JW Marriott San Francisco Union Square

"How did it strike you on arrival? The lobby of the JW Marriott is an exuberant space, with a large sculpture of people dancing at the center of its inlaid stone floor. Red accents brighten things up, from the furniture to the in-lobby bar and even glass chandeliers. Take a seat by the gas fire, or tilt your head back to get a glimpse of the soaring atrium, and other guests who might be looking down from above. Kids might enjoy the novelty of the cylindrical glass elevators that run between floors. Nice. What’s the crowd like? Thanks to more than 12,000 feet of event space, you'll see conventioneers and people on business, as well as shoppers making the short walk to Union Square. The good stuff: Tell us about your room. The Marriott just renovated its guest rooms, so everything is brand new. The palette is a light gray with pops of red, and stone and wood accents. At 360 square feet, even the smallest rooms aren't teeny-tiny, and every one comes with a desk and ergonomic chair for worker bees. We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?Hotel rooms come with pillow-top mattresses, feather beds, and duvets. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase?In-room Bose radios seem worthy of theft. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down.Even the smallest rooms are outfitted with marble bathrooms, have a separate shower and tub, and a lighted makeup mirror. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word?High-speed internet is $9.95 per day; internet fast enough to stream is $16.95. Staff: If you could award one a trophy, who gets it, and why?The doorman in the port-cochere was very friendly. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you.The 24-hour fitness center has wood floors, big windows to let light stream in, and machines that come with their own TV screens. Event planners, take note: The JW Marriott has more than 12,000 feet of work space, and 14 different event rooms. What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay?At Post and Mason, the JW Marriott is just a couple of blocks from the shopping of Union Square, but it's also very close to the Tenderloin neighborhood. Bottom line: worth it, and why?If you're a business traveler going to a convention or planning a meeting, this is a great place." - Elise Craig

We enjoyed our stay at this Marriott. All the staff were great. Our stay was short, but we felt right at home. Rooms are big with expanded bathrooms. My only complaint would be that the shower doors don't close well and sometimes let water out of the shower. The 3rd floor has a dining and bar area, with a coffee and snacks area. This is where we enjoyed our evenings and mornings before we went out to explore the city

I will definitely recommend this hotel. Although we booked it at a slightly discounted rate as members, it was still excellent value for money. The rooms were spacious and clean, and the in-room amenities were great—high-quality shampoo, fresh linens, and everything we needed to feel comfortable. The service was outstanding—reception, room service, and concierge were all consistently helpful. Every time we requested a taxi, the staff made sure to confirm the destination with the driver so we wouldn’t get lost, even though we had lived in San Francisco for a while. The most discomforting aspect of the stay was the general condition and dirt of the city itself, but of course, that has no impact on the hotel’s rating. The in-house restaurant wasn’t particularly impressive, but they do offer a nice selection of cocktails and drinks.

Subject: Disappointing Stay at JW Marriott San Francisco – Below Expected Standards Dear JW Marriott San Francisco Management, I recently stayed at your property expecting a premium experience in line with the JW Marriott brand. Unfortunately, my experience was well below expectations and left me genuinely disappointed. From the outset, I noticed a surprising lack of attention to detail and absence of basic in-room amenities. For a hotel that positions itself as a luxury offering, I was dismayed to find no bathrobe provided in the room—something I would consider standard, even at mid-tier hotels. I had to request it separately, which was inconvenient and disrupted what should have been a seamless stay. Even more concerning was the complete absence of basic personal care amenities such as: Toothbrush and toothpaste Comb Razor and shaving cream Cotton buds and shower cap None of these were available in the room, nor were they proactively offered. These are essentials that even budget hotels often include without request. It was disappointing to have to call housekeeping for every individual item. This is not the level of service or convenience expected from a JW Marriott. While I understand that some hotels have reduced in-room offerings for sustainability or cost reasons, such changes should be clearly communicated upfront or compensated with exemplary service responsiveness. Unfortunately, that was not the case during my stay. The overall experience fell short of the comfort, hospitality, and thoughtful service that I associate with the Marriott name. As someone who travels frequently and often chooses Marriott properties because of their consistency and standards, this stay was an unfortunate exception. I hope you take this feedback seriously and use it to improve your guest experience moving forward. Basic amenities should not be an afterthought, especially when guests are paying for a premium stay.

We love this hotel and have stayed multiple times. Antonio at the Front Desk is fantastic - he's been there for years and is a wealth of knowledge. Our room was terrific with the best bathrobes ever! Enjoyed the breakfast buffet, too! Will definitely stay there again!

