"The quality and craftsmanship of the omakase at the intimate, fairly upscale Kakurega in Flushing is on par with that offered by well-known Manhattan restaurants. Kakurega’s omakase offers three price points: $98 for 14 courses, including four appetizers, eight pieces of sushi, miso soup, and a dessert; $138 for 17 courses, including five appetizers, nine pieces of sushi, a handroll, miso soup, and a dessert; and $168 for 16 courses, including six appetizers, eight premium pieces of sushi, miso soup and a dessert. There are two seatings nightly, at 6:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. The sushi bar seats 13, and there are also three small tables with four seats each and two larger tables with eight seats each." - Lorelei Yang

Kakurega hits it out of the park in every category. From the wide variety of fresh fish and seafood to the personable service, this is a killer spot for a date (or just to spoil yourself). They have a nice selection of sake, Suntory on draft and two omakase offerings. Oh yeah, and the wall behind the counter is covered in animatronic flower lights… pretty cool.

Recently just opened again, price is fair and food is great.

We had a really special night in this intimate spot. I can definitely see this restaurant being a great restaurant to become a regular. Everything is very sourced and high quality. The delicate portions were perfect for us. Service was just enough but not too intrusive. Minimal look on the sushi counter. Very recommended to order a few dishes at a time and just enjoy slowly.

We really enjoyed the food and the service was amazing! We had a yuzu drink on the house and we're served hot tea which was nice. For me, omakase is about the experience and and the variety of tastes. The reason I gave a 4 star instead of a 5 was because almost every piece of fish that we were served had a small wasabi piece between the rice and fish and topped with a brush of some kind of sauce. So even though all the fish were different and tasted different on their own, when we were served the sushi, all of them sort of tasted similar to me. I also couldn't hear the chef tell us what fish we were eating because it was a bit loud and the chef spoke quietly with a mask on. I appreciate the mask and the screen in front of me, of course, but part of the experience is being able to know what I'm eating. With all of this said, I believe they served super fresh and super high quality fish for the price. Would recommend!

I've always wanted to try Omakase. It's the type of meal where you leave everything up to the chef. Most restaurants that offer this type of service are situated in Manhattan, but I found a hidden gem right in Flushing to take my wife out to. The restaurant is located underground, when you enter, you have to go downstairs. When we got there, we were the only ones there, but a reservation could be handy, just in case. Between the omakase offerings, there were three tiers. I picked the top tier one, wanting to make most out of the experience. My wife and I also opted in for the sake tasting add on. Slowly, one by one, the chef gave us our order. From appetizer, to sushi, soup, and dessert. The experience of sitting at a sushi bar and witnessing the sushi come to life from start to finish was truly something else. Eating here gets really expensive, so prepare yourself. There is a low tier omakase that they offer, but only if you're there early.

We went for early bird omakase which is $58. It comes with one appetizer and eight piece of Nigiri sushi. Sushi was good but the sushi rice was bit small for me. The portion was not enough for me so I had to order some more roll and nigiri. Food quality is all good but the price is a little bit high. We paid $130 per person.

Google
Definitely not bad, and all the ingredients were super fresh and service was top notch. Although I felt it was a came up a little short for the price point and was expecting more. I was especially disappointed that Uni wasn't part of the $170 Omakase experience.

Yelp
I've heard great things about Kakurega, but it was my first time trying last week. It definitely lived up to the stellar reviews! The staff was friendly and attentive, and they were very accommodating of my shellfish allergy. The food was also very tasty. Aside from the nigiris, I especially loved the chawanmushi and the matcha dessert. I would definitely go back for the ambiance, service, and the food.

Yelp
The sushi and preparations were not bad. Everything tasted fresh (but also not particular wow-ing). What Kakurega really lacks is the fun experience that I am looking for with omakase - especially at this price point. At $135 I expect some interaction and banter from the chef or at least some clear descriptions of what I've been handed! Instead there is a physical separation from the chef, detracting from the omakase experience. Because of this clear wall, it was very difficult to hear the chef and I couldn't even catch many of the names of what I was eating. Unless you must have some omakase in Flushing, I'd recommend saving some money and enjoying one of the many $50-100 range omakase in Manhattan.

Yelp
Stumbled on this by accident, and decided to give it a chance. Quiet and homey, yet elegant atmosphere. Service is good. Omakase is a good value compared to other places, especially for imported seafood. I got the chawanmushi (steamed egg) and the Chirashi. Great chawanmushi, it's soft delicate and savory. They added truffle to it as an extra bonus, it came topped with a little scallop. I recommend getting it if you're a fan of homemade flavors tasting high end. Also very, very good chirashi don. Fish was fresh and tasty. Presentation was on point, it resembled a jewelry bowl. I found high quality pieces of tuna and white fish. Rice is well balanced/seasoned.

