Philly’s Best Hibachi and Japanese Steakhouses | Eater Philly

Kabuki Sushi Review - Center City - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"During a recent late-lunch run, the cashier at Kabuki Sushi told me, “See you tomorrow! You’re here every day!” I immediately thought “Now she knows she has me. I’m Reek to her Ramsay Bolton.” Only without the torturous relationship, of course. But she was right, I was basically at this spot near the Convention Center every day. And with all of the restrictions in town, I’ll take small victories where I can find them - which for me means biting into a fresh avocado peanut roll and pouring heaps of ginger dressing on their house salad. I don’t know if it’s the wasabi that makes me tear up when eating it, or if it’s the comfort of a good meal, but each bite keeps me coming back for more, literally." - Candis R. McLean

Overall: below average sushi, only meets satisfactory standards. I ordered several rolls and they were falling apart. The seaweed did not seem fresh as it was soggy. The shrimp tempura roll I had still had shells in it. Some of my salmon avocado rolls barely had any avocado in it. Price: about $6-$7 rolls, I would say over priced for the quality here Service: staff was standard, no complaints. I had to seat myself but perhaps it was due to understaffing. Not a big issue though.

Google
worst experience i have ever had. just drove 16 hours from florida and they had great reviews. the server was very rude from the start was not friendly. we ordered our food and we didn’t like it and she kept insisting that all the other customers liked it and that it was fresh. she didn’t offer to remake our food or help at all really. she called her manager on the phone and he argued with us saying we must pay for food we did not eat. she then got our debit cards confused and ended up charging me 2 different prices which she said she refunded one but never did. i would not recommend this place at all. below are photos before & after. i ate almost nothing!

Google
LOVE THIS PLACE. I just was reading some of the poor reviews, and they are way too harsh and too critical. As a repeat customer, I have never had a bad experience here, the sushi is great quality, and the staff is incredibly friendly. I order the lunch special at least once a month here. It is always on time with the order time. Never late. And the price is completely reasonable. I will continue to order sushi from this place. I usually get spicy salmon and tuna, and shrimp tempura. These rolls turn out great. I hope this clears the air on some of the bad reviews. I really love this place.

Google
I see some mixed reviews but I had a great experience. The staff was very nice, the sushi was fresh and DELICIOUS, I really had no complaints. I definitely will come back next time I’m in Philly.

Google
Nice sushi dinner after Philly Flower Show. Got California entree and Tuna & Salmon entree. Would def come back to try their special sushi rolls like 76ers and Trust the Process.

Google
Excellent sushi at a great price. Fast service Dining room is a little small, 6-8 tables or so. BYOB

Google
Really great lunch prices but the rolls were poorly made, I was unable to pick the pieces up with chop sticks because they would immediately fall apart. I had 2 rolls with salmon in it and it tasted "fishy" with almost no flavor which leads me to think they are using lower quality fish. The avocado was very ripe, over ripe, and brown in some spots. The California roll was okay. I also ordered a side of spicy mayo which was very sweet with a small after taste of spicy. If you are okay with mid grade quality sushi, the prices are not bad at all. When looking through my ginger salad (undressed) I noticed it was literally dripping water and there was brown stuff on the lettuce. The next piece I picked up had a hair on it.

Google
I took my parents out to Kabuki Sushi for dinner last night. Food was great, ordered Kabuki Love Boat because we are Sushi and Sashimi lover. My wife loved the salmon, its super fresh! Location is perfect, just couple mins walk from Chinatown, i was able to visit Chinatown for grocery shopping and walk to the restaurant for dinner. Great service, will definitely visit back again!!!

Yelp
Good service, good sushi overall. The soup and salad were great, with a lot of flavor. Worth a stop.

Yelp
There are a bajillion sushi places in the city so I'm trying all of them. This one is hidden on the corner of the alley. Had the lunch special and it's overall okay. Wouldn't try to come back but nothing partcularly negative

Yelp
I ordered some sushi to go, the quality was average, nothing will blow your mind. It's convenient.

Yelp
I'm a sushi lover, and this place blew me away! The sushi was incredibly fresh, and the flavors were out of this world. The staff was super friendly and made me feel right at home. I can't wait to come back for more!"