We got a great deal on our night at the JW and booked it for a weekend in the city. The rooms were great, and service was good, although we did have to ask a few times for something. Biggest issue at the moment is that the lobby is under construction, so while our room was large and pretty, the rest of the hotel was not much to look at. Would try this place again in a few months after renovations are done.

We stayed at the JW Marriott for a family vacation. It is conveniently located near Union Square and two tram lines. The hotel lobby is not on street level, which always makes for a slightly less friendly experience. However, a bellman from the hotel was always there whenever we came and went. Hotel seemed to be very busy with business travelers. Any time we wanted to speak with a concierge we had to make a two or three people line. Breakfast was also busy. Quality was fine, although for the price I would expect a bit more Rooms were great, quiet and clean. We had a king-bed "superior floor" room. Lot's of space for our three large bags. Bed was confortable. TV system was fine. Restroom was clean. One thing to note, this is a tall hotel with an open space all through the middle. The balcony-walkway to the rooms are protected by a beautiful steel balustrade. However, it's configuration leaves large empty spaces that seemed to allow a small kid to go through, so we did not allow our 5 year old to walk around with holding hands. See pictures.

Honestly, this might be the most disappointing JW Marriott I’ve ever stayed at. Here’s why:||Check-in was a mess. Got there at 8 PM, a line of tired people, and only one person working the front desk. Come on.||Elevators take forever. More than once, I waited 10+ minutes just to go up or down. Not great when you’re in a hurry.||My key cards just… didn’t work. Went down three times to get new ones, and the front desk lady looked more annoyed each time. Turns out, the lock itself was broken. Maintenance "fixed" it, but guess what? Stopped working again the next day. BTW did I mention the slow elevators? ||Breakfast for elites? Bare minimum. Yeah, it’s technically their policy, but the regular Marriott down the street gives elites hot breakfast. This one? Sad pastries and cereal. Lame.||Desk in the room is a joke. Just a high bar table with stools—zero back support, terrible for working. If you’re here for business, good luck.||Bottom line: Expected way better from a JW. Wouldn’t stay again

Along with my mom and daughter, I stayed at this JW Marriott property for a half work/half spring break week. The hotel is a smaller property, but comfortable, and felt like a safe refuge from the city activity outside. My experience with the front desk was great. Notable shout outs go to Anthony and Jake, who helped me on separate days when the coffee ran out earlier than the 8:30 a.m. end time. They were both so accommodating, and delivered really stellar customer service, which I was grateful for. ||The room was comfortable and roomy - we all slept well in the beds. I loved that the closet/storage area was a little separate from the sleeping area, lending to a more spacious feel. ||The gym was great - I loved starting my mornings there at 6 a.m. with the other early risers. All the equipment was state of the art and modern, and it appeared that staff would come around regularly to wipe it all down. ||We didn't dine at the restaurant, but there were always a good number of people eating there or at the bar. One morning, I went down to the restaurant to order a steamed milk, and the kindest server greeted and helped me. She was SO sweet and kind, I am kicking myself for not remembering her name. It started with a B, and was "Bizen" or "Bison." If management happens to read this and knows who I'm referring to, please recognize this amazing lady. ||The hotel does not have a pool, so that may be something to note for families with young kids. It's walking distance from a bunch of great restaurants, and you really can't beat the location. Docking one star because $80/day for valet parking just feels incredibly wrong. Otherwise we loved our stay here.

Yelp
I'm going to be comparing and contrasting this JW with the brand's DC and London locations as well as the SF Marriott Marquis. Room Ambiance: It was a very spacious room, which boasted a larger than average fridge with small freezer section. There was sadly no desk, but it did have a small chair and a two person high top table. Unlike the Marquis, my room was carpeted however the cleaner they use is quite scented, although it does tend to fade quickly within a day. I loved that unlike the Marquis they did not have a wifi booster in every room, although the biggest downside for me was their closet had no door. Overall I felt like the DC and London locations were much cleaner and more luxurious and the Marquis more allergen friendly. Room Sound: There was quite a bit of street noise in the room, and they are designed to be very close together (utilizing crooked hallways to give space). Lounge: Similar to DC, this JW doesn't have one, however the Marquis does. Elevator: It's an old design and there are four of them. The button often wouldn't register a tap, and one was out of order while I visited. Snack counter: Those with status are able to get free coffee and I received free drink coupons. Price: It's about on par with the Marquis, which has a full lounge M-F that serves breakfast, appetizers, and snacks. At this JW I pre-paid at roughly 166/night with a $35 destination fee but unlike at the Marquis I felt the destination fee wasn't recouped. Overall location: In my opinion the Marquis's location near Yerba Buena is easier to commute to and from around the city, since it's closer to the Market rail lines but the JW's open driveway was much easier to get picked up from. The biggest downside to this location was that it was on a steeper hill so it wasn't great to walk up to. Service/logistics: Reception is on the third floor which was poorly designed. At most two people could stand in line without blocking the elevator. My guess is that it used to be downstairs and they moved it upstairs for security. Which, in speaking of security, with this JW you don't need a key card to use the elevator. Not great for San Francisco, and very unusual for the brand. The service itself was incredibly friendly and helpful and I was able to check in early with no issues. TLDR: At the end of the day beyond the fact that the Marquis has wifi boosters in every room and you are required to keep them plugged in (which takes it completely off the table for us), there aren't that many reasons to go with this JW over the similarly priced Marquis other than it's location.