Yelp
Chinese-owned Japanese cuisine. Went there on a weekday and there wasn't a lot of people - the customers there were typically regulars. The host/waitress was very friendly explaining the menu and dishes whilst also chatting with the regular customers, providing a very friendly vibe. Menu choices include a la carte, tokusen omakase ($168), jyo-sen omakase ($138), and early bird omakase ($58). Note that early bird omakase is every day from 4:30pm-6:30pm. We chose the tokusen omakase option which included five appetizers, nine pieces of sushi, hand roll, soup, and dessert. The five appetizers were surprisingly good, the most impressive ones as follows: Tempura fish and shiso - well balanced crispiness of the fish and shiso with seaweed and sea salt. The crispiness was just perfect, not overly crispy nor oily. Kumamoto Oyster, Japanese Hairy Crab Uni Caviar, Bergamot - this is a three in one appetizer, three mini dishes within one appetizer course. Absolutely adored the Japanese hairy crab. The sweetness of the crab complemented with uni and caviar, this is a selection of the upmost ingredients. Kumamoto oyster topped with salmon roe, soy sauce, and scallion seasoning was also quite tasty. This was my first time eating bergamot so it was an interesting experience figuring out how to twist and eat it. Grilled Swordfish - the swordfish meat was grilled to perfection. It's meat was extremely tender and topped with truffle salt which added flavor yet wasn't overly empowering. Unfortunately the sushi experience wasn't as pleasant as the appetizers. Sushi itself was just ok. Edible but nothing particularly special that "wowed" us. Sushi rice could use some improvement. The sushi rice in our first couple of pieces were on the stiffer side. After a couple pieces (perhaps the rice came to room temperature?) the sushi rice was a bit better. This was a nice omakase exploratory experience. I wonder if I can go back next time for just the appetizers in the future?

Yelp
Kakurega provides phenomenal, fresh sushi in a low-key, underground location at the heart of Flushing, NY. For the $$$, you're getting a selection of amazing quality fish. There is an a affordable omakase option for $58 during the week as well that I unfortunately didn't get to try. I ordered the tri toro don - $28 (not on their online menu), and they even added a bit of delicious uni for me on the house. The three forms of tuna were all delicious, melts right in your mouth. The eel sashimi - $8 for one piece, was excellent as well. The sake we had was Kamoizumi Nigori Ginjo, and it had the perfect amount of sweetness. If you're looking for tremendous quality, this is the place. Expect to spend some $$$ when you visit. 4/5

Yelp
My husband and I were looking for Omakase restaurant for our wedding anniversary and found this place on Yelp. We made a reservation online but the restaurant wasn't too busy since it was a week day. You can sit on the counter near the chefs (and see how they are preparing the dish) or sit on the table. For Omakase, they had two different options. We picked the most expensive one to try a variety of fish! And we LOVED it. Everything was delicious and very fresh! Throughout the course, we enjoyed every single piece and staffs were attentive making sure to explain each fish and we are satisfied with everything. We are going to come back soon!! **Street parking (might be difficult to find a spot) **Reservation available **Small space inside **Different types of Sake available **Other dishes are available (not only Omakase)

Yelp
I love Queens. I moved here during the pandemic for a dream job. I live by the office. I also love sushi. I have been searching for a place such as Kakurega. I have been a regular at great neighborhood joints in other cities. I don't mean the fancy places you save for and splurge on. I mean no nonsense mom and pop businesses with quality fish. Sushi has been done in by its own popularity. There is no shortage of bad sushi available nowadays, even at high price points that should embarrass the proprietors. After two years of looking, I am glad to have found Kakurega. This is what I had in mind. I started with the appetizer of sweet shrimp and salmon roe and sea urchin. It was superlative. They also fried the shrimp head with a light batter. That was a sign this was a good bet. I then had the chirashi. That is the best bang for the buck at a Japanese restaurant. I was spoiled by the now closed Japan Inn of Washington DC. It was a diplomatic haunt with great deals you would not have expected at such a quality venue. The chirashi here was compact but good. It would suffice for most meals. I lingered though. I tried the foie gras for dessert. That also displayed quality. They have an omakase service. That is in a price range for a special occasion. The environment is for young hipsters. It's probably designed for late night and after hours. I was there at 5pm. I was the sole patron. I like the vibe. It has the feel of something secret. My Yelp philosophy has been to write about only places I recommend. I don't feel the need to disparage the others. So here is the summary. If you want great sushi in Flushing or Forest Hills or that vicinity, I have tried all the possibilities. This is the best.

Yelp
I ordered toro tartar, very nice appetizer, plus the fresh scallops was sweet. You can taste the ocean from this fresh scallops. Absolutely amazing. The service was also very nice, she explained the ways to eat this toro tartar with seaweed. Thanks I order some sushi, you might think the portion is too small, but let me tell you, it worth it with the top quality. Will come back next time to check this place for sure.