Yelp
Nice little sushi spot around the corner from the convention center and reading terminal market. They had a handful of tables so it's definitely not 'to go only' though they were doing a brisk to go business. I had a rainbow roll and two tuna avocado rolls. I added roe to both. Quite tasty. My only slight criticism is that i feel very certain the tuna avocado rolls were pre-made. This was doubly confirmed when I got an additional one to go and it was clearly fresher and the ingredients looked different.

Yelp
How cute is this sashimi meal? There's a tree on the plate!!! So pretty AND more importantly so delicious!!! It came with a soup and a salad and it was quite a good meal. Also ordered a seaweed salad, a tuna avocado roll, and a sweet potato roll (my first time eating a sweet potato roll!). All delicious. I've come by this sushi place several times but never popped in til today and I'm glad I did!!

Yelp
I have past this sushi shop so often so I thought it was high time to eat there. The inside is very nice and warming. I sat down and got the menu. Ended up ordering the Salmon Maki Dinner. It included a salad and a miso soup. The salad and miso soup was very good. I have very mixed feelings about the sushi at this place however. It was not the best sushi I have ever tried however I really like how there was a lot of salmon/no rice. The seaweed wrap tasted a bit weird to me. Overall I rank this place a 3/5

Yelp
We popped in here our first night in Philly for dinner. Food was just okay, but nothing to get excited about. This spot was about 1 to 2 blocks from our hotel. Quite small and wasn't busy either. There was another couple dining when we arrived. I would've took off another star, for the cups of water that was served. They were not clean. The cups looked like they were probably swished in water and not throughly cleaned with soap and water. I wish I asked for a bottled beverage instead.

Yelp
I was really craving some sushi recently and I needed to find a lunch place for a work meeting. I came across Kabuki and I was glad I did! I got a shrimp and vegetable tempura lunch bento box and it was delicious! And it was a large portion! It came with white rice, a California roll, a few pork dumplings, 2 shrimp tempuras and a few vegetable tempuras. I couldn't even finish it all but I wanted to! Everyone loved their meal choices, as well! One of the best sushi places I have been to.

Yelp
Glad to see this restaurant is still around. The last time I came here was in 2015, but I found myself in Philly again so I decided to give this place another try since I was near the convention center and didn't want to venture too far since it was late. I ordered the red mask roll ($15.95) since the waitress mentioned it was one of the more popular rolls and the sashimi salad ($9.95). The roll tasted good, no complaints. However, the salad was disappointing. The bottom of the takeout container for the salad had a pool of water, which on the positive side means they washed the lettuce lol, but on the negative side means the salad with the dressing ended up tasting watered down. The salad was also just iceberg lettuce, a couple of pieces of tomato and cucumber, and a few pieces of fish. I guess I was just expecting more. The service was great though.

Yelp
Looks like this place has gone through some renovation and reopened. I ordered delivery and it came very fast and the sushi was very good. I'd definitely come back.

Yelp
Pick up was super quick which I really appreciate. However as I was beginning to enjoy my spicy maki combo I found a piece of hair in my sushi. :(

Yelp
At first glance, great prices for lunch specials and common sushi. The rolls come stuffed with ingredients, but the quality of the fish was quite questionable. Super fatty, odd textured salmon rolls as well as super fishy yellowtail. The lunch special comes with a soup or salad though, and that's a deal you can't beat for 13 bucks or so! Favorite roll was either the spicy white tuna of the eel avocado. The salmon I probably wouldn't get again, just because the quality was odd.

Donna L.

Yelp
The food was delicious and fresh! The service was fast and courteous, it was busy at lunch time but the service handled it very well. The ambiance of the restaurant was clean and simple, which I love in a restaurant. I highly recommend Kabuki for lunch or dinner.

Michael K.

Yelp
Awesome food. Awesome service. As consistent as it comes. One of best sushi spots in PHL.

Noelle T.

Yelp
The best sushi lunch special in the entire city! Excellent quality! Excellent taste/freshness in center city and now in cherry hill delicious!! Service - the girls are kind of snarky but probably because of cheap tippers. Excellent!

