I walked passed this place many times on Broadway. This establishment has been here for years and always has great reviews. Today, I decided since it's Friday, not to cook and order take out food from this eatery.
I asked if they have octopus salad. She show me a small container and said yes, that it's this one. I looked at the opaque container and asked both persons behind the counter in Spanish it doesn't look like "ensalada de pulpo" (octopus salad). Both said it is. I asked how much and told it's $11.99. OK , so we're still in a pandemic and with the economic inflation problem we're having, I realized price went up for that small container. I ordered 2.
I also ordered moro (rice and black beans mixture, culinary known as Moors and Christian rice) and bacalao (vizcaino style that is basically stewed codfish). The octopus salad, rice and codfish cost $37.97.
All 3 dishes, are generically Cuban/Basque cuisine that I personally know how to prepare and cook to perfection, regardless if made at a Latin Caribbean eatery whether Dominican, Puerto Rican, Haiti or Cuban restaurant, the basic preparation of ingredients are the same. It can be tweaked but the dish concept is practically the same.
When I got home and open the container of octopus salad, noticed it is not octopus, but calamari. Calamari is NOT baby octopus. I tasted it and did not have that ceviche flavor that is known for octopus salad. It was very bland and disappointing.
I had to go old school, and add olive oil, white vinegar, fresh lime, oregano, basil, tomatoes, more chopped onion and most importantly, the Goya adobo seasoning to provide that authentic ceviche flavor that is known in octopus salad and noticeably missing. Only thing I didn't have available to add, was cilantro. OK so now I corrected the flavors to the existing calamari to have it taste like an authentic octopus salad. I had to redo the dish because they told me it was octopus salad, when it was not, in flavors nor ingredients. Although I have the ceviche flavors corrected, using calamari does not give it that gastronomic experience I was expecting.
The rice and bacalao were passable. As for the "octopus salad", it's very disappointing that the staff would incorrectly identify as such. As for revisiting this place to order food again.... It's a NO from me!!!!
