The 38 Best Restaurants in Melbourne | Eater

"Pita-wrapped, french fry-stuffed lamb souvlaki is Australia’s favorite late-night snack, but at Oakleigh’s Kalimera Souvlaki Art, owners Thomas Deliopoulos and Sylvia Gabriel opt for spit-roasted pork. They pack the meat into chargrilled pita along with onions, tomatoes, tzatziki, paprika, and fries — always fries. Attica’s Ben Shewry is a vocal fan." - Audrey Bourget

As a group of 3 on a Saturday night we were luck to get a table. Served by a friendly face at the counter we were informed that there was only chicken and pork left. This was a good sign, all the food we got was delicious and that is why they had sold out of the rest. The salad was great and the serving sizes ample and not overpriced. Great Greek beers available too. Definitely a place to go back to.

Really delicious food, great value too. I had the small chicken + salad meal and it was super delicious. The lamb is also divine and so delicious.

Came here today. A very wet Melbourne Wednesday. Wanted a gyros for lunch it was a toss up between here and Orexi. From the outside this looked more my scene. Music and good atmosphere. I was recommended the pork gyros. Not disappointed. Just right size for lunch. Plenty of everything and great garlic sauce too. $13 plus $9 for a Fix Hellas beer that was really nice drinking too. Staff were super nice. Definitely bring the kids here. 👍👍👍

Google
Got their renowned pork souvlaki with a side of chips. Super great value, however everything we found was a little bit too salty for our liking. Food came out super quick, service was fantastic!

I've visited this Greek restaurant multiple times with friends, and each experience has been delightful. The atmosphere is lively and welcoming, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely meal. The menu features an impressive selection of authentic Greek dishes, all bursting with flavor. From the home made dips to the gyros, each dish is crafted with care and showcases quality ingredients. Pricing is reasonable considering the generous portions and vibrant setting. Service has always been friendly and attentive, adding to the overall enjoyment of our visits. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or just looking for a fun weekend out, this place delivers consistently. It's a great choice for anyone craving delicious Greek food in a fun environment. Overall, I highly recommend this restaurant for both its food and atmosphere.

Not sure if I got one that was just missing the mark that day or if it’s a bit over hyped. The good: Speed of service, no line up and from ordering to Souv in hand was about 60 seconds. The place has a nice clean friendly feel to it. Price was pretty cheap. The average: unfortunately it was nothing special. Pork was seasoned ok but was a bit dry and none of the good crispy bits. The tomato and onion were fresh and the chips were ok, just pretty standard with some salt and paprika. The bread also was fresh and soft but no good crisp to it. Not sure what the sauce was, it seemed tzatziki like but runny and a bit boring.

The chicken souvlaki here is amazing but this last visit was very disappointing. I was told that they sold out of chicken souva after I paid and they offered to change it to a chicken skewer souva instead. I will say that this is not their fault because I accepted the change but the chicken skewer souva is so disappointing. Small little skewer in the souva and charged the same price as the chicken gyro souva. On the other hand, a skewer with half a pita is $7.50 instead of $13. Took way longer too- three other people got their orders before I did. I’d recommend staying away from the skewers and just stick to the gyros.

This has to be one of the best souvlakis I have ever had! Drove down all the way from the northern suburbs and it was totally worth it. The pork tasted way better than the usual kebab meat you might see at a food truck, which was the seller for me. I also reccomend trying the greek soft drinks!! PS. Get the pork in the souvlaki!!

Yelp
Oakleigh is the new Little Athens of Melbourne and Kalimera make the best authentic Greek Chicken & Pork Souvlaki in town. The Chips are also fabulous being hot, crisp and flavoured perfectly with the right amount of salt & oregano. Best of all....................it's cheap!!! Only $8 for a Souvlaki. Get there!!

Yelp
It seems Australia has a lot of good Greek places to eat. The food here is great and I tried the skepasto which is similar to a wrapped gyro but like a sandwich between two pita breads and I think it also had cheese in it. Despite living in Greece for 15 years, I hadn't tried this before it was quite good.. we also had the selection of dips and a salad. The dips have a selection of all the dips they offer and they are all quite nice and they have a lot of pita bread to try them, but it works better if there are 3 of 4 people in your party. Otherwise it might be too much for two. The tzatziki was good but a bit watery compared to a home made one where you drain the cucumbers longer so the tzatziki comes out creamier. Also the kalimera sauce is just mayo with paprika so it's not that special or a Greek dip really. What I would like to point out is that it's sort of self service because you have to get your own water and go inside to order as well which I'm not a fan of and not something I like to see at a sit down restaurant. That's something reserved for fast food restaurants. That's why I think of it as a 4 star place otherwise it would have been 5 stars for me. I would have also like if they had more outdoor seating because outdoor seating is limited and not something you can do outside if you have a party bigger than 4 people. Something to keep in mind.

Yelp
Good food and ambience ... Kebab type rolls starting from 13 $ They have pork in bread rolls also. Highly recommended!!

Yelp
The chicken souvlaki was marinated absolute deliciousness. The minced lamb with onions was also good but a little blander. Definitely don't miss the great dip platter - 5 fantastic and unusual dips. Next time we'll have to try their specialty pork souvlaki. An unusual but very good option when you're after some souvlaki!

