Opened in 1978 and still beloved, Jun’s anchors KC’s sushi story with a long counter, occasional omakase by request, and a tatami-style room. IN Kansas City has chronicled its legacy as a metro classic.

I have been coming here for over 32-years. Jun's js the benchmark for sushi in Kansas City. John and the team consistently deliver a fresh and delicious product. The staff is attentive and the available dining spaces range from the sushi bar, to traditional dining room seating, to tatami. They know their customers well and cater to their preferences. The longevity of this sushi restaurant in landlocked Kansas is a testament alone to the quality of the venue.

Google
Jun's is one of my go-to spots, and this visit was no exception. It was my third time here, and as always, it was fantastic. We had a party of 9, but with reservations, they seamlessly accommodated us. Our server was exceptional—no mistakes, quick with refills, friendly, and all-around great. The food, as usual, was a delight. From delicious sushi, both cooked and raw, to surprising traditional Japanese dishes like curry, Jun's has it all. They even went the extra mile with a generous birthday dessert for one of our party members. We always look forward to dining at Jun's.

Juns is a great place to dine at! We love to eat there for celebrations & sitting at the low tables is a great break from the ordinary! Very fresh sushi and a great experience!

Google
Absolutely a wonderful experience last night at Jun’s Authentic Japanese Restaurant. We went knowing that we wanted an Omakasa style meal. Meaning that the sushi chef curates the meal off of what is best that day. This experience starts at $50.00 per person and you can go up from there. Everything we had was fresh and flavorful. It was nice to not make a decision about what we wanted to eat and how much to order. The sneaky new favorite were the “sweet” rolls at the end of the meal. They were shrimp with a sweet coconut sauce, so different.

Google
We love sushi as a family, and Jun’s did not disappoint. The service was fast and the food was delicious and a reasonably priced they have options to order sushi by the piece, or combination, platters and boats. We saw numerous people getting the boats while we were there.

Google
Had immediate seating at the sushi bar for two around 5:30 pm on a Saturday. It really picks up at 6:00 pm. Great food and service as always. Beer always cold. One of the best sushi places in Kansas City I know of.

Google
I am a Jun's regular. I love the atmosphere, the people there, the owners and everything about having Jun's in my neighborhood. I enjoy grabbing something there on my own at the bar, I enjoy getting take-out and I particularly love the back-room tables and being there with my family or friends. It's been a go-to for myself and my family for many years for so many occasions.

Google
Wonderful summer meal! We trusted the chef to do what he wanted, and the results were incredible. Everyone was so nice--so glad they're up and running. Limited seating in these times, and alot of people ordering carryout. I'm a horrible photographer, but the dishes below were beautiful.

Yelp
Their Menu offers something for everyone, Awesome Happy Hour Monday-Thursday till 630pm. 3+ Distinct dining spaces. There are seats at the sushi bar, a regular bar area, dining room, then a more private area with semi-private tables. We arrived after happy hour was over, so we were able to get a table in the main dining room. We ordered Appetizers, Sushi, and Entrees. Service was good, and the food was delicious. The Hamachi Kama is grilled with the bones, so it does require a little work, but the flavor is delicious. Our Sushi arrived beautifully presented on a boat. I should have kept a menu so I remembered which rolls were which as they were not reviewed when delivered. When we ordered the sushi, we just filled out the paper and turned it in. When we ordered the appetizers and entrees the server did not touch pen to paper. My friend ordered the Chicken Teriyaki, which was good ( I was surprised he was not more adventurous... ) I ordered the Pork Curry. The Dinner entrees are a full experience with soup and salad included with rice served with the entree. In the future I will just order sushi as an appetizer, so I will hopefully have room to try Desert!

Yelp
We love the back room at Jun's to celebrate special occasions! It's always a great time and the food is fabulous every time. No pictures of apps but the calamari, edamame, crab Rangoon, and crispy egg rolls were great. We also started with a pitcher of warm saki which was very interesting! The BBQ Eel is rich and a favorite and the pork katsu and chicken and shrimp were excellent, too. We were happy with all of our sushi choices, they were so fresh and very balanced. Our server was over the top with great recommendations, perfect balance of checking in to make sure we had everything we needed. Absolutely one of the best places for an authentic experience. The place is always packed with regulars but it's pretty easy to get a reservation! Also easy for parking and getting in an out of the center where it's located.

Yelp
Came here on a busy Friday night but got seated immediately. Aaron did an excellent job being very attentive, friendly and providing fast service. Sushi is always fresh and has a good mix of flavors no matter what roll we pick. I Like that they have a cocktail menu so we can enjoy some beverages before our dinner.

