendly. They have breakfast Tacos, but I've definitely tasted better. I'd stick to their coffee and cookies.

Lara G.

Yelp
LOVE the vibe! Parking lot was a total plus, I love this part of Austin, and as a student trying to study, I enjoyed a little bit of people watching inbetween. I'm not a biker, but the shop itself was neat, a little rugged/industrial/open ceilings. My kombucha and drip coffee was as good as any other place I've had in town!

Heather F.

Yelp
The barista at Juan Pelota's asked me if this was my first time at Juan Pelota's and I had to admit yes. I also had to admit that when in this part of downtown I usually gravitate to Halcyon for my coffee fix. Luckily they weren't offended and even told me that they concur that Halcyon has great coffee. Though theirs is better. And better is probably accurate. As others have noted Juan Pelota brews Stumptown coffee out of Portland which is pretty rad. Not only that but on my visit they were specifically brewing Stumptown's Hair Bender blend which is my favorite. I had my coffee at 6PM and couldn't get off to sleep until 3AM. It does the trick which is what makes caffeine the #1 most consumed drug in the entire world. Note that a regular sized iced latte will set you back (including tip, and you should definitely tip) around $5. This is higher than most coffee drinks downtown, even with the downtown premium built in. But I promise it will be worth it. As Kelly S noted since this place shares the building with Mellow Johnny's it is Guy Central. As in very cute, very athletic guy central. The 2 hours that I hung out there working on my laptop I discovered that I was the only female in the entire joint including both those who hung out inside and grabbed their coffee to go. They close at 7PM during the week and 5PM on weekends so not a good late night coffee spot. But during the day when in this part of downtown I will definitely be making more coffee stops here for some of that lovely Stumptown coffee.

Elias S.

Yelp
The Chai is REAL! Spicy like it should be and drinkable! Try it out. I had the large hot Chai and loved it. Definitely recommend it.

Ross P.

Yelp
These people are assholes. Plain and simple. Every time we come in here they have a strange sort of simmering anger at their customers. And its impossible not to nice that if you dont have pink hair and metal in your face like they do that youre extra worthy of their rudeness because...who knows why. My friend had a hair in his coffee last time too. Nope nope nope. Move back to California if you want to be rude pieces of shit to people because they dare to give you money for your goods and services.

Adrian S.

Yelp
We came in for some coffee after visiting the farmers market and ordered 3 drinks as a group. We sit down and wait for our drinks which trickled out one at a time over about 10 minutes. Maybe this is an isolated incident but this coffee shop needs a better process. Upon picking up my last drink, I tried to make this suggestion to the barista at the counter who immediately became irritated and ill tempered. To think - someone might want to tell you when there's a problem with the way you're serving your customer. I wouldn't tip this staff at all for this type of customer service. Time to have a staff meeting at the Juan Pelota Cafe.

Alex L.

Yelp
Juan Pelota is inside of Lance Armstrong's bike shop, Mellow Johnny's. Whether you like Lance or not, the coffee is good and baristas can make a nice latte. The building is huge providing adequate space for coffee drinkers and cyclists alike. You might think the combo of biking and coffee would compromise on the quality of one or the other, but MJs is a great bike shop providing on hand maintenance and plenty of biking gear. Juan Pelota is again, a great shop nestled in downtown without the usual crowd of a typical stand alone coffee shop.

Paul S.

Yelp
Love their coffee and the bike store attached has a lot of inspiring work out accessories. For example I had an Americans with extra shot then bought some mild compression riding socks! Love the combination of good coffee, canine, and a fitness/bike store. The baristas are friendly if a bit shy and the seating area is pleasant enough. On a nice day one could enjoy the outdoor seating.

Sal R.

Yelp
What's with the jackass baristas here? I asked a guy the other day to tell me the price of a Pour Over. His response? "A f*ck ton. Want me to make you one?". This 'service with a scowl' attitude isn't as endearing as I think they hope it would be.

Josiah C.

Yelp
Great little spot, although the "coffee" aspect seems to be lacking. It's more of a cafe inside a bike shop. The cycling shop is extensive, in fairness. My americano was bland, unfortunately. 6/10

Sebastien V.

Yelp
This is a chill cafe downtown with a nice outdoor area. Great place to duck in between meetings or even have a less formal one on the little patio. Relatively cheap stuff and attached to a bike shop if you need anything. I like this place. They have taco deli tacos for breakfast and some good hot teas. Good place to work or write.

Shahriar S.

Yelp
I've been to this place a lot & the atmosphere, the great coffee & the friendly staff always made it amazing. The tacos in the morning are great. The coffee has been always spot on, until last time I was there. I got a large latte & it tasted horrible. I asked the guy making the coffee if what I got was a latte or he gave me the wrong order because it doesn't taste like it. He was very rude about it & when I asked if I can get more coffee in it he said "well, next time just order a smaller latte or pay for an extra shot". Over 2-3 years of going to that coffee shop, I've never seen anyone being so rude & condescending. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt & updating my review the next time I'm there.