Yelp
I was really excited to go here. I was craving sushi all day and finally gave in. The location of this place is pretty good. It's in center city and close to reading terminal market, the shopping area, as well as Chinatown and I liked that. In regards to service, me and my lady had to seat ourselves. There was an individual there who could have sat us down but they didn't. That lost points with me! The menu looked pretty comprehensive and offered much variety. I ordered 3 rolls: yellow-tail scallion roll, spicy baby lobster, and Eel avocado. I wasn't honestly over the moon about it. I've had much better sushi before. The sushi kept falling apart ever other time I went to grab another piece. Additionally, the spicy baby lobster didn't really taste like a spicy baby lobster. Would I come back here? Probably not. I felt like what I paid for didn't represent the quality of the sushi I had. I've paid less for better quality sushi. It looked nice but that's pretty much it.

Yelp
Wait was way too long for a not complex order, people that came after us got their orders first. The Guy working in the back dropped our order in front of us and still had the nerve to package it for us to take. If I could give them zero stars, i would.

Yelp
After three days of working extra long hours and eating nothing but hotel food, anything different would have a been good. Luckily this sisig I joint was right down the street. And crushed me a delicious Godzilla roll, spicy lobster roll, a crab meat roll, and some pork gyros. Along with a bottle of cherry wine from the spirits store. The sushi was tasty and reasonably priced. As my wife says "happy tummy"

Yelp
Conveniently located next to a bunch of hotels in the city center, but very unappetizing food. Ordered the hibachi steak bento box and everything tasted a little off. The California roll had a unique taste to it, the steak (which there wasn't hardly any of.. 3oz, maybe) was bland and the salad had a freezer burn taste to it. The white rice was good though!
google avatar

Yelp
It was my first time trying this place via delivery. I ordered the Mango dragon roll which is shrimp tempura, mango with eel sauce. It was very tasty but the portion was so small for $14.95! I feel it was missing 5 more pieces for a speciality roll. I probably would go in person to try their lunch special once restuarants open up in Philly during Covid.
google avatar

Yelp
Tiny but mighty sushi joint within close walking distance to the Convention center. I needed to quickly, and I mean quickly step out to grab a bite between sessions and they were just what the afternoon ordered. I just got some California Rolls with eel sauce. They were yummy and fresh, but also and most importantly, lightening fast! I was super impressed and appreciated their urgency because I didn't want to be late for the next session. I imagine they get pretty busy during more common meal times, but it was nice to be the only one in the small shop. There's a big market near the convention center with a ton of options that would've been more convenient, but I prefer Kabuki because it's way healthier than any of the options inside of the market.

Yelp
The restaurant is pretty small, and there isn't much seating. I ordered some takeout sushi via the Ritual app, and I included a note for them to add spicy mayo on the side. For whatever reason, they informed me that they couldn't add spicy mayo to my order, so I would have to purchase it separately, then wouldn't let me use my credit card because I didn't reach the minimum (I didn't bring cash because I ordered it and pre-paid before I came). The guy at the counter was pretty adamant about it and not very friendly when I came in. The sushi was okay - not the best I've had, but it was solid. I only ordered vegetable rolls, and they were pretty average. The main reason I came in was a discount I had via the app, but I probably would not come here again and pay full prices.

Yelp
I had a craving for sushi while in Philly so I decided to get take-out from here (thanks to Yelp) for our Sunday night family dinner. Do keep in mind that parking can be a pain because it is located in Center City and on a block with no stopping on both sides. You have to park about 2 blocks away if you are choosing to dine in or have your other half put their emergency hazard lights on while you run in. We ordered the pork gyoza, chicken teriyaki entrée, eel avocado/ cucumber rolls, the godzilla and spicy girl roll. The food was ready to pick up in a fairly quick time (about 25 minutes). All the workers were very nice and professional and the food tasted fairly good, fish was fresh but the eel rolls were sorta tiny. Price was in line with a standard sushi restaurant so you won't go broke eating here for dinner like what happened to us in Manhattan (JK!). It is a small and cozy spot, which is good for an adult date night if that's what you prefer but not really recommended for large parties and not quite family friendly either:]

