"The name of this restaurant is particularly apt (Kaleja is the Sephardic word for “alley”) given its location in Málaga’s Jewish quarter, just a few steps from the city’s Picasso Museum. The first thing that will strike you as you walk through the door is the subtle aroma of smoke, a key feature that sets this restaurant apart. Here, chef Dani Carnero has gone for a modern take on dishes of old, working with the heat of his wood-fired grill to create what he calls “candle cooking” – a style of cuisine that revives tastes and flavours from his childhood, in many cases connected to traditional Andalucian recipes that have been brought back to life and are served on two tasting menus (Memoria and Gran Menú Memoria). One dish that particularly stood out was Kaleja’s take on gazpacho (in Málaga, where it is often made with onion, it is called “gazpacho de floja”), with trout roe and almonds." - Michelin Inspector

Malaga: Where to Eat on Holiday

"Located in the heart of Malaga's Jewish quarter is Kaleja , whose name means 'alley' in the Sephardic language. The Picasso Museum is just a few meters away and Kaleja is worth a visit not just for the visual beauty of its dishes, but also for its historic 'candle cooking' concept where ingredients are cooked over embers for several hours. These slow-cooked dishes appear on two tasting menus, 'Menú Memoria' and 'Gran Menú Memoria', in which Chef Daniel Carnero manages to take diners on a journey to the Andalusian flavors of their childhood." - The MICHELIN Guide

An exceptional dinner: refined, creative, and full of flavor. I sat at the chef’s table, which gave me the perfect view into the kitchen, and I loved watching the team move with such quiet intensity and passion. The atmosphere was elegant but warm, just the right balance to make you feel both special and at ease. Each dish was beautifully balanced and full of flavor, with textures and details that reflect its Michelin star. The wine pairing was equally impressive, perfectly matched, thoughtful, and clearly curated by someone who understands how to elevate a meal. The service was flawless, present, thoughtful. You could feel how much care went into every detail, from the timing of each plate to the quiet confidence of the team. Overall an amazing experience, refined, delicious, and effortlessly elegant. A dinner worth remembering.✨💎

Most of the food was great, some of it good and some ok but the one dish out of the menu was outstanding. The service, however was absolutely not up to Michelin-standarts. We were not even greated upon arrival and one of the waiters simply refused to speak at all to us. One waiter with grey hair, I believe his name was Alejandro, was amazing and he not just explained the dishes to us but also how the fish is caught as he fishes for fun. Everyone else was extremely rude. I wanted to get the wine pairing but was never offered the option. We were asked to chose our drinks before we even saw the menu and our glasses were empty for a big part of the 14 courses despite us asking them to please refill them (the bottle was kept out of reach). After some more courses without wine, I gave up and got up to refill the glasses myself. I then overheard the waiter I asked several courses earlier to please refill telling his manager: I told him previously they can wait. For this price level, I expect a better customer service and a more professional treatment. It was also my birthday and my wife asked previously to arrange for a simple greating note or some birthday aknowledgement but the restaurant never followed up on what they promised.

Outstanding night and dinner Everything was perfect and the atmosphere was very informal, after a while was like being at home with your friends but always with a very high level in service and quality I strongly recommend the kitchen table

It was my first experience at a Michelin star restaurant, but I liked it and it wasn't that overwhelming as I would expect. The restaurant is minimalist, but nice organized. The food was great, as you would expect from a Michelin star chef, but I can only compare it with "regular" food. Also, the quantities were over my expectation for a gourmet restaurant. The staff was friendly and very professional. If you're in Malaga and want this kind of experience, i recommend it. Book it in advance!

Everything here in this restaurant was right, the minimalist interior, the food and the story the chef wanted to tell about his history, his family, his country. The friendly service and the local wines completed the picture and as icing on the cake we got a tour in the kitchen. It was hospitality at its best!

An absolute delight all round. Trying this little gem in Malaga is a huge recommend. The tasting menu and wine paring was exceptional. Definitely worth at least 1Michelin star if not more. Come check it out for an excellent dining experience.
