Kantýna - Review - New Town - Prague - The Infatuation

"Leave the vegetarians at home for this meal. Housed in an old bank building just off of Wenceslas Square, Kantýna really leans hard into the stereotype of Czech cuisine’s proclivity for pretending vegetables don’t exist. There’ssteak, sausage, pastrami pig heart, smoked beef tongue, beef tartar, meatloaf, roasted pork belly, and arguably the best burger in Prague, plus big mugs of Pilsner Urquell. Order at the counter and you’ll be given a femur bone of some edible beast with a number on it. From there, grab a table and wait for your mountain of meat to arrive. The restaurant doesn’t put much thought into dessert, but at this point, you may want to forgo sweets to keep your cholesterol in check." - David Farley

Google
Busy Tourist Spot – “Good food and beer, but expensive” We visited before the usual dinner rush expecting a quieter experience, but the place was already absolutely packed. Clearly a very popular spot with tourists, which says a lot about its reputation. The food and beer were good, and we enjoyed the overall atmosphere, but the prices felt steep—over £40 per person for a meal and a single drink. The quality was decent, but I’m not convinced it justified the cost. This isn’t London, Paris, or New York, so I expected more reasonable pricing for the area. Worth a visit if you don’t mind paying a premium, but otherwise be prepared for a higher-than-expected bill.

Food here is great and I would go again and again for it. It's not for the meek however, The service is famously unfriendly, and I have marked down as my friend got charged a meat weight for her vegetables , and then we're added again as a side , but she was too polite and embarrassed to complain with the language barrier. You ask for what you want , completely price blind and it is weighed and marked on a card. I do love the food though. But 2 years ago I paid £15 for a heaving plate and this year the cost had almost doubled to £29 for a similar sized portion. I will say it's a great place for meat lovers however and I will go again a third time if ever in Prague.

Google
This was our favourite meal in Prague (and we have not had any bad ones!). The carpaccio and steak tartar were exceptional and we also pushed the boat out and had a massive rib eye steak between us. The butcher kept trying to warn me it was too big but we smashed it no problem! I like that you can splurge if you want but also get very reasonable meals. Wine and beer also great. Will definitely come back on our next visit.

Google
The best carpaccio in Prague. Kantýna, part of the renowned Ambiente restaurant group, is without a doubt, one of my favorite spots in Prague and a must-visit for any serious meat lover. The atmosphere is unique, operating on a refined canteen-style concept where you interact directly with the butcher and kitchen staff to select your cuts and portion sizes, paying for exactly what you get by weight. The food quality is stellar, and the beef, in particular, is magnificent. I can confidently say they serve the best carpaccio in the city—it is the reason I am a regular visitor. The beef tartare is also superb, fresh, and perfectly seasoned, and every other meat offering we've tried has been equally impressive. A huge advantage is the butcher station where you can select a raw steak cut and have them grill it for you on the spot. While the experience is expensive, the quality make it absolutely worth the price. Practical Tips: The restaurant gets extremely busy, especially on Friday and Sunday evenings. If possible, I highly recommend visiting for lunch during the week to enjoy the atmosphere and food without the long wait times. Also, be aware that their excellent draft beer has a famously intense and distinctive flavor—it truly packs a punch and is definitely not for the faint of heart! This is an essential dining experience in Prague. Highly recommended!

Google
We really enjoyed eating at this restaurant. The first night we came we only tried Beef Tartar and the Bone Marrow. I loved the fresh taste of the Beef Tartar. The Bone Marrow was very fatty as it supposed to be. We were surprised by the atmosphere and the food that we decided to come here the next night. We loved the Beef Carpaccio! The Potatoes Pancakes were also good. The Duck Pate didn’t meet my expectations. The bread that came with the food was very delicious! We also tried Bread Pudding and it was okayish. However, the staffs that were serving the food wasn’t very nice. We ordered the wrong dessert but we were too intimidated to change it :(

Google
Kantyna was an absolute highlight! The place has its own unique charm — kind of a modern canteen vibe with self-service, relaxed atmosphere, and great energy. The food was outstanding. We had carpaccio and tartar, along with several sides like cucumber salad, pickled vegetables, and coleslaw. And let me say: the coleslaw was a 12/10 — probably the best we’ve ever had. The tartar was incredibly flavorful, and although the carpaccio slices were a bit thicker than we personally prefer, the meat quality was exceptional, so it still tasted amazing. Considering the top-notch ingredients and the very fair prices, this place is a real gem. Highly recommended — a well-deserved 5 stars.

