Glendale’s New Farmers Market Showcases Armenia’s Rich Food Culture | Eater LA

"A few stalls over I found artisan bread baker Ani Harutiunian of Baketo, who is trying to change the bread culture in Los Angeles after learning techniques in France and Switzerland and opening a chain bakery in Armenia; her bakery specializes in sourdough breads from rye to German pumpernickel, the latter of which requires 24 hours of baking time in a low-temperature oven." - Ani Duzdabanyan

K'ARSI LAVASH

Google
Absolutely love this bakery! Everything is incredibly fresh — you can literally taste the difference. I had the Gata bread and it was hands down the best I’ve ever had in my life. They also offered us free lavash. The staff are super friendly and welcoming, and the prices are very fair for the quality you get. Highly recommend stopping by if you’re in the area!

It was our first visit to this establishment. We traveled over 400 miles to Glendale, CA, and chose to sample their bakery items and traditional Armenian lavash. I was most impressed with both the food and the service; all the employees were wonderful and greeted customers with warm smiles. I wholeheartedly recommend this place to anyone who has the chance to visit; you will not be disappointed.

As I took a bite and noticed something hard, I immediately stopped to look — and to my absolute horror, I saw a nail inside the pastry. I felt sick to my stomach, it was completely unacceptable. I couldn’t believe it. It’s hard to describe the level of disgust and fear I felt in that moment, knowing how easily I or someone else could have been seriously gotten sick. Also the fear of a child eating that same pastry and possibly getting food poisoned makes me beyond angry. The kitchen is the one place where all staff should be extra careful on following all health guidelines unfortunately they failed greatly on this.

Google
This was my first time visiting the store. I had often seen long lines for lavash while passing by, so I decided to give it a try since it's a traditional bread for me. As I stood in line, I was reminded of my childhood, waiting eagerly for my order and savoring the delightful aroma of fresh lavash. The bakery was spotless, and the staff were incredibly respectful and friendly. I also tried an eclair, which was absolutely delicious! Kudos to the management team for creating such a fantastic team and maintaining high quality. I hope they keep it up!

Silviya K.

Google
Absolutely love this place! It is definitely worth the wait as there is usually a line for the fresh lavash. The raisin sweet bread (bulki) is my favorite: full of raisins and oh-so-soft. Their cream puffs and nazook (gata) are both amazing. And their pickles are tasty too. Expert tip: you can order lavash ahead of time and not stand in the long line if you don’t have to have lavash that just came out of the oven. Lavash is still extremely fresh.

Google
Every time I visit K’arsi Bakery, it’s such a joy! The bread is always incredibly fresh and delicious, and the staff is absolutely amazing so friendly and kind every time I walk in. I truly appreciate the warm welcome I receive, especially on these hot days when everyone is working so hard. You all deserve so much love and respect for your dedication and beautiful energy. Thank you for your outstanding customer service and for making each visit feel special. Stay strong we see your hard work and we love you for it! Wishing each of you all the best always 💛🍞🌟

Google
This business is well known and popular. They make quality Armenian food. It is nice also to see the Lavash going through the oven until it is ready. Only problem is the wait time and the line outside who can be pretty long. Wish they had more people greeting and taking orders.

Marina K.

Google
One of my favorite bakeries in Glendale. The lavash, the round gatas are my favorite but the customer service always disappoints, unfortunately. I always go there and I am ok to stand and wait in line for my order. I do remember once I got confirmed that there is no line for other pastries and baked goods except for lavash. Fine, I was there and waiting for my up for my order when an older man came in and gave his order. There was a big line but he came as I thought oh probably he was not getting lavash which was fine and let him take his order. He ordered gata, bread and he asked if he could get lavash too and of course, he got the green light and overall it took him less than 2minutes to get what he wanted and at the meantime we were all waiting for our ups. Regardless the age, the gender, the disability, etc if there are some rules those should be for everyone. I felt very uncomfortable waiting when someone can come in and “cut the line”without any reason. I wish the employees working there won’t be selective to whom make exceptions other than that this bakery wins in the town for its fresh and quality products.

Yelp
The best lavash-bread in town, I love this store, the staff is very friendly and they work fast. The only thing is, everyone knows it's the best place for lavash, and there's always a huge line for it, but you can skip the line for the pastries. And by the way, their eclairs and birdmilk are my favorites, definitely try them.
google avatar

Lina M.