Yelp
I love sushi, really I do. And anytime there's a place to get sushi when I'm on the road away from home, I will give it a try. Tonight I read a lot of the yelp reviews for the various sushi places around the Philadelphia convention center and I decided to give Kabuki a try. I liked that it was a very short walk from the Marriott hotels. The place was very clean and my female server was friendly. She also came over to refill my green tea without me asking her to. Now maybe it's a Philadelphia thing, but in just about all of the sushi places in New Jersey, they'll give you hot green tea for free. Here it's $1.50. The tea also tasted very floral, which was different than most of the green teas I've had at sushi restaurants. However, the food here is much smaller than what I've been used to in other sushi places. The miso soup was very watered-down and the salad was small. I ordered the sushi deluxe meal which came with miso soup and salad. The spicy tuna rolls are REALLY small. No, I'm not a sushi connoisseur, but I'd like to think that each sushi roll should have a minimum diameter larger the size of a US quarter. Some of these rolls had a diameter less than a nickel. I even added a picture of my thumb next to one of the rolls. And I have to admit it, I don't have huge hands. My suggestion is to make the rolls a little bigger and offer free green tea. Will I be back here during my four day stay in the city, probably not. A lot of places in NJ with similarly-priced sushi also offer slices of orange, melon or gum/candy when they present you with the bill to cleanse your palate, but not here.
google avatar

Yelp
No frills but not particularly tasty either. Reminds me of grocery store sushi. No alcohol. Service was good. We were the only people in there on a Friday night...
google avatar

Yelp
In town for business trip, this small sushi restaurant was right next to our hotel. Their menu has a lot of varieties, and we only had chance to try a few for one meal. Chicken Katsu Benton was really good, I like the quality of how the meat been fried, it seems they do change the oil from the fryer frequently, so that keeps everything to have the nice golden color. The miso soup, seaweed was undercooked, soup was not hot (or not heat up to the right temperature). The Shrimp and Vegetable Udon, soup was a bit plain so it wasn't to our level of like. The Salmon Skin Hand Roll is pretty good, but I would suggest the chef to heat the seaweed paper a bit longer, so the skin doesn't get wet so fast while customers are eating. Our over all experienced, this place can be better, and we will definitely come back to try more sushi to see how they taste.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! The Fantasy roll was an awesome roll if you like a variety of protein. I really enjoyed the eel, salmon, and tuna together. The Inaka roll was my favorite, I loved the tropical flavor with the spices and fresh fish. The New York was another hit with multiple proteins in one roll. I have to say, the wasabi sauce on top really amps up the flavor in the best way. The was some of the best sushi I've ever had and I've lived in Japan and all over southeast Asian, eaten sushi in Vegas, Chicago, NC, Cali, all over. Definitely stop in this quaint sushi shop if you want outstanding service and delicious food.

Yelp
Zero stars would be more appropriate. Bad food & service. Tofu agadashi tasted like it had been frozen, waitress mocked me when I sent it back. Sushi rolls were off, paid for meal without eating it

Yelp
It was a day of grueling conference. My head was saturated with all new info, it was knowledge overload. I was too tired to have dinner. I was looking for a sushi place with a record of good standing. I found this one within a block from our hotel. It was a nice quiet restaurant. Very simple decoration but clean. I made a reservation online but got there early. The menu had relative good number of items. The service of food delivery to the table was fast. The seafood miso soup may needs more seafood . The shrimp shumai was average. The crazy Friday Roll was ok. I liked to have more spicy tuna inside. The sitting arrangement looked little congested, probably to accommodate more people inside. Overall, I was happy with the service and taste of the food. By the time I left the place, my stomach was full and my headache was gone.
google avatar

Angie L.

Yelp
came for lunch and honestly it's just solid sushi. expect to pay about $30/pp to be decently full. the marriott roll and i think fantasy (?) are quite good. nothing super special, but prices are solid, service is good, and the fish tasted fresh when I went.
google avatar

Yelp
A decent find next to the courthouse. Went here for lunch when I was given an hour break from my jury duty. They had a variety of different lunch specials including Bento boxes and three roll combos. I had the shrimp bento box which was presented well. It was served with miso soup and came with a California roll as well as pork shumai. I wish they specified that the shumai was shrimp as it usually is since I don't eat pork, but it was also partly my fault since I should have asked rather than assumed. The service was quick which I appreciated and after I was done with my meal. I lingered longer and had the melon bubble teaZ! It was good.

Yelp
This odd a good place to get quick take out sushi. Visiting here from Texas. Stopped in here more than once while working in Philly Southside. Had several different rolls and all were good.
google avatar

Nicole P.

