Oh... My... Goodness... This place here is a winner! We wanted Jamaican/Caribbean food, with vegan options. Karuba's did not disappoint! We ordered brown stew chicken, jerk chicken wings, ackee and saltfish, veggies and rice and peas. EVERYTHING was on point. The rice and peas were just dry enough, but not too dry. The veggies (cabbage, carrots and peppers) were seasoned just enough. The ackee and saltfish, for my first time? Amazing! I will definitely be ordering this again and I want to try ackee with just veggies, too. The jerk wings were just right, sauced perfectly. When you order the brown stew chicken a la carte, it is a bowl full of chicken and the stew sauce, not just sauce. A great amount to smother rice with and still have sauce to sop up with the chicken. I also ordered the vegan spinach patty. I was skeptical on the flavor, because it was just spinach, but I wanted to try something new! Surprisingly, the patty was great! The spinach was seasoned and cooked well. It was not too stringy.
The beautiful young queen at the register was very polite, but seemed shy. She was attentive to everything and made sure we were taken care of.
The prices are pretty affordable, average of $10-20. The brown stew chicken was only $6, I believe. The patty was $3, ackee and saltfish $17.
Overall, give this place some love! Yes, it is in the 'hood, but mind your business, don't be Karen or Ken, and you'll enjoy some of the best food in L.A.!
