My wife and I recently dined at Kanela, and we had a wonderful experience. The food was truly enjoyable, with the waffles standing out as particularly delicious—crispy and full of flavor. The service was consistently good, making us feel well taken care of throughout our meal. We also appreciated the strong drinks, which complemented our meal perfectly. The atmosphere was decent, providing a comfortable setting for our breakfast. Overall, Kanela is a great spot for a satisfying meal, and we will definitely be returning! This place is clean and organized well. Our server was very nice and welcoming. We ordered a burrito and a skillet. I ordered a latte with oak milk but it was very bland, I didn’t like it. The cappuccino was regular milk tastes very good though. The burrito was packed with eggs. Very flavorful.

I'm not sure why this place has 4.1 on here, it's a solid 5. Had the best breakfast I've ever eaten here. Service was great and my bloody was good, husband loved his Greek frappe. I wish we had a Kanela in Upstate NY. I had the Red Velvet French Toast, husband got the Crabcake Benedict, and we had a side of black pepper bacon. This is a must try place.

It’s a good place for a breakfast, in summers they open the outdoor seating too so that people can enjoy the sun and have the breakfast.. it’s an American breakfast place love the egg fried sandwich and their spicy sangria too…if you live around the block it’s a place to try …it right near the Michigan lake canal and next to the riverside walk of Chicago.

This place is very tiny and they do not manage the waiting patrons well. There is no list to put your name on. You are expected to work out a first come, first serve line with the random strangers also waiting outside and then only send in 6 people at a time. No one from the staff helps organize this. Just left to duke it out with folks you hope are nice and reasonable. The food was okay. It definitely wasn't worth the wait. The service from the waitress was very slow. It took so long to get a menu that we just looked it up online to be ready to order whenever the waitress showed up. The food did come super quick though once we were able to order. I would not recommend this spot. It's not terrible, but with so much choice in the city, I would go elsewhere.

Now let's talk about the food - it was simply outstanding! The menu had a wide variety of options, from classic brunch staples to unique and creative dishes. Each plate was beautifully presented, and the flavors were absolutely delicious. Trust me, you won't be disappointed if you give this place a try!

I had a mixed experience, and I will not be coming back. The food was tasty and prepared to order (our group had spicy feta omelette, waffle, and biscuit and gravy.) Excellent very strong coffee. Our server was friendly and attentive. However, the person cleaning the tables was persistently rude. Unfortunately, the store was not adequately clean: the menus were greasy, and there were plenty of flies (!) coming in from the door that the staff kept open.

Kanela Breakfast Club in Chicago was such a delightful spot! The location was beautiful, with windows everywhere that allowed you to take in the city while enjoying a cozy atmosphere. One thing that stood out to me about Chicago is how often Pepsi products are available compared to Coke, and Kanela had them--which made me so happy. Now, onto the food! I ordered their banana nut pancakes with Nutella and their fried chicken and waffles. The pancakes were incredible--soft, fluffy, and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The Nutella was the perfect touch, so I decided to skip the syrup since I felt it would have made them too sweet. Honestly, they didn't need anything extra! As for the fried chicken and waffles, the chicken was perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The waffles were light and fluffy, and the honey sriracha sauce added just the right kick to tie everything together. I loved it! The service was just as impressive as the food. Our server was fantastic, and the whole experience left me eager to come back and explore more of their menu. Kanela Breakfast Club is definitely a place I'd recommend to anyone visiting Chicago!

I always order from the Andersonville location, but today, when I did that, the confirmation page said it was from the Old Town location. So, I rang the OT location and the person on the phone had a horrible customer service voice, seemed annoyed more than trying to simply LISTEN and find out the issue. After a couple tries, I said: I just want to know if you have an order for me at the OT location. Then, she finally got it (and her English was perfect by the way so this wasn't a language issue). When she said, no my order was not at the OT location, I said thank you and before I finished those two words, she hung up. Two points: Huh? Customer service at the Andersonville location is always (in my experience) very high. Aside from the higher prices and smaller portions due to inflation and higher labor costs, I am a fan. And... the glitch in their system - with the incorrect location on the order confirmation page (which I mentioned to the OT person) - is an issue. But I guess she didn't really care about that? Hey owner, I have heard positive stories about you over the past years I've been a customer, so please handle that. It's not only annoying but wastes your time and the time of your online customers... many thanks. I know this is a middle-class problem. BUT we all work hard for our money (I am in hospitality so I know how hard everyone in this business works), and to be treated like a person is crucial. Right? Or am I a small voice in a world of not giving a flying you-know-what. Well, I still care. Go to Andersonville. They rock.

