Yelp
Kanji popped on my radar a few times, mainly due to being ~hot and new~ since they just opened about 2 months ago, but also because they offered a selection of both Chinese and Japanese fare. I convinced my partner to try it as our to-go date night du semaine (of the week).
We scoured the menu and decided on a few things:
1. Szechuan Wonton with Chili Oil (10) - because wontons with chili oil sound like fun mouth fire!
2.General Chicken (Asked for very spicy) - because I admittedly had a hankering for this Americanized dish. HA!
3. Black Pepper Beef (Asked for med spicy) - something new to try.
4. Caterpillar Roll - my covert way of getting my partner to have some sushi with me! :O
The ordering went very well. She was wide-smile-thru-the-phone friendly, attentive, and gave us the exact total and estimated wait time without asking.
The interior of the restaurant was clean and slightly quiet for a Saturday night, but I didn't mind! We rushed back with our food and unpacked.
First up, wontons. I think the container was just overfilled with solid spices that threw me for a mouth twist initially. My tip, mix the liquid and dust off excess solids, as needed. The wontons themselves did not pack any strong flavorings but were spicy when adequately soaked in the oil. Personally, we would pass in favor of the entrees (or rolls ;) ) next time.
Next, the General. The cornerstone of every wanna eat Chinese but no duck appetite (although I love :duck:). We loved this dish. It was strong on flavor and you could tell the chickens had some good living before ending up in a food rectangle. Definitely not spicy as asked. I would like to try again and ask for a spicy boost!
Black. Pepper. Steak. This surprised me when I first popped the lid off the container. It was more gravy-like than I expected, but pepperrrrrrr indeed. I was peppered and medium-hot spicy like a tasty Grandma's stovetop special. And, the mushroommmmssss were delish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I definitely hunted the container solely to yoink those 'shrooms... and shared when I could, of course. Highly recommend.
Last but first in my heart, Caterpillar Roll. My partner doesn't do the raw fish or sushi in general thing, but this was super duper yum for both of us. The avocado on top was so smooth it melted as it hit my palate. The bbq eel inside was amazing like all eel is supposed to be. I would love to get plenty (is 17 too much?) of these next time. It is also competitively priced (read as under most competitors) so that's another ribbon in the hat, wheel on the wagon, whatever you want to say. It's YUMMMM.
All in all, great place if you feel like American Chinese or some sushi rolls, or both!!
PS - rice is extra :).
