Where to Find the Best California Burritos in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"A Morena Avenue institution, this taco shop keeps the area’s workforce and visitors well-fed with its always-dependable burritos. As one of the heartier entries on this lineup, JV’s California burrito is generously sized and includes an impressive amount of guacamole and sour cream to offset the grilled meat and french fries. Expect an eclectic dining room experience with mismatched table chairs and paint in different primary colors on the walls." - Candice Woo

The Most Iconic Dishes of Food to Eat in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"Established almost 30 years ago, this Morena Boulevard taco shop is known for its gargantuan burritos, with one of its bestsellers being its take on the California burrito, Swaddled in foil and classic yellow taco shop paper, the two-hander is stuffed with carne asada, French fries, guacamole, sour cream, and cheese." - Eater Staff

The Anatomy of the Giant Surf and Turf Burrito at JV’s Mexican Food - Eater San Diego

"At JV’s Mexican Food, one of the city’s busiest taco shops, the classic land and sea combo is by far the top seller. According to manager Julio Carrillo, it’s been on the menu since day one of the 28-year-old Morena Boulevard restaurant, the self-proclaimed “home of the surf and turf.” On a busy Saturday in the summer, Carrillo says JV’s will sell at least 50. Ordering a surf and turf burrito at JV’s is like entering into a competitive eating challenge with yourself. The burrito is so gargantuan that it requires two platter-sized flour tortillas, laid overlapping, to contain everything. The finished burrito, wrapped in signature taco shop yellow paper and then foil — with a wedge of lime tucked inside — measures about 10.5 inches long and 4.5 inches wide. Its sheer size and weight might be the surf and turf’s most impressive qualities, but JV’s version smartly incorporates some non-standard ingredients that elevate it beyond an everyday carne asada burrito with a few shrimp thrown in." - Candice Woo

Being a San Diego native, this is a very popular and well known Mexican spot. I been here sometime in the past around 2015 and then came back again 10 years later. This time I ordered a Surf and Turf Burrito which has shrimp & carne asada with rice and guacamole warped in 2 four tortillas, salted peppers onions and tomatoes. The burrito was absolutely massive but super good. There are so many different burritos, quesadillas and you see all the variety with signs throughout the store. I am plotting which burritos to try next when I go back!

Google
Never disappoints. I tried something different- the Acapulco Shrimp cocktail with clamato. It was served with crackers and the portion was pretty big. It was fresh with avocado, onions, cilantro, lime and tomatoes covered with clamato. The clamato was mild, not spicy. The shop has salsa available so you can spice it up if you like. It was served in a container ith a lid - good thing because I had to take half of it home. There were large shrimp as well as some shrimp pieces. Delicious and I would order it again. The restaurant was clean and has nice decor, plenty of seating and the staff were friendly and service was quick.

Super friendly staff and the food is great. The surf and turf burrito was huge, for $15 you can split it into 3 meals making it a good value proposition haha

Google
Were close to the Pacific Beach area and saw this taco place on Google Maps. It was on Morena, so it was pretty close. We decided to give it a try, especially given that it had very high ratings. Definitely didn't disappoint. We tried the pollo asado burrito and the carnitas taco. Both were excellent. The carnitas was nicely done. Crisp yet chewy on the inside. We had a side of chips and beans and the red salsa was amazing. Definitely worth the ratings. Thanks for watching!

Google
My parents just found this gem and brought my little family here, the flavors are amazing and portions are great! You can count on leftovers if you get a surf and turf burrito!

Yelp
The value for the amount of money you pay beats anything in San Diego. The burritos are not only delicious, they are gigantic so come with an appetite, or split it with someone. Wish we could bring this place back home with us!!

Yelp
Food was really good and plentiful portions. We had a big hungry group after an afternoon at the beach. We tried everything including fish tacos, plates, chips and guacamole, cinnamon chips and even a burger. The people working here were so kind and friendly, we were also shocked how quickly we received our order. I really wanted a diet soda that day but they seemed to be out which was a bummer as all drinks are cans but selection was strange. Get the cinnamon chips - they were so so good. We were happy to have found this local place for our after beach snack - we will now be sure to come back again

Yelp
My sister and I were leaving a workout nearby and I was obviously in the mood to treat myself. She'd been to this spot before (she lives about ten minutes away and I live in Los Angeles) and suggested it. She got a breakfast burrito and I asked for the surf & turf burrito but asked if they could do half the rice and add lettuce instead because I love crunchy. When I tell you that this burrito was HUGE for $14.... Not a single part of that statement is a lie. I was very happy with the burrito, lots of shrimp and they were so plump! Can't wait to be very hungry and come back to this spot for this exact burrito!

