On the Grid : Juliana's

"When you see a place with a line out the door, curiosity will undoubtably hit. Juliana's is a true treasure in DUMBO, and it has the history to prove it. The story goes something like this: The owner sold the Grimaldi name, but then later decided to open Juliana's (named after his mother) right next to the former restaurant he sold, which so happens to now be one of DUMBO's biggest tourist traps. Don't be fooled — skip the Grimaldi's line and get into Juliana's." - Column Five

The Best Kid-Friendly Restaurants in NYC | Eater NY

"This successor to next-door Grimaldi’s (still open, but not as good as it once was) keeps up the faith where coal-fired ovens are concerned, baking the pies to within an inch of their lives in a couple of minutes. Pizza is something both kids and their parents can agree on, the Juliana’s are real gourmet pies, the equal of any in Brooklyn, the pizza capital of the world. Fennel sausage and onion pies are a favorite. Good for all ages." - Melissa McCart

The Best Restaurants in Dumbo, Brooklyn | Eater NY

"Until L&B Spumoni Gardens opens in Dumbo, the area’s best place for pizza is Juliana’s. The restaurant from the legendary pizza maker Patsy Grimaldi opened next to his former Grimaldi’s, which he sold over a decade ago. Order the thin, Margherita-style pie, with bright tomato sauce and just the right amount of cheese. Competitor Grimaldi’s sits a few doors away, though the restaurant is now a national chain. Lines are to be expected at either location, so be prepared to wait." - Eater Staff

I had probably the best pasta dish I've ever had here. It was homemade pasta filled with pear and cheese in a creamy mushroom, truffle, and wine sauce. The dragon fruit cocktail was also very good. The atmosphere was nice and the staff were attentive but did not hover. We usually don't get dessert, but we figured that the food had been so good that we should try dessert. The Oreo cheesecake did not let us down. We will be back! You have to try the pasta flights on Wednesdays!

Google
So this was not planned, but somehow the weather was nice and we were hoping for the outside bar, certainly not disappointing. The Bartender, even she looked like she should be in school, she is absolute amazing...really she knows how to make great drinks, knows the menu and just a great bartender. The food is amazing and so are tge deserts you really visit, a great place you will enjoy and feel welcome.

Google
First time, great homemade pasta. All homemade sauces. Prices as expected. Service was fantastic. Seating outside was nice. However, sitting right next to the takeout door was kind of annoying without any separation.

Google
Juliana’s was a nice spot to grab dinner with family. Italian vibes and good food. We sat outside and while it was a bit hard to get the umbrellas to block the blaring sun we managed and had a nice meal. Thanks for the food and good service!

Google
Kathryn was the BEST service and gave us the special treatment. Got the Pasta flights and wow soooo good. The homemade pasta was melt in your mouth and plentiful. The birthday 🎂 girl that doesn't like Pesto was amazing. The Chef and wait staff were outstanding. Coming back in October hopefully for arichini. They let us set up decorations and the drinks were soooo good

Google
Large menu with lots of options. The chicken parmigiana with the vodka sauce was delicious. Friendly service.

Google
Nice place with a great patio! We had wings, mozzarella sticks and a Philly Stake Supreme Pizza. Everything was bomb. The pizza was great! I myself could only eat two pieces as there was a lot of stuff on it! Hood menu and drink menu.

Leah Dewalt

Google
Haven’t been here since 2022 but it’s still as great as I remember. We had the cheese garlic bread and the spinach ravioli. The garlic bread was an entire small french bread loaf and had plenty of or garlic and cheese. The Ravioli sauce was fresh and the filling was rich. Our waitress Lauren was very sweet and the other waitstaff seemed so as well. Great to be back.

Yelp
First time here. Ambience is good. Celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary. Service is slow but appetizers ( mild wings and brushcetta) were excellent. Waiting on the main course (Personal meatlover pizza and chicken fra diavolo).

Jason S.

Yelp
Juliana's is our go to place for dinner. We love the outdoor dining experience. The food is always hot and on point. The drinks are top notch and keep flowing. Thanks Frank, Juan and all the staff. Keep it up.