Yelp
Located near Union Square. Daily fee valet parking $79, noticed a parking garage across the street for $35 -$50 although unsure of details. - walking distance to Union Square and what's left of restaurants & shops there. - bart about 2 blocks away 1 night stay due to going to Oracle for Giants game and next morning had an all Day seminar at hotel . Tourist destination so room was $$. Booked a double bed for mini mom & daughter weekend with some Girlfriends. Front desk very friendly and helpful. Made us feel very welcomed even though we are locals to area. Bed was very comfortable. Nice touches inside room, usb plugs through out room. Paid snack bar. Complimentary coffee and 2 water bottles. Usable refrigerator although no microwave seen. Bathroom very plush and modern vanity. Able to use $20 credit for restaurant. Would stay again.

Yelp
It has been decades since I have been to San Francisco. I always feel welcome when I arrive at Marriott. This location is in the Union Square area. Very nice hotel. Lobby and restaurant bar located on 3rd floor. Gym is a little small but decent workout equipment. Friendly staff. Will definitely visit here again.

Always amazing stays at JW's - the views here are amazing and the bar was a great place to hang out

Yelp
I stayed here recently over Labor Day weekend and overall it was a pleasant stay. The prices are pretty reasonable and it's in a good location near Union Square...a lot of the tours also pick up near here. The rooms are clean and the bathroom is actually pretty nice, better than most hotels in the area. The downsides are that they don't have true room service (you have to pick up downstairs), and it feels a little lower tier than what you would expect from a JW. But then again, the prices are pretty cheap. Overall, the JW Marriott is a great option if you want to stay near Union Square. Clean rooms and a nice bathroom...not much more you could ask for. It's great value, especially if you don't mind sacrificing some of the service you would normally expect from a JW Marriott branded hotel.

Yelp
Very nice stay. We stayed overnight. The room was nice and very modern. Everything and everyone on staff was wonderful. The breakfast was basic but good. Coffee amazing! Had some drinks and dinner. Overall I'd book a stay here again.

Yelp
I've stayed at multiple JW Marriott hotels and this location left much to be desired. I'm being generous with my rating due to its location (short walk to Union Square and metro/cable cars) and the other hotel staff who made my stay pleasant. Two days prior to arrival, I requested an early check-in and was told it would be honored, if available, as a Bonvoy Elite member. Upon arrival, the older gentleman at the front desk was flat out unpleasant and rude. Not even one attempt to make small talk nor greet me with a smile - cold and robotic. Anyhow, the older gentleman stated I would need to pay $100 for the early check-in or I could wait in the lounge area for 2 hours to avoid the fee. I opted for the latter and found a spot to get some work done. I do agree with previous reviews, that one should carefully review the hotel bill upon check-out for errors. The mandatory destination passport fee ($30+taxes), which includes your food/beverage credit, needs to be manually entered on your hotel bill after check-out. If you consume meals/drinks on-site make sure to hold onto your receipts or keep notes on your smartphone for reference. Overall décor is a tad dated but the rooms are spacious and comfortable. Would I stay here again? - probably not.

Great hotel. Great location. Great service. Had a killer brunch too. Loved all the games to play- great family bonding!

Yelp
Check your bills!! I stayed five nights, and two of the nights they charged me for $200-300 worth of minibar items that I didn't even touch! When I complained, they said they would remove the minibar from my room (turns out it's against hotel policy to do that, I'm not sure why they recommended it). The second time, they said they couldn't remove the charges until I was ready to check out. So of course that meant once I was ready to check out, I had to wait 15 minutes for them to sort out the bill. The concierge said that there a sensors in the room that go off when they are cleaning and organizing the minibar, which can lead to accidental charges - it was clear to me that they knew this was an issue. It was a bigger room than I expected and pretty clean, but I will never stay here again.