Yelp
A legit lil whole in the wall(respectfully).. Stopped by after a long day at Sea World. You can see the Tacos ain't no joke! Babies are pretty big. Yes, it's a disappointment to see them naked, but my child insist on plain plain plain! He really enjoyed them and was full! The food taste pretty good, and they were not stingy with the Guac! The salsa was good not spicy, though. There was a steady flow of customers as we dined in! Very chill vibe. You can tell it's family owned by the pictures on the wall and supports their local community. They have a huge menu that, hopefully, we'll get familiar with as we continue our Sea world trips! Restrooms available..

Yelp
This place offers friendly and fast service. The shrimp taco was good. I also enjoyed their red hot salsa. I'm not a fan of corn tortillas, so I just ate the inside of the taco . I will be back to try something else...

Yelp
I was told about this place....late nite and checked it out. There are menus everywhere when u walk in. Menus written on paper u have to find them. It's a regular food place with seating and all. I ended up ordering a ground beef burrito and fish tacos. I got the shredded beef instead of ground beef....but it wasn't bad. The fish tacos were good. There's a lot of food choices there and if you want some food swing on by....Make sure you check your order!

Yelp
This place was recommended to me by a local who has been coming here for years. I'm so glad I listened. I'm usually a pretty plain eater so I don't like a lot of fluff in my burritos so I got the simple roast pork burrito and it was so good! The green chile sauce added just the right amount of flavor. Oh, and if you're looking for a lot of food, this is it. I felt like I was doing bicep curls carrying this thing out of the restaurant. I could've split this in half with someone. They have their own private parking lot but it's small so I can see how it could fill up quickly during a busy hour since they share it with other businesses. The place has a mom and pop feel and I loved that! I will definitely be stopping by again to try more of their menu.

Yelp
This spot is truly a hidden gem. They are in a very small parking lot hidden in the corner. You'll miss it if you aren't looking. We came on a Monday night, and it was super busy. There were a lot of people coming in, and also a lot of people sitting. The area is pretty big inside enough to fit a pretty large party. There were about 8 of us and we had a lot of space. The menu is pretty big. It took us a little bit to read through everything. The prices are also very affordable. Everything was around $10. I got the Carne asada Burrito, which includes Carne asada, guac, and Pico. It was HUGE and very tasty. The tortilla was soft, and the meat was very tasty. Mine was about $10.50. My wife got the tacos and she liked them. We also ordered taquitos and Carne asada fries. Everything was very tasty, and the portions were all very big. Definitely recommend this place if you're close by! Bring an appetite cause it's filling!

Yelp
JV's: always 10/10. Been coming here pretty much my whole life. It's always my go to! Can't go wrong with any of the vegetarian items (bean burrito, bean tostada, veggie burrito, California quesadilla) but their carne items and breakfast burritos are also lit.
google avatar

Myphuong L.

Yelp
This place is so colorful. The different color walls and bright colored construction paper all over the walls and windows displaying more items from the menu. It was a bit overwhelming in addition to the menu board. We've been seeing the breakfast burrito on social media as the best breakfast burrito. Then when I was looking at the menu, I'm a sucker for flautas and chiliquiles. Got all 3 and oh wow this place is affordable. Chicken flautas ($8.95)- came with 3 flautas topped with cheese and sour cream, lettuce, tomatoes and guacamole on the side Crunchy Breakfast chipotle burrito ($9.90) - this is huge! Has crispy bacon, eggs and potatoes. Every bite had a crisp. Chiliquiles ($11.90)- We got green instead of red sauce. You get a side of rice and beans with scrambled eggs. As well as a side of tortillas. Never had this combination before. We also added a side of Creamy chipotle sauce for $0.75. The taste wasn't the best, best. But you get the best bang for your buck. It was affordable and you get a complete meal. They don't have a salsa bar but they have a fridge full of squeeze bottles of the red or green sauce.