Google
Typical Czech meat place, based on the past experience in public canteen. Good meat, good Beer. Not chaleap but good to try. Steak tartar, owen cooked beef ribs, cabage mince meatloaf. Good to try. Vejmrda fresh horseradish.. You are taking the empty receipt And the food is weighted. You pay the bill when leaving

Google
The atmosphere is incredible. The restaurant is located in an old bank building. There are three stations where you can order different things. One is dedicated exclusively to beer. I ordered a cheeseburger, which was fantastic. One of the best I've ever had. My Czech friend recommended I also order a "sznyt" beer. This is a style of pouring beer in which most of the foam is present. It was also delicious. The restaurant is perfect for anyone who loves meat dishes.

Yelp
Solid no frills choice! This is a locals place. No frills self service makes it a very efficient stop but with good home-style comfort food very welcome on chilly Fall days. They offer various types and styles of meat, vegetables and starch. They also serve beer, of course. It is cafeteria style so you pick your choices and are charged by quantity. Bills can be very reasonable but be mindful of how much you ask for as the price can escalate quickly if you load up on meat. The interior is clean and light with lots of arched ceilings. This is a perfect place for a casual midday stop with friends to share a meal and get on to going where you were going.

Yelp
We came at around 4pm to beat the rush. The tables were all partially full. The lady who does the serving isn't particularly nice or helpful but she gets the job done fast and organized. We got the potato pancakes, carpaccio and beef tartare. We obviously had to get a pilsner as well. The potato pancake was a huge letdown and we couldn't finish all of it. It was soggy and didn't have much potato flavour. It tasted kind of like a sponge. But a very salty sponge. It goes down well with the beer. The beef carpaccio is a MUST GET. It's super flavourful, they slice it there so it's fresh. They put a good amount of sauce and salt on top but it still manages to taste really good. The beef tartare got a bit stuck in my teeth but it was also good. There were bits of onion and oil in it. The bread went well with it. Another must get. Overall food was not expensive. You don't come here for the service but for the atmosphere and the drinking and of course the food. Get the beef tartare and carpaccio

Yelp
This was one of the restaurants that I was the most excited to visit and Kantyna did not disappoint. We were there very early afternoon and were blessed with a table. I ordered the beef carpaccio, the potato pancakes and the brisket. The rye bread with the carpaccio was divine and I really enjoyed the rye flavor in the potato pancakes. My husband and I both enjoyed the brisket. The atmosphere is pretty decent and it appears that a lot of locals enjoy the restaurant too. Of course, we both had pilsners with our meal. Next time, I am in Prague, I will come back and get more MEAT!!!!

Yelp
Really chill place to grab a beer and have lots of meat. We weren't sure what was going on at first but you get a card at the entrance and they'll mark what you order on there for payment at the end. Seating was on a first come, first serve basis. It gets quite busy during dinner time so come early if you don't want to wait around for a table.

Yelp
I got the pork belly, which was rich and had crispy skin. The meat was well-seasoned, and tasted higher quality than most others I've tasted. I also got a side of vegetables, which were slightly oily but cooked all the way through. The meal was slightly pricey (this plate had a small piece of meat and cost $10 USD) but I think the quality definitely stands out.

Yelp
This a butcher with an attached restaurant. This is a grown up version of a cafeteria. A meat lover's paradise. You have two options. Order from pre-made selections or go to the butcher counter and choose a cut for them to cook for you. I thought I wanted a steak to order, but the tri tip and tartare looked great. It did not disappoint. Tri tip is a tough cut, but they cooked it medium rare with a sprinkle of crystal salt. I liked both of my meat selections with a side of grilled veggies and potatoe pancakes. The tartare had a nice chew and chopped perfectly. The only thing I wanted was some pickles and some at component. However, I finished everything. The pancakes were slightly greasy and would probably taste better if it was made to order. Logistics, you get a card upon entering. You either place an order (butcher counter) or some made to order items such as the tartare. Drinks are from a separate counter. Self-seating. Large seating area but a very popular spot. Expect to wait on line but it moves quickly. About five minutes from the Mucha museum.