Love the cinnamon cocktail. Very in for the fall! Just right amount of cinnamon and coffee flavor Ordered the crab cake egg Benedict: crab cake is very savory and crispy. Potato is baked really crispy as well. Good amount of avocado to balance the texture. Highly recommend. Very attentive waitress and nice little street corner restaurant

Honestly, everything was lacking. The service was below sub-par, the food was ok, the drinks were mid. I couldn't even enjoy our drink carafe bc it wasn't mixed properly. 3/5 would not recommend.

Mid-Monday morning before we catch our flight... so glad we made the short walk to this spot. We were greeted immediately by a very nice young lady who was also our server. They have free wifi and an online menu you'll need to scan the code for. Great choices for adults and kids. The diner itself is open with lots of seating. On a nice day, there's plenty of outdoor space as well. We tried the churro waffle, lemon-blueberry pancakes, chicken & waffles, the salmon lox bagel, and thus little one got a full breakfast--pancake, bacon, & egg. EVERYTHING was truly delicious! Serving size was food for someone hungry! The chicken wasn't too salty and was seasoned nicely! The waffles were a super airy texture that melted in your mouth!

We stopped here for breakfast on Sunday before we went to Navy Pier. We were surprised that we walked right in and were seated right away. The staff was friendly and attentive, the place had nice vibe, there was really nice outside seating, but we sat inside. There were 5 of us and we all ordered something different. I got the chicken and waffles and it was delicious! Maybe one of the best versions of it, I've tried it in many restaurants. The chicken things were juicy and crunchy. The waffle was light and wasn't limp, it had a nice crisp outside. It was served with maple syrup and Sriracha honey on the side. It was topped with green onions, which was a nice touch. Would order again!!! My boyfriend ordered the Lorraine scramble with potatoes and sourdough toast. The scramble had caramelized onions (he said it was the "star of the dish") bacon, scallions and Swiss cheese. We also ordered the 3 egg breakfast with bacon,toast, and fruit. She enjoyed that very much. There was also a Chorizo breakfast burrito with potatoes, French toast (plain for a child) and a short stack of pancakes. Everyone seemed to really enjoy their breakfast. I think it might have been my favorite meal while we were in town.

Visiting Chicago and found this place online--I'm so glad I did! The atmosphere was great, and the food was delicious. Our server was incredibly sweet and attentive. We'll definitely be coming back!

Stopped here for some breakfast before I started my day exploring Chicago. It was within walking distance from my hotel which was a plus. Nice interior with a laid back vibe. Staff were freindly and service was fast. The food was decent. My favorite thing from my order was their Chai latte 10/10, I even ordered one to go. Overall it was ok.

We came for brunch, we had the chicken and waffles and a cinnamon roll. Food was on point and came out pretty quickly.

Stopped in before an appointment and had a breakfast burrito with bacon. Overall it was fine, but nothing to write home about. Cheese was uninspiring and didn't add much flavor, the avocado was fresh but cut too thickly. Side of fruit wasn't impressive - strawberries looked and tasted pretty sad and pineapple was also poorly looking. Will I be back? Probably not, but maybe it was an off day?

Streeterville brunch spots are quite nice :) in general, something I've noticed is that the food is generally less heavy here, and the coffee (namely the cold brew) is smooth and not too bitter. I think the atmosphere is in between Beatrix and Cupitol, meaning it is slightly less formal but still a sit-in where servers come to your table. I really enjoyed the egg white omelette. Would recommend!

