A Running List of New Restaurants That Opened in New York City, September 2021 | Eater NY

"Following a Park Slope opening last year, this Madison Avenue bakery presents freshly made pastries—croissants, macarons, and eclairs—alongside pre-packaged cookies, jams, and drinks, with plans for another UES outpost." - Emma Orlow

G. Daniela Galarza’s Grub Street Diet

"I have to run an errand on the Upper East Side, so I make a stop at Julien, a new-to-me bakery on 72nd and Third Avenue. They have croissant cubes, which I’ve been seeing more and more, and I’m tempted to get one, but I opt for a small apple tart instead. It’s got a thin slick of pastry cream under shingled apple slices. It’s great." - Alan Sytsma, Margalit Cutler

Google
A gem! This cafe offers high quality food! Highly recommend the egg and Gruyere cheese croissant, it's warm and absolutely delicious. The croissant is made with real butter with crispy crust and flaky inside. The service is super friendly but there should be more than one table inside! Madison location is closed down.

I wasn't just eating a pastry, I was eating luxury. This wasn't just a pastry, this was a pastry from the Heavens. It was a symbol of God's love. In life, you lose people, you lose things, but a pastry like this reminds you that there's still good in the world. The essence from the food here, it changed me. Haunted by these amazing delicacies, I will soon be returning.

Google
Overall, I like this cafe bakery and I have frequented it since it opened. I enjoy trying some new innovative pastries. I really liked their combo chocolate/hazelnut and almond croissant but they haven’t had it in a long time (on the days I’ve been there). I find their almond croissant too soggy, and their chocolate croissant unsatisfactory. Today (9/18) I tried to go buy some sandwiches around 11am and the doors were locked. No explanation. A few other potential customers also walked away disappointed.

Bevan S.

Google
A little off the tourist path which makes it perfect to grab a snack and cappuccino. All the pastries were nothing short of gourmet. Glad we made the effort to stop by.

Thomas E.

Google
Fantastic place to get the NYC morning set of coffee and croissant (or other baked goods, no judgement here). They were sold out of plains, but my god the almond croissant was divine! Great service too, love this place

Mehdi S

Google
The shop is small but the pastries are really good! They also sell chips with flavor not easy to find elsewhere and very frenchy!! (Such as Camembert flavor!)

Thibault A.

Google
Excellent croissants and baguette. However, the staff is extremely rude each time we go. For instance this morning again, we woke up to be there at the opening at 8 am to have a nice French breakfast. The doors were open. No greetings, the guy just said "we are not open as you can see..." no sorries..., and he couldn`t even give us a time where they would be able to serve. Unfortunately, because of the staff, we will stop going to Boulangerie Julien.

Google
The best service I’ve received in my short stay in NYC. The food is great. The coffee was perfect. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Their pastry dough is really really really good! The pistachio twist was insane to me. The apricot tart was really good as well just a little sweet on the apricot part but wouldn't stop me from getting another. Need to come back and try many things. Has a bunch of French snacks and cookies and treats to by as well which I appreciate. Coffee was good as well which is always a plus! Guy behind the counter was awesome and had good conversation! Need to come by and try this place if you haven't!

Yelp
I was on a walk up in the neighborhood and I became really thirsty because it was pretty hot outside. I came in because they had a nice-looking selection of soda cans. I walked up to the selection of sodas available and picked up a Diet Coke. I noticed that they also had pastries but that didn't fit in with my meal plan for the day, although they did smell really good. The employee was really nice, which I appreciated. However, I did notice that a can of Coke was close to four dollars! This was the only place that I had been to in the city that charged this much for only a can. A bottle of Coke in some places is only two or three dollars. This was less of the product for more money. That didn't make any sense! I'm sure if I came back for the pastries I would have had a better experience but this wasn't great. I told myself not to come back here but I ended up buying the coke anyway because I was too thirsty to pass it up.

Yelp
I recently visited Julien Bakery and was blown away by their exquisite pastries! The pain au chocolat was a perfect blend of textures, crispy on the outside and delightfully gooey on the inside. The mandarin flan was an absolute citrusy dream, with a buttery croissant shell filled with smooth mandarin pastry cream and topped with candied orange . The plies au chocolat was a standout, featuring layers of vanilla pastry cream and chocolate chips that were simply divine . Julien Bakery's attention to detail and use of high-quality ingredients really shine through in their offerings. This place is a must-visit for any pastry lover. Highly recommended! They are also very nice and helped me with what I needed. The cafe is very cute but it only has a small seating so it might already be taken.