Yelp
We love the fresh baked lavash here. Always a line but worth waiting. We also tried their eclairs and omg huge and full of cream. Please support them. The staff are also very nice and friendly.
google avatar

Nicole B.

Yelp
The lines are long but they have the freshest lavash I've ever had in LA. They literally give it to you out of the oven, that's why there's a wait. We wanted to try their gata as well, but it was going to be another 30 minute wait so we'll just have to try it next time :)

Yelp
There is ALWAYS a LINE coming out of this tiny Armenian bakery that specializes in the Armenian flat bread called: Lavash. Besides LAVISH, K'arsi also offers sweet and savory Armenian style breads: Gatas, Peroshiki, Lahmajoons, Nazook, Napoleon, Birds Milk Cake, Layered Honey Cake, are what comes to mind. I also saw FRESH sourced Brown Eggs available for sale! Very cool. Oh, and their LAVASH flat bread is STELLAR! The BEST lavash I ever tasted! There is a line out the door for a reason. No worries though, the line goes by quickly. Bakery is tiny and super clean! Cash and Credit are accepted. Service was so welcoming to this only Asian chick in line, lol! Thank you! Can't wait to return for more lavish and goodies!

Yelp
Fresh everything every day this place is always busy. I used to drive by this place and get upset because the roads were always blocked off because people are always stopping at this place. I finally stopped by and I see what the fuss is all about fresh bread fresh treats it's so hot in there because the bakery is running literally like 24 hours. Stop by if you want to try some Armenian treats. The workers inside are so nice!!
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
Great place to get fresh lavash or popular Armenian pastries! I found parking on a nearby side street, and I got inside right before a line started forming out the door. The staff behind the counters were very nice and explained what each pastry was. Their napoleon slice was so good. The pastry layers were thin and crispy and the cream was light and fluffy. They also threw in a single lavash for free because I had never tried it before! The lavash was slightly salted and I kept snacking on it by itself before using the rest as a wrap.

Gohar K.

Yelp
Freshest and the most delicious lavash in LA ... it's worth the drive from the valley to get this deliciousness. They also sell pastries, gata etc. Customer service is wonderful. Very friendly people working here. Love it. During the weekends there might be a line out the door. Beware. The only issue is the parking. Hard to find. So let someone else drive you to buy lavash ... lol
google avatar

Elizabeth E.

Yelp
Best Lavash ever nothing beats this place 10/10. It's worth the wait in line! Armenian food it the best
google avatar

Emilia L.

Yelp
The lavash is good. They have other types of bread and pastries too. I would go back here again.

Ruzanna O.

Yelp
Hello wanted to say that I do love the Lavash from this bakery, but wanted to let owner to know that employees whoever answers phone calls has no skills in good customer service, I've been calling since yesterday to try to ask few questions regarding if I can place an order, that lady was very unprofessional and the way she spoke to me on the phone was rude and not welcoming. I'm very disappointed in the service I'm getting from your employees. Honestly bread and pastries are very tasty but if the service is at a bad level customers will stop coming to you. For your good and your customers work with your employees to improve the service. Thank you

Yelp
Im no longer going to to gatekeep lol this is Karsi Bakery, an Armenian family owned business. it's my new favorite spot! The second you walk in, you're hit with the smell of fresh-baked lavash, and let me tell you, it's life-changing. It's a cozy bakery with lovely employees. I couldn't wait another second. Right when I got home I made myself a cheese sandwich with the fresh lavash. truly unmatched. Their lahmajoon is amazing too. Super thin and crispy with massive flavor. My weakness is a delicious gate and nazook. I don't know what kind of magic they're using, but theirs is the best I've ever had. especially Their nazzok.. it's crispy and flaky on the outside and the filling is so soft and chewy. I'll be bold and say it's truly my favorite pastry. they also carry other Armenian owned products. Don't wait another second. Go to Karsi and try the magic of fresh tradition yourself.

Yelp
Would you do the following for a very good lavash? Stand in line for a minimum of 30 minutes? (Unless you go after 11PM) Stand in line on the sidewalk? When you get the lavash third of it burned Separate with you bought because they are stuck together
google avatar

Nora A.

Yelp
Our favorite place, where they have the most delicious baked goods and lavash straight from the oven.

Mar A.