Yelp
JW Marriott in Union Square is my hotel of choice when I'm in town for work. Coming home from work and being welcomed by their daily complimentary free drink (served from 5-6pm) is delightful and their daily $30 food and drink credit (which I more times than not end up using each night on their JW Mule) is a fun little treat too. Other positives include the fact that their rooms are incredibly spacious, they offer slippers (which I no longer take for granted), the elevator doesn't require a keycard, relative proximity to public transportation, and solid water pressure in the showers.

A B.

Yelp
This place is a blight on the neighborhood. Every night, a tractor trailer delivers to the hotel and blocks the entire sidewalk, forcing everyone going up mason st. to walk into oncoming traffic. Get a shorter truck and show a shred of respect to the people who live and work in the area.

Yelp
JW is always a confusing brand. It has one foot into basics and another into an attempt at luxury. More often then not, it's much closer to a run of the mill Marriott than something in a five star realm. The checkin was smooth, but also finding out that there is no breakfast or lounge included was interesting, even with status. They do give 4k points per night instead, which obviously never got credited after the stay and the hotel would defer back to the main Marriott line, which would defer back to the hotel. Pretty messy and never fun having to sort out their poor process. The upside was scoring an upgrade to a larger room. It's a decently appointed space, but certainly not luxurious by any means. Fake orchids, really? It was clearly another cheap attempt a room renovation as a whole. The bathroom was spacious and I am thankful for the upgrade overall. The lobby and common areas are a pretty classic 60s or 70s conference hotel design: in other words nothing notable. Breakfast was a disaster with rotten berries being served. Despite raising this issue to front desk, they did not bother to do anything and I did not push further than just letting them know. Late checkout for Titanium guest was honored as it should. The reason for the overall placement of this property as a two star review: there is simply nothing about it to warrant the price tag or attachment to a JW Marriott brand. It's just a plain old Marriott and subpar one at that.

Yelp
Say Bonvoy! I managed to stay in this hotel because I couldn't make it back home after a really nice concert. The quality here is at prime minister level because you are paying a hefty price for a room with top of the line features. With the easing of travel restrictions, this place is a big choice for local travelers and business people alike. My room had a great view and the linens were clean and crisp. You cannot beat quality like that anywhere. If you are a Marriott member you get a decent amount of points that can be earned. I stay in different Marriott brands and this one stands out from the rest. Staff here is very friendly, they are very sweet to me and made sure I got prime minister quality service. https://www.ispot.tv/ad/IRaz/marriott-bonvoy-bonvoy

Yelp
JW MARRIOTT in San Francisco was super clean, the staff were friendly and courteous, very helpful with recommendations of where to go eat, how get to the baseball stadium, all around nice people. Thank you J.W. Marriott.

Yelp
Very nice and tasteful hotel. My room was very nicely appointed, clear and spacious. Everything is massively overpriced, but that's really to be expected in a JW and in San Francisco generally. It's not really on Union Square, but I will say the cross-streets are a lot less dicey than some of the others in the areas adjacent to the square. Generally great business hotel. I will say, my only disclaimer, and I call it a disclaimer because its a historic hotel and there's nothing to be done about it, is the massive height of the interior atrium is absolutely overwhelming if you have a significant fear of heights! I would, in hindsight, have requested a low-floor. Am I a big wuss? Definitely. Do I mention this hoping other big wusses might benefit? Absolutely.
google avatar

Yelp
They had pretty good customer service. The hotel has really dated, and for the price... you could book other top spots in the city that have better accommodations.

Yelp
Love the hotel. The staff is really welcoming except maybe the room service manager. He's seems a little annoyed today. My order got messed up and it was like an inquisition explaining to me that I was talking about 3 different issues im addressing in one sentence vs just saying yep, we got the order wrong and let me focus on fixing that vs how you speak English. Thanks dude for ruining my day today cuz you are pissed off about something else. I know it ain't personal but damn way to make me want downgrade back to Marriott Union square for my monthly work trips to SF. I have this hotel a shot since it's right around the corner but if I'm going to get mansplained to about my verbal skills when I'm putting in long work days -----ill go to a hotel that at least has nicer staff all around.