Yelp
I wanted to go check out what the hype of square croissant in NyC was, here I was. I got the strawberry and the chocolate croissants. Maybe I made the mistake of not eating them right away as I was stuffed. I ate it after a few hours and thereby my rating of 4. Well, is that my mistake? I don't know, as I got a similar product that had a similar wait time and that tasted better. I enjoyed Almond Chocolate Hazelnut pastry, which is a twice baked chocolate filled with frangipane cream and hazelnut praline more than the croissant. This was recommended by the employee there.
google avatar

Yelp
Great Pastry shop near mount sinai hospitalI got the cinnamon twist and they were super nice and friendly. Really enjoyed it! It was flaky and soft in all the right places. Highly recommend. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
It just so happened by chance that I stumbled upon this little gem in search of some bites. Decided on the Turkey Croissant and a chai latte. The croissant was flaky and light, the turkey, cheese, & tomato were fresh. Overall the whole item was filling and tasty. I can't recall what cheese was used but it was goood!! I also tried their Nutella macaroon and it was fluffy good! The young man at the front desk was super nice and attentive, I only wished there were more space to dine in.

Ji L.

Yelp
Nothing to drive home about. I had the flan like pastry and chocolate croissant. Quick service.
google avatar

Angela S.

Yelp
I came here for the thing everyone comes here for. The cube croissant. And yknow? It was pretty good, but the cream to croissant ratio was off, as most of it was cream (however the cream was delicious). It was a shame since the croissant was just right - buttery, flakey. We also got the lemon tart and it was pretty good but nothing to write home about. Tart was high quality and the lemon curd was a little too sour, which is what we aim for. However, the service was really curt and I didn't feel welcome. The coffee was also mid, and I wouldn't get it again.
google avatar

Renee R.

Yelp
This bakery has a nice variety of sweets and treats. Good to go foods as well. On a busy corner of madison ave and 96th street. We got a chocolate eclair and chocolate croissant both were good.
google avatar

Kiley K.

Yelp
Their pastries are so perfectly flaky and loaded with decadence. I loved the cream inside the green pastry and think they would all pair excellently with coffee!
google avatar

George C.

Yelp
Came to the York Ave location to try the cube croissant, it was Mother's Day weekend so they were mostly sold out and got the last blueberry lemon meringue filling one, the fillings were very tangy and bit on the sweet side, the texture of the croissant wasn't as buttery or flaky as a normal croissant it was more dense like a bread texture guess that's how it holds the shape but it was still good dessert, service was great the sever was very nice and helpful, ambience is ok it has couple tables for sitting but a small seating area more like a take out place, need to come back to try the chocolate one

Lily S.

Yelp
I walked into Julien this afternoon and the very polite and respectful man behind the counter was dealing with a disgruntled customer. The cashier was incredibly understanding and kind (even after being berated by another customer) and quickly took my order. The sandwiches were excellent and the service was impeccable. Thanks!!

Yelp
Julien was a accidental find walking home from Central Park today. I was so happy it was in Yelp and had good reviews. The young lady employee was very nice. There's so many choices I was overwhelmed. I wanted something simple for lunch so I decided to buy a croissant and use my cheese and spinach. It was a good idea and very filling. There's other items I definitely want to try. I'm sure I'll stop by again walking home from the park. I build up an appetite! It's hard to get photos through the enclosed display case. I suggest you visit and get a good look at the delicious selections. I could probably get three meals out of their huge sandwich. Julien has reasonable prices too for fresh baked goods. Plus you get a discount if you pay cash!!
google avatar

Alisha B.

Yelp
You know why I had to come here, to see what the hype is about on the "famous" cube chocolate croissant. Unfortunately I left with a bit of disappointment and dissatisfaction. I came here at 5pm on a weekday. There was no wait, no customers inside. When I saw the cube croissants, I got excited to see they didn't sold out. I cut into it to see the filling but it was very hard to cut. I knew that moment it wasn't going to be good. It wasn't fresh, hard to eat. Filling was a good amount. I liked the filling. I think I need to try this place out again but early in the morning. The ambiance was pretty and clean. They gave me the croissant in a brown paper bag
google avatar

Marissa S.

Yelp
solid 4 stars. tried two sandwiches (turkey with brie and roast beef) and enjoyed both - bread was really fresh and delicious. portions of meat were not generous, but i guesss that's just french style. enjoyed the roast beef more. i'd definitely come back!

Agnes F.

Yelp
I've been coming here for their palmier, which is delicios. Today I tried the croque monsieur which was a poor choice. It was inedible, with cheese melted on top by microwave the rest tasted like stale bread with a sliver of ham and cheese.