Yelp
Came here for a large gathering, so we got the whole bar space. Decided not to do omakase, and just did a bunch of ala carte items. - The chawanmushi was rich and decadent and super umami. - Tako wasabi was good, chunky pieces - Squid tempura - This one was alright, chunky pieces. - Chirashi - Small portion, but fresh sashimi - live scallop - this was very fresh, and the lime zest was perfect on top - Uni (Maine and California) - both were very fresh - Some box containing (negitoro, uni, and ikura with a quail egg) - Would prefer to eat them separately, as mixing them together didn't work for me. - Foie Gras - this one was alright, the flavor just wasn't there for me. - Chutoro - was fresh - Ikura - this one was disappointing. It was bitterly sweet. I do not like how they marinated the ikura. - tuna avocado roll - fresh tuna - sashimi platter - lots of fresh fish, but it wasn't mind blowing - fresh unagi - meh - tuna tartare with caviar - this one was pretty good. - grilled fish - some parts were too overcooked, but the flavor was tasty - Matcha dessert with red bean - I actually enjoyed this a lot. It was mildly flavored but hit the spot. Small establishment; friendly staff; somewhat slow service, and they forgot a few items here and there, but overall it was a nice experience.

Yelp
Good food very nice service cute small spot easy to find. I love the decor inside and they have a delicious menu.

Richard Y.

Yelp
Very very strong quality for the price here. They source premium ingredients so there's a good range -- you can spend $30 or $100 and be happy with both. Definitely the best sushi in the neighborhood, highly recommend.

Yelp
Had dinner with friend last Saturday, so far OK, but the sushi rice too sour, no matter we did order the 3 Toro chirashi, avacado roll or the King salmon roll, all rice were sour. chef put too much vinegar into rice. We did order a Hokkaido uni. If no comparison, that was good. But it compare with the uni on top of the wagyu beef, that Hokkaido uni was not fresh and good enough. The plate served was broken. Usually Japanese would not serve any broken utensils.

Yelp
This was our first time eating here and I am a HUGE fan of this place. Each plate of the omakase was delightful. It consisted of 4 appetizers, 8 pieces of sushi and a dessert. The quality of the seafood was solid. In a restaurant with a better ambience, you would easily be paying double what they charge. I appreciated the low key vibe and the service was also excellent. Our daughter wouldn't eat anything on their menu so I gingerly asked if we could get her something from another restaurant. The waitress immediately offered me a menu from the ramen shop next store and even called in the order for me. The ramen shop then delivered our order to this restaurant. We will be back for sure!

Yelp
Please scroll and read for food review which deserves 4 stars for its price point. Valentine's Day- I had a 730P reservation and waited a whole hour..! When we got to the restaurant, we were the second couple waiting and third came shortly after stating his reservation and expressed his frustration because we had to wait and the hostess/waitress offered them a table seating instead of us, who got there first! I didn't let that get to me and asked when we will be sat, in which she replied "5mins we have 1,2,3 *points to tables* leaving" 15 mins past- nothing, this was at 8P by now. By 820P we left. The host/waitresse chased after us asking us to wait "a bit more" oh my god, If a table STILL isn't ready why would you bother telling me to wait?? On top of that, I addressed how she let a couple who came after us seat and her excuse was she got confused and didn't know who came in first? you spoke to them right after you spoke to me?? How can you forget that easily? It's your job as a hostess to know! Also, she didn't confirm any of our names for the reservations! It could have been anyone saying they made a reservation when they didn't. It's Valentine's Day for Christ sake, get your reservation timing better. Manage the time for reservations, respect other customers times. Why would you make anyone wait a WHOLE SEATING TIME for their reservation? This is why Kakurega will never be considered luxury or high end sushi establishment. If you cannot time your omakase meals or reservation times properly, why bother offering omakase. Other high end omakase establishments don't even let customers in after a 10min grace period. They have no respect for peoples time and I will never come here for any special occasion ever again. Food: Good for its price point, however it could be even more worth it if lower as they serve almost the same pieces and appetizers as any other omakase spot but for more. I recommend coming on weekdays or times not busy since they don't respect time frames.

Mike S.

Yelp
After seeing Kakurega listed in Eater NY's top Omakase spots under $125 in NYC and knowing Danny's pedigree from his College Point restaurant (Currently Danny's French Cuisine formerly Danny's Steakhouse & Oyster Bar) I figured it was worth giving this place a try. It is located in a stylish, intimate basement space in downtown Flushing. Currently they offer three tiers of Omakase. We opted for the mid-tier: $138 for 17 courses, including five appetizers, nine pieces of sushi, a handroll, miso soup, and a dessert. The breakdown isn't listed on the menu, but perhaps that's the point. Omakase is to trust that the Sushi chef is giving you a quality experience for the money - you are in his hands. We were the only diners in the place with our 6:15 reservation on a recent Thursday - we had the place to ourselves our entire time. I believe this has more to do with unfounded Coronavirus fears, which is unfortunately disproportionately affecting Asian restaurants. I like that their omakase is fairly straight forward and not focusing too much on over the top combinations. The fish and rice in the nigiri was complimented slightly by small additions keeping the focus where it belonged. Highlights were the chutoro and surprisingly the akami tuna. The Wagyu was a real treat as well - charred with a blowtorch to perfection. I really enjoyed the otoro handroll where the nori had such an excellent crunch to it - great texture. For me I would have preferred the apps to come after the nigiri since their flavors for many were more pronounced - fried fish, mayo laced oyster, baby abalone, rich monkfish liver would be more appreciated towards the end. I would have liked to seen Hokkaido sea urchin served instead of the Santa Barbara one we were given. The Ikura in our jewel box was marinated in mirin and yuzu disappointingly masking the saline sea flavor, but still interesting. We were given a complimentary carafe of sake after we picked up and commented on the flavor of the ikura - a thoughtful and generous gesture. I would do the $98 tier next time since it offers 14 courses, including four appetizers, eight pieces of sushi, miso soup, and a dessert - I would supplement with additions. This wasn't the best omakase experience I ever had in terms of fish quality and rice preparation, but it has a good value and the service and friendliness of the staff elevates the experience.

