Katagiri is a fantastic one-stop shop for a wide variety of daily Japanese snacks, drinks and even common grocery store items all at fanastic prices considering their location in NYC. While appearing rather small they have a fantastic selection and they use the space well with tall shelving! They often have sales and specials in a certain section in the middle of the store. Along with their pre-packaged hot or cold meals, they have a ramen shop and a separate Onigiri shop inside. The Onigiri are all made on-site, with a fantastic selection of different fillings all very well priced. I cannot recommend this place enough, especially this location if you're coming from Grand Central right around the corner. You'll find yourself coming back for sure!!

I usually go there everyday for rice balls the one with oysters are delicious and they have fresh to go sushi sometimes lines get really long during the peaks but this little supermarket is good for people who’s working around this area but sometimes need to check a expiration date on food just to be sure

Katagiri has been open since 1907 and is the oldest Japanese grocery store/market in NYC - you can read the history of the store on their website. They have two stores (the other is on E 59th) and neither one is particularly big. The Grand Central store carries almost everything you would need to make Japanese dishes, but the produce section is limited. Somehow, they manage to cram outposts of Omusubi Gonbei and Brooklyn Ramen into the store as well. I’ve never tried the ramen, but the omusubi are made fresh with rice from Hokkaido and are quite good with an interesting assortment of fillings. The fresh fish/seafood and sushi/sashimi takeout is outsourced to Osakana, which is based in the East Village. In addition, they also carry their own range of various take-out bento which are kept warm and priced well. If you are looking for some good, quick Japanese take-out, Katagiri is a great option in the Grand Central area. The only downside is that there is no seating, but when the weather is nice, you can walk over to Bryant Park and enjoy your meal there. Otherwise, you can always go to the dining concourse at Grand Central.

I first thought this was just a Japanese grocery store until my co-worker told me that they had the best ramen soup. I had only tried ramen soup once before that day and had not been impressed. I was signing a new tune when I tried the Truffle Dumpling ramen soup here and I go there at least every other week. especially if I'm cold or feel like I'm coming down with one. That soup can cure sore throats and hypothermia. It is $16 but it's so filling that I don't feel the need to snack at work. You do have to go in like first to then cash register and pay. Then you go to the ramen soup section and give them your receipt so they can make it. They also have other options but they have vegetables so I avoid them, lol. While you're in line (it's usually long), you walk by their products and I was so happy to see that they sell strawberry Kit Kats and Hello Kitty shaped chocolates because those are my daughter's favorites. If you're in the area and you're looking for something to warm you up, then stop by this grocery store.

My first time here, I was in a rush to grab some onigiris before running to catch my train, and so I didn't get to really explore. However, the second time around, I came back as I was nearby and remembered that they had discounted hot foods after 7pm! I may have been a little too late since there wasn't many options left but I went with a tonkatsu bento box and some sushi to share with my friends. It seems that their fish comes from Osakana who serves fresh fish on the daily so I was pretty excited to try it! Everything was pretty good but my only gripe is that the katsu tasted soggy but that would make sense since it had sat there for awhile. Outside of the hot and prepared food, they do have authentic Japanese ingredients and groceries. I was even able to find some food that I had eaten in Japan but could never find here! Definitely a spot I will return to!

Lunchtime favorite near Grand Central- while the line during the lunch hour can get insane (wrapping around the store), the cashiers do a great job at keeping things moving, so you'll be out before you know it. (But still, try to get there earlier rather than later) Towards the entrance, there is Omusubi Gonbei, offering various types of rice balls- from the classics (mentaiko, umeboshi, etc) to the more hip ones (spam Musubi! ones with tempura sticking out of it! ones with fragrant herbs!) Around lunch time, you can see the staff making them by hand. Lunch time favorites include the premade rice bowls (beef bowls, broiled eel bowls, etc), sushi, bento boxes and the Brooklyn Ramen. They also have hiyashi ramen (chilled ramen) in the fridges, which is one of my favorite dishes during the summer. Also can't forget the grocery stuffs- pick up some Japanese veggies, dry goods and more. They have small but pretty significant sales at times so check it out.