Yelp
We arrived on a busy Friday night around 5:30 and fortunately they had a few empty tables. My daughter enjoyed the spaghetti fra diavoli which comes with a salad and some warm bread. I enjoyed the chicken Parmesan and the warm rolls deserve a 2nd mention! Service was quick and friendly. It was a bit too chilly for me to eat outside, but the patio was set up cute.
google avatar

Yelp
The food here is absolutely delicious. On Wednesdays they have pasta flights, and they are phenomenal. Also, the outdoor area is so beautiful. I love coming here so much!

Yelp
First time here, saw the reviews so decided to come in. Margherita Pizza, Chicken & Broccoli Alfredo with linguine & a classic Caesar salad with chicken. Staff were friendly and it's a cute spot, parking & outdoor seating. Pizza was good but would've been better with a bit more sauce. The taste was great! So was the chicken Alfredo. Really came for the salad unfortunately was very basic. I was expecting a real Italian Caesar- fresh croutons with shaved Parmesan cheese, anchovies & real dressing. Sadly, it was just romaine, chicken, croutons & dressing that was bottled. I'll be back for evening dining to get the full effect & ambiance. I would definitely recommend this restaurant despite the salad.

Yelp
How did I not know about this place and I grew up in Reading!! If you love Italian food, this place is fantastic. The menu is extensive and lots of variety. The night I visited, they had live music and cute outdoor seating with an outdoor bar. Lots of parking. Can't wait to go back!!

Yelp
We have been hearing about this place for a while now and finally went . Wonderful food and excellent service. Thank you Frank for your hospitality. Been back since and going today for our anniversary.

Yelp
I had an unforgettable dining experience at Julianna's restaurant! From the moment we walked in, the ambiance was cozy and welcoming. The service was top-notch, and the staff was friendly and attentive. Now, onto the food - absolutely mouthwatering! The menu offered a fantastic variety, we chose dishes from the weekend specials, shrimp stuffed crab meat and the linguine vongole, It was a burst of flavors that left my taste buds dancing with joy. LOADED with seafood! The portions were generous, and the presentation was exquisite. Don't even get me started on the dessert - it was the perfect sweet ending to an incredible meal, we ended up ordering portions to take home! I can't wait to return to Julianna's. If you're looking for a restaurant for date night or friends gatherings, this is the place to be! #JuliannasRestaurant #FoodieHeaven

Yelp
Ordered carry out for the family, and it was ready earlier than anticipated. Service was great The meatballs and penne from the children's menu was perfect and a great portion size was very surprised to have the eggplant Parmesan sandwich. It was delicious! The bruschetta was loaded with tomatoes and to top it all off the tiramisu was to die for Cannot wait to go in and experience the ambience I've read about

Jill E.

Yelp
Very very disappointed. Appetizer was clams . Black sand spilling out of them. Terrible. Tried the chicken Marsala. Horrible. Chicken was tough seemed undercooked. Sauce tasted like canned gravy. Very disappointed. Had been there before loved it. Not anymore. Also remodeling. Smell inside of adhesive. Sickening instant headache. Will not be returning anytime soon

Los A.

Yelp
The Chicken Alfredo overall was VERY unflavored. The chicken tasted unseasoned. The service was great. She was very nice and professional. The setting was great, nice, welcoming. The tiramisu was very good, light and airy not too much of a coffee taste just right.

Martin R.

Yelp
Amazing food along with great service. We had the veal Marshall which was superb. Our waiter was very pleasant and surprised my wife with an unexpected birthday cake.

Timothy T.

Yelp
Service was the worst I ever saw. Messed up my order Salmon on Salad....they brought me shrimp. She said I messed up...I was with 6 people and they all heard me. Manager/Owner got involved after waiting 20 minutes and table was done eating. He said he'd look into it....did nothing and got offended when I said he and his restaurant was a joke. He then said I was a drunk and didn't know what I was ordering. He stood behind his body guard. Who has a body guard at an Italian restaurant. After seeing other reviews understand why. No sorry, food finally came out.........boxed and left. Never a single excuse from anyone....totally unprofessional. Many people at other tables saw and sympathized with us. Terrible attitude for an owner/manager.

