Madeira, Portugal, Dining Guide to the Food & Drink Scene | Eater

"A land-focused counterpart to the chef’s seafood venue, this intimate counter-style spot features a dry-aging refrigerator, a chef’s-table-like counter and a predominantly local clientele; standout items include an excellent local lamb and thoughtful pairings with rare local table wines." - Austin Bush

I’m absolutely thrilled! A must-visit place for dinner. The whole chain of these restaurants is great, but we chose this one for our last evening in Madeira — and it was the perfect decision. There were five of us, and my friend and I ordered the “To Share” menu for two — six dishes for €98. I can’t even describe how delicious and satisfying it was. Each dish was unique in presentation, balance, and taste. For that price, such a tasting menu for two is truly exceptional. Thank you for the perfect ending to our vacation!

Incredible food, great value for money and fantastic service. Really recommend Kampo! Absolutely loved the steak tartar, the oxtail tacos and the oxtail ravioli! Our waiter was so helpful, teaching us about Madeira wine and giving us recommendations for what would pair well with our food! Such a great experience, would definitely go back again!

We booked the restaurant and very happy with the service. We had restricted vegetarian dietary and the restaurant made our dining experience very smooth and attention to detail. We had mushrooms, seaweed rice and grill vegetables for our vegetarian friends. We also had the Ox belly tacos, Tbone steaks and chips on the side. All of our dishes are delicious with Dark chocolate desserts. Thank you for your lovely service. We had an amazing time.

My partner and I visited this restaurant three times within a single week — and for good reason. The overall experience was consistently excellent. I ordered the beef burger with foie gras, which was outstanding: perfectly cooked, rich in flavor, and beautifully balanced. As a starter, we shared a tuna tartare that was truly exceptional — fresh, refined, and expertly seasoned. When we first arrived without a reservation, we were asked to wait at the bar. The host handled the situation with remarkable professionalism and kindness, and we were seated within about twenty minutes. The cocktails were also excellent, crafted with real attention to detail. Overall, an exceptional dining experience — both in terms of food and service. Highly recommended

We were sat at the bar top where the chefs prepare the food which was amazing. It was great to see how much compassion the workers have into making and preparing the food. The food itself was pretty good. We got the dry aged ribeye to split. We asked for medium, but came out a bit more rare, it was very good either way. The steak came with fries, a tomato and onion salad, and pickles. The service was ok. The hostess did mention that I had a birthday, The waitress did not which is ok But still would’ve been nice since it was on the reservation. No birthday dessert or option was offered, but I do realize a lot of places don’t do it so that is not taking away from the rating. The hostess and bussers were fabulous and nice But the waitress had an attitude the entire time and was very confusing. She first Was upset that we weren’t ordering an appetizer and saying we would be hungry and was trying to push bread on us and then after when we wanted to ribeye, she was pushing for us to only get one due to the size and that we would be too full(Which was fine because it was big and we saved money but we easily could’ve finished two) And then once we picked one dinner, she then was upset we didn’t order an appetizer again. It might just be her personality, but a bit more hospitality goes a long way. We were uncomfortable after the initial interaction And had no interest in ordering a dessert after(which she also was upset over). Overall, great atmosphere and food, just not great server. Ps we got the mango mojito and cinnamon Caipirinha were both good and reasonably priced.

The place was just okay. It was quite noisy, and the steak was overcooked (asked for medium, but it came closer to well done), and the meat quality could be better. The ravioli was actually very good. Overall, it’s not a bad place — worth visiting once, but not something I’d rush back to.

This upmarket restaurant offers both à la carte and a chef’s sharing menu. We opted for the latter. The tuna course was a bit on the strong, fishy side for our taste and, unfortunately, contained a small scale. The second dish was pleasant, though the many components made it hard to identify each element. The absolute highlight of the evening was the oxtail – beautifully cooked, with a rich, flavorful sauce, well-prepared vegetables, and smooth mashed potatoes. Truly excellent! Dessert combined white chocolate, passionfruit, brownie, and a black olive sauce. The olive pairing wasn’t to our taste, though that may be personal preference. If the dishes were refined a touch more and the presentation elevated, this place could really shine. Service was friendly and attentive, the pacing of the dinner was spot-on, and the atmosphere was lovely. 📍 Tip: Situated right in the center of Funchal. If you’d like to explore it for yourself, make a reservation in advance.

The best experience we had in Funchal the teams both service and kitchen are amazing. The young Chef gives great explanations. Favorite the foie but also try the ravioli and the tuna cone.