Yelp
Spent the passed few days at Mount Sinai, it was time to eat but I needed to take a walk and get away for a while. Too much stress, too many people. I walked along Madison, and noticed Julien across the street. Decided that was the place and I'm so glad. Options were great, we ordered the ham and gruyere sandwich, 2 latte's and a few pastries. I wish I would've gotten his name, but the guy working there today was so friendly. Service was outstanding and he made a damn good coffee! The shop itself is very clean and has various French snacks and drinks. Enjoyed my experience so much that I would absolutely come back.
google avatar

Whitney D.

Yelp
As I was walking I came across this coffee shop. It looked clean and cute. And well being a Yelper I wanted to try somewhere new. So I stepped in and it was super clean which I liked and well organized. The guy who took my order was very nice. All the pastries looked delicious and it smelled great in there. I only got a decaf Iced Latte that, I was not to thrilled about. To me it had no taste to it what so ever. But I deff would try another drink out here.

Yelp
I've had this place bookmarked for awhile! So glad they opened a second location in the Upper Eastside! They've got everything from delicious pastries to French butters to macarons! The highlight for me was the pistachio twist and pumpkin tart! Also, I liked the strawberry madeleine with strawberry jam in the center. The almond croissant was just ok. I highly recommend getting a pastry or two and walk over to Central Park and enjoy the peaceful morning scene!
google avatar

Monica L.

Yelp
So glad having this new boulangerie at the UES! Finally a place with ham and cheese croissant!!! Although the lrice ia a bit high, i def pay it to satisfy my cravings! The croissant was excellent, super crunchy layers but soft in the inside with perfect ham and gruyere cheese baked in. Regular croissants were good as well everything looked super yum! They also have a few shelves with french/european things. Check it out!
google avatar

Nathaniel P.

Yelp
TLDR: great bakery, everything's good. Service is quick and friendly, what more can you ask for. I feel that this area of the UES has been needing a boulangerie and we finally have one! I first had Julien at Smorgasburg in Williamsburg and i was excited to know that they were opening a Manhattan location down the street. Everything I've had at Julien has been delicious: baguettes, various flavored or filled croissants, tarts and madeleines. I typically return for a plain croissant and I think my favorite tart has to be the peach and pistachio. I really enjoy their sandwiches as well. I prefer the butter, cornichon, salami, and cheese. I will say there is a lack of signage, but all of my questions were quickly answered by simple conversation with the friendly staff.
google avatar

Tom O.

Yelp
Everything is a delicious as it looks. Though I didn't try them personally, my family lives nearby and swears by their sandwiches and bread. I came for the cubed croissants that have been buzzing around social media. They did not disappoint. They are definitely pilgrimage worthy no matter from where you just travel to have them for yourselves. Can't wait to return and try their chocolate uncubed croissants.
google avatar

Thi D.

Yelp
Pricey but worth it, all pastries that we picked out (orange cube crossaint, pistastio roll, fruit tart) did not disappoint and were very delicious, would return if I was a local!
google avatar

Jessica J.

Yelp
I love that it's not stupidly crazy expensive and you still get quality macarons. They're not mini macarons. They are actually standard size with box. Such a nice gift to bring to parties!
google avatar

kristin c.

Yelp
Zucchini quiche is good, flaky crust, with bits of zucchini and tomato. It was light and fluffy, not salty at all so I was able to finish it. Better warmed though, which I had to ask the person at the counter to do bec I wasn't given the option if I wanted it warm or not. She was not very welcoming anyway. Iced americano is $6. ($1 was added to make into iced). Not on their posted beverage menu. Only 1 small table inside. There are 2 outside but water is dripping from above so couldn't sit there.
google avatar

Ofelia E.

Yelp
This place has a good variety of French desserts and pastries, overpriced in my opinion but yummy overall. The sandwiches are fine, nothing out of this world so I probably wouldn't order again. Lemon raspberry tart was runny but tasty. Would definitely go back to try more of their sweets.

James R.

Yelp
Decent bakery in UES. Avoid the coffee. * Pistachio cruffin: 2/5, beautiful appearance but with an over-abundance of off-tasting cream filling * Citrus Madeleine: 3/5, solid average madeleine * Crème Brûlée Madeleine: 4/5, better than the citrus due to added texture with sugar crust - could be ever better if sugar shell was crunchier * Iced Latte: 1/5, tastes like dirt honestly, better at Starbucks across the street
google avatar

Lawrence W.

Yelp
Best croissant I've had in nyc. I love Orwasher's, Breads, Michaeli and other big bakeries in the UES but Julien makes the best croissants. They're light, buttery and make a perfect pastry by themselves or with some eggs and cheese. Hope Julien stays up here as I know the competition is high! Go support!