Yelp
A dated hotel with a great location, but very limited amenities. If you don't score a $150/night (or less room) rate, I wouldn't suggest staying here. Union Square is only best for ready access to Chinatown and high-end retail stores. Here's where I caveat my status with Marriott Bonvoy, no swagger, but just to inform that I have experienced many Marriott and J.W. Marriott hotels worldwide over the past 20+ years for both business and leisure travel. I am a Lifetime Titanium Elite member with Marriott Bonvoy. And, I did blow one of my Suite Upgrade certificates for my one-night stay in early January 2022. First, the front desk was understaffed and the person working there was terse and without friendless or nuance. I had to drag out the facts that the Concierge Lounge was not open and that I would not be provided with ANY breakfast. In lieu of that, I would only be provided a "bonus" of 1,000 points. Only a 1,000 elite status was offered, no free breakfast or other local welcome gift. Now, let's discuss the room. If a "studio suite" is really a suite, then since I enjoy hockey, I must be a goalie in the NHL. Suffice it to say, the (single room) was small and stuffed with both living room and bedroom furniture. The view was unremarkable. No bathrobes or slippers were provided in my suite. Only basic bathroom amenities (with mixed brands) were there. The water pressure in the shower was very low. In summary, I can't find any really redeeming qualities to this hotel. The staff I encountered were not helpful, no normal Marriott Bonvoy benefits were honored, the "suite" was lousy with very poor water pressure and limited amenities. Poor performance for a Residence Inn, an unconscionable lapse in quality and service for a J.W. Marriott. The founder of this hotel chain must be rolling in his grave right now.

Yelp
We have stayed at many hotels in San Francisco, but this one is by far our favorite. We stumbled upon it last year, and there's nowhere else we will stay when we're in the city. The location is fantastic, but what truly makes this hotel stand out is the customer service. From start to finish, the staff was overly accommodating, ensuring we had everything we needed and going above and beyond. Jeff and Nan were especially helpful to me and my boys. Whether we were dining or having breakfast, the service was exceptional. The hotel is staffed by seasoned professionals who understand the essence of excellent customer service. Unlike other hotels that charge annoying resort fees, this hotel provides exceptional value for the price. We got to use electric bikes for an hour, received cable car tickets, and even got a credit. These added bonuses are available to every guest, making it an amazing value overall. The rooms are clean, and the beds are comfortable. We can't wait to come back next year. If you're not familiar with the area, I highly recommend this hotel. We felt very well taken care of and appreciated every little detail. Pros: - Outstanding customer service - Fantastic location - Value-added amenities (electric bikes, cable car tickets, hotel credit) - Clean rooms and comfortable beds We can't wait to return!

Yelp
Great stay over a Memorial Day weekend. Very conveniently located to restaurants and just a 15 walk to the Moscone Center and Museum of Modern At. I was upgraded to a high floor suite room with a spacious layout and nice view of the city. The room amenities are modern (TV, in room espresso and coffee machine). The hotel decor in the halls felt slightly dated, but common areas are elegant and comfortable. All the staff were attentive and helpful. Level III had a delicious breakfast. Overall, I was very happy with my stay at this hotel.

Yelp
Rooms are nice, typical comfy Marriott bed, small side table to work from, not as cramped/small as other downtown San Fran hotels. Located downtown San Francisco, Union Square so close to shopping district, financial district and touristy Chinatown. Service is great, nice friendly helpful.

Yelp
JW Marriott San Francisco needs help! In short? The overall experience is..... meh! As a brand JW Marriott brand worldwide The Concierge is a victim of COVID ("disappeared"). In their place, one is connected to an invariably flustered operator / stand-in who says "lemme look it up on Google" Breakfast is EXTORTIONATELY EXPENSIVE. $67 (and change) for 1 x eggwhite omelet + 1 x coffee (refilled twice) + 1 x juice / smoothie concoction (beet, pineapple & something else, I think) + 1 x bottle of water + 1 x orange juice. Lapdances are offer a better value-for-money proposition! Packages arrived in mailroom prior to arrival. As soon as we were in room, we rang it took no less than four staff members ("operator" at 5:58 in the morning, bellman "Hy", another "bellman" (who seemed utterly clueless) and finally the beloved "Allie" and over 5 hours for the staff to find 12 boxes The "road warrior" area is a table in a cavern like space off the the side of the lobby: there are no wall plugs etc We were "upgraded" in room categories. The room had a weird layout (where the bathroom was to the right, you had to walk down a mini hallway and then into the bathroom proper which was long & had a separate shower area to the back The rooms have scant space for computer work And, finally, housekeeping had a terrible habit of "resetting" the air conditioner to settings they preferred. (We prefer the room at a toasty (77ºF) and most day the room temperature was changed to a blizzard like 69º F

