Madeira, Portugal, Dining Guide to the Food & Drink Scene | Eater

"A land-focused counterpart to the chef’s seafood venue, this intimate counter-style spot features a dry-aging refrigerator, a chef’s-table-like counter and a predominantly local clientele; standout items include an excellent local lamb and thoughtful pairings with rare local table wines." - Austin Bush

We visited Kampo twice. Fantastic meat both times, definitely among the best in Madeira. The ribeye steak was delicious, though the portion size varied between visits. The only downside is the noise; it gets quite loud inside. Still, if you're after top-quality meat, Kampo is well worth it.

We had dinner at Kampo and chose the Chef’s Table experience — highly recommended, but be sure to book in advance, as it’s essential! The food was excellent — the ravioli was delicate and full of flavor, and the dessert (something called White) was a beautiful surprise, both visually and in taste. The wine selection was great, perfectly complementing the dishes. We also ordered cocktails, but unfortunately, they didn’t live up to the rest of the experience. One small service hiccup: we asked for the cocktails to come before the meal, but they arrived almost simultaneously with the food. That said, the service overall was very professional and attentive. The atmosphere is very modern and stylish, and the experience is full of unexpected flavor combinations that truly surprise and delight. Would I recommend Kampo? 100%. It’s a must-visit spot in Madeira if you’re into creative cuisine and a refined dining experience.

The staff were great — worked well as a team and supported each other throughout the service. We arrived at the beginning of dinner. What surprised us most were the dishes we received. The carpaccio was actually very tasty, but definitely not the kind of dish you should order on a date. It had stale croutons inside, giving the impression that I’d ordered beer snacks at a bar rather than a starter at a restaurant. The meat ravioli: this was not ravioli — it was more like a goulash without potatoes. You get a piece of meat, a single slice of dough, and something resembling a butter yolk on top. Black rice with octopus and shrimp: apparently the chef has never seen real black rice. What we got was a bowl of “cuttlefish ink soup” with rice floating inside. It was terrible. I didn’t even try the rice (especially not when you’re dining with company — you’ll end up with pitch-black teeth. Avoid jokes at all costs, or you’ll find yourself exposing your dark grin). I only ate the shrimp and the octopus. The dessert with a ball on top — I’d call it a “diabetic nightmare” — pure sugar, with no trace of flavor balance. The other citrus dessert was also unbalanced — each component felt isolated and disconnected. All in all: €160 and a ruined impression of cuisine in Madeira.

Absolutely spectacular food! We were sorry we didn’t come hungrier as there was so much more we would have loved to try. The tacos exceeded all expectations 😍 The only thing is one of us has a mild nut allergy at the table (and informed staff at the start) but dessert came with peanuts on top. We understand this was an oversight but could be very dangerous for someone with severe anaphylactic allergies.

It’s pure indulgence! I loved every dish cooked and served with love. Chef and her team are like perfectly synced orchestra. 10 out of 10! HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

With all great reviews on google we had high expectation about Kampo. First of all I ordered a cocktail Darquerie yuzu I was exciting cuz I love yuzu but my drink had no taste of yuzu at all but a huge piece of lemon zest it’s wrong since it’s yuzu cocktail but had no taste of yuzu. We order 3 appetizers bread, ravioli oxtail and beef tartare. They were all EXCELLENCE. We were so excited for main courses we ordered ribeyes steak, fish with tomyum sauce and octopus with rice and squid ink. We asked medium for our steak but it turned out well done but it’s tender and good. The fish and tom yum sauce was a disaster sauce missing flavor, needed to be more creamy and the fish was very plain. Octopus with rice and squid ink some slices of squid on a big bowl of black rice. Black rice is well done for flavour and cooking but missing of octopus. Overall, my friends and I were disappointed on cocktails and main courses which ended up we had to cancel our reservation at Akua( one of chef Júlio fish and seafood restaurant) the service was excellence.

Came here initially for the steak as it was recommended to me, but I was persuaded to try out their not so traditional burger and it did not disappoint! The taste was really good, well prepped and simply delicious. I tried the tuna tartar and the ox belly tacos, which I would recommend too, very tasty. For dessert, I went with the dark chocolate with salted caramel, I wouldn’t have mined the second one. Absolutely amazing experience, from the moment they greet you, until the end. The staff is just wonderful. Eat at the bar if you could, you won’t be disappointed, I enjoyed watching them work, it was a show for me! Will definitely come back ;)

We came to celebrate my husband birthday. I personally approached the staff and clearly said I wanted to arrange a surprise — something small but memorable. Unfortunately, the result felt very underwhelming. At the end of the evening, a shy waitress came over alone, softly said “Happy Birthday” and placed a dessert with a candle — no energy, no celebration. Then we were charged €9 for it. Honestly, I expected at least a warm gesture from the team — not a quiet moment and a bill. We specifically chose this restaurant for the occasion based on its excellent reviews and higher-end positioning. The T-bone steak was outstanding, but the service didn’t match the level we anticipated for such a special evening.