Mike B.

Yelp
First the good Had the cinnamon croissant roll - very buttery with excellent cinnamon flavoring with hints of vanilla. Also had the fruit tart the fruit and filling were standard but the pastry shell again was very buttery-very good Now the not so good Was here on a relatively hot august day- no air conditioning-how can a bakery which serves custard filled pastries not have ac. Also very small inside-only 1 table that seats 2 people.limited selection of pastries --only had 5selections to choose between. Would give 2 1/2 stars
google avatar

Kate V.

Yelp
Love this place!!! I went for the first time and ordered a latte and almond croissant which were so good that I was back like two days later. I got the pistachio pastry the second time which was incredible. The staff were so kind and they sold all sorts of French items (snacks, drinks, etc.) Will definitely be back soon!
google avatar

Pasqual Paco T.

Yelp
We went in during the weekday morning and there was a short line. They had a large variety of baked pastries. We ordered one with chocolate and another with ham and cheese. They were delicious. Really buttery and crispy. The coffee was small and Just ok.. you can get better coffee across the street. But nothing beats their pastries.
google avatar

Pamela M.

Yelp
FYI the 74/York Ave location has 1 guy with bad attitude & service skills. The Madison Ave location is bunch better
google avatar

Sydney S.

Yelp
I tried their macarons- they were fine, but not great. Nothing exceptional. The Nutella was my favorite, and the raspberry, which is usually my go to flavor, had a kind of artificial tasting filling. The service was good, the worker was cheery. The ambiance was also nice. However, there was just notning special about these macarons. I would really rate this a 3.5, the .5 more for how much I liked the Nutella flavored macaron.

Adam E.

Yelp
Amazing bakery. I love their pastries and sandwiches. Best to buy the pastries early in the morning to get them when freshest.
google avatar

Julian G.

Yelp
The prices here require feeling indulgent but the pastries never disappoint. The almond croissant is my favorite but I love when they have seasonal items too.

Yelp
Prologue Julien is my new friend in the neighborhood. I recently came from Paris so I'm obsessed with boulangeries which is why I started looking for the perfect Parisian bakery in the city the minute I stepped out of the plane. Exposition: Place & Decor This boulangeries has a couple of locations in the city but I only tried the one at Madison Ave. It's just a counter with a nice view of the pastries they have but it's spacious enough to allocate a decent amount of people while waiting for your precious turn. It also has some French groceries and exquisites like cheese, marmalades, cookies and the like. Characters: Staff & Service The staff is pretty friendly, especially taking in consideration a customer like me which sometimes can feel like a pain in the ass, why? because I want exactly THAT croissant, not that one. Yeah, I'm a picky mofo. Action: Food What to tell you? just get anything, like A-N-Y-T-H-I-N-G. Everything (and anything) is top of the line. Croissants, pastries, macarons, etc. I especially loved their flan tart which reminded me of the ones I devoured in France and the amazing pasteis de nata from Portugal. It has a terrific fluffy flan flavor with real vanilla, plus that tartelette crust that makes it crunchy at the same time. Climax: Dessert To me, the pistacho twist is everything. Send from God, it's the perfect pairing of all the things I want: a croissant, custard cream, nuts and pistachio. It's all the right things: crusty and crunchy, with a soft and spongy textures inside filled with a lot! of pistachio custard cream and sprinkled with some pistachio nuts on top. The macarons are great and super fresh although I'm not a big fan of them in general. We got the Dulce de Leche one (obviously coming from an Argentinian), but the cookie was too fruity which didn't make the cut for me. It doesn't blend well with the DDL. It's a nice treat for the sweet tooth but I'm not crazy about them. Resolution: Experience This is my go-to French boulangerie (for) now. I'm in the hunt for more, but I'd certainly will get my French flan and pistachio twist from here. It's also super close to Central Park which makes it the perfect spot to get your picnic goodies: a baguette, some cheese, a croissant and some sweet delights, and off you go to a beautiful afternoon in the grass. Epilogue: Recommendation Did I tell you everything and anything is amazing? well, I would like to hear from you! tell me about it. The Food Novelist

Yelp
Kind of disappointing. First time I ordered a chocolate croissant everything flaked off. Second time I ordered with coffee the lady did not pack the coffee cups and their lids and the containers fell out of the bag and splashed all over the floor. So I have very nixed feelings about this place. Clearly a lot more thought needs to go into training of their employees, as well as the freshness of their baked breads and pastries.
google avatar

Tram N.