Joe K.

Yelp
Solid espresso drinks and friendly service. Consistently and good. Our favorite coffee spot on this side of downtown.

Allan L.

Yelp
After reading the reviews on here, thought I'd check this place out since I was staying in town for a few days. When I arrived (in the afternoon on a weekday), I was looking at their menu options. I was told they didn't really have any snacks other than cheesecake or something (I thought I read about breakfast tacos, but figured they aren't all-day options). I ended up getting a berry smoothie, which was fine, but probably a little more overpriced than what it's worth. Vibe is nice. There is shared parking with a bike shop. The main downside is the service. My barista seemed to not give a **** about service.

Bruno H.

Yelp
Nice coffee and awesome shop to find whatever you want for your bike and for your bike trips! Great place to work with a computer while drinking a good coffee.

Thomas H.

Yelp
Quality coffee, breakfast tacos, friendly staff. You couldn't ask for much more...except maybe better parking....

Isabela F.

Yelp
A great place to work and enjoy good coffee. The people that work there are very friendly. Besides that, there is a amazing bike shop, with a lot of differents products. Good wifi and music too!

Colin D.

Yelp
This is a chill coffee shop located inside--well really just occupying the same space as--a high-end bike shop. The combination of some nice tables, really good espresso and the somewhat funky feeling of being in a shared space with the bike shop just sort of works. It makes the place feel different and homey while still a bit edgy. They also have nice outdoor seating and free wifi which makes it an overall win.

Kelvin P.

Yelp
I had them heat up a cream cheese pastry in the toaster oven and it was the best pastry I had all week. A bit on the expensive side at $4. The coffee comes in large mugs which is good for those of us who don't care for getting up to do refills often. I love the atmosphere with it being integrated with the bike shop. Service was really good.

Sandy T.

Yelp
Was gonna come in and grab something to eat since they were open on 4th of July. I walked in and went straight to the pastries and saw flies all over a scone. I left right after I saw that.

Christopher W.

Yelp
It's okay. What a nice idea of a bike and coffee shop. However, if you're going to walk by and see if I'm actually a customer or just using wi-fi say " Hello ". Too obvious..

Tracey S.

Yelp
Most of the patrons at this coffeeshop are athletic-looking and dressed in serious cycling gear, making me feel like a couch potato the moment I walked in. It shares a building with Mellow Johnny's, a high-end bicycle store. I got the cold mocha on a warm summer day and it was pretty good. The barista was nice, smiley, and unpretentious. The drinks are fairly-priced. The cold mocha was $4 pre-tax. You pay on an iPad. There is a neat conference table shaped like a tree. There are comfortable chairs near electrical outlets. There is free Wifi. I like the tall windows letting in lots of natural light. There is lots of covered outdoor seating. I'd be there if the sun wasn't shining on it. The background music playing right now is some bluegrass banjo country stuff. I don't like it. Juan Pelota is located on the Northwest quadrant of the 4th and Nueces intersection.

Marshall J.

Yelp
Once you get past the sophomoric name and the bike-bro trappings, you're left with pretty much everything you want from a coffee shop: comfortable seating (inside and out), friendly baristas, reliable WiFi and good coffee. They even have their own (free) parking lot, which is pretty much unheard of downtown these days. Watch out for those early closing times, though. This is definitely not a night spot.

Claire J.

Yelp
One of the best! Great coffee, great service and phenomenal wifi. If you come on a good day expect some eye candy from the attached bike shop. You can go across the street and get sandwiches from royal blue grocery so this is practically my new office. Not a ton of outlets, but a pretty good number for the open space, garage atmosphere. Oh and did I mention they have a parking lot in downtown Austin? Stellar. You'll find tons of Austinites coming in for meetings during the day. This place pulls a good crowd of intelligent, nice, interested people from the downtown offices. Very casual business meetings. Love the service here, always super friendly and nice.

Jess B.

Yelp
I stumbled into this little gem based off of its convenient location, to where I was posted last Saturday. Oh-em-g in love. The service was so incredibly nice. The selection was mind blowing. very much looking forward to my next trip. Suffice it to say....I'd go out of my way to return just for the friendly workers. Thank you! Definitely left with a big smile on my face, and some delicious Kombucha.

Brent A.

Yelp
Adjoined to a bike shop, makes an interesting lay out for this cafe. The location is a far walk from work, so I won't be able to visit as frequent as I would like. I typically order a coffee from somewhere at lunch, but this actually one of the better ones in the area. I ordered an Americano (start looking at my posts and you will see that is typically what I order everywhere) in a 12 oz cup. The flavor and strength was perfect!

Lucila G.

Yelp
Friendly and fast customer service. Excellent coffee, had the 8oz latte which comes with 2 shots!

Rob S.

Yelp
Cappuccino was good, but half/half was low. Also, whole concept is weird.. coffee in a bike shop? And still not sure who Juan Pelota is? But I got coffee in quick order, so no complaints about that.
