Chinatown’s Fusiony New Supper Club Hits All the Senses | Eater DC

"Opening Friday, March 14 at 600 F Street NW, this historic Chinatown corner structure — built in 1906 for the Oriental Building Association (an Asian community center still advertised on its limestone facade) — has been reinvented by a partnership between hospitality powerhouses Mike and John Burns (Burns Brothers), vet restaurateur Tim Ma (Lucky Danger, Any Day Now), and commercial real estate broker LaMean Koroma. "There are so many Michelin-starred places here, but what is missing from a nightlife standpoint? The need for more of a dinner-party vibe," says John Burns, and guests entering will find a reinvented ground floor of bright, LED-lit lines, mesmerizing mirrored accents, textured walls, rows of crimson-colored booths laid out like a catwalk, and blacked-out velvet curtains that seem to blur the concept of space and time — plus sensory touches such as lavender water poured over your hands before dining; as Burns promises, "No matter where you’re sitting, you’re gonna get a one-of-a-kind experience. Everything will hit on all the emotions, from smell to touch." From a glass-enclosed exhibition kitchen in the back, chef Brian Dunbar (whose resume includes Ram’s Head Tavern in Savage, Maryland) executes an artistically plated dinner menu of tapas for two, sushi and sashimi, ramen, dumplings, soups, and salads: "I like to incorporate a lot of different backgrounds into my food," says Dunbar, and "This is definitely our special take on Asian fusion," exemplified by a creamy risotto infused with Thai basil pesto and topped with grilled prawns and a shower of toasted sesame seeds. The theatrical program extends to entertainment and service: house DJs until 2 a.m. on weekends, high-end Yamaha, JBL, and Rockville speakers for powerful, crystal-clear audio, fire dancers performing atop the bar, flambeed filet, showy sushi torched tableside off rolling carts, and a smoky Old Fashioned starring Suntory Japanese whisky. Opening cocktails include a timely "Cherry Blossom" made with ruby-red Empress Rose Elderflower Gin, cherry puree, and rosé Champagne, while a savory "Last Dragon" showcases a shrimp skewer swimming in Belvedere vodka. The name nods to the building’s original terracotta surroundings and "translates to a special form of movement in martial arts," a word Mike Burns notes "is one of the few words that shares the same meaning in Chinese and Japanese": "We wanted to stay true to the genesis of what this building really represents, of bringing people together," he says. With a dress code described as "elevated casual" (explicitly not aimed at jersey-wearing arena crowds) and a VIP private back entrance along Sixth Street NW, the venue debuts with an upstairs lounge to wait and additional concepts: "Nohmad at Sunset" — a "wanderlust, nomadic experience" filled with greenery and its own bar manned by staff in flight-attendant–themed outfits — and daytime "Nohmad at Sunrise" serving coffees and teas from around the world on roving carts; a flashy penthouse level opens only on Saturday nights where waiters will sport tuxedos and white gloves to pour exclusively top-shelf spirits. "In trying times like these, especially with what’s going on in the government, people need to have an escape from their daily reality," says John Burns, adding that "What are the great unifiers? Music and food." The dramatic overhaul was led by Drummond Projects’ Jimmie Drummond, transforming the former Fuel Pizza location into a trippy, luxe space (he also designed the striking-blue Elmina), and the project sits directly across from Capital One Arena amid an $800 million modernization; the upper-level extensions share space with the Burns Brothers’ two-year-old membership club HQ House, which is simultaneously expanding to Tatu City, Kenya." - Tierney Plumb

KATA is definitely a beautiful place with vibrant energy. Locating the front entrance was a little tricky, but it’s literally at the corner between the fire station and capital one arena. My friend and I sat in the dimly-lit, well designed dining area adjacent to the bar (which is also bold, beautiful and really catches the eye soon as you walk in). Our server had captivating energy, gave great recommendations and she was so attentive. Unfortunately I was disappointed when I found out the fire dancers no longer perform on Saturday’s (although an instagram post I saw a few weeks before advertised this experience). Also, the food was not what I expected. Although very fresh, the plates were small bites and lacked in flavor; especially the miso garlic Sea Bass. Maybe my portion was missing the miso and the garlic. The cocktails and dessert definitely made up for the experience! I’d recommend tying the mango sticky rice. They make great martinis and their classic crafted cocktails. If I do return, it’ll be on a Friday night for the fire show or during happy hour when I don’t plan on eating.