Yelp
On Christmas I ordered $100 worth of food from here. I specifically ordered multiple cucumber rolls for the fact there was no rice and it should've been gluten free. I got it and it was a completely different roll than pictured - so that family member tried to get off the rice but really didn't eat because when I called the restaurant and told them they told me to ask grub hub for a refund. Umm - I just moved here and now they've not only lost my family and me, but any type of recommendation for this restaurant- especially if looking for customer service. How disappointing. In my picture it shows what I thought I ordered and then what I actually received.
google avatar

Natalie S.

Yelp
I was craving sushi and Kabuki Sushi was the only Asian option on Grubhub that didn't have a ridiculously high delivery fee. I'm so glad I tried Kabuki! This will be my go-to delivery spot for sushi from now on. I ordered a Spicy Tuna and Philly Roll, both were pretty good. I also ordered a Strawberry Bubble Tea which was tasty. I'm a big fan of bubble tea so I'm glad they offered it along with different flavor options. They have other options besides sushi. Prices are reasonable. Giving this 4 stars because I can't comment on the service since I ordered delivery. I look forward to trying them again in the future.
google avatar

Djaz I.

Yelp
We ordered a sushi meal, a couple of hand rolls and rolls, chicken katsu, 3 bubble teas, and edamame. Overall tasty bubble tea, good katsu, and disappointing sushi. The sushi was small and flimsy. Two rolls were supposed to be hand rolls and came as regular rolls instead. And the sushi meal had a note for no crab, eel, or panko for someone gluten free. Well, the spicy roll was full of panko and couldn't be eaten. We ordered a good amount of food and paid premium prices for sushi and it really wasn't worth it. If you can't eat gluten, I wouldn't trust this place.
google avatar

Suzanne G.

Yelp
Wasn't disappointed ! Based on all the reviews I ordered the Marriott Roll. Very well prepared and super fresh ! Also got coffee bubble tea which was refreshing. Had ordered shrimp and vegetable tempura appetizer that never arrived. Our server said they were really busy and it got lost amongst take out orders. If you're in City Center this is a nice little sushi spot.
google avatar

Eryka S.

Yelp
Really dislike this Sushi. Poorly made. Barely had fish, instead, had a bunch of gooey thing inside with a tiny piece of fish. Tasteless, which is a sham.
google avatar

Leah L.

Yelp
Ordered through an app for pick up during lunch They wanted to charge $3.00 additional to deep fry my roll, I don't care if I was a millionaire I wouldn't pay $3.00 to deep fry any sushi roll that is already $17.00. So for they they have lost a customer and I'm also letting everyone know not to ask to deep fry your roll.
google avatar

Bethany L.

Yelp
Not the greatest sushi and asian I've had--but definitely a good option. They had a great bento box lunch special that came with hibachi shrimp, rice, miso soup, a California roll, and shrimp shumai dumplings. It was definitely a good deal that came with a lot of food! However, I did get tuna sashimi and the tuna wasn't the greatest; great portion size, but the tuna quality could have been bitter. It was a small place and service was relatively fast, but I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to go again.
google avatar

Jaclyn M.

Yelp
Delivered fast, and neat. The rolls look small, but very filling. Rolls did not fall apart as I ate them. Also got spring rolls but no photos were taken. Would order again.

Yelp
I took 2 trips to Kabuki for takeout this week since they were right next to my hotel. Good sashimi and nigiri, expensive, I would have expected the staff and management to be more "on-the-ball" given the higher pricepoint they are competing at, but goooooood sashimi and nigiri. Key Takeaways: - Sashimi and Nigiri here were very fresh and very tasty - Maki was not-so-fresh and I would expect more from a smallish serving of food with a relatively high price-point - Prep was fast, both of my orders took less than 15 minutes (well, they forgot a roll the second time, but the rest of the order was prepared in 15 minutes.) - Professionalism was not the highest. - Best soy sauce I've tasted!!! I think they may add sugar and/or a few flavorings to big storebought bulk jugs of soy sauce (secret recipe?) Night 1 Order: Sushi and Sashimi Combo ($24.95), Tuna Roll ($4.95) Night 2 Order: Sushi and Sashimi Combo (Replaced the Miso Soup with a second Ginger Salad for an upcharge ($25.95), Alaska Roll ($5.25)