Yelp
Loved that no reservation was required though waiting for a seat (first come first served) can be a challenge, get that table and then grab a beer and select your food. While it seems like a food stall because it has separate areas for alcohol, butcher area and cooked foods, it was excellent. I chose my ribeye and they cooked it a perfect medium rare. The beef carpaccio melts in the mouth, the onion pancake was delish and the pork belly (get a small slice) was superb with its crisp skin. Loved it!!

Yelp
Awesome. Steak, burger, sausage, veggies for 36 usd. I love how they make their burgers here. Walk in, find a table, and then order at the counters. They bring the food to you, then pay at the front area.

Yelp
MEAT HEAVEN! You don't have to die to come here! Ate here twice during my stay because it was so good and affordable! The interior of this former bank is clean and modern. Staff are friendly all around. There is a wide selection of roasted meats, and even a deli counter where you can buy a fresh steak and they will cook it for you as you wish. Pricing is by weight, so mix it up! Step 1: Walk in, grab a white ticket from a cashier. This paper is your ticket to Meat Heaven! Step 2: Go to the bar order your drink of choice, the bartender will mark your ticket. Step 3: go to the food counter and smile at the meat master. They speak English, but you can also point to what you want...I highly recommend the Tri Tip, Brisket, mashed potatoes, and potato pancakes. The beef neck was good too, but other meats were better. Food person will mark your ticket. Step 4: grab a seat or standing table and enjoy! Step 5: Hand ticket to cashier and pay. I wish we had something like this in America, but we have too many dishonest people who would run off without paying their ticket. Must visit if you're ever in Prague!

Yelp
During a long day of walking we needed a little something to eat and drink...this place was on our list of places to try and we accidentally were super close. All I can say is I wish we were hungrier cuz based on what we tried I want to try everything. We had a potato pancake and chuck beef that was so tender it was hard to pick to with a fork. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. This place is a must!
google avatar

Yelp
No fancy analogies just slap the person next to you and for the love god get the steak tartare. The rest is up to you.
google avatar

Yelp
Restaurant next to the butcher. Get a ticket when you walk in. Order at the counter off the menu and off of what they have out. They either give it to you right away or will give you a number and bring it to your seat. They stamp your card and you pay on the way out. Beer is a different counter but handled the same way. Tartare here was really great. Also liked the potato pancake and pulled pork. Wife liked the brisket but I thought a bit dry. Was apparent that the pork cutlet had been sitting out for a bit. The lady taking the order definitely meant business. Not the friendliest of places but cool enough spot for some meat and beer.

Yelp
Kantyna is a rowdy self-service beer hall and cafeteria with a focus on meat dishes (they even have a butcher's counter out front). They offer a selection of prepared dishes, side dishes, and a steam table of meats carved to order and sold by weight. One of the most popular plates here is the Steak Tartare, made of super fresh minced beef mixed with garlic, juniper berries, and other spices, and served with grilled bread on the side. The tartare was super fresh and had a creamy texture, and we also got sides of pickled vegetables (cabbage, onions, cucumber, carrots, radishes) and coleslaw (shredded carrots/cabbage in a creamy dressing) to go along. You could help yourself to endless slices of country bread at the counter, and the atmosphere was fun and loud!

Yelp
Not sure what the rave was about. It's a neat establishment, friendly service, and food was ok - not amazing as we had hoped. One downside was the checkout person charged us for an additional dish that we didn't get and noticed after we had paid. We were able to get a refund but shady af...

Yelp
This place was awesome. A must try when visiting Prague. We got to try this place during a food tour in Prague. The items that we got to try were beef sausage, bread, mustard, pulled beef, grilled vegetable, potato pancake "bramborák", and camping salad. Everything was awesome. The staff was even great and tried very hard to make sure they communicated clearly to us. We enjoyed this place so much that we came back two days later for dinner.