We had the best server named Eric! He was attentive, kind, and welcoming. We found the salmon in Kata role to be a little fishy but still delicious. Sea bass was my favorite. The music, decor and vibe here is 1000/10. Will definitely be back here :)

Love this place! As soon as you walk in it feels like you are leaving DC and being transported to South Beach! Great vibes, music, staff, and food. Absolutely love the rainbow sushi roll and the sea bass melts in your mouth! On Fridays they bring out a fire breather and have a full on show with sparklers and smoke. This is a great place for a date night or if you are looking for something different. I’ve been to a lot of great restaurants in DC, but they are stuffy - KATA is the opposite. I also don’t drink alcohol and love that they have a robust mocktail menu. Highly recommended!

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. I stopped by while in the area and sat at the bar. There, I was eloquently greeted by both bartenders Jasmine and Eric. The two of them were such a fun time to engage with. The place has an upscale ambience and flair that feels fresh and new. I love the design, especially at the bar. I love that they had a mocktail menu as I decided not to drink but the flavors certainly tasted like an actual cocktail. Eric recommended I try the Pomegranate Kimono. It was delightful and frothy. Jasmine recommended I try the Szechuan Peppercorn Filet which came on a unique dish shaped liked a plate and with a small bowl holding the dish in the center. The conversation amongst the other guests and the bartenders was fun and lively. It’s a mature atmosphere with charm. I highly recommend visiting. Portion sizes for the dishes are satisfying for the price point. I definitely will be coming back soon as I frequent this area often.

The experience here is like going to Miami. We went on a Saturday and the The fire dancer and LIVE DJ were incredible. Our server Tiana was so sweet and knowledgeable about the menu. We loved the sushi, steak and dumpling and I’m obsessed with the banana cheesecake 🔥🔥🔥

Kata Restaurant Review – A Memorable Experience with Jasmine’s Exceptional Service Dining at Kata was an experience that far exceeded expectations from the moment I walked through the door. The warm, inviting ambiance set the tone, but it was Jasmine’s outstanding service that truly elevated the evening. She greeted us with a genuine smile and a gracious demeanor, immediately making us feel like valued guests rather than just another table. Her attention to detail was impeccable—checking in at just the right moments, ensuring our glasses were never empty, and anticipating our needs before we even had to ask. Jasmine’s knowledge of the menu was impressive. She offered thoughtful suggestions based on our tastes, describing each dish with enthusiasm and accuracy. It was clear she takes pride in representing Kata’s culinary vision. Her timing was flawless—courses arrived promptly, yet never felt rushed, allowing us to enjoy a perfectly paced dining experience. The food itself was a celebration of flavor, presentation, and quality. Every plate that arrived at our table was visually stunning and crafted with care. The ingredients were fresh, the seasoning balanced, and the textures delightful. From appetizers bursting with vibrant flavor to mains that were hearty yet refined, every bite confirmed that the kitchen team takes great pride in their craft. The desserts were equally impressive—sweet without being overwhelming, and beautifully plated. Beyond the food and service, the overall atmosphere at Kata was refined yet comfortable. Soft lighting, tasteful décor, and a welcoming energy made it easy to relax and savor the evening. It’s the kind of place where you feel equally comfortable celebrating a special occasion or enjoying an intimate dinner. In summary, Kata delivered a flawless combination of excellent service and exceptional cuisine. Jasmine was the heart of that experience—her professionalism, warmth, and genuine care turned a great meal into a truly memorable night. I left not only satisfied but eager to return, confident that both the food and service will continue to impress. Kata has earned my highest recommendation, and I look forward to my next visit.

Yelp
It was a beautiful night at Kata--everything about this spot is 5 Star. From the warm hospitality to the stunning design, thoughtful service, gorgeous plates, and craft cocktails that hit just right--this place delivers. The Burns Brothers are off to a strong and soulful start with this project. Located right on the corner of 6th & F St NW, Kata brings a much-needed glow to downtown D.C. Hope y'all get a chance to stop by, sip something great, and support good people doing great things. xo, ‍Chef Lara™

Yelp
Kata is everything you want and expect from a new restaurant in a trendy part of DC. The Asian fusion restaurant offers bold flavors, gorgeous décor/design, and a vibe that makes you feel like you've been taken to a unique getaway. My friends and I went on a Friday evening and the energy was grown and sexy. The space is modern and moody, with sleek lighting, a trendy playlist/ music, and just the right buzz from the crowd. The live fire dancer performance right in the middle of dinner was great! It added a dramatic, almost cinematic twist to the night that totally elevated the experience. Everyone had their phones out--and for good reason. It felt like dinner and a show in one. As for the food, overall it was fresh, beautifully plated, and full of flavor. I especially loved the tempura vegetable sushi and the teriyaki glazed duck breast. The cocktails were equally tasty, and included well-balanced and creative drinks. The service was friendly and efficient, even with the packed house. Our server kept things flowing without making us feel rushed, which I appreciated. If you're looking for a place to celebrate something special or have a night out with your good friends, Kata delivers the full package - ambiance, performance, and food with presentation that's worth posting.