Yelp
My first time getting Omakase and I wasn't disappointed! Every bite was amazing and make you keep wanting more and more! The whole restaurant is very classy and cute! The waitress is very attentive too & the chefs are excellent! I'd definitely going back for more delicious sushi !

Strad Y.

Yelp
This Japanese sushi bar is a hidden jewel deep down in the village of Flushing. This place provides various of tapas in Japanese style, we'd like to thank our server Ms. 林who took care and spoiled us, all the cooking's were out of this world, our complement to the chefs! Definitely, we will catch that wonderful experience again in the near future.

Victoria L.

Yelp
Post Omakase price was $138 & $168, there is no $98 / $118 menu anymore. I dont mind paying more if the food quality matches the price. The staff was friendly but no attentive. There is none explanation of the menu nor the fish kind of the sushi at all, basically they just drop the dish to us and leave.. this is not my first Omakase experience but this service needs to be improved and at least they show some expertise in their sushi knowledge . We ordered $138 menu. 4 appetizer and 8 sushi. Fish is fresh but nothing is Wow. There is not even 1 piece of Uni sushi. For this price range I expected more. Oops, at the end of the meal, i still carry an empty stomach . But the bill is $300+ for 2 . Rather order a chinese takeout at flushing then. No next time

Randy L.

Yelp
The omakase was tasty, the chef was creative, hosts were knowledgeable, other patrons were friendly. My experience here was pleasant. Worth the price.

Yelp
Came on Valentine's Day. Surprised when I got there, they were only serving the $168/person omakase. This info was nowhere to be found on their website, on the reservation confirmation or mentioned when I called the hour prior. But...I went with it bc I was curious to try the place and thought it might be worth it. It was definitely not considering they charged about as much as the higher end omakase spots in the city and for about half the quality of experience and food. Food: there were 5 appetizers, 7 sashimi pieces, a soup and a slice of crepe cake. The dishes were not up to par. Small details like the wasabi not being real and the horseradish flavor overpowering most of the sushi that was served to the lack of creativity in each dish were all very disappointing. Ambience: most Japanese sushi places pride themselves in keeping the place looking clean and organized. Here, there were piles of dishes and sauces stacked on the back counter. There were boxes and extra chairs stored in the corner of the dining area. All of this would have been fine for an average dining experience in Flushing, but the $168 price point which came out to about $225/person after tax, tip and sharing on carafe of sake with my partner left very much to be desired. The a la carte menu looks much more reasonably priced and probably just about worth the quality of fish that was served. I can't say the fish was bad, but for sure would not justify the price. If you're desperate for somewhat higher end sushi (ie. No dragon rolls or spicy tuna), this is probably the only option in downtown flushing, but don't expect it to be the real deal.

Henry W.

Yelp
Pro - the food is outstanding vs another Japanese restaurant within a 1-mile radius. Con - For fine dining, it is where this place missing. The ambient does not compliment the food. It requires reservation so this lead us to be believe this place will be nice quite like an Japanese. Instead, we are seated close to the bar where the noise level is way too high. The air ventilation is horrible. The fume of cooking steak fills the room. While you are attempting to taste and enjoy nice toro melt in the mouth, all you whiff the smoke in the air. It is very unpleasant and unenjoyable experience. 2 stars are for the staff and food (chef). No star for the location, it is at basement so anyone that is handicapped or has knee problem is going find difficultly to get down. The stairs might appear to be steep for some people. No star for the ambient that complement with food. It is very difficult to enjoy quite dinner when people at bar are having loud conversation. No star for overall experience for both value and dining experience. For a relatively price range, it is better to be somewhere else to enjoy that special occasion.

Lori P.

Yelp
I really good they come back to businesses. I've had an amazing time here and everyone that I've recommended to come here or brought here fell in love with it. It's a small intimate space and the owner was more like a host for a party. Everyone was laughing and having fun together. If I remember circling out was average 170pp for omakase and deformed worth it. You'll be so full and the ingredients were super fresh. The chefs are tom my butt very skilled and disciplined in their craft. Definitely recommend! Even a great place for you to come alone.

Jay Z.