Kanela is in a great spot that is in need of breakfast & lunch options. It's proximity to Navy Pier makes me think they will catch a lot of tourists. There are also a ton of residential buildings to service. The food is always delicious. I highly recommend the cinnamon roll! On my last visit, I was picking up a to-go order for a small event. The order was placed and paid for online a couple of days before. I called the morning of to re-confirm that I was on my way to pick up the order. The guy immediately told me I had to go to the Wicker Park location because they do catering. I explained it is a small order so it might be considered a to-go order. He just kept telling me to go across town. I insisted he check because my invoice had his address not the location a couple miles away. My event was starting in 30 minutes so every minute counts. He went and checked and found my order. I went in to pick up the order that wasn't ready because they had not seen that they had my order. They guy I spoke to on the phone was very nice and apologetic. However, my advice is lead with yes. Check before you say no. Had I chased across town to find that the order was at the original location, it would have been a disaster.

My husband got the Americano and I had the mimosa. Mimosa was yummy!! The cafe Americano was probably the best coffee ever. Definitely recommend. We ordered the chicken and waffles, the cinnamon roll and the chorizo and eggs. All delicious. We cleaned our plates. The Cinnamon roll is a must!!!! The waiter was really patient and sweet. Answered all of our questions with a smile and always was polite. We asked a local if Kanela was good and he recommended it. It was either this place or yolk. We were told not to go to yolk, it's horrible. His words! The place is clean and spacious. It's definitely a brunch spot worth checking out.

Super convenient and tasty breakfast nook to stop over after a visit at the navy pier. We had great service, and the food came out incredibly fast. Our meals were filling and fresh...and the warmth doesn't hurt.

I was in town for a work trip and stopped here for breakfast. It was a great decision. I am not trying to exaggerate here, but the Lorraine Scramble was one of the tastiest scrambles I have ever had. It had peppered bacon, caramelized onions, and Swiss cheese. The ingredients meshed so perfectly together, I was so impressed with every bite. I got 2 coffees: Freddo Espresso and the French Press. The Freddo Espresso is a frothed iced espresso drink. It was tasty, but if you don't like a full coffee taste, it's def not for you. The French Press was just a nice to have extra coffee! The service was quick and efficient. Inside there are cute tables and even a coffee bar to sit at. There definitely seemed to be a morning rush coming in as I was leaving mid morning. Wish I had this place near me!

Beautiful spot, close to the river, with a high energy vibe. We got the chorizo and eggs, goat cheese omelet, and fried chicken sandwich. We also got a pitcher of strawberry mimosas (yummm), which ended up being way more mimosa for cheaper than if we had all ordered one, so def do that. The food was excellent, but you can get better for the same price. The wait staff was also very friendly and upbeat

this was my 3rd time at Kanela and it's a great trad brunch spot! the food hasn't yet missed the mark and i like how open the interior is. its never too loud so its a great place to catch up with friends! i got the chorizo and eggs this time which were great! i've had the benedict's before and both are amazing, especially the crab cake one. i do want to note the side of fruit is mostly melon, as you might expect, which is a little disappointing so i usually opt for the potatoes. i wish they had a better side of fruit though. also, the mimosa pitcher is an amazing deal. if you're with a group of 3, there's enough for 3-4 glasses each for only $1 more per person that just one glass!

I came here for breakfast with my boyfriend while we were staying in Old Towne. I was surprised we even got seated because it was packed. We both got the red velvet french toast which is perfect for anybody with a major sweeth tooth! This place is so cute and I love that they play friends on the tv- it makes it feel very cozy.

Stay away ! Thank me later. By far the worst place in Chicago . Chilaquiles are literally old tortilla chips sprinkled with bottle nasty salsa verde ! The Hispanic lady that got offended when I talked to her in Spanish , please fix your attitude!

We enjoy every meal of the day. But breakfast, well ,that holds a special place. We were in town and wanted to check this place out. The hostess was so sweet and accommodating. We were sat outside. Sad to say that delightfulness did not pour over to our server. Not pleasant at all. At least not to us. The food was just ok, which we could've looked passed if the service had been better.

Had breakfast here 2 of the 5 days we were visiting in Chicago. Everything was great but the Kanela cinnamon roll was absolutely divine!! (Apologies for the partially eaten roll in the picture. Didn't realize it was picture worthy until after i took the first bite.)

