Funky New Bar Honors the Chinese Immigrant Who Taught James Beard How to Cook | Eater Austin

"Supposed to be fun, this Pearl bar leans hard into “funky”: a 4-foot chicken foot disco “ball” with a jade bracelet dangles from the ceiling, boozy and zero-proof cocktails mingle with two karaoke rooms and a Chinese divination machine, and homages to the Chinese-American immigrant Jue Let and to James Beard appear throughout, from a Mint Jue Let to a copy of John Birdsall’s biography upstairs. Chef-owner Jennifer Hwa Dobbertin—the three-time James Beard Award semifinalist behind Best Quality Daughter—opens the two-floor, 2,500-square-foot space at the Pearl in San Antonio on November 22, catty-corner from Hotel Emma in the former Blue Box, with designer-artist Jennifer Ling Datchuk and architect Grace Boudewyns shaping warm, intimate rooms and San Diego artist Lina Shamoon creating that disco chicken foot. Cocktail veteran Lis Forsyth’s menu spans tea-forward drinks and martinis to the aromatic gin-and–pine needle Mythical Beast, the Divine Intervention (served with a small surprise to enjoy with the divination machine), and the Taipei Personality—a revived Best Quality Daughter favorite with scotch, schoenauer Appel, chrysanthemum syrup, and lemon juice that Forsyth calls “a forever cocktail”; Dobbertin keeps a long list of cheeky names. Chef de cuisine Alan Dale Nelson aims for food that sits “somewhere in between a dive bar and a cocktail lounge,” with a months-in-the-making baozone and a Crab Louie onigiri nodding to one of Beard’s favorite salads, plus an $8 “For the Pals” section with playful “Shift Erasers” like “Crying in the Walk-In” and “I Need an Adult.” During preview night, guests called it “the most beautiful bar” and buzzed about the karaoke rooms—exactly the kind of fun Dobbertin says the world needs more of." - Kat Stinson

The Best New Restaurants to Try This Fall | Bon Appétit

"Chef-owner Jennifer Hwa Dobbertin’s cocktail bar in San Antonio’s Pearl complex honors a Chinese chef who mentored James Beard’s family and centers drinks (from no-proof to spirit-forward and tea-focused martinis) alongside cocktail-friendly fare like a grilled baozone (half bao, half calzone) and a crab louie onigiri, with private party rooms that double as karaoke rooms." - ByKate Kassin

Went on opening night and the service, atmosphere, food, and cocktails were all phenomenal! Sat at bar and was very well attended to by all the staff. The drinks were sorted on the menu by strength and every one I had was delicious. I especially recommend grabbing a God Loves Figs cocktail and the Crab Louie Onigiri!

Wonderful little bar. Both cocktail waitresses and bartenders are very friendly. The interior design motifs and ambiance are gorgeous. The cocktails are a little pricey, be prepared to spend $15-18 for just one, but they are very obviously well thought-out —and of course, delicious. I can’t wait to come back and try some food as well.

Jue Let is one of the most unique and beautiful bars I’ve been to in San Antonio. The space is gorgeous and feels thoughtfully designed. Everywhere you look is its own little vignette, even the bathrooms and karaoke rooms. The drinks are super creative and delicious, with fun names, and the snacks are just as playful. The staff is friendly and welcoming. If you’re looking for a bar that’s both fun and totally original, Jue Let is absolutely worth a visit.

Stunning and artfully designed cocktail bar at The Pearl, open until 2am everyday which is exactly what the neighborhood needed! There are small plates offered as well--we tried the shrimp cocktail, pepperoni baozone, and French onion dip which is by far the best I've ever had. The bartenders are friendly and knowledgeable, the playlist was on point and they even have a couple private karaoke rooms if that's your thing. The cocktail list is by far the best in the city (their insane clam chowder martini was my fave) and this much-anticipated bar definitely lives up to the hype.

Wonderful cocktail bar from the owner of Best Quality Daughter. Handcrafted unique and special cocktails made with attention to detail. Fabulous space with great attention to detail. Check out the downstairs bathroom. Upstairs is a cozy bar and beautiful karaoke room.

Jue Let is such a gorgeous space with every detail thoughtfully designed and created by local artists. The drinks are delicious and so intentionally crafted and it’s worth spending time reading every clever name on the menu. I loved the drink entitled God Loves Figs and the Mint Jue Let which had perfectly crunchy ice and the most fragrant jasmine blossom and sprig of mint. Everyone in my group enjoyed the snacks too, like the Fancy Shrimp Cocktail which WAS very fancy and tasty, Grandma’s Chex Mix which had the best combo of flavors I didn’t know I needed, and the Cease and Desist which is your lucky chance to taste Chef and Owner Jennifer Dobbertin’s beautiful Thai-inspired reimagination of the Cr*nchwrap Supreme, with perfectly crunchy noodles and my favorite Khao Soi Chicken Curry, complete with pickled greens, all lovingly wrapped in a warm hexagonal tortilla bed. On top of all of this, you and your friends can rent a private karaoke room to sing your hearts out. I was not ready for the perfect touch of beautifully curated decor and books that made these rooms feel familiar, comfortable, and complete, not to mention we had a blast. Jue Let is a dream I can’t wait to return to and I plan to do so very soon.