Yelp
JV's is a quick Mexican joint located on Morena Boulevard not too far from the University of San Diego. They have been open for many years so obviously are doing something right. Today I ordered the Carne Asada quesadilla which is pretty huge. Tip: try ordering it with the spicy flour tortilla to give it a kick. The quesadilla comes with loads of carne asada and guacamole inside. They have a red and green salsa that you can also use with it. Personally, I prefer the red. Service here is always prompt and friendly. I've seen many of the same faces for years when stopping by for lunch. There is table seating and they also have a brisk carry out business as well. I do miss the salsa bar which has been taken down since COVID. They used to have spicy carrots and peppers on it. It can get a little warm inside on hot days so take that into consideration over the summer.

Yelp
Technically, I'd give this place an overall 3.75. The service was friendly and super fast! I called in a large order for pick-up and they said it would be ready in about 10-15 minutes and it certainly was ready by the time we got there. The ambiance of the place has traditional Mexican decor on the walls, but the music played was "old school", music which I loved. The food was ok to good. Ok was my Del Mar burrito. It comes with shrimp, battered fish, beans, and the "veggies". I rate this burrito 3.5 because I feel it was quantity over quality. This burrito was literally the width of my thigh and length of my arm! It was super huge! I felt like I couldn't taste the fish (they needed to add more of it) with the overpowering beans and veggies. If I was to order this again, I'll probably ask for no lettuce (which sorta "watered" down the burrito) and beans on the side. As far as the shrimps inside, it would've been better to have them seasoned more because they tasted plain. I will certainly visit again, but I'm not sure I'll order the same thing unless it had my suggested changes.

Yelp
If you want cheap eats, come here and save some money. This place is close to seaworld about 5 mins away. It is packed. I got 3 tacos for $6.99. They are the street tacos but they are somehow filling. The tacos were mid as the meat was dry and lacks juicy flavor and salt. The vibe gives a typical Mexican restaurant vibe. It gives old Mexico vibes and mom and pop vibe. I would come here first so you don't spend any money in the park.

Jessie S.

Yelp
The food is fresh and amazing, I have been coming here for years and never had any issues with my orders. Service is always great at this cute place. The burritos are huge and soups are delicious.
google avatar

Matt M.

Yelp
The burritos are huge! Not only do they give large portions but the food tastes amazing! They have great specialty burritos and the prices are lot less than most taco shops in town.

Alison K.

Yelp
Amazing and fresh food!! The shrimp tacos and the rolled tacos were both so good. Best meal of my whole trip! As a bonus, the owners helped me when I realized I locked my keys in my car. They were SO kind and generous about helping me out! Seems like a family-owned spot since a mom, daughter, and granddaughter all helped me at once. I'm so grateful for their kindness! So happy the food was as great as the people so I could leave such a great review! Will be on my must-go list for San Diego from now on!

Yelp
Came here in the morning as I really wanted chilaquiles. The place I normally go wasn't convenient to get to. The staff was very brusque. The place wasn't very busy and they were impatient with the person in front of me who didn't know what they wanted so they helped me. Good for me as I got served faster but I felt bad for that person as they have so many menu options. They have indoor seating and plenty of it. Got my food, went back to work. This was the blandest food I have ever tasted. Nothing I had was good or flavorful. I didn't end of eating most if the food as I just could not get over how terrible it was. I will not return here. The salsa is good and that is about all they have going for them.
google avatar

Saliha M.

Yelp
I got carne asada fries for myself and my niece. I got Jamaica as well. The Jamaica is huge. I did get a large but it's going on day 2 where i still have so much which is amazing I usually feel like businesses never give enough for the amount spent. I didn't know jalapeños came on the fries, so my niece and I didn't eat those we just put them on the side. Other than that it was nice to eat the food. Meat was high quality, not burnt and a little chewy. I would've liked the fries to be more crisp and not soft, but the front desk was very nice. They accept Apple Pay.

Yelp
YOU NEED YOU RUN NOT WALK TO JV'S!!!! Omg I am so happy I stumbled upon this restaurant off of Morena Blvd! I originally walked in to grab two tacos, but the owner told me about the street style tacos, so of course I went ahead and ordered them. Holy sh!+ !!!! This is my new favorite Mexican spot! The customer service as soon as I walked in was very welcoming and warm. I went ahead and placed my order along with a side of rice. For 3 street style tacos, Al Pastor, Carne Asada and chicken, and a huge side order of rice, it was ONLY $10! I couldn't believe it hahaha. The restaurant has such a great feeling to it. It feels like family and home. I also could not believe how fast my order came out. HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend JV'S! You will not be disappointed!