Yelp
Been coming to Jun's for years and never disappoints. Good sushi can be hard to find in the KC area but Jun's always has fresh fish. We sat at the sushi bar, which I recommend since it's fun watching them prepare everything. We ordered several pieces of sashimi and a few of the rolls with raw fish, otherwise we gave dealers choice to Johnny one of the sushi chefs. We loved everything we had, with standouts being the Toro (fatty tuna), ebi shrimp, and the hamachi crudo. Johnny did excellent job surprising us with different dishes. Service is always good and sushi is prepared in timely manner. Definitely recommend for nice date night or just any time you are wanting to treat yourself to some sushi .

Yelp
This was a recommendation from a friend who used to live in Japan and they did not disappoint. This place is super cool! We got seated in the back where we took our shoes off to sit on the mats. There are other tables and bar seating that is also available. Overall service was excellent! They were quick and readily available when we needed something. They frequently checked in on us to make sure it all tasted good. We got the mushroom and mussel appetizers. The mushrooms were a little bland. But the mussels were delicious! They were chopped up and perfectly tender and seasoned. For the entrees, we got sashimi and a couple rolls. The fish tasted fresh and the rolls were nicely put together and everything went well with each other. This is definitely our new go to spot for sushi! I'm excited to try the other Japanese dishes as well.

Yelp
Great food, great service, and amazing environment. They have a tatami room which was nice to try. Their portions are very generous and the happy hour is great.

Yelp
It's been over a decade since I've reviewed Jun's, so I owe an update: still as good as ever. We took the kids here early on a Saturday evening and were lucky to snag a table in the back room; you take your shoes off and sit on pillows, and it's a completely different vibe than the rest of the space. The service and sushi were as prompt as ever, and between us an the kids, we tried: -Fried calamari -Edamame -Traditional sushi of salmon over rice, and tuna over rice -Spicy tuna roll -California roll -Some fancy roll I forget the name of but it was topped with crab, jalapenos and sriracha My oldest loves seafood, and couldn't quite get there with the sushi but was content with the apps. It's nice to know there are several cooked rolls and other things to order if they're not quite ready for entry into the world of raw fish. I thought everything was fantastic, with the traditional sushi and the fancy jalapeno topped roll being the standouts. The spicy tuna was the only one that somewhat missed the mark, as the texture wasn't my fav. I really couldn't believe how efficient things went during our visit, they were friendly and things flowed perfectly. We will definitely come back here for the vibes, and of course for what I think is some of the better sushi around KC.

Yelp
My husband and I came to this restaurant for a birthday celebration with his family. The decor of this restaurant is lovely, they have an area that is decorated in a traditional Japanese style which really sets the tone of the meal. We shared a multitude of appetizers that were all tasty (crab Rangoon, edamame, crab salad, fried tofu). I ordered the chirashi don and my husband ordered the sushi B platter. Both are chefs choice regarding the sushi/sashimi served. I appreciated the varied choices and portion size - mine came with tuna, salmon, two white fish, octopus, shrimp, eel, and egg. The miso soup that was served alongside it was flavorful and made with red miso. I did feel that the rice could have been a bit more seasoned for the maki my husband ordered, and prices for individual rolls were a bit high. Service was okay but we did have to wave our waiter down multiple times. Overall a nice experience with family.

Yelp
I have been waiting to try Jun's for a while now, since my friend that has grown up in KC says it is the best sushi in KC! When you walk in, you are greeted with a large restaurant (two sushi bars and a dining room) and a relaxing atmosphere, with low lighting and great servers. My friend ordered the udon noodles with beef and didn't love the beef but said the stir fry noodles were good. I had 3 rolls and a mango martini. I liked the martini and it was $10, which seemed normal. However, most of the rolls were $16 and I kind of felt like it was a little pricey because they were pretty on par with some other sushi places that have a wide range of prices. The edamame was also a little plain for me. Overall, I did enjoy it but I think it might be a little pricey.

Yelp
Went here with a friend because we were craving some sushi after our workout. It was so cute inside and we asked to get sat in the back where you take off your shoes and sit on a pillow. The sushi was pretty we got 4 rolls and the crab Rangoon was good as well. I recommend going if you are in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
The sushi bar is the place to be at Jun's! Friendly up close service where you get to watch the sushi chefs make gorgeous plates of edible art. Lots of good roll combinations, salty miso soup and ice cold Japanese beers. Saw some fried appetizers and cold mochi desserts come out that looked mighty tasty. Perfect spot for a date night!
google avatar

Jess N.