Yelp
As a flushing local, this is my goto omakase restaurant, the staff are very kind and the food is good. Price is definitely higher than the quality of my standards for omakase. I don't believe the owner or chefs are Japanese, I believe they're chinese. They have an excellent selection of sake and a must get is definitely the "jewel box". I hate how the pandemic has ruined the omakase experience with glass all over the sushi bar.

Melissa C.

Yelp
I'm always excited to find places that have high quality sushi in Queens so that I don't have to trek to Manhattan. Kakurega fits that profile. We ordered a la carte (because we know what we like and we want more of it!) - everything was extremely fresh and well prepared. Standout pieces of sushi were the A5 Waygu with uni, sea eel, and of course the toro. I also noticed that there is a high fish to rice ratio in every piece of sushi...meaning they give generous portions of fish. This is a great find and is a reprieve within the hustle & bustle of Flushing. Prices are quite reasonable especially compared to similar places in the city, but of course... be prepared to pay significantly more than your regular sushi joint! I highly recommend for those who are looking for omakase quality sushi with all the convenience of being located in Queens.

Filip R.

Yelp
As we had a large Group we got our private room. Staff were super friendly explained all the dishes. Hands down the best sushi experience of my life. The owner Danny takes great pride in having the best quality food that he can get from around the world. We got the omakase experience. There is not a single dish I would highly recommend. Even thought it's been a couple of days I can still remember how tasty and flavorful each dish was. If you are looking for having quality sushi experience there is not a place I would recommend over this location!!!

Patrick W.

Yelp
TLDR: Quite literally a basement in Flushing. Don't sleep on Kakurega though, high quality sushi awaits and quite reasonably priced. There's no reason to trek out to Manhattan when you have a place like this in town. True omakase offered along with a la carte rolls, etc. There is also an extensive sake selection if that's your thing. I was debating whether or not to roll the dice on Kakurega for a long time. I'll give the credit to the recent Eater article, it did help nudge me through the door. We came for the omakase and were not sure which set to get. They offer 3 different types of omakase at $98, $138 and $168. She did the middle tier and I did the higher one. The format is a bit different here, each of the different menus begin with a number of small appetizers/plates. This is then followed by a nigiri sushi progression. The highest tier uses more premium ingredients. I personally prefer a nigiri carpet bombing but I can roll with this style too. Small plates. First was a chawanmushi with mushrooms and some black truffle. Fragrant, creamy - I could have done without it but it was good. Next came roasted nori to wrap a lightly fried shiso leaf, white fish and a slice of radish. This was unique and really good. Although fried, the coating was so light and the sliver of radish cut through all of it nicely. This was then followed by a trio of rich bites. A halved medallion of monk fish liver in a soy sauce. Creamy, foie gras of the sea. A slice of bottarga that's been lightly seared by a blow torch. Never had this before, it was very salty/rich as I imagined so I understand why it's sitting on top of a big chunk of radish. Then a kumamoto oyster topped with seared cod milt roe. My other small plates were abalone (very good) and a seared piece of A5 Miyazaki wagyu. I honestly liked the preparation more than the wagyu itsef. These pan-fried paper thin slices of garlic/mushroom just made the beef way tastier. Sushi tasting. They picked some solid pieces, the main difference between the more $138/$168 menu was the latter has more wagyu and also foie gras. Other than that though, most of the pieces were similar. The pieces here have a bit more toppings but not overkill. The beginning pieces were slightly torched mostly. A seared sea bream (madai?), torched golden eye snapper (kinmedai), a great amberjack (kanpachi) and then flamed Japanese barracuda (kamasu). All really tasty. What I thought was very unique was the torched mackerel (saba), topped with green onions and finally all wrapped with roasted nori. I love being surprised. Now we ordered foie gras but they actually cut a generous chunk, halved it and then seared it before putting on top of a scallop with lime zest. Fantastic. Although the tiger shrimp (kuruma ebi) was really good, it was a bit bland after following the flavor bomb right before it. Final sushi piece was a super fatty tuna (otoro) topped with sea urchin (Hokkaido uni) and caviar/gold. A bit showy for a final piece but as you'd expect, a "rich" way to wrap up the savory meal. The meal ends with a miso soup and dessert. A hand roll comes with the middle tier omakase. I didn't want to be left out, so I ordered my own hand rolls after. Throughout the meal, Danny (the owner) would converse with us in between bites but never in a way that seemed intrusive or too much. It's difficult to find that balance. The wait staff was very attentive. There was a slight slip-up in the beginning. We did request no oysters for her (she's allergic) yet saw her plate being prepared with one on it. As we discussed this among ourselves relatively quietly, one of the servers picked up on this and got it fixed. Mistakes happen and it was resolved before it was served to us, I did appreciate that attention to detail. I think Kakurega helps add an option to a a kind of cuisine that's honestly not common in Flushing. They use all premium ingredients here, Danny would explain where everything's from and if you've eaten a lot of sushi; you'll notice it on your own. I'd like to come back and try more of their a la carte items. I did browse through the menu and it's all priced quite reasonably. Especially if you consider the quality of the fish. The spicy tuna (which I always order if they have it) is made from scratch. They take a blue fin tuna loin, dice it up, mixed it with onions and add the spicy sauce fresh. It makes a huge difference. None of that slurry of tuna mixed with too much mayo and an absurd amount of panko. Kakurega is not cheap but you're getting a fair price for the quality you're getting. As for the omakases, I would probably do Option 2 next time. I enjoy all of the luxury ingredients but I can pass on most of them. Just a personal preference. So in short, give Kakurega a try. If you're looking to splurge on an omakase or just want some quality sushi. There's a lot of great food in Flushing other than just Chinese.