Yelp
Their chocolate flan is out of the word! Rich, fulfilling, not too sweet. Their lemon tart also tastes amazing!
google avatar

Annette C.

Yelp
Very cute bakery! I only tried the Parisian flan today but I definitely need to go back to try the others - especially the croissants! The Parisian flan was very delicious with the egg tart filling and flakey crust. Definitely recommend to check out if you are in the area!

Julie C.

Yelp
Truly one of the top croissants I've ever eaten -- better than many you might find in Paris or Montreal (another great destination for French pastry of all kinds). It's buttery and insanely flaky -- there must be a thousand layers of laminated dough in this one small pastry. It's also perfectly cooked through, no disappointing doughy center. The pain chocolat is fantastic as well. Everything here excels.
google avatar

Jing K.

Yelp
Not sure how the baked goods actually taste because the entire experience walking in here was off-putting and had me turning around and walking out after 2 minutes. No menus or prices listed so you have no idea what you are looking at or will be spending for a piece of pastry and a loaf of bread. Everything looked good but I shouldn't have to guess at what something costs or what it even is. This is the type of faux "create a fancy facade" we don't need more of. Maybe i'll try again when it changes.
google avatar

Rebecca W.

Yelp
This is my favorite UES bakery. The croissants are perfectly flaky and have a crisp shell. Tarts also retain a crispy flaky crust while the fillings are perfectly balanced. They also have a good variety of rotating specials
google avatar

Aaron P.

Yelp
Excellent. We happened upon their stall at the Smorgasberg event at Prospect Park and had the best fruit tart ever. Their crust is a sweet puff pastry, almost croissant like. When we found the location a few blocks from home... Heaven.
google avatar

Jasmin J.

Yelp
I just went and finally tried this place today, when I say DELICIOUS!!! I got a Madeleine and the Plies Au Chocolat and they were both the best thing I've eaten in a long time! The lady working at the counter was also very friendly!

Jacquelin J.

Yelp
My husband and I were walking home down York Ave from Karl Schurz Park and we happened upon Julien! Lucky for us. They were ready to close but I was able to get an almond croissant, mixed berry tart and a lemon tart. All were fabulous! I really like the flaky crust on the tarts. Nice and crispy. I will go to the ones on Third Ave and also Madison as we take long walks. I read a bit about the owner and when the article mentioned the owner having worked at Payard I knew the pastries would be top drawer! The staff was so pleasant even though they were about to start closing. I hope they expand and have seating at more locations. Many Thanks Jacquelin J

Carmen T.

Yelp
One of the best croissants in nyc according to french morning ! Made the list for the final competition! I hope they win because their croissants are definitely the best !

d e.

Yelp
Another accidental but great find. After I bought some pastries there, I learned that they have won awards for their croissants, and I know why,. The croissants are absolutely delicious, buttery and flaky, I can't wait to try their other pastries...The staff is very friendly and helpful. Bravo Julien !
google avatar

GarGuPi L.

Yelp
So glad to see an authentic French patisserie crossed pond...not from France, but from Brooklyn to Manhattan. This is such a blessing as a neighborhood patisserie, with a wealth of classic French pastries and some with a modern twist, keeping your palate engaging. The croissant base is used for different reedition, filled with Nutella or topped with almond showered with powder sugar. Or if you fancy something savory, go for their decadent mini quiche for a quick snack or croque Mousieur that you could eat without a plate. But don't leave without trying their fig tart, featuring sectioned figs cradling in a laminated shell. Quality comes with a price tag, but it's worth it for an occasional treat...or daily if you will. Another UES location is a coming, too.

JoHn K.

Yelp
The truth is the food we have tried was amazing. Everything looks beautiful and all is about $2.50 more than the already overpriced French NYC bakery prices. BUT the thing is it appears to be built on a lie#TLDR There is a sign in the UES location that is supposed to be cute and condescends to Americans that do not speak French. It says something about how the chef Julien was born in Paris and grew up there and then came to the US--As if he was a school boy writing it. There are two French grammatical errors: Je suis arrive au Etats-Unis instead of Je suis arrivé aux États-Unis. The accent and X are phonetic- so if this was supposed to look like a child's mistake, well a child would make a different one-- like Je suis arriver auz E-U or something, because one would hear the sounds. These are like things that you would learn in your first semester of French btw. So who made a sign and didn't even check on Google Translate? ? In any case, it's weird and insults me to have a sign trying to be French to impress me- oh wait that is PRETENTIOUS (the opposite of Julien's goal according to their website)! AND yeah the prices? Pretentious too, YET, the patisserie was delicious, but oui je parle français