Yelp
Appetizers were great and came out pretty quick! Our server was super nice and helpful being our first time here. This place seemed very popular, we had to wait a bit before we got a seat so I recommend to call in ahead of time. Sushi seemed fresh and rice was cooked very well. There were different areas to be seated, we got a table but wish we were able to sit in the shoes-off sitting area!
google avatar

Yelp
Jun's is located in a strip in Prairie Village. In the back room, there is floor seating which can be a fun experience. The staff is friendly, however, the last time I came, it took over 30+ minutes to get our sushi while other tables around us who ordered after, were getting their food. Overall, their sushi is good. I've never been disappointed by the quality/taste.
google avatar

Kathy W.

Yelp
Went there to celebrate a birthday, arrived at 530 - THANK GOODNESS, half hour later the place was packed. I did not know they do a HH with food and drinks. It stayed quite busy the entire time we were there. Miso soup as always is the BEST, plain soup ordered by my companion is her fav. We got about 6 rolls standard ones all were great, but a new one and a stand out for me was the Pacific - 1st bite I was not sure but Darn it was the star. Great service and next time I want to sit in the back tables it looks like fun.

Yelp
I went to Jun's Authentic Japanese restaurant with some old college friends for happy hour and I was NOT disappointed. Their happy hour is Monday - Thursday from 4:30-6:30 and is crazy affordable. I love when Happy Hours end a little later because it is tricky getting to happy hour in time for most folks who work until 5pm. The sushi rolls are fresh and tasty. I highly recommend getting the crab rangoons and the gyoza. DELICIOUS! Yelp
Definitely my favorite sushi restaurant in the Kansas City area. I have been here several times now for sushi only, and I haven't been disappointed yet. The happy hour options are numerous and can't be missed! Jun's is the place I go to when I am craving sushi and want to eat a lot. The happy hour rolls range from $4-6 dollars and there are many options. You can easily find yourself picking 3 or 4 rolls that will really fill you up. They'll even put the rolls in a cool looking boat too! I would also highly recommend requesting the authentic Japanese style seating area if you have a larger group. My personal favorites would have to be the Vegas and Dynamite rolls. They are both packed full of ingredients and taste that will satisfy any sushi craving. If you are an eel fan like me, I would also highly recommend the simple Unagi roll..highly underrated. Overall you can't really beat the quantity of sushi you get for the price. Especially during happy hour. I will definitely be back.

Yelp
Beautiful food and why not add a decadent quail egg to your sushi? The portions are typical. The staff helpful and the back room allows for low tables and shoes off comfort with padded booths. Go with time to try many rolls, from raw to fried no complaints whatsoever for this place!
google avatar

Yelp
Wow the food is awesome!!! The service is a little abrupt (but it might just be cultural differences). One is left to guess why there is only 1 menu on the table and 1 order form as the hostess left immediately after showing us our table (there were 7 of us). Eventually someone came to take our drink orders and eventually our food orders. The ambiance seems authentic as we were in the back room for a party our size and shoes must be removed. Everyone finished all the food as it was too good not to. It felt like an authentic experience and we will be back.

Vivian I.

Yelp
GREAT unagi, my absolute favorite. Great crab Rangoons too, and they are always fast. Love the selection of individual sushi pieces so I can try a bunch without committing to a whole roll of what I might not like. Cute interior, feels very authentic. Service is always prompt and polite. Thoroughly recommend.
google avatar

Beth M.

Yelp
Love the atmosphere for a date night or dinner with a friend. Takeout is ready quickly and is always high quality. We order 4 rolls and an appetizer for two, perfect amount of food. The service is always great and friendly!
google avatar

Grace Y.

Yelp
I'm definitely coming back because their happy hour menu looks VERY promising. I have my eyes on the crab rangoon. Make sure to ask to sit at the traditional Japanese tables...  you get to sit criss-cross at the table with pillow seat cushions. You take off your shoes and everything, and they use Shoji Screens as dividers. It's a dining experience that transports you to Japan! As for food, I ordered the Chicken Hibachi for $14.50 and kind of regretted it. Not that it didn't taste good (because it definitely was tasty), but the higher price makes me wish I had waited to spend that money at an actual hibachi grill where they would actually cook your food in front of you. That was my own fault, but everyone else's orders looked amazing. Highly recommend this dining experience! *visited 4/23/21

Yelp
Definitely a hidden gem. My wife and I go to the sushi bar regularly and it never disappoints. The service is great, the people behind the bar in the waiters and waitresses are very friendly. It looks like a smaller storefront, but there is a nice big area for seating, as well as the sushi bar and regular bar. Great atmosphere, and we highly recommend, I believe the oldest sushi restaurant in the city
google avatar

Cheryl N.