Yelp
Not a bad Marriott brand for the price. The caveat was that there was serious jackhammering construction going on daily outside the entrance. Team did a good job of escorting people in and out, but forget trying to sleep in once the construction started. Probably why the great rate for the week. I was disappointed at the restaurant and bar prices. I paid $17 for a glass of beer when waiting for my ice, since they don't have any ice machines. I kicked myself later when I visited a corner store jus a block up and got a 12 pack of suds for that price. Had to request a mini fridge, which did not come with the room. Staff was very nice and brought it up in minutes with no added charge. The coffee machine was different but excellent. I didn't buy a single cup that week as a result, and the maid was nice to give me extra. I would stay again, if same price, as it is conveniently located close to Union square and all the other nice places near there.

Yelp
The hotel couldn't process my business debit card that works everywhere else, including for purchases double the amount of the hold and four times the amount of the room charge. They made me call my bank on check-in, and the bank repeatedly said there was no issue with my card (because there was not). My card still wouldn't work at check out, and the employee told me that perhaps my bank wasn't used to seeing luxury hotel charges. I advised him that I've been using the card at hotels all over the country without issue for five years and left. Putting aside the rudeness and audacity of this comment, the JW Marriott is not a luxury hotel by any stretch of the imagination. I've stayed here before but will never do so again. And I made sure to tell everyone in my group so that our organization will also never use this hotel again.

Yelp
Nice location, clean hotel. Destination fee of $25 includes $25 food credit, cable car tickets, desserts, happy hour etc. Walkable to the cable car, Union square, China town. Note parking is quite pricy ($80) , you can use an app like spot hero to find overnight parking nearby for $50. Service: prompt when asking for things sent to the room. What I didn't like is that I had to make a special request to honor our breakfast benefit as an elite benefit, the lounge was closed and they wanted to just give us points. I'm happy they made good on the breakfast benefit but I had to ask multiple people. Wish there were more water filling stations (none that I saw)

Yelp
The hotel was excellent overall. The staff was very courteous and friendly for the most part and highly efficient. The lobby on the third floor and was comfortable with a bar, restaurant, TVs, and other amenities. The room was spacious with plenty of amenities. The bathroom was modern and well appointed. The quality of the towels and bed linens was good. The room was a bit on the hot side (even with the thermostat turned all the way down), but not uncomfortable. The room had a very nice view of the city as well. There were plenty of outlets. The TV was nice and large and offered internet services (Netflix, etc., if one chose to use them). The room service was prompt. Now for the nits. There was no icemaker on the floors, so one needed to call room service for ice or pick it up from the front desk. The bed was particularly soft. This was not helpful for those of us who suffer from back pain. The parking was a bit absurd ($73 per day, but with in and out privileges).

Yelp
When I arrived at the JW Marriott in San Francisco I realized I had booked the wrong hotel. I had booked Tgw San Francisco Marriott. Since my friends were staying across the street, i wanted to stay at a hotel closer to theirs. Thankfully, Bianca and Anthony helped me so much. They helped me cancel the incorrect booking, (which had been prepaid) and helped me check into the JW Marriott. This hotel is fabulous. The rooms are gorgeous the settings. In the restaurant and bar area are beautiful. But the thing that has stood out to me the most for this stay is how helpful this staff is here. I can't thank everyone enough for such a wonderful, wonderful stay.

Yelp
Somewhat disappointing experience for a JW Marriott. They seem very understaffed and disorganized. We constantly had to send our check back at the restaurant for corrections. The coffee station in the lobby was a mess and frequently empty. The rooms were nice, and the overall look of the hotel was pretty nice as well. I just expected more from the JW Marriott.

Yelp
Great hotel with a prime location in downtown Union Square. From the moment we walked in, we felt welcomed by the staff. Once we got up to our room, it was pure luxury. Well appointed furnishings, and a super comfy bed. Although we did not spend much time at the hotel, we will definitely stay at the JW Marriott on our next trip to San Francisco.

Yelp
This review is just for JW Marriott Room Service. The menu has no prices, so I wasn't sure what to expect. When food arrived and I went to sign the bill I was a bit surprised. $91.03 for a Caesar salad, individual pizza & glass of wine, but I thought that's what I get for not asking. I always get a little nervous with room service when signing the bill - just awkward for me to have the attendant standing there waiting for me to figure out the tip - my personal problem. I knew to just tip on the subtotal, so I did just that. They even had that helpful math calculation to figure out the tip, on the bottom of the receipt. I figured all the extra charges were service charges, SF taxes, etc. Not until I sat down and looked at the bill did I notice they include a 20% gratuity, automatically. So I tipped twice. I know I should have looked at the receipt closer, so lesson learned but it just felt deceitful - like they're hoping for guests like myself. Food was good - not great. $25 for an individual Caesar salad seems a bit outrageous. Only open until 10 pm.

