Chinese Snack Shop Juewei Food Opens on Convoy | Eater San Diego

"A wonderland of Chinese snacks has opened in Kearny Mesa’s Convoy Pointe Plaza Shopping Center on Convoy Street; Pacific Coast Commercial helped owner Serena Wang secure a spot next to Bonchon Chicken. Wang, who’s lived in San Diego for several years, tells Eater that she was inspired to open the shop after missing the snack shops she used to frequent in her hometown of Dalian, China. Though it shares the same name as a mega-chain known throughout Asia, it’s not affiliated, and it is connected to a similar spot called Jue Wei Kitchen in LA County’s San Gabriel Valley. Displayed in refrigerated cases at the counter-service establishment, the offerings include duck heads, necks, gizzards, wings, and other duck parts that have been braised and seasoned with a mala spice featuring numbing-hot Sichuan peppercorns. The extensive menu ranges from pig ears and pork stomach to sliced lotus root, kelp knots, and quail eggs, with skewers of chicken tenders, beef, and sausage available in flavorings including five-spice, extra spicy, and sour and sweet. Other snacks include fried eggplant, stinky tofu in a chili sauce, and crispy squid. Although there are a few tables in the space, the shop is mostly geared toward takeout business, with much of the menu also available for delivery via the Hungry Panda app." - Candice Woo

We went here for lunch on a weekday and it was pretty empty. The girl who worked there was really nice and seems to be the only person there who speaks English. We ordered the skewer combo and added a few vegetable skewers too. I like how we could choose the flavors and spiciness level on each item. It's made to order so there was a little wait. We really enjoyed the food!

Google
Chinese street food in a sit down environment l, most people come to buy things like the smoked duck neck by the pound( which is amazing by the way)or some seasoned veggies. For me the star is the skewers any and everything is amazing chose between 5 spice spicy extra spicy or sweet and sour for each it doesn't matter they're all awesome. The staff is friendly and helpful everything is made to order BTW and it comes out hot and fast.

If you’re looking for authentic and delicious BBQ that transports you straight to the streets of China, this is the place to go! The moment I tasted the skewers, I was overwhelmed with a nostalgic feeling of being back home. The flavors are rich, perfectly seasoned, and cooked to perfection, with each bite more satisfying than the last. The spiral potato skewer had just the right crispiness and seasoning that melted in my mouth, while the meat skewers were tender, juicy, and bursting with flavor. The spice levels were on point—just enough heat to keep you coming back for more. Even the smaller dishes like quail eggs, chicken feet, and cold noodles were packed with bold, authentic flavors that reminded me of traditional Chinese street food. The service was outstanding, too. The staff were incredibly welcoming, making me feel at home with their warm and friendly demeanor. The atmosphere added to the experience, creating a truly unforgettable meal. If you’re craving a taste of China, don’t miss out on this gem. It’s an absolute must-visit!

The menu at this restaurant offers a wide variety of options, from classic fried chicken fillet to creative fried fresh milk. I tried the potato chips, fried squid skewer, and lamb skewers, and each one was a delightful surprise. The fried squid tentacles were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, perfectly seasoned. The roasted potato had an incredible aroma and texture, while the lamb skewers were juicy and flavorful, with a hint of cumin. Overall, the flavors were authentic, and the prices were very reasonable. Highly recommended for fans of barbecue and snacks!

I saw this place just opened on eater. Apparently they opened last Friday on Nov 8. It's a small shop next to bonchon with three tables. If you're getting anything friend, definitely eat it there so it doesn't get soggy. Minimum weight is half a pound for the cold dishes. If your order is over $30.00 and you pay in cash you get a free drink. My order: half a pound of pork ear Crispy squid - good amount spice Durian pie - durian wrapped in a thin noodle and deep fried. The taste is not super strong stinky tofu - made to order. Deep fried and covered in a sauce. I would come back for this again. Walovi cooling tea drink - reminds of grass jelly or winter melon tea. The chicken tender was also recommended, but we didn't order so we'll have to come back!

A nice place to have some fried skewers. The piece is not high and the food is super delicious. They also have food made from duck that deserves you to try.

This restaurant truly exceeded my expectations! Their spicy duck neck is perfectly seasoned, tender yet flavorful, with just the right amount of heat that keeps you coming back for more. The skewers are equally impressive—crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, with a wide variety of options to choose from, including both classic meats and unique veggie combinations. The service was outstanding—friendly, attentive, and efficient. Everything about this place, from the delicious food to the warm atmosphere, makes it a must-visit. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Decided to try this new Chinese skewer restaurant because it looked very interesting. Turns out it was very interesting! My son and I were a bit unsure as to what to try and how spicy it might be. The young lady working the counter came over and not only helped us through the menu, but she also gave us some samples of a couple of their unique items. The marinated duck and frozen shrimp. We ordered your typical beef, chicken, mushrooms, said (me), and loved every bite. We liked it so much that we ordered more...doubled the mushrooms because they were amazing. It was so good that my son has since returned with his wife to introduce her to the yummy food! Thank you for a fun experience. Please get a few more tables indide.