Yelp
After a day at seaworld, i definitely wanted some Mexican food. I mean, we are in San Diego! Did a quick search on Yelp and came across this place. Decided to stop by and pick up some food to-go. Came in and ordered 3 tacos, Carne asada fries and a side of rice. Ordering was easy, and the food came up fast. All the sauces and salsa already packed and in the bag too! Not sure if it's cause I was super hungry but it was muy delicioso! More than enough for my fiancé and me. Would def come back if I were in the area.

Yelp
Breakfast burrito with sausage, egg, potato, cheese and a horchata Big to hold, fork helped. I added red sauce it was a bit watery but tasted good. , Service and ambience ok.
google avatar

Yelp
Oh my God some of the best tacos I have had. This is pretty close to the San Diego airport and we were headed to our hotel when we decided to stop and ask for a recommendation and this is where we were told to go. I don't even eat tomatoes and this made me eat tomatoes. We had tacos quesadillas and flautas and they were all delicious. It's a fairly small restaurant but perfect for a quick bite for lunch or dinner you just order at the counter and grab a seat.

Yelp
01-19-2023 Hidden gem in San Diego! My to go place for Mexican food. Best in town. Generous portion (see pic). Ordered: -Carne Asada Burrito $10.15- tasty. -Cal Burrito $10.80 -Menudo $12.90- tender tripe. Creamy soup. Filled with flavorful spices. -Side Beans $2.45- loved it! Note: $0.30 card charge when using credit card.

Yelp
4.3/5.0 This place is great. When you first walk in it may be a little overwhelming with their menu sprawled across every wall in the place, but don't let this scare you. Their food is fresh and very reasonably priced. Can't beat the Taco Tuesday deal for $6 you get 3 tacos and a drink. The workers are always very nice and welcoming and are sure to point you in the right direction if you don't know what you want to eat. Recommend trying their burritos as well. Their Al Pastor is delicious, but the carne asada can be dry on some days. Highly recommend trying this place out!
google avatar

Yelp
The food is good. Large selection of food. Service is friendly and efficient. Nice neighborhood joint for college kids and families. Had the albondigas soup this trip. Large portion, filling and good. Could not finish it.

Yelp
Let me start off by saying the food is still as delicious as I remember it as it was in 1999! I ditched school for 5 months straight during 2nd period for my senior year to come here. I would always get the carne asada fries because they use cheese sauce on it instead of just shredded cheese. They've expanded a little for more dining area and perfect lighting. You definitely get what you pay for here. You will definitely leave satisfied. Burritos are huge.
google avatar

Yelp
I stopped into JV's Mexican Food one morning on the way to the dog park, and I am really glad I did. I love me a good breakfast burrito, and decided to order the grande breakfast burrito, which comes with eggs, cheese, bacon, hash browns, and I think a little bit of beans. I honestly didn't expect too much, I think I just expected a run-of-the-mill quick burrito, but I was pleasantly surprised! First of all, the burrito was huge, it's one of those where you could probably eat that alone all day. Grande indeed. But what also jumped out at me was how delicious it was at first bite, the tortilla was fresh and chewy, and the ingredients were all in perfect proportions in each bite. Maybe it was luck, but I noted how each bite had just the right amount of everything! A real winner at around $9! Also worth noting, it was pretty busy, but the food came out surprisingly fast. The parking lot is tiny, so you might need to park on the street.
google avatar

Ashley R.

Yelp
While I still think they have great food, I have to say that I got the salmon burrito last night which I've got many times before and there was barely any salmon . It was mainly just shredded lettuce and tomatoes so that was pretty disappointing especially for the price for the price and because I know that in the past, there was a substantial amount of salmon, so for that reason, I had to lower the amount of stars
google avatar

Brandon J.