Yelp
The sushi are so fresh that they are melting in your mouth! Not to mention a friendly staff :)

Yelp
Arrived at restaurant at 8pm, left at 11pm. Food quality was good, staff was nice but not attentive. Kept missing items we ordered and the quantity we ordered was incorrect but never once apologized. Food took forever to come out and towards the end, we gave up and told them we wanted the bill but in reality we're still waiting on the appetizer we ordered first. But of course the missing item was still on the bill. Came in hungry, left hungry. Please note, I'm not telling anyone not to come here. Just wanted to share our group's experience. FYI, we sat in the back table, maybe it's a better experience if you sit at the bar. :)

Yelp
My husband and I came here for date night this past week. The service and food was phenomenal. We ordered the $168 omakase as they said that was the one with better fish. What we loved about them is each piece of fish was prepped with special sauces and spices but not in an overwhelming way that you don't taste the freshness of the fish. The omakase did not come with some additionally that we usually love in sushi restaurants such as foie gras and ebi botan. We were not disappointed. As for covid safety, they do still have the plexi glass dividers between seats and in front of the sushi bar. Employees were masked the whole time. I did not feel unsafe during dinner.

Yelp
the best Omakase, the best service, the best conversation we ever had in Flushing, Queens. We had lot of Omakase in Manhattan, not much in Queens, so far, this place is definitely the best of Sushi place in Queens. The fish, the food are so fresh, very creative dishes, it really worth every penny we spent. We will be back again for seasonal dishes. Highly recommend if you love sushi and you love great conversation, most importantly, you love to share the great sushi with your family member including the young kids.. this place is kid very friendly! Must Try!

Yelp
When I first heard this place, I was like, who will go to a flushing omakase place? Then I move to flushing and one day we really want to have sushi but dont wanna go to manhattan. So we tried this place. Surprisingly, everything is so good. The ingredients are really fresh, nice choice, there's a wagyu sushi, soooooo good! Appetizers are also creative and tasty. The last but not least, the service is great! They make you feel at home. Highly recommend!

Yelp
My boyfriend and i did a spontaneous trip to NYC and decided to get sushi in Flushing. We looking for best sushis in Flushing and chose number three on a random list. And found this place! Parking: was as pretty easy. Lots of parking around the block if you want to walk a little bit. Walksd down the stairs, very clean. Was greeted at the door and the restaurant just opened (4 pm) and they had a special where you get eat a omakase early bird for $48 dollars and it includes 1 appetizer and 8 sushis. And we received a soup and dessert on the house! We were seated and got hot tea and a hot towel. It was really refreshing. The sushi was so fresh. It was satisfying and fulfilling. It was so amazing. And the staff was so kind and the place was so clean and put together. We want to come back with our friends and family and we hope to come back soon! At the end of the meal, we had a very good conversation with all the staff there and the chefs. We felt really welcomed!

Yelp
Was in the area and craving for Sushi and found this place on Yelp, so decided to give it a try. I didn't have much time so I only ordered a few items. Wow I didn't expect a random restaurant that I stumbled in would be so good! Their ingredients are so fresh, sushi chef knows how to make the sushi look good, and of course season it well and make it so delicious! I'm so impressed and would come back to try the omakase!

Yelp
Omakase I picked the $98 / set with add on few I like as well . Instead of order individual dish I would like to recommend omakase set ( you call always order anything you want later ) With two hours indoor parking is good as well with car.

Yelp
My dining experience with Kakurega was disappointing and I will not go back again. My friend and I wasn't able to enjoy the whole omakase experience (168$ per person) because the chef and waitress were unable to handle drunk customers at the restaurant. There were a group of customers drinking and talking extremely loud because they had too much fun and drank a little too much. The chef and waitress knew we were uncomfortable and they did nothing about it. My friend and I can't enjoy the food and can't even have conversation because other customers were too loud. What's next??!! We lost our appetite because someone from that group threw up in the dining area... gross!!! And then waitress sprayed some cleaner or air refresher all over... and the restaurant smells like bathroom. A worker there started to clean up... I can't even look... it was just disgusting. We picked this place because of the good reviews and it wasn't even that good. The chef left fishes on the counter through out the hours we were there (2hr). I have to tell you I had fish bone in one of my sushi course and he can't properly trim the bad fat on on wagyu. This is bad. Maybe also because of those drunk customers ruined everything. If you do come here please be prepared you might run into them again because the chef and waitress seems to know them pretty well that's why they did nothing about it. Totally disappointed. Not worth going. FYI-the chef offers free sake... maybe that's why people got so drunk and threw up.