Yelp
As good as ever! I only wish I had ordered more sushi! Even sushi newbies can find something wonderful. Will be a new regular mother & son dinner to go option. Hostess and what I believe to be owners were so welcoming. Well stocked bar while you wait. Best sushi in Kansas - even still. Thank goodness COVID didn't get them.
google avatar

Molly M.

Yelp
Sushi was fresh and delicious, affordable, especially at happy hour, there are such great deals. Service is always great.

Rick P.

Yelp
Wonderful people, the service was excellent and the food is amazing. I will be going back soon.
google avatar

Andrea R.

Yelp
The service is great! They are great with kids and gave my daughter kid friendly chopsticks. The drinks are really fun and interesting. The sushi is great! The restaurant itself has fun little trinkets to look at and buy. This place is great!
google avatar

Angela O.

Yelp
Having lived in Japan for 5 years, I am rather picky about my sushi in land locked Kansas City! However, Juns is as authentic as it gets! They have quality ingredients and you can tell with the first bite! We often go to Juns to celebrate and get the sushi boat which the kids love! They also have great appetizers like yaki tori, shrimp and vegetable tempura and the faithful edamame! The service is great whether it be in the tatami room, main dining area or sushi bar! The ambiance is true Japanese with the above said tatami room and the sushi bar- the only difference I would say is that it is much more spacious than eateries in Japan!
google avatar

Amanda H.

Yelp
I came here with a big party so we got to sit in a secluded area. The food was great and would definitely recommend getting sake as well. The waiter was extremely friendly and got everyone's order right, but didn't check up on my table as often as I was hoping. Overall it was a great experience.
google avatar

Blake W.

Yelp
Jun's is my bookmark to good sushi around town. We always get great service and it definitely has a fun atmosphere. Everything is reasonably priced for the quality of sushi you get. My wife loves wasabi but theirs is definitely not her favorite. Honestly better wasabi would probably kick them up to 5 stars in my book. Would pay extra for better wasabi. Definitely miss Bob Wasabi!
google avatar

Dominic W.

Yelp
We came here for a dinner celebration on Friday night and it was easy to get a seat Atmosphere: small tables in the general area, some hidden booths that can seat more. Casual, easy. Food: food actually tasted okay and their fish is relatively good. Here was my big problem: they are SO stingy on the amount of fish in the sushi rolls, and we had multiple (3+) pieces per roll of the smallest amount of fish I've seen in sushi rolls (refer to my pictures). Just awful - why bother rolling any fish in there at all?! We felt pretty cheated. Service: friendly, no complaints there. Overall, disappointing sushi rolls, but a convenient place. I wanted to like it more, but come on - give us more fish for what we are paying for and make the rolls more consistent!

Yelp
Located in an older strip mall area of Waldo, but do not let the outside visuals fool you, Jun's is WORTH IT. The decor sets a wonderful atmosphere and is really well designed. My wife and I LOVE their shoes-off sitting area in the back of the restaurant (see photo). We started with their Gyoza and Miso soup. Delish! I also cannot pass up some tasty hot sake and Sapporo. We ordered 4 rolls, the raw spicy tuna, scallops, dynamite, and tiger eye. All were excellently prepared and tasted fresh as can be. Oh! My wife also ordered a Mango Martini, and it was worth it! I love that Jun's is full of culture, great food, and the best service. And it is here in KCMO! You must visit Jun's for sushi when you are in KCMO!
google avatar

Brooke V.

Yelp
Open late!! Ordered tempura udon and crab Rangoon to go. Usually when you order food right before closing it tastes old, but this stuff was fresh! So fresh I burned my mouth when I bit into the crab Rangoon - oh but it was worth it. Delicious, good serving portions. Will definitely come back to dine in. They offer seating on the floor in true Japanese style. Don't let the outward appearance fool you - this place is legit!
google avatar

Claire F.

Yelp
This is a great sushi place! Came here over the summer with friends and have been wanting to come back ever since. I especially want to try their happy hour menu, their prices seem very decent and their quality is great. My friends and I ordered a bunch of sushi last time, and we were so pleased that we had to order a second round! We didn't have a reservation but were able to get seated pretty promptly given that it was a busy night there. Service was great, and the fish was very fresh.
google avatar

Kay L.