Yelp
First of all, I would like to say "thanks" to Yelp friend, Mike F. who reviewed this restaurant, thus bringing it to my attention. We were here on a Friday night for an early dinner. Before heading out, we consulted Mapquest to get directions from our hotel. It wasn't difficult to find at all. Plus, they have a very visible sign so no worries about driving right past it. Upon entering, we were greeted and seated. Our server was prompt getting to us. Having looked at the menu online, we both knew what we wanted. I ordered one of Juliana's specialty dishes (such dishes have a "J" next to them on the menu), Lobster Ravioli. This dish is served with vodka sauce. All their pastas are homemade, except for their gluten-free ones. The raviolis were big and generously stuffed with lobster. Our server told us that there would be chunks of lobster in the sauce. My husband ordered "Nonna's Spaghetti with Homemade Meatballs". This dish is served with red sauce and has 4 meatballs in it. Each entree comes with a side salad. The choices were Caesar or garden salad. We both chose the garden salad which is served with a balsamic vinaigrette dressing. The salad is splendid in its simplicity and consists of finely chopped tomatoes, shredded mozzarella cheese and a curly lettuce. We really enjoyed it. We were pleasantly surprised to see that the bread that is served was far different than the usual Italian bread. What we got was "pizza bread" which, basically, was a piece of Sicilian style pizza, that was quite tasty. As for the main courses --- Both dishes arrived piping hot. My raviolis were generously stuffed with lobster. However, there were no lobster pieces in the vodka sauce---and that's a shame as it would have taken this dish up a notch. My husband liked the meatballs in his dish. He found the sauce to be too chunky for his taste. I asked him for a taste and found that basil was the dominant spice. I wish that we had room for dessert as they had some that sounded absolutely delicious. Other things to note --- they also have pizzas and subs on the menu. This is a very popular local spot. We didn't care for the parking situation as the lot in front of the place was on a somewhat steep hill which made backing out kind of tricky. Still, it's well worth a visit and we have no regrets about having tried it.

Yelp
The food & everything was fantastic & really delicious! I'm gonna come over again some other time! The Stromboli & the garlic bread & the drink & the service, was FANTASTIC! I give it a 1 million out of 1 million if I could! I love this place! - Alyssa

Yelp
OMG,... the original grandma pizza. Seriously,.. the best pizza we've ever had. Local, and will dine in during the week. The weekends can get a bit crowded however that says a lot for the service and the food. Can't go wrong!!! Love this place.

Ano M.

Yelp
yesterday, i got take out at juliana's and was waiting for it. As I walked out I saw a manager screamining at one of the servers leading her to hysterically cry. We love the food here but this is not the first time I have witnessed the guy at the counter be extremely disrespectful to his employees.
google avatar

Shar B.

Yelp
Julianne's is always a preferred place to go in the area for any Italian food. You will love the salads as well as the pasta dishes. The ravioli is very large and homemade!! Excellent excellent dishes. They get very busy so the service isn't as attentive as one would like. One way to greatly improve. This restaurant is if they served real crusty Italian bread!! Surprisingly they did not offer us any bread with our Italian meal!! that's a first for any good Italian restaurant. We'll go back and try some other items on the menu.
google avatar

Jenny G.

Yelp
I've tried Juliana's twice, take-out once and dine-in once. I LOVE the Pappardelle Alla Bolognese. However, all the other dishes I've tried (Antipasto Toscano, Chicken and Broccoli Alfredo, and Nonna's Spaghetti with Homemade Meatballs) have been lackluster.
google avatar

Mirenna M.

Yelp
Food was great! The service was a bit slow and chaotic but the food was worth it! I got the gnocchi soup and it was really good. The ambiance was very pretty!

Mary M.