Yelp
the WAIT is ridiculous. the employees have no idea how to run this place! it is tooo slow for no reason whatsoever. i decided to try this place, there were only 2 people outside the place, after 20 solid minutes, the same 2 people outside were still there. we did not move even an inch. the reason there is always a line is because this place doesnt know how to process customers, its not because its seemingly good (as one would assume since there is always a line when driving by). do not be fooled by the line! its literally the same people waiting for a basic bread. unless you have upwards of 1 hour to wait outside for them to hopefully help 1 customer.

Yelp
When I saw lines of people exiting this tiny bakery with sheets of ultra thin, super fresh lavash draped over their arms like dry cleaning, I knew I had to try. Perhaps the best bakery in Glendale. It's tiny, but everything is insanely fresh. They're constantly cranking out layers of hot, fresh lavash as well as an array of excellent cookies, pastries and pies. I bought a selection to try and instantly devoured it all. Didn't even last long enough to take a photo.

Yelp
There's lavash and then there's K'arsi Lavash. After trying this lavash, I haven't been able to enjoy any other lavash. There's a line out the door for the freshly made lavashes and the wait is well worth it. Staff and owner are friendly and always greet you kindly and show appreciation for the client's support.

Yelp
I just don't know what the hype is about their lavash. I went stood in line for 30 mins last Thursday. Here is my intake. 1. Lavash not great the dough gets dry too quick. 2. Round large gata needs to be more moist again outside dough is thick and the inside butter and sugar isn't enough it was a waste of money. 3. Potatoe perashki. Needs more potatoe filling inside and cmon atleast add some spices like Aleppo pepper, salt and add some onions & parsley 4. The only good item which I will go for is the napoleon It was honestly good, dough was crunchy wasn't mushy and old Bread I prefer other brands which I will not mention the names.

Yelp
Newish Armenian bakery by Smart and Final. Freshest lavash you can get anywhere, literally has to cook so they can bag it for you. At times long lines but moves fast.

Yelp
Memories of Lavash shops in Teheran and Isfahan came flooding back to me!!! K'arsi Lavash is unparalleled in Los Angeles! NO ONE makes Lavash like K'arsi! Just entering the store is a pleasant encounter starting with great smells, then excellent service with crazy affordable prices! Buy an extra always as you will eat it driving home!!!!
google avatar

Negin I.

Yelp
My friend recommended this place for their lavash bread, and it did not disappoint! Fresh, soft, and perfectly baked--great quality. The place was super busy, so there was a bit of a wait, but it was worth it. If you're looking for good lavash, this is the spot

Yelp
OH! What a Heavenly Feeling of Freshness/Freshly Flaky Baked GATA Ever!!! when I got the chance to taste it from Day 1. Wow!!! Yeah, I haven't been to their physical location yet, BUT, surely will be there tomorrow, first thing in the morning of Monday. BETCHA! and By the way, this is ANGIE

Yelp
The best lavash in Glendale, always hot and fresh. Always wonderful service, especially the owner himself is very nice.

Yelp
If you're looking for fresh bread in Glendale, there are definitely dozens of bakeries to choose from. But there are a few reasons I would only come to K'arsi, Glendale's hidden gem of a bakery. This place is seriously a little hole in the wall and typically has a long line out it's doors. You will find goods here that resemble exactly what you would find in Yerevan. Definitely try their fresh lavash as well as their gata made with incredible puff pastry.
google avatar

Arthur G.

Yelp
I will never come back to this bakery anymore. I found hair in the lavash and it was not even cooked well There are so many bakeries I can go and buy lavash not from here anymore. And the pastries are old soggy.
google avatar

Margarita G.

Yelp
Best lavash in US. I stood in line for 2.5 hours or Xmas eve. And it was worth it. Super stretchy and yummy.
google avatar

Me T.

Yelp
If you're coming for lavash, you will not be disappointed! It's delicious, soft, and chewy and I'm not too much of a bread person, per se. This is the reason I would recommend Karsi. The rest of the offerings are similar to any Armenian market in the area. I tried the lahmajoon and perashky and they were just ok. I knocked off a star for the line and parking. I feel there's a more efficient way to manage the wait times and line. I literally stood in line for 30 minutes just to buy bread. Also, I feel that the business needs to be responsible to their community and structure wherever people park a little more responsibly.
google avatar

Sam G.