Yelp
Recommended by friends who visited Prague earlier this year, Kantyna is a place where meat dreams are made. It's all fun, fashioned as a dining hall from the communist era, and there's plenty of meat, side dishes, and beer to try. They all speak english, not that they need to, but made it really easy to understand what everything was. As one would expect, the pieces on the menu that took the longest (steak cooked to order versus the "buffet" style meat that is ready when you come up) was the most delicious. The carpaccio, raw steak, was amazingly delicious. My first time trying it and the two sauces they drizzle over everything was sooooooo good. The burger was delicious and juicy and grilled to perfection, but plain. So, do it for the meat. The steak I got was marbled and delicious. I wish I could remember what cut it was, but I went up to the counter and the worker said I want this one. He was absolutely correct. Added the coffee sauce to it which was pretty solid, but not my favorite. Large caveat that I don't like coffee in general. I believe there were two main types of beer on tap, and even with the wait times for the cooked-to-order food, we had as much meat as our arteries could handle within the span of 40 minutes. Would be fun to come back with a big group and try out more of the sides. I didn't want to waste my stomach space with only two people this time around.

Yelp
Nice place for a quick bite. Also food is very reasonably priced. They charge you by the weight. A few minutes from the Mucha Museum. I had the sekana or meatloaf with mashed potatoes. It's delicious.

Yelp
This place came highly recommended from a couple of sources, including the local tour guides that did our walking tour. Definitely would recommend stopping by! It's a "self-service" beer hall, apart from a butcher counter up front where you can pick your own cuts of meat and have them cook it for you, there's also a steamtable with a variety of meats and sides to pick from, plus a beverage counter with a whole assortment of beers and other beverages. We only got food from the counter (not the shop) - a beef tartare plate, an assortment of meats, and some sides. Beef Tartare - great quality meat. I'm used to tartare with more accoutrements / finishings but this was almost just meat with some onions, served with bread Meats - we got pulled pork (recommend), beef rib (delicious), tri-tip (abit dry), roast pork (delicious), and one unidentified knob of rock-hard meat with a fat cap that was about ~70% of the piece Sides - potato pancake (delicious) + veggies (ok one of the few places where you can actually get veggies in a meat and potato heavy country, so load up guys)

Yelp
Just an update to ignore the incorrect review below from Tyler, who I heard giving the manager a hard time for no good reason. All of the meats are weighed since they aren't uniformly portioned and you order as much or as little as you want. The prepared meats are portioned, weighed and then put on the plate. The portioned sides are then added to the plate, which is not weighed again. The manager understandably just wanted to get rid of him. The moral of the story for that review? Don't post misinformation. Gotta love Yelpers. This was literally across the street from our hotel and really fit the bill for a great quick dinner on our arrival day, although that much meat can be kinda heavy for an early night. The carpaccio was the star; silky, well dressed and very well portioned. A smallish piece of hanger steak was very tasty but their view of medium rare was my view of rare. Brisket, a large potato pancake and roasted veggies were ok but weren't in the same league as the made to order dishes, although other prepared dishes may have been better choices. With a large and a small Pilsner, it was only 40?!? FAGEDDABOUTIT! PS all of the staff were friendly, contrary to some reviews.

Yelp
What a unique experience. We were unable to get reservations at the place we had selected. Kantyna was within a block of our hotel. If you are a carnivore then this is your place! You pick out from serving stations what you want to eat, they plate it for you and you enjoy. Or, you can select uncooked cuts of meat and they'll cook it for you. Unique place. I'd go back and I will go back for sure.