Yelp
Food: A place to try, if you are feeling adventurous - not your typical cuts of meat. At the register, you will see a fridge of cold dishes, from duck neck/head/wings to marinated pig ears to cooked organs. They sell the duck pieces in a combo and the other options by weight. A similar fridge with prepackaged cuts is also present if you are in a rush but need your pig ear fix. Interesting, and something we'll try next time, as we like the cold cuts from Spicy Hut. We wanted hot food this time and ordered the highly recommended stinky tofu and a skewer combo (as opposed to choosing individually). They also have other fried options - fried squid, popcorn chicken, chicken soft bones - again something to try next time. Stinky Tofu: fried tofu soaking in a sour sauce. Hot, fresh, and an acquired taste and smell. Skewer Combo: 11 preselected skewers - 8 beef, 2 chicken fillet, 1 sausage - in a sweet five spice flavor, though they have 4 other flavors to choose from. Again, prepared after ordering so it came out fresh. The chicken was our favorite, as it absorbed the flavor well and was hearty. The sausage was good too. The beef was small portions, despite being 8 skewers. Why not save the planet and consolidate onto 3-4 sticks lol. Overall, filling snack for 1 person. Service: No frills, no nonsense, nobody to welcome or guide us through the menu. We ordered on the kiosk, then sat at one of three tables as we waited for our food. A worker came out with our food and two chopsticks. We saw maybe two workers who mainly stayed in the back, only coming out when they notice others come in, so it was difficult to get napkins (none laid out and have to ask for some off a paper towel roll - we were given two, one for each person eating oily/saucy food lol) Atmosphere: Sad to say, but it was a ghost town. We passed by Yintang, Eastern Dynasty, Spicy City, Liuyishou, all packed with happy eaters. We were the only ones dining in, but there were a few take out orders as we ate our food. Take out the move here? They keep the floors and tables clean though haha. Located in a small plaza with tight parking spots that you may have to fight for.

Yelp
A former optometry shop in the Convoy Pointe Plaza Shopping Center has been converted to this new Chinese snack shop. There were only a few tables inside Juewei Food for seating. It's best to order using the self-serve kiosk where there were photos of the menu offerings and take your food to go. The featured delicacy here was all parts of a braised duck (head, neck, organs, feet, wings). For those with adventurous palates, you could get pig ears, tripe, fried stinky tofu, and even crispy durian pie. The right menu screen had more mainstream items that were fried or grilled and then skewered. That was where I chose the Crispy Squid, Fish Tofu, and Skewer Combo for my order. The combo was made up of eight Beef Skewers, two Chicken Tenderloins, and one Wangzhongwang which was a Chinese ham sausage. You could select different types of spiciness to be sprinkled on the products. My pick was a sweet and sour blend. The pieces of fried squid were placed inside a cardboard cup that was only partially filled. Either the vessel size needed to be reduced or the amount of food should have been increased to make the cup completely full. The crispiness of the batter was alright. The two pieces of chicken were my favorite because the glaze paired well with the grilled white meat. The beef and sausage were pretty ordinary. There are several businesses in the area now that sell skewered snack items. What Juewei Food does is fill a niche with its more exotic offerings that were on refrigerated display at the service counter. For the food that I sampled, I gave a four star rating for the price, quality, and quantity.

Yelp
I tried this JUEWEI FOOD on my way home. If you are familiar with Bonchon and Jeong Wong in Convoy , this JUEWEI is located in between the two restaurants. There's a lot of selection in the Glass Shelves but I'm not familiar with most of them so I went for the one for sure I know. I tried the SQUID SKEWER and BBQ SQUID TENTACLE. I selected the SWEET FIVE SPICE FLAVOR for my Squids. The Squid was not in the Shelves when I visited but it's listed on their Menu board; I ordered and it was cooked fast. It came out with a big container and a good-sized Squid in a skewer. Tasted it and the squid is very soft, not chewy at all and very tasty, nice flavor, it's on the sweet side with light spice. I just hope they label the food that is on the Glass shelf because someone who are not familiar with the food on the shelves like me and don't know what I'm looking at, but I'm familiar with some of them like Pig Ear or Duck head, the rest I don't know what I'm looking at and maybe with the label I can search it on my phone while waiting in Line. But all the flavor is the good and friendly staff, parking might be tough here on the weekends since there are a lot of restaurants around.

Yelp
We came late at night and there were not many customers. The place is clean and they have a self ordering station which is nice so you can scroll through the offerings and see the pictures. We ended up only ordering a popcorn chicken but WOW it was so good. Very crispy and flavorful. It doesn't quite taste like traditional boba shop popcorn chicken but I really enjoyed it. I want to come back and try other options soon! This place has my mouth watering!

Yelp
Congrats on the opening and welcome to Convoy! Juewei is the newest spot to get your grub on in the area. A friend sent over an article about this spot and since I've been craving for stinky tofu, I drove straight over. They've got plenty of offal treats (think duck head, pig ears, etc) and plenty of different spice levels. Vegans beware, you might be in for a visual treat. The stinky tofu is made to order! It had a perfect crisp to it and went well with their extra spicy ma-la sauce. The squid was also bomb and marinated just right. Come with an appetite and get your grub on!

Yelp
I bought one lbs of duck neck and they only gave me 0.91lb. Little shady. Not the right way to do business.

Yelp
Love the skewers here! This is my favorite skewer place in San Diego and I have tried them all. The flavor is on point, the chicken and beef skewers are so tender and large portion. The sticky tofu is so legit I don't know how they make it. The service (cashier) is so nice and friendly. I am so impressed by this place. Especially recommend it if you are from northeast China. It tastes like home.

Yelp
Wow! This place really caught me by surprise. I went in not expecting too much but the skewers and flavors were out of this world. I really enjoyed their fried chicken as well. For those who like stinky tofu, the flavors were perfect. It's fried and set in a spicy sauce. The people running the shop were super kind as well.