Yelp
This place is a hot mess. Zero atmosphere or music in the restaurant. No soy sauce on the table either. I'm sure the waitress who served was definitely new and it was her first week. Not too crazy that she took our orders and wrote them down on a piece of receipt paper rather than an actual pad. They give it to you separately in a dish and not given on the table in the bottle. I'm not sure what kind of soup sauce they served us when I specifically asked for the bottle, but it wasn't the Kikkoman soy sauce. The menu falls apart in your hands. It's honestly more like a sake bar than anything else. There's barely slim pickings of sushi & sashimi. What kind of sushi place doesn't have masago or red surf clams on the menu or even eel & avocado? Don't come here if you're looking for a full sushi dinner. The sushi they serve is also overpriced. Even the seaweed salads in Manhattan aren't $10. They got our orders mixed up when we asked for tuna roll and we got a 2nd helping of tuna salad instead. We asked for hot sake and we got cold. When she tried to serve us our correct order of sake, she spilled the sake on the table when she tried to be fancy and pour it from a distance instead of directing into the glass. It's that difficult to make orders when there's only 10 people in the restaurant. Slow service for a slow Sunday night. Me & my brother must have waited a good 15-20 minutes on our orders. TL;DR. Go for the sake, not the sushi.

Yelp
We always look for a good sushi spot and found this place on Yelp. We ordered a few apps and toro, hamachi and other rolls. Sushi are delicious and service was very good. Will go back again in the near future.

Yelp
Fresh and delicious. The omakase is worth it. A hidden gem in the middle of crowded flushing. Great service. We had the best time.

Yelp
That was absolutely delicious. The food comes in these awesome boxes and the takeout service was fantastic. The food is really that good.

Yelp
Food: Excellent omakase experience with top quality ingredients! The appetizers were very interesting concepts but lacked some taste. Overall, the food was excellent here! Customer Service: the staff here was great and the chef ‍ has all the experience in the world. However, the staff didn't provide that top notch omakase feel and more like a Chinese restaurant with Chinese staff. The chef didn't explain every dish and the sauces throughout the omakase course. Environment: it's in a basement which is kind of cool but it stops there as the rest of the decoration is pretty average and doesn't reflect the price. Cost: it's a nice spot in the area as the price runs about $150/person for omakase but the overall vibe is under $100 with the staff and the decoration. The food was great and is comparable with sushi on Jones which is top value for its $58 price points.

Yelp

Yelp
My friends and I were actually looking for a nice sushi spot and came across this place two years ago, the sushi here it was bliss I won't lie lol

Yelp
This place use to be Sushi You. They changed the sushi bar to be more traditional but the table arrangement is pretty much the same. We were a party of four, so we called early afternoon to reserve seats for omakase for the same night. We all opted for the $115 set that comes with everything on the $95 set, plus a handroll and the wagyu beef. First off, we were served our appetizer: monk fish liver (I'm not a fan of the texture), something that was like fish brain (it was creamy, stale tasting, really gross), and oysters (these were good). Then we were served a bowl with a piece of uni, botan ebi and salmon roe. After the appetizers, we waited about 20 mins before we were served our nigiris because it took the chef awhile to prepare every fish. I did not enjoy this part because I felt like we were rushed once the nigiri portion began. We did not have time to take pictures of the pieces and the chef did not seem patient. When one of us was finish with one piece of sushi, he would already serve them the next piece, so he did not wait for the others to finish. I have personally went to omakase that is suppose to be a 30 mins experience, which they sort of rush you a bit because each time slot is timed, which is totally understandable. However, this was suppose to be an 90 mins experience and there was only us at the omakase table and four ladies, who were already having dessert when we got there. The main reason why I am giving two stars is because the sushi rice was so vinegary that all I could taste was rice vinegar. It was absolutely gross and I am a type of person that enjoys freshly grated wasabi, not to place on the sushi, but to taste it a bit between the nigiri pieces, however, they did not provide wasabi on our plates (something I'm not use to). Also, the dessert was so cheap... it was "black sesame panna cotta" (it is black sesame paste with some gelatin - the black sesame was not mixed very well, so the black sesame is all just settled on the bottom), two small pieces of honeydew and Asian pear. We also ordered a bottle of large sake and we all paid $165/person with tip and tax included. We all left unsatisfied. Another thing, that bothered me was that they did not ask us whether we would like to opt out of certain pieces (I don't like mackerel) and whether we had allergies to anything (2 of us were allergic to honeydew and pears). I can see potential in this place, but they need to have more outgoing sushi chefs that actually tells their guests what they are serving. After almost each piece, we had to ask the chef what type of fish this is. Each time, he would tell us in Japanese, but what is it in English? The chef was Chinese so he could of told us in Chinese as well.. I really wanted to like this place, so I would not have to travel to Manhattan for omakase.