Yelp
My boyfriend and I were joined by his college friends to both celebrate his birthday and for me to load up on sushi before the marathon. Photos on here looked great and the prices we saw were the best of the many sushi places we considered so we picked Kabuki. While the sushi tasted ok, the service was lackluster, the prices several dollars higher and the pieces smaller than my tiny pinky. 2.5 stars. I ordered the salmon and tuna dinner. I saw a photo of this meal on yelp and the pieces looked decent and the roll reasonable. The price in the restaurant was 2 dollars more and the sushi was the smallest I've ever seen. I'm a tiny woman but if the fish is smaller than my pinky you're not doing it right. The salmon avocado roll was also small but luckily had a good fish to avocado ratio. The rice was unseasoned under the sushi. The roll's nori also tasted off. The fish itself tasted great. A friend got the chicken teriyaki and it was a decent size. My boyfriend and his other friend got special rolls that apparently were tasty but again super tiny portions. No one at my table complained about the taste...just the size. Also they all ordered sodas which not only came in cans but charged 2.25 per can. I was still hungry so I had to order more food. Because of the marathon, I wanted to stick to just tuna and salmon. I asked our waitress if I could get a sushi appetizer, which already came with a piece of tuna and salmon, if the other 3 pieces could be a mix of tuna and salmon. She rudely scoffed at such a proposal and told me I'd have to buy pieces a la cart which were super pricey here. Her service the whole time was unfriendly and unresponsive and it took over 20 minutes to get my extra 2 rolls I had to order due to their terribly small pieces of sushi. While I can recommend their fish I cannot recommend this place for value or friendly service. We will try another sushi place next time we go to Philly.

Yelp
Would give 0 stars if possible. Took a reservation on Yelp for 6:30 PM for 6 people. Received a text confirmation for reservation which I then confirmed again. Showed up with clients and no tables available and unable to rectify situation at all. If they use yelp for reservations and reviews should they not utilize the service to serve clients who book with them???

Yelp
Amazing sushi , fresh , fast. I am just in Philadelphia for work and I do not know what to get here or eat here. I looked up sushi places on yelp and saw this one. I made a reservation and was not let down. This is a great , small cozy place with amazing sushi ! I definitely recommend it !

Yelp
My boss and I stopped in here for a quick lunch. We were really impressed with the sushi and the staff. Mango & Avocado Salad - so refreshing! Highly recommend. Great portion too. At least half an avocado and half a mango! The ginger sesame dressing is reallllllly good! Marriott Roll - the waitress recommended this as I was torn between it and the New York Roll. I had it wrapped in cucumber versus rice for $5 upcharge. It was huge and so delicious. I literally ate all of it which I never can do. Highly recommend! Wasabi Sauce - JUST TRY IT! I promise you'll love it coming from a huge sauce lover.

Yelp
My favorite place in Philadelphia to get sushi! I usually order my favorite rolls here -- salmon avocado roll, spicy tuna roll, & spider roll. All of which are extremely tasty and contain generous amounts of protein (and not filled with excessive rice). I have also tried the bento box specials here which are so delicious and filling. I love that it comes with so much! The bento box includes a portion of the selected entree (I usually get the chicken teriyaki), shu mai, California roll, and a soup/salad. There is so much variety my taste buds tingle with happiness at all the flavors. Not to mention the customer service is always on their A-game here. I have ordered take out delivery and eaten inside the restaurant and both are great experiences. The delivery is always very quick! There used to be this delivery boy I thought was really cute, but I haven't seen him deliver in awhile. Regardless, the food is still great!

Yelp
This sushi place is fast! If you're looking for a quick meal we ate our sushi in 13 minutes! Crazy fast. We got the miso soup and avocado mango salad. The mangos were so fresh and the avocado ripe as can be. Then we got some sushi. The kabuki roll was good. Lots of flavor and very tasty. The New York was hands down our favorite. Lots of spicy tuna on the inside then raw tuna on top. So delicious. Highly recommend. The sexy lady roll leaves some to be desired. Ahi tuna was good but flavor was a lacking something. Philadelphia roll was good. Standard fair. Would highly recommend if you're on a crunch for time and need to move on quickly. Came in at 8:30 on a Saturday and it was practically empty.
