Best New Restaurants in Queens, July 2025: According to Eater Editors | Eater NY

"Kabuli Grill in Astoria is hedging its big bet on a tough location, with lots of closings on the two-block commercial stretch over the past several years. It’s split into two separate sections for takeout and dine-in. The latter is thoughtfully decorated with a three-dimensional geometric design inlay on the wall. The food is solid: The leek bolani (flatbread) is stuffed with fresh greens, and the eggplant borani features thick slices of eggplant in a tomato sauce with garlic yogurt and lots of herbs. They both come with a cilantro chutney with a spicy kick." - Caroline Shin

Kabuli Grill is hands down one of the best spots in Astoria for authentic Afghan food. Everything I tried was absolutely delicious! The Mango Lassi was refreshing and perfectly sweet, and the Strawberry Lemonade was so fresh and tangy. I started with the Mantu (steamed dumplings) and Afghan Samosas, both packed with flavor, and the Bolani Kachaloo was a must-try — crispy, savory, and so satisfying. For the main meal, I ordered Family Pack #1, which came with 5 skewers of mixed kebabs. Every single skewer was juicy, tender, and seasoned to perfection. You can really taste the love and authenticity in every bite. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the food makes you feel like you’re eating a home-cooked Afghan meal. If you’re in Astoria, this is a spot you don’t want to miss. There’s also a huge event space in the back. Come hungry and with upcoming events to plan because you’ll definitely leave happy! 🌿🇦🇫

The food was delicious. We had the Ashtak, Burani Bajan, and Bolanie Kadu to start. The flavors were amazing. For the main course we got the Lamb Tikka Kebab and the Lamb Qorma. Will definitely be going back!

Went in on a cold winter day not knowing much about Afghani cuisine but the menus were very informative (and there’s some overlap with other Middle Eastern cuisines). I tried the Dough, which is a delicious yogurt drink I think would be perfect on a hot day. The lentil soup, hummus, and beef dumplings were delicious. I loved that the lentil soup had cooked mint in it, which was new to me. The server and manager were so sweet.

My new favorite place for lunch or dinner. I always get the chicken quesadilla and the afghan samosas. The quesadilla is one of the best I've ever had and the samosas are always warm crispy and delicious. The atmosphere is also very nice and they are always playing calming music ranging from middle eastern tunes to relaxing jazz. The staff is also very polite and professional. Whenever i'm in the area this is my go to restaurant.

Absolutely loved this Afghani restaurant! The kabobs were tender, the rice was perfectly seasoned, and the staff was warm and welcoming. Will definitely be coming back.

In the heart of Astoria, there’s a secret treasure for kebab lovers — Kabuli Grill. Open late into the night, it’s the perfect spot when cravings hit. Their family plate brings the real magic: juicy chicken, flavorful beef, and tender kebabs served over soft rice. Add to that a cozy setting, elegant décor, and warm hospitality — you’ll feel both full and at home. If you love kebabs, this place is a must on your NYC food journey!

Google
I would not recommend this place. I should have read the reviews beforehand because they were accurate. I called ahead to ask about the Kabuli Chicken Kebab and was told it came with five pieces of chicken thigh. When I got home, there were only four pieces, and they were clearly not chicken thigh—thigh pieces are much larger. On top of that, I found a long hair in my food, which definitely wasn’t mine since my hair is short. Overall, very disappointing experience. I should have stuck with Sami’s Kebab House down the block, which has better quality food and much larger portions.

There was nice variety of food and which I got the beef dumplings for an appetizer then got mixed grill kebabs with lamb chops, raisin rice and salad. The food was delicious and very satisfying. They were so nice and the decor was beautiful!!

Yelp
I live in Maryland we don't have A lot of options with authentic Afghan food so I usually travel with my husband to Virginia and New York for good food Of course we look at reviews to go to a new place we found Kabuli grill The restaurant was so beautiful very nicely decorated so we thought the prices must be really high but normally when it comes to food we don't mind paying more when we looked at the menu we were surprised the prices were reasonable when our food arrived everything was cooked to perfection the service was excellent the owner came by with a complementary Tea and asked us if everything was served well which is unusual usually restaurants don't do that I am from Afghanistan and of course I know how to cook but sometimes I don't feel like doing the hard work so I go out and look for the best restaurants I am so glad I found kabuli grill It is worth traveling for so I highly recommend this place I am looking forward to going there again