Yelp
This is the good stuff. Not fancy, but amazing food that is nicely presented and very delicious. Kantýna is a converted bank where you're ordering at the windows that used to be where the tellers would work and you're eating at a table that people used to use to fill out their deposit and withdrawal slips. We had two things here, a fantastic pork schnitzel and a pulled pork with pickled vegetables. Absolutely stunning. Full of flavor and texture it was one of my favorites on the food tour. They have wine and beer. I had a shot of something called "Devil's Schnapps" because of the bright red color. If you've ever had Cheerwine, it was that but with a kick. Tasty! [Review 12218 overall, 2002 of 2019.]
google avatar

Yelp
An experience! This is a Czech style beer hall. You walk in and can order food/ beer from the stands and then try to find a seat but I recommend waiting for a seat before ordering food as it's hard to stand with the platter and drink and eat at same time. We probably waited 15-20 minutes for a table and then ordered the tar tare, carpaccio and meatloaf. Would definitely order the carpaccio and tar tare again and recommend going here for the experience!

Yelp
After seeing Kantyna featured on the Honest Guide, I was determined to go during my week in Prague. I ventured over around 6pm on a Friday night, and got right in. The young woman working the host area handed me the menu card (in English), and said something about seating - I assumed she was telling me they were full and I'd need to stand at the long center counter, but I'm not sure - I had planned to stand there, so seating wasn't a concern for me. I headed straight to the ready-made food counter where a nice man (who also helped me out in English) took my order - carpaccio and a potato pancake. The potato pancake was handed to me right away, and he said the carpaccio would be about three minutes. I'm not sure it even took them that long - by the time I had my beer, the carpaccio was ready. Oh, yes, the beer. I kind of panicked and just pointed at a large beer glass, and the lovely woman behind the bar just said "big beer?" I laughed and said yes, "big beer." She asked if I'd like light or dark - I went with light, and she served me up a fantastic Czech beer - a little hoppier than I expected! But hey, this isn't Germany - the Czechs know what they're doing with tons of different kinds of beer. I ate standing at the counter, and all was delicious. I couldn't even finish what I ordered (but I did finish the beer). So, come hungry and eat up! The food is great and the staff were quick and helpful.

Fred C.

Yelp
The food is the reason you come. Finding a table is difficult lines can be long but it is worth it. Eat here I will again for sure

Yelp
I have nothing but great things to say about Kantyna. Our local friend took us here since his cousins were working. This restaurant used to be an old bank. So you have two options: picking a cut of meat as you walk in, or going buffet style. Our group opted to pick our own meat, ordering two filets ($20ea) and two shoulders. We grabbed our number (written on a bone) and headed to our table for drinks. For starters, we got bread and tartare. The tartare was amazing, the seasoning really ties this dish all together. Our meat finally arrived and the chili sauce & tartar sauce enhanced the flavor. The potato pancakes were a perfect side dish as well! For $30USD~ or so, you could get a meal here that would easily cost over $100USD in the US. I'm blown away, satisfied, and impressed with Kantyna overall!
google avatar

Natalie P.

Yelp
For 484 crown (about $21) I got a potato pancake, a scoop of pulled pork, 1 slice of beef, and steak tartar. And a small beer. The slice of roast beef was average at best as was the large potato pancake (reason for only 4 stars). The pulled pork was phenomenal .. so juicy and pulled apart so easy. The only turn off is that I know it was so good because I literally saw the fat congealing on the wax paper after I was done eating it.. but I suppose that's where the flavor is! The steak tartar was my favorite! Easily shareable (although I ate it all to myself) the flavor is fantastic and I believe the capers had a more pronounced role in the dish..which I love! The ordering process was confusing to me.. you enter where the raw meats are (you can pick a steak to be cooked for you or order tartar here) then proceed to the already prepared foods section (roast beef, pulled pork, veggies) then you grab a number and find a seat at a table.. the wait staff brings your drinks and any raw meats you ordered. Pay on your way out.

Yelp
I met a colleage for dinner on my first night in Prague, and he recommended Kantýna. As he was a local, I took his advice, and I'm glad I did. The place was packed, but we found a table in the back. We got handed cards to have our items marked, and we went to the counter to grab a beer and then food. I don't even know all of what I got. It was marked in Czech, but the staff spoke English so they explained everything to us. I picked way too much stuff and ended up having way too many leftovers. But I'm glad I tried everything. The carpaccio and the tartare were standouts to me, but there were 1 or 2 meats that I enjoyed as well. I wish I could remember which ones I liked and which ones I didn't, but it differed from my colleage, so to each their own. For a giant pile of food and a beer I paid just over 600 crown or $28. Not a cheap meal in this part of the world by any means, but a fun atmosphere and a nice variety of meats to try.