Yelp
OK I know I'm gonna get the debate between the people from Texas and the people from California on whose actual Mexican food is better well I'm here to give the final say sell in the which is better they both are! I do say that if you're in the San Diego area and you have an opportunity to stop by JV's your mouth, your tummy your wallet will thank me first of all the portion size large you are going to pay more for a burrito or a taco than a Texas taco but let's face it there two times as big literally you can eat the surf and turf burrito as much as you can and less you can finish it and tell them to re-wrap it to take home for later so it's like getting two meals in one. Where does that happen at? I'll tell you where right here in San Diego I guess that's why they stay classy number two I have never had Lengua tacos as good as I've ever had here and I've had some great lingua pause. Now I will say it's very flavorful. It's very tender. It's almost decadent the way it just melts in your mouth now ambience it's a taco shop. Let's face it but it's very clean. It's in a great park San Diego. You can stop in for lunch. Breakfast dinner it's just a comfortable quiet area. Great food and great ownership and every time I stop in San Diego this place is a must stop I refuse to give out five stars going forward in 2024, so I'm ending this one in a bang top notch.
google avatar

Lia S.

Yelp
Price is extremely reasonable ($6) for a huge bean and cheese burrito. They're super generous with their to go salsa sizes. Haven't eaten here in years, but glad to pop in recently.

Sarah M.

Yelp
I remember going and getting the pollo asada plate back in the day. It's great that the price hasn't exploded, but the amount of food and quality has decreased by a lot. The plate I got on Easter had a bunch if bones and gristle on the chicken. I had to be careful with my bites, not to chip a tooth. The amount if chicken has decreased by half since covid. I actually visited about a month ago and it was great. Now I'm just confused..
google avatar

YS L.

Yelp
I saw the crunchy chipotle breakfast burrito features in a "best breakfast burritos in San Diego" video and JV's intrigued me the most. And it is a delicious breakfast burrito with a nice chipotle flavor. It's also such a good deal for the amount of food you get. It tastes so good heated up as leftovers too! I think about this burrito a lot. The red salsa goes well with it. The surf & turf burrito is HUGE! There's a very generous amount of shrimp in it. Personally, I much prefer the crunchy chipotle breakfast burrito and I probably will stick to just that from now on. I like how the menus are just posted in different colored paper around the wall and hand-written too and I like that low-key small business vibe. Everyone is also really nice here. :) Highly recommend here for the taste, portion sizes, and price!
google avatar

Becky P.

Yelp
Potato taco special was really good! This is a mom and pop shop and the verde salsa is no joke. It's one of the better ones that doesn't overwhelm you with spice levels and doesn't taste overly watered down. Driving here can be tricky since the streets were poorly designed back in the day but don't let that discourage you from coming. It's very worth it and there's a small lot so if you come during off peak hours or lunch you should be fine. I came during the 12-1pm hour and had no issues getting in and out. I can tell it's a local and and university student favorite though with the USD pride. The menu is legit and it's not for everyone but when they write out menu items like this, it's no frills and they rather spend time providing great food than making their shop Bougie looking. 10/10 would come back!

Melissa W.

Yelp
Best Mexican food in the area. Don't waste your time going to any other place. The service is always top tier and they're so quick. They're the best.
google avatar

Betty L.

Yelp
The place is inside a strip mall. You need to order at the counter and then they take the order to your table. We ordered potato tacos. 5/5, enchiladas 3/5, and Del Mar Burrito 4/5. The floor and restroom needs a thorough cleaning. The Del Mar burrito is HUGE. You can easily share it with 2 people. Their menu prices are very reasonable. Parking can get very tight because it is a small parking lot.
google avatar

Tera M.

Yelp
Been coming here since burritos were 1/2 the price they are now I will continue to return their selection and food great! My shredded beef burrito tonight was the best they have ever made it either a new cook or new recipe this time more meat & less veggies it was delish!

Hunter H.

Yelp
Place has gone way down hill over the years. From my friend finding literal PLASTIC in his food to the quality of food just terrible nowadays.
google avatar

Annie S.

Yelp
Take my five stars, JV!! Fer real though, if you're sleeping on this Mexican spot you had better wake up. Everything on their menu is phenomenal and they will customize it to your liking. What are my preferred eats, you ask? Well, let me tell you: 21 shrimp (fiesta spicy, of course). The taco Tuesday special is the bomb; three street tacos for $7. And of course you can't go wrong with a classic California burrito. No words can describe the size** of this gargantuan meal. **see photos for evidence of a burrito as long as an arm They also sell their red and green sauces in 4ish oz tubs for $2 a pop. It's a perfect addition to our homemade enchilada nights :)

Piko D.

