"The name of this restaurant is particularly apt (Kaleja is the Sephardic word for “alley”) given its location in Málaga’s Jewish quarter, just a few steps from the city’s Picasso Museum. The first thing that will strike you as you walk through the door is the subtle aroma of smoke, a key feature that sets this restaurant apart. Here, chef Dani Carnero has gone for a modern take on dishes of old, working with the heat of his wood-fired grill to create what he calls “candle cooking” – a style of cuisine that revives tastes and flavours from his childhood, in many cases connected to traditional Andalucian recipes that have been brought back from the brink. These are served on two tasting menus (Memoria and Gran Menú Memoria), on which every dish is teeming with powerful flavours and has a story behind it." - Michelin Inspector

An absolute delight all round. Trying this little gem in Malaga is a huge recommend. The tasting menu and wine paring was exceptional. Definitely worth at least 1Michelin star if not more. Come check it out for an excellent dining experience.

Everything here in this restaurant was right, the minimalist interior, the food and the story the chef wanted to tell about his history, his family, his country. The friendly service and the local wines completed the picture and as icing on the cake we got a tour in the kitchen. It was hospitality at its best!

It is a very small and familiar place, the staff make you feel at home. We really enjoyed the large tasting menu. Except 2-3 dishes the rest were amazing. We do consider that this experience deserves what you pay. We really enjoyed it! Congrats to all KALEJA team!

What a place. Don’t miss out on the chef’s table experience if you have the opportunity. We had the pleasure of seeing magic in motion during the night. Amazing culinary experience 😍 A great add: there should be a sommelier that matches wine with each dish, but guessing the tempo doesn’t allow it.

My favorite restaurant in Malaga. They were creative and every bite was sensational. We got a spot at the Chef's table through our hotel. I actually preferred sitting there compared to the main seating, because we got to watch them cook! They absolutely deserve their Michelin star. Everything was on par or better than a Michelin starred restaurant. The service was wonderful. The servers and chefs were all friendly and happy to take any of our questions.

Kaleja restaurant deserves a commendable 4/5 rating! The standout feature was undoubtedly the exceptional taste of the dishes, with the aubergine and venison being highlights. Their unique blend of flavors and textures truly distinguished them from other Michelin establishments, making for an unforgettable culinary experience. While the food itself was a delight, the presentation didn't quite match the deliciousness. The lack of Instagram-worthy visuals was a minor drawback, as the focus seemed to be on taste rather than aesthetics. The restaurant's minimalistic interior design, though aiming for simplicity, bordered on being overly plain and didn't quite elevate the overall ambiance as we had hoped. The service was generally praiseworthy, with attentive and swift waitstaff. However, the language barrier posed a challenge, as not all waiters were equally proficient in English, leading to some dish descriptions getting lost in translation. A noteworthy aspect that bumped up our rating was the opportunity to witness traditional Spanish cooking techniques firsthand by visiting the kitchen. This unique experience added depth to our dining adventure and contributed significantly to our overall satisfaction. While the desserts were enjoyable, having two ice cream-based desserts felt redundant. It would be great if the restaurant could introduce something new and creative in their dessert selection to provide a more diverse ending to the meal. Kaleja's exceptional flavors and captivating culinary approach, combined with a few areas for improvement, make it a solid choice deserving of its 4/5 rating.

GOOD: Amazing small restaurant, offering innovative dishes based on traditional Malagueno food with local ingredients. Excellent wine recommendations. Impeccable service. BAD: We were seated at the corner table with some sort of access door on the floor. There was a smell of sewer emanating from there, which was very unpleasant.