Yelp
I don't like masa. I've had a few times over the years and I don't feel the price is justifiable , that being said I do like sushi seki and other small sushi places that dole out Omakase which have seen to garnered a cult following in recent years. Kakurega sushi is down the block from where I live and has been in my bookmarks for awhile. Although I tend to scrunch my nose at sushi establishments in queens aside from Takesushi which is by far one of my favorites and extremely authentic, iki has been a go to favorite for my friends and business partners alike. we don't order the sushi much at iki. Was not expecting to be so blown aWay in an unassuming basement in downtown flushing but wow. The fish and meats are all fresh and everything from the soy sauce to the nori( seaweed) is sourCed from Japan and the highest quality. I could eat spoonfuls of the ikura for days , the foie gras melted in my mouth as did the the uni, the toro, the salmon the jewelry box really is a dream come true with quail egg, ikura, uni and a beautiful edible flower. I can't wait to come bacK and savor every piece of this experience again and again and again. AMAzing service and thanks to the sushi chef !

Yelp
This is another hidden gem in flushing for fresh sushi. I would say iki restaurant is number one and this place is number 2 for omakasu. The sashimi is fresh that is a very important aspect. It's worth it getting the omakasu than just ordering different things on the menu. The place is small and intimate. I would not mind coming back here.

Yelp
It was ok, but dont expect japanese chef quality / traditional omakase like other places in city. This is chinese owned place serving omakase by chinese chef.

Jianna L.

Yelp
Located in the basement of an alley that's mostly filled with bars, Kakurega stands true to its name, which means Hiding Place. The interior is quite a contrast to the outside as well, with a comfortable sushi counter that can seat up to around 14 people. (There are also chargers and bag hangers around the counter!)   We got the lower tier Omakase, priced at 115$, which was enough to fill us up. (I eat a lot too...) The price is a little more expensive than other sushi places in Flushing, but then the quality is also significantly better.  From what we heard from the chef, all of the fishes are from Japan, they also use top quality rice and other ingredients.  The sushi is on par with some of the top omakase places in the City, the appetizers were great as well.  I really liked the A5 Miyazaki wagyu + the conch shell. (Though I think they might've changed the menu  by now.)   Given that it is a new place, there are still some kinks that they need to work out, but overall it is a great addition to the queens sushi scene.

Yelp
Where do I even begin? ... If you've read the other reviews, yes, it's a basement type restaurant but interior looks much better than exterior. The phrase goes, never judge a book by it's cover. There is a long staircase that goes down and when you enter it's like you're somewhere else, Japan? Lol. We had reservations for 7:30 but they called us and kindly let us know it was booked and if we didn't mind they would love to serve us at 6 so we went in at 6 pm. Greeted right away, seated right at the front and brought teas. It was a green matcha tea. My cup of tea was always warm and filled, which I loved. I never had to ask for anything. We went in knowing what we wanted already my husband has the sashimi Omakase and I had the sushi sashimi Omakase, both were 145$ each. I love a little bit of rice with my sushi so I definitely loved my sushi sashimi Omakase, your meal is a little longer if you get sushi sashimi. Everything is brought out in orderly fashion, appetizers were delicious! I especially loved the liver that sort of looked like a sweet potato piece, lol. Will attach photos. The Toro, eel and uni were some of my favorites. Everything just melts in your mouth, the steak too! Also wanted to mention there is no fish taste at all. The service is also great! Everyone is interacting with you, the chef, to waitress to even the gentleman who might be the owner, I'm not sure or the manager, lol. But they all are very kind and talk to you and tell you to ask for anything or if you need explaining, just ask, or like us if you are not sure what to do or where to begin. Honestly was a bit intimidated by the sashimi bowl because I didn't know where to begin, lol. It was also amazing to sit front row and watch the chef prepare everything, that was my very first time and it was amazing watching how intricatly the chef makes each nigiri. This will be my favorite high end sushi spot from here on out. Also this is my first time ever doing sushi Omakase style with my husband. We both loved the experience and had a very pleasant wedding anniversary dinner. Definitely worth the price you pay for experience and for what you get.

Yelp
A hidden gem in such Chinese neighborhood! I was being greeted once i stepped in and the server asked for my name. I was being served with name being called, felt so personalized and special! Below are what I had: Japanese Sea cucumber Truffle chawanmushroom Live maine Uni Barracuda Engawa flute fit Kampachi Amberjack Ika Awabi abalone Kinmedai golden eyes snappers Miyazaki A5 Waygu Otoro with Hokkaido uni Hakkaido uni and salmon roe House special (one of the kind too uni and salmon roe on rice) I don't know how to begin to describe the sensation of this omakase xperience. Strongly recommended this restaurant if you want to experience top notch Japanese food with a good environment! By the way, they have a wide selection of alcohol too! They don't rush you to finish the food nor have time limit. Go when it's not peak hours! Environment: 5 Food: 5 Service : 5 Tears of joy and shall be dreaming of uni cuddles tonight! Im surprised Queens has such restaurant and I don't need to travel to Manhattan for Omakase next time!