Had a breakfast with my friend there recently. We sat outside and enjoyed the street view there. As neither of us were hungry we only ordered one entrée, the California Benedict, and a side of Greek yogurt without honey. Food and service were both of standard quality. The idea of putting avocado on the English muffin was interesting to me, and tasted not bad. They also put the right amount of hollandaise sauce onto the poached eggs--not too much. The cereal in the Greek yogurt was a bit too sweet for me but everything else was good. Most importantly the main ingredient--the yogurt tasted fresh and not sweet at all. Besides, we got our food pretty quickly, in no more than 5min. So in general it is a good place to go to if you want to have a quick, pleasant but standard breakfast. If you are looking for something very creative look for somewhere else :)

The food was delicious! I just didn't like the service, it felt like the waiter didn't want to be there, not even looking to us. I would come back just for the food, but knowing that the service is not great!

Had a such a good breakfast at Kanela recently! We stopped by on a Saturday around 11:30 and luckily had no wait time for a party of two. After getting seated we ordered some coffee and orange juice. For meals I ordered the biscuits and gravy and my SO ordered the fried egg sandwich. He said it's one of the best breakfast sandwiches he's had! And I really enjoyed my biscuits and gravy. The rosemary in the gravy was such a nice touch. A great breakfast spot in Chicago if you're looking for a solid meal! I'll definitely be back.

Very good breakfast and good coffee options. The Goat Cheese Omelette, California Eggs Benedict, Crab Cakes Eggs Benedict and Lemon Blurberry Pancakes were very good. Service was good and prices were reasonable.

Location is amazing for this breakfast joint, but the food was just fine. They have some unique menu items, but I do think it could be done better. The rosemary potatoes were a little stale. The food isn't enough to bring me back, but I did like how walkable it was to the pier, and a bunch of businesses, but don't get this confused with it being near the pier, there is not a water view. There is not great parking near by either, so keep that in mind if you have a car. We were both excited to try the juices from here, I got the sunrise, while my boyfriend ordered a pear one. Not sure what happened but we didn't get the pear one, we got a orange juice with cayenne in it, which was on the menu, it just wasn't what we ordered. Once we brought it up to the waitress she denied that it could be the wrong drink and very hesitantly took it back and placed an order for the correct one. I am not normally one to send things back, but something like a spicy juice is pretty noticeably different - especially when there are red flakes (cayenne) floating in it. Also the day we went they were out of their CBD to infuse in the juices, which was disappointing but not a deal breaker. Overall, it was just fine of a location, we had a 30 minute wait on a Saturday, which isn't too bad for a breakfast place. I don't know that I will go back, but I imagine it is an easy spot for tourist and first time visitors in the area.

We had an overall pleasant experience. Our waitress was great and very friendly. It was nice enough to sit outside, so we were able to avoid the wait. The coffee was good, and the food was as expected. Nothing super spectacular or uncommon on the menu, but there's nothing wrong with the basics. The potatoes were quite good! The hollandaise had just a little bit of a kick too it. I opted to add bacon, and the bacon was great. A solid brunch spot. Not sure where the alleged street parking is though LOL. There is a parking garage next door, and thanks to online reservations, we paid only $12 instead of the $30.

Found this little gem just a small walk away from our hotel. The churro waffle is out of control! I cannot wait to return to Chicago because we will be coming back here for sure!!! If you are in the area this is a great spot for breakfast or brunch, you won't be disappointed !!

We went in today for Sunday brunch and had a great experience! The restaurant was busy but there were a few tables empty, so we got seated in just a few minutes. They were a little disorganized with seating, as people were coming in from two doors. But this was a minor inconvenience. The restaurant itself was a small/medium size. The service was good, our server was friendly and we didn't feel rushed at all, which can be a thing at a lot of restaurants. As for the food, I got the red velvet pancakes and my boyfriend got 3 poached eggs on toast with a side of potatoes. The red velvet pancakes were not a huuuge portion, but they were very filling. They were fluffy and flavorful. I loved them!! Highly recommend if you've got a sweet tooth! The potatoes in the 3 eggs with meat were so yummy & were perfectly seasoned! I kept eating them off my boyfriend's plate eggs were also perfectly poached. Overall, we loved this restaurant and the food! We will be back

Potato was from yesterday, avocado overripe, California Benedict was so bitter. I'm disappointed. Service was ok. Ambiance is clear but smell garlic, you have to change your clothes after your breakfast.