Yelp
They almost scammed me. I should have known better given scams involving selling food by weight is a classic to target tourists with. I should have pushed back earlier in the process. I ordered a plate of ready to go meat and a potato pancake. I was asked if I wanted mashed potato and foolishly answered yes. The pre-cooked meat is sold at 120 Koruna per 100 grams (roughly $5.46/100g). After saying yes to the mashed potato, I received two large scoops of mashed potato on the plate with the meat, despite asking them to stop after the first one and that is when I got suspicious. The mashed potato and potato pancake are priced separately. However, my plate with the meat was only weighed after the mashed potato was added. My receipt said they had served me 0.28kg of meat, which is much more than they really did. In truth, my estimate is probably just under 200 grams if the first piece of meat was 100 grams as I requested and was claimed. In truth, it was impossible for them to separate the weight of the potato (it was just scooped out, not measured by volume or anything) and the actual meat. The total bill came to 466 Koruna or roughly $21 usd without me having ordered any drinks. Why three stars? 1) The food was actually good. I liked my meat and the potato pancake. For causing me so much grief, the mashed potato was just ok. 2) I ended up receiving a full refund. It was not easy, having to escalate to the manager and then having to deal with a significant amount of pushback. In the end, I was stubborn and actually received a full refund from him which is more than I was trying to ask for. Moral of the story- whenever food is sold by weight, be careful! Edit: I would like to respond to Sid's response. "All of the meats are weighed since they aren't uniformly portioned and you order as much or as little as you want. The prepared meats are portioned, weighed and then put on the plate. The portioned sides are then added to the plate, which is not weighed again. The manager understandably just wanted to get rid of him, so the only one who got scammed was this great place by Tyler. The moral of the story for that review? Don't post your ignorance and misinformation." This is exactly as it should be and is explicitly not what occurred. The meat went directly from being portioned on the cutting board to going to the plate which was on the counter. Only once filled with both meat and potato did it get weighed on the scale. The manager was not there when the food was served so it was entirely the server's word against mine. I stand behind my account as accurate.

Yelp

Yelp
Kantyna was hands down my favorite meal here in Prague. With such amazing meat selections and flowing beers, you've got yourself a recipe for a great dinner out. This restaurant acts more like a cafeteria style eatery than it is a fine dining establishment. You grab a tray, order your meats and beer, and find a seat either in the long tables or stand at the massive counter in between where you order. You're given a receipt that the staff uses to write down your orders, and you take this to the cashier at the end of your meal to pay. Pretty simple enough! While I appreciated about this place wasn't overly touristy, it did pose a small challenge since everything was written in Czech. However, the butchers behind the counter knew a good amount of English to describe what meats we were selecting. I ordered the sirloin, roasted pork, and potatoes on the side (plus free bread provided). My favorite meat here was definitely the pork. It was oozing in juices and the crispy skin was roasted to perfection. I've had a lot of Cantonese Pork in my life and this definitely reigns high on top of one of my favorites. Total came out to 493kc. Everything is priced by the pound so the more meat you order, the more expensive your tab. Credit cards are accepted so feel free to swipe away if you're low on cash. I definitely recommend this spot as a must-try here in Prague!

Yelp
Authentic Czech food. Huge portions of meat. Potato pancake was great. Other sides looked nice also.

Yelp
I think this might have been my favorite meal on my recent trip to the Czech Republic. I've eaten at a lot places around Prague and this certainly is on the top of the list. It is in essence a Czech version of a steakhouse. We got a lot of yummy stuff. 1. The potato pancakes (bramboraky) were great. Nice and greasy as they are supposed to be. 2. We had some great little sausages with Czech bread and mustard. Those were great. 3. The non alcoholic beer on tap was great. Not too bitter. Great stuff to compliment the food. 4. The Czech hamburgers were simple and amazing. Good work kantyna!!