Yelp
The food and service are fabulous. We love to eat outside; weather permitting. Always enjoy eating here.

Yelp
Juliana's has become a place to go for special occasions in my family. We have never had a bad meal here. Staff is very friendly and offer suggestions. My go-to meal is the Italian salad with the house dressing and pasta with vodka sauce. The restaurant deserves all the hype it is getting.

Terri G.

Yelp
Went to Juliana's previously, dinned in, food was great. Last night (Tuesday) called in an order for 2 Italian sandwiches around 8pm. Parking was limited! When I left, there was a large white SUV parked at the end that made it hard to pull out onto Fritztown Rd. When I got home we were so excited to try our sandwiches since our meals previously were so good. They were pretty disappointing! Two small thin slices of tomato per half sandwich, a sliver of lettuce & no onion! plenty of cheese and meat was good. Will not be picking up sandwiches anymore!
google avatar

Mike F.

Yelp
Italian comfort food at its finest. Juliana's is a bit pricier than other Italian restaurants in the area, so I waited for a special occasion - my birthday! And man, was it everything I could have hoped for. The haul was a pizza, clams oreganata, and a bunch of pasta dishes. If you've ever had clams casino, then you're gonna love Clams Mediterraneo. The difference being clams oreganata is served with more buttery scampi broth and subs chunks of smoky, salty pancetta for bacon. Really good if you have some bread to dip in the excess broth! I was super impressed with the grandma pizza. Gooey slabs of milky mozzarella dot the landscape of homemade sauce, which is then topped with slices of fresh tomatoes, blistered to perfection. The entire pie is then sprinkled with the perfect blend of Italian spices. All the pasta dishes were excellent. Personally, I splurged and went for Tagliatelle Scampi Meat - baby lobster meat (which I think is Langostino) in vodka sauce over fresh homemade tagliatelle. The "lobster" part definitely got my attention, but really I was more excited about the homemade tagliatelle. It's such a rare pasta option. All you ever see is spaghetti, rigatoni, penne, fettucine, and linguini. I've watched Hell's Kitchen religiously, and in virtually every season, they've served tagliatelle. That's their pasta of choice, and it's apparent why. It's a wide pasta, wider than fettuccine, and thus it creates more surface area for sauces to coat. Good for thin and thick sauces alike (but I guess mostly for thick, due to its smooth surface). Since my bday, I ordered again and got a few more pasta dishes (and the clams once again). The chicken piccata is outstanding. A lot of restaurants, I've found, skimp on the lemon and capers. To me, that's what gives the sauce life. It really just makes the flavors so much more vibrant. Juliana's doesn't hold back. Really potent sauce and an abundance of capers. Every bite is a flavor explosion. Juliana's definitely vaulted to the top of my list when it comes to made-from-scratch Italian cooking. There's clearly a lot of love put into each and every dish.
google avatar

Lauren D.

Yelp
I've seen mixed reviews on this restaurant so I had to give my review. The food is excellent. The homemade pasta is delicious. Not mushy - perfectly al dente. Wine is served with a generous pour, which is always a huge plus for me. The service could be better, which is why I knocked off a star. If you're looking for some Italian comfort food in the area give this place a shot.

Michael F.

Yelp
We ordered take out on Sunday 11/26/2023 evening around 5:15. My wife ordered Chicken Fingers and Fries. They were in a brown paper bag and we never thought to check them. When we got them home the fries were hardly cooked. (Soft soggy and cold). We only live 7 minutes away. The chicken fingers were totally black and hard as a rock. This is very distressing for us since we like to patronize local business. However, this was such a bad experience, we will not be patronizing Juliana's in the future and neither should you.
google avatar

Michele G.

Yelp
The food was amazing. It was extremely busy. The pizza was great, very New York style but my husband and I came home and both of us had...Shall we say abdominal issues can't say if it was because of the food or not. I'll definitely be back though .
google avatar

Julie J.