Food: The spicy feta omelette is delicious! The Kanela French toast was also good (my husband loved it, although I didn't find it spectacular). Service: a bit slow, took time for us to be seated even though the place wasn't busy on a weekday morning. We also weren't told the QR code for menus was posted on one corner of the table (we also didn't see it as we sat on the other end), would have been nice to know when we were seated. Food came out quickly though. We paid before we finished eating just so we could get out fast, and of course never saw our waiter again after that (I would have loved a refill on my coffee). Overall: would try again to explore the menu since the food was tasty!

Definitely a wait. Minimal bar seating so even trying to wait for a stool was difficult. The breakfast is solid though. I went simple with scrambled eggs and toast and was very happy. Service was great and attentive considering how busy they were. Overall great experience.

The food quality has begun to decline. I used to love this place but it's not the same. This last time we ordered 3 egg dishes and all 3 lacked basic amount of salt and pepper.

Went here for brunch on a Sunday while visiting Chicago. There was no wait time. The waitress was very nonchalant. The glassware seemed rather used and distressed. The food was just OK. I don't think I'll be visiting this place again if in Chicago.

Was staying at the W and looking for a good brunch option within walking distance. I was solo and ended walking straight in to an open seat at the bar at around 2:30pm on a Sunday. Servers were a bit slow to acknowledge me but once they did the service was great. I ended up ordering a side of sausage and eggs along with the red velvet French toast. The food came out insanely fast like 5-7 minutes. Sausage and eggs both were cooked to perfection! The red velvet French toast was good but I probably wouldn't order it again. Maybe I was the cinnamon topping that made it over the top sweet. Overall the vibe is as nice and I was happy with the food. Would pop back in if I'm ever back in the area.

Had the egg white veggie omelet with a side green salad and it was so good. I also got the pumpkin spice latte and it was delicious. Not only was the food good, but the service was even better. Out waitress kept filling our pitcher of water, brining us napkins and asked us twice how are meal was or if we needed anything else. I would for sure tell anyone to go to this place as the menu has a wide variety of breakfast and lunch food as well as specialty alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks.

Jose was an amazing server with a very nice smile! The banana nut pancakes and biscuits and gravy were 10/10 would go again!

Great customer service and food was delicious! I was greeted upon arrival and seated immediately. I ordered the chilaquiles (very yummy btw) and a chai latte. Probably one of my favorite breakfast spots in Chicago.

Food: Ordered avocado toast with a side of poached eggs. Poached eggs were overdone and the avocado was turning gray. The waffles were good though. For an upscale Chicago breakfast place, I'd figure poached eggs and avocado toast would be a good staple. Service: the automatic door for handicapped and strollers was locked. So I kept waving down the staff to open it. In the end, another guest let me in. Then I waited at the hostess stand. No one came for a while so I had to go to a counter to ask if they were still serving. Waitress was nice but the people behind the counter seemed like they couldn't be bothered Ambiance: it's pretty, not the most instagrammable, but that's ok. TLDR: It's disappointing. For the price, it's super disappointing. Better brunch places elsewhere.

We live across the street from this place. There is always a line. It is diner vibe but with high ceiling and healthier food options than the average diner. It is first come first serve so have to get there early. The food is generally good. It won't blow your mind but it is fresh with decent selection.

Great experience all around. We were in a hurry and our server Jorge did an awesome job getting our order in and our food to our table. The monkey bread was different than we expected but it was delicious in its own way. All four of us loved what we ordered. The only down side was no Diet Coke... If you are in the area definitely try it out!

Highly recommend this brunch spot for any weekend out and about. Their service was very timely. The space allowed lots of natural light from the city, which protected the bright interior. Decor was good with more natural aesthetics and colors. The food was top tier. The biscuits and gravy had some of the biggest biscuits I've ever seen with that dish. Their strawberry orange mimosas definitely elevated the original cocktail with a level of freshness. Definitely recommend for a group up to 4 as it is a smaller establishment.