Yelp
We stopped by KATA for late-night drinks and overall had a good experience. The atmosphere is intimate--definitely a small space--but the vibes were great. The music was a highlight of the night: well-curated and added a lot to the overall ambiance. That said, the bar service left something to be desired. The bartenders weren't very attentive and seemed a bit unsure about even simple drink orders. We tried "The Johnny Boy" and "Mount Yuzu" from the cocktail menu--both sounded interesting but unfortunately didn't deliver on flavor. The ingredients didn't quite blend well, and it was hard to tell whether that was due to the recipes themselves or how the drinks were prepared. The Asian-inspired theme is intriguing, but the cocktail program could use some refinement to better match the concept. Despite that, I'm still curious to try their food and plan to come back for a full dining experience--hoping it's more aligned with the good energy of the space.

Yelp
Loved the vibe. It's a cute date or drinking spot. Quite small so I would make a reservation to be safe. Since it seems fairly new, the crowd was light when I went but I presume it will pick up. It's a lounge atmosphere with dim lights and dark backdrop so a cute date option. Music is house / pop. It's like dinner in a speakeasy! The sushi was delicious but they stop serving entrees after 10! Drinks were also delicious and there was a belly dancer on the Saturday I went! That was fun! Service was good except the lady at the door seemed stressed out when I asked for seating without a reservation. She said they were booked up and couldn't guarantee me a table in 30 mins as I was waiting for someone even though there was ample seating available. As soon as my party walked in around 10, and they asked, we got seated. It was weird. Stressed or not, as the 'face/greeter' of the restaurant, she should be more inviting / courteous to patrons. The manager (he seemed like it) was very friendly and thoughtful on the floor and made up for what she lacked.

Yelp
Kata is very cute. Perfect for date night. They even have a private room for small parties. The service was ok. The sushi limited and it is pricy. I did enjoy the spicy tuna roll and my friend enjoyed the roll the mango tango she ordered. While the sushi was good the price point is inflated for such basic rolls. I can't say that I would go back but it was definitely worth experiencing.

Yelp
Mmm, KATA is just a whole vibe!! Heard about KATA being new to the city, so made reservations for HH after work. Walking on the street, it is hard to find; however, after talking with the sweet bartender, I found out KATA is a speakeasy - so, got it! Upon entering the moody aesthetic, it makes you feel like you're in another country. Good music was playing as well. Their new HH menu is BOMB - a dumpling plus a sushi roll for $15?! Uh yeah! Cocktails, too, under the HH menu are $10. I enjoyed their beef dumpling (soft and sweet outer layer with seasoned beef filling) and their firecracker roll. For drinks, I enjoyed their Lemon Drop and Espresso Martini (both were okay). Oh, and for dessert, I throughly enjoyed their Banana Cheesecake Cookie Mousse Pie - mmm sooooo good! I tried my co-workers Sticky Mango Rice and boy was that good, too! Can't wait to return to enjoy other menu items! The bartenders were super sweet, friendly, and were knowledgeable about items on the menu, and I loved sitting at the bar watching them make drinks! The hospitality was superb!

Yelp
I'll start by saying that when I joined a couple of girlfriends here on a Thursday night, I didn't realize the restaurant had only been open for a few weeks. With that in mind, I want to give them grace as there were definitely a few kinks still being worked out, but that's to be expected for a new establishment. The owner came around to each table and was genuinely open to feedback, which we really appreciated. If we were rating purely on ambiance and drinks, I'd say this place is closer to 4 stars. The interior is super cute, stylish, and ideal for a girls' night out or pre-event cocktails. It's a bit on the smaller side, so seating felt a little tight. For reference, we came on a night there was a Caps game at Capital One Arena next door. Definitely something to keep in mind as parking was limited and expensive due to the event, so rideshare is probably your best bet. As for the seating, our party of three was initially placed at a small round table, but we asked to move to a nearby rectangular one, which worked out much better. The plates are regular size even though the menu focuses on small bites and tapas, so a little more table space made a big difference. Food-wise, the single large dumplings (beef, pork, and chicken) were tasty and sharable. Of the three sushi rolls we tried, the Mango Tango and Tempura Vegetable were solid choices, while the Firecracker roll didn't quite hit the mark for us, so we sent it back. For the tapas, we sampled the miso garlic sea bass, Thai pesto risotto, and the Szechuan peppercorn filet mignon. The sea bass was a bit underwhelming, and the risotto didn't quite land with my friends. The filet mignon, however, was flavorful, though it had to be sent back once to get the temperature right. Once corrected, it was definitely a highlight. One note: our reservation was at 7 p.m., and even with daylight still outside, the DJ's music was very loud, making conversation a bit difficult. This might be part of the atmosphere they're aiming for, but it's worth knowing if you're looking for a quieter experience. Overall, I think this place has great potential. It's a fun spot for cocktails and vibes, especially if you're in the area. I'd give them a bit more time to settle in, but I wouldn't rule out returning in the future as they continue to refine their experience.

