Michelin-Starred Chef Esteban Lluis of Damiana Is Coming to San Diego | Eater San Diego

"Opening on Fifth Avenue in the Gaslamp by mid‑August, this new restaurant and nightlife venue will showcase cuisine from Esteban Lluis, the Mexicali-born chef behind a Michelin-starred Baja restaurant. Lluis will have full creative control as executive chef, oversee the launch, and plan to be in the San Diego kitchen several times a week. His offerings at the more casual Kaluú are designed for sharing and will include banana leaf-wrapped tamales colados, suckling pig, and Sinaloan-style chicken with molcajete sauce. The modern, sleek space will operate as a restaurant in the evening and then morph into a nightclub as the night progresses; the layout mixes tables and booths with a long bar adjacent to a dance floor that will host live DJs regularly, and the ownership group has ties to Tijuana nightlife." - Candice Woo

Portions were small. The service was slow. This is not a fine dine restaurant. Atmosphere was more of a sports bar. Drinks were ok. 150$$ for all. Don’t waste your money.

Had an amazing dining experience at Kaaluu! The ambiance was sexy and inviting, and the food was absolutely delicious — every dish was full of flavor and beautifully presented. The service was top-notch; attentive without being overbearing. I was referred by Nicole Dineolgy, and I’m so glad I took her recommendation — she truly knows the best spots! I’ll definitely be coming back and bringing friends with me next time.

Michelin-starred chef, stunning decor, and vibrant vibes…count on seeing me here! The carne taco with potato and cactus 🌵!!! They brought it back for tonight. I hope it stays on the menu. But every dish looked amazing!

We got the rockfish tostadas and tacos. The octopus taco is very good with tender octopus cooked to perfection. The rockfish tostadas were great with a spicy sauce similar to the “Lao gan ma” sauce. We also had great service from our server when we wanted accommodations in switching up beans for salads and lactose-free desserts. The ambience of the restaurant was cool.

First saw Kaluu on instagram as a new Baja inspired restaurant. Was pleasantly surprised at the modern decor/ambiance as it would serve as a great date night spot. The food was Baja inspired and had great flavor that you would expect across the border. Our server Carmen was attentive and patient answering all of our questions, would request her again! Glad she told us this place will become a nightclub starting January, we will be back!

Pleasant little surprise. We were in town for a conference and decided to stop in after a friendly conversation with the doorman. He recommended the tuna aguachile and wagyu burger. Both were amazing. Service was friendly and excellent. Would definitely come back the next time I’m in town. Definitely recommend.