Yelp
I have gotten takeout from here a few times. I was craving tempura udon noodle soup one night and was excited that there was a restaurant so close by that had it. The tempura batter is crispy, the noodles are soft and chewy, and the soup is hot. I have also tried the stir fried udon noodles with shrimp before, which is pretty good, but not a big portion. My one complaint is that the last time I came here to pick up my order, I waited for 15 minutes at the front entrance before any staff members asked if I needed help. There was only one other customer waiting for their order, so it wasn't that busy. When someone finally helped me, my order had been ready and waiting at the front counter the whole time. I was kind of turned off by that experience, but will probably return in the future.
google avatar

Laci S.

Yelp
So good. Literally drive 30 minutes for this food. Sushi is fresh, service is amazing.
google avatar

Patrick D.

Yelp
We have eaten here several times. Jun's has consistently good and fresh fish, so important. The seaweed salad is crisp and very nice. One of the other quality details is the rice, always perfectly good with great texture, and packed tightly so the sushi never falls apart. I enjoy the fresh toro, hamachi, maguro, and salmon roe. The mochi ice cream is great for dessert. The service is fairly quick here, and friendly. Recommend the booths in the back of the restaurant, so nice for a bit of privacey.. For all of these reason's Jun's is one of our favorite restaurants in the KC metro area. Tip, we came here on Cinco de Mayo so it was less crowded than usual today.

Christopher M.

Yelp
Excited to try this place after reading so many positive reviews. The room in the back was nicely decorated with the sitting on the floor style tables, but the carpet and pillows could be washed. The area felt grimy and the table was sticky. The sushi was good overall. Got the Chiefs Roll and a couple raw fish rolls; we've had better deep fried rolls at other places. I guess people mostly come for the sushi though. The katsu and katsu curry were mediocre at best. And the hibachi steak was also mid. We couldn't drink the house sake. I don't drink much alcohol, but this was especially awful. If we come again, it's just for the sushi. And we'll sit in the main dining room. But I'm not sure we'll be back...
google avatar

Clint D.

Yelp
This is definitely my go-to sushi place when I'm wanting some decently priced high quality sushi. Not as expensive as many up scale restaurants and the flavors speak for themselves. A great place for a date night or for a family.
google avatar

Nina B.

Yelp
Grew up eating at this place. Sushi is such a good quality. Never disappointed. Been open forever and it shows. Definitely recommend this place if you love traditional sushi.
google avatar

Jessica T.

Yelp
I have seen this place for several months and always wondered what it was. Finally decided to try it out and was pleasantly surprised. To be totally honest, I thought it was going to be an average Asian restaurant in a strip mall. WRONG. It's a really tasty Japanese restaurant in a strip mall. We got miso soup, summer roll, gyoza and sushi. The miso was very flavorful. The summer rolls were small but good. The sushi was good but not special. I think what I loved absolutely most was the service. It was pretty packed but we were sat within 20 minutes. I adored our waitress, she was so kind and friendly, and really made me want to become a regular. They have a really great happy hour that will probably make that a reality.
google avatar

Felicia M.

Yelp
Definitely a great Japanese place to eat or celebrate a birthday! I love the authenticity of this place. I brought 14 year old here and she loved the sushi! The service was on fleek!
google avatar

Frank S.

Yelp
I had their two roll lunch special and it was tasty. I think it was two rolls for $9.00. It was quick and the service was exceptional

Joshua B.

Yelp
Love this place! Service is great and fish is better! Easily top 3 sushi in KC. Best in prairie village/mission area.
google avatar

Judi V.

Yelp
The best Asian restaurant in the city! I've been a customer of theirs since they were located on 103rd street! It has always been my go to restaurant for great food! You can't go wrong with anything on their menu!

leah n.

Yelp
Food was good, and like in the photos your sushi does come in a boat, the server was really fast and very helpful!
google avatar

Sophie A.

Yelp
Delicious sushi, tried several rolls and was impressed. Very busy and can get loud but staff was attentive and helpful. I'd recommend a reservation. Will be back!
google avatar

Abby P.

Yelp
Jun's was good. Truth be told, I didn't find it be anything special compared to several of the spots around town. But I am happy that there is a sushi place in that area because I had no clue! They had all the classics so that's certainly a plus. I just wasn't blown away. Our waiter didn't really know what he was talking about and several of the items on the menu either didn't have an explanation or weren't actually available anymore. The sit down area in the back seemed cool and I'd like to try that out.
google avatar

Bree G.

Yelp
Fantastic, friendly service and excellent sushi! The space was clean, we were promptly greeted with a smile and well taken care of. We caught a mistake on our bill which was quickly corrected. The sushi was super fresh and they have a few unique rolls, which we liked! Can't go wrong here.