Yelp
Meh... I mean... whatever. This place is nice enough. I wouldn't go out of my way to stay here, but I would stay here again if the price was right.

Yelp
Gorgeous hotel with professional staff, beautiful rooms and amazing showers (I wanted to sleep in it). My only complaint was a strangly spackled mirror. Of course it may have been design choice but it looked like they upgraded the room and forgut the mirror :) And if you eat in the restaurant, try their tuna poke...yumm

Yelp
Antonio checked us in and he was a delight. He understood our needs, being that I also work for another Marriott property. A great rapport was established, and early check fee was offered. The property sits in the heart of San Francisco, easily accessible to Chinatown, uber-able to the Wharf and Golden Gate, and walking distance to the famous stops of San Francisco's Trolley. Upon check-in, they give you 2 one-way tickets for the trolley, best used to take you to the Fisherman's Wharf where you are able to take the Alcatraz Tour. This JW resides in one of the oldest buildings, and architecturally you notice that. The atrium style of this hotel, pours the sunlight through the lobby giving it a bright energy throughout. The lobby is on the 3rd floor where you check-in, where the bar and the restaurant is at. Food in the restaurant was fairly priced having it to be inside the JW, not spectacular--but good. The rooms were clean, and felt safe inside this property, the only thing to keep in mind is that there have no ice-machines on any floor, you will have to order that yourself. Overall, the location and the JW brand was greatly appreciated for this property.

Yelp
The hotel is nice, and the service was good. It is a hotel I would stay in again. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because of the mattress. It was NOT a Marriot mattress. It was extremely hard. We are platinum members of Marriot, so, I know how a Marriot mattress should feel. Also, there was a huge bathroom but only had a large shower. I could have really used a tub and there was room for one in the bathroom. Yes, I know about liability but please have bathtubs or spas in the bathrooms with the shower.

Yelp
Would definitely stay here again! The downfall is that you can hear your neighbors the entire time. The walls don't have very good sound proofing. Champagne upon arrival, a food credit everyday - I think it was $25 or $30, free desserts to sample, two free tickets for the trolly, a snack (didn't try it) and a free bag. I really liked the bathroom- I felt like I was in a vegas hotel bathroom. Nice lighting to get ready. Very convenient place to stay at!

Yelp
I stay here about 10 times a year for travel. The staff get to know you and are very friendly. Rooms are large, clean plus the location in Union Square feels relatively safer than other areas of DTSF. This hotel is old-money nice. It isn't gimmicky like other trendy properties. The rooms aren't the newest, but on extended work stays, they feel cozy. Of course you will have the Karens complaining here. I look forward to my next visit here.

Yelp
Horrible horrible. Just excuses. No ability to staff restaurant, bar. Closures not communicating to guests. Management does nor care. We have.choices of where we stay. Not happy with Marriott!!!

Yelp
When the JW ends up being close to the same price as the Courtyard two blocks away, it becomes a fairly easy decision to stay at the JW instead. Obviously, it's a fairly old hotel, as is basically every other hotel in the city. But the JW has done what it can to modernize the hotel. Lobby is definitely redesigned, with a bar and a restaurant to complete the lobby. It still does have a very odd configuration, as it's one of those hotels where the elevators are in the middle and the rooms are on the surrounding perimeter. Had previously stayed in a hotel like this before, and although it doesn't really detract from the room itself, it is a bit odd as a whole. Anyways, the rooms. Rooms were definitely also remodeled in the pretty recent past, as they are actually fairly nice. Beds are comfortable and a nice marble counters for the TV area. Even though the room is 360 square feet, they make the most of it. Best part of the rooms for me are the very clearly redesigned bathrooms, which are actually fairly spacious and include a large walk-in shower (with a very confusing handle system). Would honestly come back to the JW just for the bathroom, it's pretty nice. Staff here is fantastic here. I actually had a pricing error when I was trying to modify one of my reservations which for some reason adjusted my rate upwards. After lots of back and forth, the manager herself e-mailed me to confirm everything would be good once I checked in. And that's exactly happened! Really appreciate the dedication to good customer service. Aside from that, I usually get all my requests handled pretty quickly, as I would expect from any hotel of this elite caliber. Location is about as prime as you can get if Union Square is your go-to spot since it has the majority of the city's shopping area. Also, I am fairly biased, but it is two blocks away from my favorite burger place in the world...so there's that too. Valet parking is $66. I don't live in NorCal anymore, but god damn that is some STEEP parking. Basically told all my friends that are visiting to park at Sutter-Stockton Garage, that is way too obscene of a cost. Not like the rest of the hotels in the city are any better. Bottom line, the JW does show its age a bit, but I've stayed here twice and enjoyed it both times. Definitely is my go-to hotel from now on when I visit the city.