Yelp
Funky, fast and fabulous place for souvlaki. The place has atmosphere and the food reeks of authenticity. They're famous for their pork souvlaki so I tried that. It was good but I will probably try the lamb next time as it's what I crave for when it comes to a souvlaki. Be warned, their souvlaki is a reasonable $9.90 but their 375ml cans are $4 on the top! Despite that I'll be back.

Yelp
Unique and special, this souvlaki place is worth traveling to Oakleigh for. Their speciality is pork souvlaki, which is amazing but the chicken is also very good. The chicken tends to be more tender, though the pork has a certain indescribable quality that makes it pretty addictive as well. Unlike most other Melbourne souvlaki joints, this place does not have lamb in the usual way. Instead, it has lamb mince. I haven't tried it, the pork and chicken is so good that I haven't felt the need to try the lamb. You can get the traditional pita wrap or the platter. The platter has tons of meat, fries, and some pita. The platter is amazing, especially if you are sharing since it is on the large side. I also heavily recommend the spicy cheese dip and their other dips look great as well. In short, Kalimera is a true original in a neighbourhood chock full of good souvlaki places. It is well worth the trip and it is a really good value for the money.

This place is special because it makes "PORK" souvlaki! @_@ 'nuff said!

Yelp
Best souvlaki in Oakleigh. They make them with the chips. Nice affordable in and out snack. Reasonably priced and you are getting great food.

Yelp
Tried this place after reading a review. I got a pork and a chicken souvlaki. Both were tasty but the pork was great. The flat bread was nice and plenty of meat. I found the bread way too small and the sauces a little over powering, but not too bad. Maybe a bit overpriced for $8 but if you are in the area, you could do worse. The staff were very friendly and helpful and would go back if I was driving past.

Yelp
I had the Pork Gyros Platter and it's huge!!Tasty pork gyros, chips, tomato, onion, tzatziki (the best!), soft warm bread. It's very large and very filling but so so yummy! Plus the service is incredible, helpful nice staff and fast! I will be back! I will add it's not healthier to have the platter as it has chips and is so big but it is a treat and maybe good to share!

Yelp
The souvlaki at this place are very similar to the ones in Greece because they use the same ingredients and that is what makes the souvlakis authentic. The souvlaki size may be a bit small but the price for the souvlaki is worth it.Overall I highly recommend this place especially since their souvlakis are only 8$!!

Yelp
This is the ambrosia of the Gods. This is heaping portions of tender, flavorful meat from a spit. This is souvlaki done right. Kalimera offers a simple menu - pork, chicken, chips, lamb meatballs, and this gift from the heavens: spicy cheese. From what I have described, it sounds like a typical, dirty, streetside fast food joint. But, no. It is actually very nicely decorated inside with family photographs that communicate the love and tradition that goes into cooking greek food. I am partial to the chicken with the Greek salad. The portions are so large, one plate can easily be split in two. And please, for the love of Zeus, get the spicy cheese. Cash only.

Yelp
After coming to live in Melbourne, this is the best authentic restaurant that makes genuine skewers with the original herbs I can remember from Greece. Meat that melts in your mouth. I travel at least 2-3 tines a week over 20km each way to have my pork skewers with pitta.

Yelp
Lovely food and vibe here. Had a really nice Saturday lunch of souvlakis, greek salad, chips and tatziki. Really friendly staff too. I'd definitely return. It's casual and can be a little busy at certain hours it seems but in a decent way that we kind of enjoyed.

Yelp
My favourite place to get a feed with my mates weekly. The platters will satisfy your appetite for a while. The atmosphere is very cool and relaxed and the staff are super friendly especially the the 10/10 girl taking the orders. I recommend a chicken, pork or mixed platter. Prices are excellent for what you get served. There is parking very close by as well.

Yelp
Pork or chicken gyros for the win. Deceptively filling things and am told... are the more 'traditional' souvlaki.

Paul S.

Yelp
What a terrible place to eat. It is unhygienic, they recycle the left over dips. They are rude and have no idea about the customer service. NEVER AGAIN

Koula C.

Yelp
Ordered a lamb souvlaki (take-away) and I got a mince lamb kofta. It was like a keftetha with cumin. So ungreek,! , also tasted disgusting. Girl at counter didn't explain that lamb souvlaki is mince kebab , and a souvlaki is only pork or chicken. Nevertheless I rang back with my complaint only to be cut off from the call. Most dissapointed not only with food but the service. Never going back.

Tara M.

Yelp
Highly recommend, the chicken platter was delicious! We shared it with 3 people with some bread and chips and it was plenty for us. Definitely will come again. Great service too!

Briget D.

Yelp
I feel the quality has dropped, ordered the open platter souvlaki, found the meat was rather greasy, and the chips were almost inedible, they were not crispy or fresh, they had either been sitting there for a while, as tasted like they had gone cold and been reheated. Time to find a new souvlaki shop, there is better in Oakleigh.

Lily O.

Yelp
This is one of the best Souvlakiin Oakleigh. My favourite was closed so ended up here. Not bad indeed.