Yelp
Classic Mexican food very good I enjoyed it very much, they've been around a long time so I've heard which is cool too

Yelp
Hot, crunchy, dripping oil. Generous amount of shredded, marinated beef. Great tasting beef taco. Carne asada taco had a good amount of beef. Beef had a very mild flavor and could use more seasoning. Tortilla was soft and had a mild corn flavor. Carnitas taco featured crispy pork. I enjoyed the mild fried flavor of the pork. Buenelos was crunchy and had a sweet cinnamon flavor. Great tasting dessert. JV's Mexican Food has tasty tacos and is now my favorite spot to get buenelos. Staff was friendly and got my order out quick.

Yelp
How is it possible that this place is still up and running with MULTIPLE food poisoning reviews on here?! Not even around one date either, like hella spread out over months or years. Food Safety, where ya at?
google avatar

Nate P.

Yelp
Nice little burrito shop right off morena. Parking is a little tricky at times but if you can get in it's worth it. Staff was cool and food came out quick. Super big menu with tons of options, literally something for everyone. I went with an Al pastor burrito with onions and cilantro only. I kinda like to make a giant taco burrito. Meat was pretty tasty and the red salsa was nice. I'll definitely pop back in if I am in the area to check out some of their other meals. My buddy's got a surf and turf burrito that was massive. Definitely some big portions coming out of this place.

Yelp
I miss living in San Diego, and I came back with a mission to satiate my surf n' turf burrito appetite that I couldn't fulfill in LA. I was in old town, but this option popped out at me and lured me with the slogan about its signature dish. I came here on an early evening, and the crowd was small, which lets the line goes quickly. I'm glad I decided to share one surf n' turf burrito, because my girlfriend and I couldn't finish close to half of it at all. The meat was plentiful, and the shrimp soft, whole, but small. It's great that the rice wasn't too filling, and there's plenty of variety of vegetables to mix it all around. At the end of our meal when we felt full, we only finished half of this. Truly this mighty burrito needed two blankets of tortilla to wrap this baby up. I truly hope the prices stay the same so plentiful more folks can enjoy this experience.

Yelp
What happened to JV's?? The guac is black and where is the meat and cheese??? It looked like somebody already ate it! Luckily I had some Avo and made my own!

Yelp
My husband and I have been eating here for years! We found this spot back when we lived in Linda Vista years ago, we live in north Park now and still make the drive (rather my husband does ) for their food. Couple of our go to's are their chipotle breakfast burrito, cheese enchilada plate, flautas, carne asada burrito and their chicken mole. We literally just ate from here last night for dinner but I'm pregnant and want it again tonight lol. Can't go wrong with JVs food is always so delicious and service has always been friendly.

Yelp
This was the closest Mexican food place near the Airbnb I was staying at so my friends and I gave it a try and WOW it filled me up extremely well :) The place was authentic in terms of the workers, the ambience, and most importantly, the food. The burritos were massive and the price was extremely affordable. It kept me satisfied until dinner which is always a good sign ;) The sausage bits inside the burrito were slightly salty for my liking but I also don't eat many salty meals on the daily so taking that into account - the flavor was still well-rounded and delicious! The worker's recommendations: - Almuerzo Burrito - Crunchy Chipotle Burrito

Yelp
This is my second time coming here. The first time, my boyfriend got the new chipotle breakfast burrito and I got the California burrito. I was not a fan of the California burrito. Maybe it was the guac? Maybe I'm not used to guac in California burritos? Anyways, I was not a fan but because my bf loved this place, we came back. We both got the chipotle breakfast burrito and it was fire! Super goood stuff. The waiter also asked us if we wanted the carrots, they were okay, but the burrito was fire! I'll be coming back! Super great service, and great food, great vibes. Next time I'll probably ask to go lighter on the chipotle sauce, just my preference because I'm not a big saucy gal.

Yelp
I always have to stop at JVs when I'm in SD. The burritos are nothing short of EPIC!! You definitely need to bring your appetite or at least a friend or 2 if you're planning on ordering one of their deliciously ginormous burritos. So many options and so many flavors.