Yelp
We didn't get a chance to try this the last time we were in Prague. This time our hire was on the same street so we couldn't pass up the chance to try it. Only problem was that we weren't as hungry to do this place justice. If you like meat, this is the place to go. We only tried a few items, the roast pork, bone marrow, cucumber salad and carpaccio, and of course the beer. We had beer with lemon soda. Highly recommend if you enjoy sour beer. Everything was extremely good. The carpaccio was amazing. It was probably the best carpaccio I have ever had. Highly recommend to give this place a try. When you get to the restaurant you will get a card from the person at the front. This card is used to mark what items you order. Grab a seat and place your drink order with the person taking drink orders. Then go to the food area to get what food items you want. Any special orders such as bone marrow or meats to be cooked, you place that order and get a bone with a number and they will bring your food once it's cooked. Once you're done, you bring your card which has all the items you've eaten or drank to the cashier and pay. Again highly recommend to give it a try, but come hungry to enjoy the full experience of the different meats available.

Yelp
A really good meat bar. Everything we had was really good, from the beef neck to the steak tartare. All of the meat was succulent and flavorful. A must visit if your Prague.

Yelp
Review based on a veggie head**** I think this restaurant is perfect for meat eaters. I love the set up and the large standing table in the center. They have a bunch of small seated tables but I think to get the best experience, you should stand and mingle! After trying the beef tartar on my first night in Prague, I craved for it again - main reason why I came here. I was so disgusted by it here that I couldn't even finish it. There wasn't much seasoning and the bread was so thick and also not seasoned. It came with a fresh clove of garlic and you're suppose to rub it on the bread before putting the beef, which I did but eh. It was too meaty for me so it took the rest to go and fed it to the sea animals. I also tried some of the cooked meat and wasn't too excited for it. How does this restaurant work? Get a paper and they write on it each time you order. If you go to the stations for food, you are charged by weight - great for tasting everything. You can order a drink on the opposite side or get seated and order from a waiter. You can also order a steak but it's pricey here.

Yelp
This restaurant was highly recommended by a few of our tour guides so we decided to give it a try. The meat here is absolutely AMAZING...perfectly flavored and cooked! My friend and I shared the beef carpaccio and the ribeye steak with the coffee sauce...both were DELICIOUS!! I had a side of cooked vegetables (plus free bread is provided). The food was amazing but the ordering process and restaurant style can be a little confusing for first timers. First, you are given tickets at the front and have to find a place to sit. There's a few tables in the front by the butcher area, a standing area with a king table near the cafeteria style ordering area, and sit down tables in the back. It was very crowded and can be a bit hard to find a table with chairs. To food you have 2 choices. You can order cafeteria style from the counter where they have a select of food or you can go to the butcher (more options) and order everything from there which will be cooked as you like and delivered to your table. We chose to order everything from the butcher. All the meat is priced per pound. I would definitely dine here again! Actually...it was soooo good we came here again on New Year's Day when they first opened so it was less crowded! Great for pictures!

Yelp
Huge disappointment I was so looking forward to dinner here.. says open to 11 and we arrive at 1015 and they said we have six minutes to order. Nastiest people I have encountered in Prague. Nobody was the least bit nice and most wee short and unpleasant to deal with. The food was very mediocre and terribly overpriced. I can't say that anything was great. Burger hi hum. Potato pancake soggy. Ketchup weird. Mustard sucked. I know. Just skip it. So many other good meals available in Prague

Yelp
Us younger Westerners might not know that Kantyna seems to be based on a Communist era canteen or cafeteria style restaurant that Praguers used to dine out for lunch or dinner (although a few of these still exist), Kantyna throws a modern twist. Yes, you do wait in line with a tray and draft beer is available, but mostly everything is available by weight. The seating layout is interesting since it is in an old bank building, so there is one side with the food and the other where Jana is pouring tank beer. In between is a large community table and just behind that are a number of tables. When we went the back room was pretty full, but a Czech business woman, who worked at the city hall was happy to let us sit with her. I ordered some roast beef, veggies, and bramborak the size of my head. Yes, and since this is a newer spin on the old canteen, the prices were about triple, but still very reasonable for the exchange rate. A number of tourists came inside to take pictures but did not eat there. It was their loss. By the way, they speak english (the lengua franca of Europe), so after a minute of hearing my Czech, they reply in English and are very polite about it. It is an open kitchen and you can see that everyone is enjoying what they are doing which is why the food it so good. I wish there was a place like this near where I lived. I could go there everyday.