Yelp
Lettuce was filled with slimy bits of greens--very unpleasant. Ordered garlic bread but it was super saturated with paprika, and then those literal chunks of paprika were grilled. It tasted terrible (and it came well after our entrees). Pasta was WAY over-sauced snd the sauce was acidic. No Parmesan cheese was offered snd the over $20 pasta entrees did not even come with a slice of bread. NEVER again. Also, that $2.50 iced tea without a single refill was unacceptable. Just BAD all the way around, especially with the manager just wandering around and not asking a single customer how their meals were (he probably didn't want to hear the answer).

Jennifer S.

Yelp
When I drove by this place, I had a hard time believing what everyone was saying. It doesn't look like your typical restaurant from the road. I've eaten there a few times and the food is outstanding. The outside seating area is so inviting and cozy and I just absolutely love it. The service is good. I was actually surprised how busy this place was over the lunch hour. I like to see good quality restaurants with the business so hopefully they stick around for a while! If you're in the area, haven't tried it, or want to try something new, I highly recommend Juliana's.

Frank T.

Yelp
Our family have visited this restaurant on more than one occasion in our travels. Food is great and the service is stellar. If I had to give any negatives, it would be their online presence is horrible: 1) Any interaction can only be done through Facebook, which some of us don't care to use. 2) www.julianaitalianrestaurant.com does not work at all; just get the famous "error 404, site not found". 3) trying to find a menu on any travel site (yelp, tripadvisor, etc) is useless, when trying to plan a nice evening. Juliana's needs to tighten up their act.
google avatar

Kevin K.

Yelp
Staff is rude and abusive. My wife called to complain about an incorrect pick-up order. This was actually a replacement for a previous wrong order. Man on phone was dismissive and argumentative. When he was caught in a lie he became abusive and called my wife a " fucking bitch." Somebody needs a Dale Carnegie class or some anger management training. On a positive note, the food we did receive was okay- nothing stellar or better than any of the other Italian restaurants in the area, just okay.
google avatar

Joseph F.

Yelp
Ordered food from here through door dash- so I can't speak to the atmosphere or ambiance of the restaurant. But if it's anything like the dinner I received it is AMAZING! The food was still fresh and hot when it arrived, pasta was perfectly cooked and the sauce was absolutely delicious. Highly recommend!

Sue K.

Yelp
Food was delivered. Was the absolute worst chicken broccoli Alfredo I ever ate in my life! Totally flat, bland and tasteless. I added salt twice. Did not help. The so called sauce was like yellow oil or grease. And tasted like someone dumped campbells chicken noodle broth without salt on it. Salad was ok. Threw out the Mozzarella sticks. They were like stiff rubber inside. Couldnt even eat them! Tiramisu was the best part of the meal. Threw the rest of the entree away too. It just tasted sooo bad. Love Italian food and had never been to this restaurant. Never. Ever. Again.

Stephanie V.

Yelp
I'm only giving 4 stars because we had it delivered. The food is excellent and by far, the best Italian food we've had since moving to the area 3 years ago. Do yourself a favor and make sure to top off your meal with the tiramisu. It's delicious and actually made correctly. We'll definitely be dining in person soon.

Riley M.

Yelp
The food is great and the ambiance is fine. HOWEVER. the service is not very good. we waited 45 mins for a pizza and chicken parm. Our server skipped over our table so many times and wouldn't pick up dirty dishes. Usually they are good but tonight was 100% NOT!

Harold W.

Yelp
Excellent food and service--and great company. Our hosts were gracious and accommodating.
google avatar

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
Fresh, made in house daily, delicious pasta. Nice quiet atmosphere, with a spacious outdoor seating area. HIGHLY RECOMMEND tagliatelle scampi... amazing.

Daniel F.

Yelp
This was our first time at Juliana's for my step-daughters birthday. It was well worth the anticipation! From the warm welcome, to our incredible server to the FANTASTIC food and I do mean FANTASTIC!!! We will be back...soon!

Jim T.

Yelp
Beautiful place inside and out. True Italian restaurant everything fresh. No cheap ingredients here service is always good even with larger parties drinks are great with a great selection of specialties. Almost hate telling people about this place now because it's always busy. But worth the wait. outside dining is excellent with great summer atmosphere.