Yelp
Restaurant food is awful! Burger $25, was overcooked when I ordered medium rare. They took it back, 20 mins later, I got a new one. Lettuce spoiled (see pic). Was told complimentary dessert and then charged $12 for crème brûlée (which was the only thing that tasted good). Eventually removed from bill but service so slow! One server in the restaurant! I ran out of wine and waited forever because there was no one to ask!! Really sad to see a Marriott like this! I would have done better at McDonalds!! $69 bill, not good food or service.

Yelp
The hotel is in a good location, close to union square. I was pleasantly surprised how comfortable and clean the room was. It wasn't big but we had enough space for one night. They also had to bring up a rollaway bed for my daughter and it came up quickly and they set it all up. The room came with nice thick robes to lounge around in. I really liked our city view, it was beautiful at sunset. The lobby staff were super friendly and helpful. It was a nice refreshing entrance after walking all day. I could say the hotel is walking distance from everything since we walked to fisherman's warf, Lombard street, China town and a couple restaurants. It IS walking distance if you don't mind hills and getting in 20,000 + steps in San Francisco. China town is really close though. All in all it was a nice comfortable, relaxing hotel stay for our one night.

Yelp
Great location, excellent bell service and friendly staff. It's walkable to many places and central enough to catch an Uber from there.

Yelp
Great location Pros 1) location 2) delicious restaurant on the 3rd floor 3) friendly staff Cons- 1) very loud neighborhood 2) poor bedding 3) pricey The stay was significant. 5 nights. Upside are the Covid Protocols Downside is the lack of service overall. No room service Only dining in third floor restaurant- Staff there can be a bit elusive. Yet, the food was consistently delicious. The hotel felt like a ghost town-

Yelp
I'm glad to stayed last night at JW Marriot. I'm impressed nice upgrade modern inside hotel and the room. This hotel is close to Union Square, great location for travelers and anyone like shopping. The room wasn't big but I was pleasantly suprised how comfortable and clean the room was. The staffs follow protocol like wearing masks, polite, and hand sanitizer in the front and elevators. Takling about valet parking is pricey but quick service. The hotel is walkinh distance from fisherman's wharf, Lombard street, china town, and some restaurants. I can say it's really soothing, relaxing stay for our one night. Highly recommend if you are travel in San Francisco.

Yelp
Very reliable and conveniently located hotel. Excellent front desk and dining staff. Bonvoy status regularly recognized. Rooms are comfortable but water pressure in the showers is consistently poor. Open air hallways and glad elevators are not the best for those with a fear of heights! The 24/7 gym is tiny and usually packed in the mornings. Street noise can sometimes be an issue but generally not an issue.

Yelp
Not a good ambiance, actually disgusting, and service is REALLY really bad. We booked 2 connecting suits on upper level which weren't connected.... Just a Heads-up the valet parking was about $90.00. The front desk took 30 minutes to check us in which was very annoying after 7 hours of driving and made us wait for the second room extra one hour so our rooms were ready after 5:00 pm The hotel is not clean, doesn't have friendly personal, and lacks good service. Stay away.

Yelp
I'm just so disappointed in this hotel. This is supposed to be a Cat 7 but it honestly felt like a Cat 5. Having stayed at a number of hotels in the bay area (Parc 55, Four seasons, Hilton Union Square, small boutiques) I'm just floored at how little Marriott is trying. The rooms are just okay, nothing special. Mine actually had pink mold in the shower because it hadn't been cleaned properly during covid. I either had to deal with it or switch to a different smaller room, even offered to scrub it myself but they just to preferred to bring in someone the next day. Lobby staff is basically non existent good luck finding them. Front door staff was fantastic though and always welcoming, those guys were on point. They say Level III is open but not really.

Yelp
July 20 to July 22, 2021 A beautiful hotel which is very well maintained - - the common areas and the room (1301) were in great condition. All the employees (front desk, housekeeping, valet, etc.) were friendly and professional. Highly recommended.