Yelp
Best lavash in LA. Hot out of the oven so when you bring it home make sure don't leave it in the plastic bag, air it few minutes.
google avatar

Frank A.

Yelp
Amazing and pleasant greeting by Varduhi. The most authentic Armenian delicacies outside of Armenia or an Armenian Grandmother's kitchen!
google avatar

Shikha B.

Yelp
I was hoping to grab some lunch on my way back to DTLA and someone had heard K'arsi was really good. I got there and noticed a line out the door and clearly no place to sit. But I was committed so I stood in line for 20 mins (on a Monday afternoon) and awkwardly (like a tourist in a foreign country) ordered some lavash and pastries. The lavash is apparently $1.65 / piece. And the pastries were reasonably priced. I was disappointed that I had to drive home to actually eat (no seating in that tiny bakery) but my car smelled like fresh bread the entire drive home. Feels good to be able to enjoy these ancient culinary traditions in LA.

Greg G.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place, but the hygiene practices are concerning. Staff handle cash and then touch bread/food with the same gloves without washing hands or changing gloves. That's a basic food safety rule and it's disappointing to see it ignored. I hope management addresses this soon because the bread and pastry look good.
google avatar

Jay A.

Yelp
This place was popping everytime I pass by! But turned into a nightmare. Me and my daughter went to check it out and brought my service dog. We immediately got turned away and harassed by the cashier and staff! I even showed them my dogs papers even tho they still disregarded it. I wish they were all trained to handle situations like this as really it's a bad look on your store. Fortunate enough the owners themselves contacted me and try to solve the issue but man the damage was done. Fair play but this is just a warning for those who has service animal.
google avatar

Alexia P.

Yelp
This place is delicious fairly priced freshly made and they are super friendly. Highly recommend.

Alicia B.

Yelp
I do not get how this place has such rave reviews. Lavash was mediocre and got some bakes sweets for the price they are charging they should produce quality bakes goods. Anyhow nothing special about this place and I would not go back.
google avatar

Anna M.

Yelp
Very delicious pastries and amazing lavash. Great costumer service. Overall a great and clean place. We love it a lot.
google avatar

Jannie K.

Yelp
my son just love that big round gata, we love the fresh backed lavash, when they give you right from the oven its smth soo tasty! and all their cakes especially ekler and mikado, soo yummy!! you have to try!! Personal is very nice !! they are quick and very attentive! And prices are reasonable then in other places + good quality! You have to try lavash!! I promise you will love it!!

Liana E.

Yelp
I've been searching for lavash in the U.S. that actually tastes like the real Armenian kind--and finally found it at Karsi Lavash. It's hands down the best I've had here. I'm not even usually a gata fan, but theirs is amazing--light, flavorful, and reminds me of Geghaedi gata. So happy to have found a place that truly brings back the taste of home!

Roya P.

Yelp
I would give them 10 stars if I could. Freshest and the best lavash ever. This is how a good lavash has to taste and look like.
google avatar

Rita G.

Yelp
They have the best lavash, and their the baked goods are as good. This place is successful not only because they provide excellent products, but because the owners are not bosses but are leaders.

Colin S.

Yelp
Cheese boreg was best pastry I've ever had in my whole life. Long line get there early!

Alec M.

Yelp
The best lavash bread by far in LA. Warning: you will never be able to enjoy any other lavash once you have Karsi lavash. They also have other favorite baked items like Gata. Employees are nice even when you are buying a couple of small items and there are long lines.

Dom R.

Yelp
The best Lavash I have been able to find in America! After living in Armenia and having fresh lavash daily I have looked and tried many places and it just wasn't the same. Until I tried K'arsi Lavash! The service was outstanding and the owner and workers were very welcoming and made you feel right at home. The lavash itself was so fresh and made to order. I wish I lived closer to where I could get it everyday but 10 pieces of lavash will have to do for now until next time! 10/10! Can't wait to go back!

Linda W.

Yelp
Their pastries are so good. Super flakey, not oily at all. And really good lavash. Hidden gem with great prices

Vlada B.

Yelp
Amazing! Great quality products, We got lavash and Gata. very reasonable price, great flavor, rear to find!

Liliyan K.

Yelp
very unhealthy and bad qualities, soaked in oil pastries . Their business is all about oil and sugar.