Andrea G.

Yelp
Updating my review solely based on customer service, which is very important to me. Called to get dinner for my family and was immediately placed on hold. Cool, no problem. But then the guy proceeds to ask for my order, has an attitude and repeatedly cuts me off as I'm placing my order. This happened several times as I wanted to add items to my order, he kept saying "anything else?" WHILE I was in the middle of my sentence! When I brought this to his attention that he was cutting me off, after the additional 2 times he put me on hold, instead of apologizing he then tries to put the blame on me! I quickly told him to cancel my order as I don't want to order from any establishment where it seems like me calling is an inconvenience. Never will I ever support this business. Sad because I absolutely love their chicken Alfredo. Customer service matters!

Caleb F.

Yelp
Got two large pizzas. One cheese one pepperoni. Amazing and a great price. The dough was just right and the pizza wasn't overly greasy. Will definitely be trying other pizzas and items from here!

LeAnn W.

Yelp
Not giving a rave review. I eat several nights a week at another Italian restaurant that beats this place by miles. Let's start with the tiny glass of wine for $10, at max a $15 bottle-=making about $100 on that bottle. Liked the Ceasar salad and the dressing that is what placed my review in the OK section. Ordered Chicken saltimbocca w angel hair pasta. Pasta was cooked to death but the sad part was there was absolutely zero sage taste to this dish. It was advertised in the menu as wrapped in prosciutto and sage. A slice of Prosciutto and zero sage and the sauce was oily, no flavor. Very disappointing to pay to take it home for the dog. Also took home a piece of tiramisu my rating on it would be a 1. Too bad I can't tell you where to find the best Italian food! Surely not here
google avatar

Jim C.

Yelp
I was excited to try this place when I saw that they make their own pasta. The pasta is good but that's where it ends. Tomato sauce is too sweet and the eggplant rollatini was fried and breaded - not the best way to make it. The tagliatelle alla Norcina was all cream with very little cheese. The key lime pie had a funky taste. The bar didn't have Campari (at an Italian restaurant?). On the good side service was excellent and the salad had good quality mixed greens.

Lindsay L.

Yelp
The tik tok pizza is SO DELICIOUS!!! I don't know why they don't advertise it more or at least put it on the menu! We just got lucky that a server suggested it to us! Best pizza we've ever had!!

Linda D.

Yelp
Lousy food n service. It took almost an hour just to get toss salads. Not full at all for lunch. I got an stromboli and it came out cold not even warm.I coukd hold the pan it came on in my bare hands. The sauce was cold and then i asked for something to take my sauce home and the waitress we had kept giving me these tiny little cups to take a big bowl of sauce home. Unreal. Other people around me said they are not returning there either. Yuck. Never. The mozzarella sticks tasted like dirty oil.

Amy E.

Yelp
I love this place -- great food, service is always pleasant and timely -- HOWEVER, management is extremely unprofessional and my most recent visit has turned me off to visiting here. This is the second time I have witnessed the manager being extremely nasty to one of the young waitresses. The tone and words used against his employees were extremely unprofessional and borderline harassment. This is something that should never be done to an employee let alone in front of customers (or at all) . Especially when these employees are very young girls. I enjoy eating here, but I recommend that the owner does something to change how management handles staff communication or they will have many more issues to worry about than just a customer complaint.

Deborah J B.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to eat. There veal can't be beat, and the homemade noodles are excellent. The deserts are all homemade and delicious. Service is good and prices are reasonable. Will continue to go back again and again.

Mary P.

Yelp
We had a family lunch at Juliana's and as usual the food, service and atmosphere did not disappoint. The flavor and food portions were above and beyond. We love going there because we are never disappointed.
google avatar

Dennis K.

Yelp
I'll be honest, never been here before so I searched some reviews online...there were some less than favorable recent reviews, but I knew I was trying here regardless. My experience was the complete opposite. Food was great...service was great...the pricing was great...and we will go back again!