Yelp
The ambiance and aesthetic of Kata is stunning. It's modern, sleek, and perfect for a chic night out. The service was excellent; the staff was incredibly attentive and made sure I felt well taken care of throughout the evening. As for the food, the sea bass and mashed potatoes were delicious, though I was expecting more of a wasabi kick in the mash--it wasn't noticeable. The chicken dumpling was flavorful and beautifully presented. The drinks, however, were just okay. They leaned a bit too sweet for my taste, and the espresso martini, while served in an elegant glass, didn't leave much of an impression in flavor or presentation. The dessert was the true standout. The banana crumble cookie pie was phenomenal! Perfectly textured, not overly sweet, and felt like the cherry on top of the meal. Overall, the vibe and food were worth the visit. I'd definitely come back with a friend. Update: Never received my $25 back from the reservation.

Yelp
This place is a gem for its dinner service. Do yourself a favor and try the duck breast and or filet mignon which were both perfectly balanced. About half the menu is gluten free, which was a nice surprise. Service is also top, the night we visited the owner stopped by to show us around, treated us like old friends. It was such a VIP feeling out of the blue. Completely impressed with the food and service.

Yelp
Go to Kata DC. Grab a drink. Get the Bánh Mì Sliders. Thank me later. These sliders are unreal -- juicy marinated pork belly tucked into warm, toasted bao buns. They've got that perfect balance: rich, savory meat, tangy pickled veggies, and a creamy cilantro aioli that ties it all together. It's a delicious twist on the classic Vietnamese bánh mì -- one of the best I've had in DC right now. Kata nails the vibe too. The space is sleek, modern, and just the right amount of moody --making it perfect for a date night or a low-key hang with friends. Will be returning on a Thurs, Fri, or Sat to see what the vibe is like.

Yelp
A VIBE. i just left here and to my surprise it was only their second night open. i took myself on a solo date and sat at the bar, reservations are recommended and costs $25 person, applied toward your bill. it's super nice in here, very date night, upscale, lively vibes. drinks are at least $20 each but the food is moderately priced honestly- minimum average of $15 for sushi rolls and ramen (i ate the veg options). i spent a total of roughly $100 (including the $25 deposit and automatic 18% gratuity added to your bill) for a cocktail, sake, sushi roll, and ramen-- with leftovers to take home. at 11:11pm them fans come out and the energy of the restaurant shifts to lounge vibes with a live DJ and a fire lady lol, literally. It truly was such an experience that you don't wanna miss! i will absolutely be back!

Yelp
The restaurant is new and very elegant. The service is attentive and professional. I did not particularly find the food menu amazing. Very few choices and the pasta too Americanized. I got gnocchi but they were not traditional style, as they barely tasted like potatoes.

Yelp
Kata really missed the mark! I'll start by saying the tables there weren't situated for our party of 9. We were using the cocktail tables for a full service dinner. The chicken dumpling wasn't flavorful and included a milk based sauce that wasn't listed on the menu. The cocktails weren't great and for $24 it should be mixed proportionally. The little things that they need to work on ultimately add up.

Yelp
Chic new spot in the heart of DC. Amazing cocktails, outstanding service, delicious sushi and dumplings, with great entertainers. I loved the fire dancer experience.

R S.

Yelp
This is what DC has been missing! As a new restaurant they still have lots of kinks they need to smooth out but overall my experience was great. We sat at the bar which was very busy the bartender suggested the sea bass which was cooked to perfection and full of flavor We also ordered the firecracker sushi which was delicious and you get 10 pieces of sushi for $18 which is awesome Service was a bit slow as they were clearly understaffed, but our Bartender handled it very well and still managed to be as attentive as possible. She was very personable and warm and made us a killer espresso martini. Will definitely be returning to see the fire Dancer on the weekends

Yelp
