How Chains Like Chipotle Get a Pass on Appropriation | Eater

"A Chinese fast-casual brand that emphasizes education and specificity by using Chinese characters on menus, avoiding region-ascribing dish names, keeping unfamiliar ingredient names (such as furu tofu) intact to prompt curiosity, training staff to answer questions, and creating intentionally named adaptations (like the phonetically derived “Jaja” sauce) when necessary." - Jenny Dorsey

I was visiting a friend from out of town, and she insisted we stop by Junzi for lunch—and I’m so glad she did! There was a slight hiccup when we realized they had adjusted their summer hours to open at noon, but it wasn’t a big deal. The food was absolutely delicious and more than made up for the wait. As soon as the doors opened, the place filled up quickly—a clear sign of how popular it is. The menu offered plenty of great options, and everything was very reasonably priced. Highly recommend if you’re in the area and craving something fresh and flavorful!

The food was amazing here, especially the braised beef shank! The noodles were cooked perfectly and I love their want for attention to detail in presentation and service. The staff were very friendly and provided suggestions or recommendations. For a franchise, this place is a fresh breath of air for Blacksburg. I would say the only suggestion I had was portioning. If I was paying extra for a premium meat, I would hope for more than 4 pieces of meat. Additionally, in one of my bowls, I was given a single piece of bok choy. All things considered, I understand they are still new and experimenting their menu, this is a good start!

They didn’t have the rice noodles at the time I went which was 2pm way after they open. Also the portion size is small for the money. Atleast my bowl was very less. My friends bowl was bigger. Taste wise good!

Food is amazing and staff are extremely friendly as well. My mom and I were visiting the area and we met the owner, who gave us free drinks and we had a lovely conversation. Great portion sizes for affordable price, extremely authentic with amazing flavor. Their tea selection is not overly sweet and very refreshing. Great experience and will be coming back!

Like that I can create my own food especially I can choose the noodle out of 3 kinds. I personally like the knife noodle(?). But I wish they describe more about the sauces and I can choose them too. Oh and I loooooove the spicy sauce!! It is sooooo good. You have to ask the casher about it.

This place was so nice! The staff is very friendly and the food was good and surprisingly quite healthy. The prices are affordable, and the atmosphere is clean, modern, and fun. The decor is also cute and has a bright vibe.

Loved the healthy version of noodles. It was so yummy, especially the firecracker chicken. The portions are great. They have good tea. Would recommend.

Delicious knife noodles and tofu. Service was amazing and my (very affordable) bowl was packed. Menu also includes labeled vegetarian options! I will be coming back again.

Yelp
Get the special Yuzu Pepper Ramen..! I originally ordered this as an additional to go order on top of the poke bowl and Gyudon (Japanese Beef Bowl) my partner and I ordered. However after sampling one bite, we ended up finishing everything..! Quite harmoniously savory without being overwhelming in saltiness or sweetness. For desert, the Japanese cheesecake was nice and fluffy, more like a sponge cake with a hint of sweetness served with a dallop of whipped cream. I recognize these as the prepackaging kind one can get from Japanese grocery stores. Tasty nevertheless, would be better if strawberries were added. Everything we had was quite tasty here. Authentic Japanese food!

Yelp
This is a fast casual place, one native to NYC but apparently the founders have Virginia Tech ties and so have expanded here. It was in the offing seemingly forever and they're still working the kinks out, with some of the noodles being unavailable when I checked, as well as their tea. By and large, I have not seen Asian cuisines in the fast casual world; Chipotle tried to get a spinoff called Shophouse going but it never really took off. The poke bowl places are the only ones I can think of that have really succeeded in this niche. Junzi promises some legitimately Chinese flavors, and it did deliver. The knife cut springy wheat noodles were thankfully back in stock when I decided to order, and they have a delightful texture. To fill out a bowl, a few vegetable options are available, and two different types of tofu are among the proteins. I found the griddled tofu mouthwatering and it did have a nicely crisped edge. The suite of other options was not huge but did include some nice things like Mandarin oranges and bok choy. I got a salad and a noodle bowl, and having skipped breakfast, was able to scarf down both bowls. The salad doesn't make a meal by itself is what I'm saying. I see some room for improvement in the menu, but when I've looked for literally anything Chinese and vegetarian-friendly in Southwest Virginia, I have not found much worth my time. The sauces and ingredients here delivered the taste I was hoping for.

Yelp
We have been waiting a long time for Junzi to open. Have tried it in NYC and loved it! So happy it's finally here! Had the Furu Sesame Knife noodles with Cantonese BBQ chicken and also the beef bone broth soup! Loved them all and so filling! Can't wait to go back!!!!! Welcome to Virginia, Junzi!

Yelp
I come here with my friend. The environment is clean and tidy, and the food is good. The decoration is beautiful and shiny. This restaurant reminds me of my hometown.