Yelp
This is an incredible meat restaurant - this place serves up some of the freshet and most flavorful meat you will ever eat for an insanely cheap price. They also have a HUGE selection of beer, wine, and lemonades. I ordered the steak tartare, beef carpaccio (the BEST), bone marrow (unbelievably good - a full inch thicker than anywhere you'll get in the US), a side of brisket, pork belly, and a beer and it came to $30 USD. This would easily be $100 in the US. Beautiful ambiance, but do note it doesn't operate like a sit-down restaurant: it's serverless and you order using a ticket system and find a seat. This I would say is the only con - come early so you can snag a seat and eat in peace!

Yelp
Words cannot describe how amazing the food is here! The process is a bit confusing but once you try the food it's worth coming back over and over again. You enter the establishment and get to pick from a large array of fine meats, pre weighed, sliced, and you just say how you want it cooked. The tricky part is trying to find somewhere to stand or sit while you eat. There is a cool large marble standing table where we ate with about 20 other people and the atmosphere was great! I got the filet medium rare and a potato pancake. My friends and I shared the beef tartare and WOW! Will certainly be back next time I'm in town!

Yelp
Wow Wow Wow Old bank building turned into a Czech meat shop? Okay, I can get with that. I was so impressed with the lighting that I had to look around before ordering. The beer is good, the food even better. We ate at the community table in the center and had a great time. While having dinner another day at a different place we overhead a couple mention they were thinking of coming here when both my boyfriend and I had to tell them they HAVE to go. You should too

Yelp
We went here as a stop during our Taste of Prague tour - which was excellent btw. Had a sample of all of their best dishes and had to come back for our last meal. The tartare was excellent and so was their carpaccio. The schnitzel was so tender and their bbq was excellent. Am now in a meat coma... There was a very kind man at the counter who was especially friendly and kind. Definitely a meal to remember.

Yelp
Every bite tasted fresh and had such a wonderful flavor. It's the way all food should be. There were two of us and we both felt the same way. It was about 650 kc for two and we eat on the light side. We had one beer, two helpings of vegetables, one soup, two cooked sausages sold by weight, and two slices of cooked lamb (one helping). See my tip on how the ordering works under yelp tips. In short, order at the food counters using a order ticket which is used by the staff to check off the items you order.

Yelp
Such a good place!! They get meat from the best butchers in Czech Republic. The place has self service, you're free to choose any kind of met you want (and as much as you want!!!) Design of the place is absolutely fabulous.

Yelp
Steak was good but over priced. At the same price I get a steak in New York with service at an exclusive table and not a self-service cafeteria. I suggest to do what the majority of people do... Order the basic at the buffet section and enjoy the experience

Yelp
Food is great, but don't expects customer service, in fact some of the workers are rude. We had the carpaccio and the meat/potatoes. Really good ! The self serve concept is cool until you can find a chair to sit in. I would come back for the carpaccio but not for atmosphere and definitely not the customer service.

Yelp
A gourmet trip to the old days...since it is a restaurant belonging to the Ambiente group, the top quality of food and service is granted. I have had one of the best steaks in here and overall the meals are authentic and made from the best ingredients. Even though the idea and the concept are really cool, I personally don't like the interior that much - especially the wooden chairs that seem a bit scary to me :))... but if you want to experience the ambience of a school or factory mass eatery, this is the place to go ;)

Yelp
Yelp isn't used much here. This place was recommended by a local blogger. It was vibrant and engaging. We had filets, side dishes, wine and beer and the tab was very reasonable - food was delicious.

Yelp
Not a meat eater but potato pancakes and pickled vegetables were yummy. Dark beer was very good.