A little bit of a hidden gem I think. Kind of tucked away by Grand Central. There is at least one other location that I know of. They have been around since the early 1900's I believe which is pretty cool. Anything Japanese as far as groceries go, they have. Snacks, drinks, frozen food, fresh meat, etc. They also have an amazing fresh food section with pre made food. Obviously it's better stocked earlier in the day as they make it fresh everyday. There's also a ramen bar tucked inside as well. There's only a few seats though. I always make it a point to stop in when I'm in the area.

I stopped by this grocery store before heading to the airport to pick up some lunch. I was surprised to see Shiso leaf onigiri, which is one of my favorites! I also got a salmon one and a chicken karaage bento. The onigiri had a good balance between rice and filling... most places will make theirs with too much rice. The chicken karaage bento was the perfect meal to eat on the go. Karaage was crisp and full of flavor. Loved the veggies on the side as well as the egg! The grocery store itself has essentially everything you need to make a delicious Japanese meal at home!

Kataguri is a great one-stop shop for Japanese groceries and fresh food, including lunch boxes. They offer a variety of sushi and bento boxes for takeout. It gets really busy during peak lunch hours, but the line moves quickly. They're known for their onigiri rice balls, but my favorite is the cold beef udon--it's packed with flavor, sweet and really delicious.

When I realized that this place was two or three stops away from my work, I made it part of my routine to make the 10 minute trip ever lunch hour. Glad to be able to find some options to eat that are a bit more affordable and tasty. It's usually pretty crowded during lunch hour so anticipate waiting in a line, but it goes by pretty fast. One of the best in NYC. They've got everything Sunrise Mart and Dainobu has, and they do their own little thing by offering their style of rice balls/onigiri at the entrance of the shop. Thing is though, their onigiri are better than other spots I've been to. In fact, their onigiri takes #1 spot for me, above Sunrise Mart and Dainobu. I like them so much for a few reasons. For one, they serve the onigiri with marinated rice. The flavor is subtle and a little savory. Their chicken karaage onigiri has a generous sized piece of fried chicken resting at the center of the marinated white rice (which has a nice, darkened look to it). The chicken itself was fresh and tasted as if it had been fried within the hour. The freshness was a nice plus along with the portion. Third was the aesthetic of it. It was hand made sure, but the presentation gave a sense of being prepared at home by a mom. Really cozy and personal feel to it. Shape was actually very round and not the traditional triangle style. That added to the homemade feel. I'll be trying their spam musubi next, which was actually even larger than the karaage and will update this review whenever. Thanks Katagiri.

Katagiri is the oldest Japanese grocery in the US. Known for their onigiri, a quick stop was made to snag one of these babies. Entering the store, an abundance of pre-made onigiri can be spotted. All of their offerings are in plain view and are ready for purchase. They have a wide selection of authentic Japanese products, including fresh produce, sushi-grade fish, snacks, sauces, and kitchenware . Take-away bento, ramen, chirasi, sushi, sashimi, omusubi gonbei, donburi, musubi....are also available at a reasonable price. Everything is fresh. If you're unsure about anything, ask, the staff is friendly and helpful. The Takana Onigiri was really good. I'll be back for more (Onigiri) along with a sushi and sashimi take-away.

The Japanese convenience store feel right in the heart of midtown. Going to Katagiri Japanese Grocery store is like traveling to your typical Japanese conbini, Family Mart or Lawson's, except you don't need a plane ticket. Located a few blocks away from Grand Central station, Katagiri Japanese Grocery is centrally located in midtown. Foodwise, Katagiri has a very large selection of Japanese foods, including prepackaged bentos (with hamburger steak, chicken katsu, etc.) and onigiri (Japanese style rice balls) (with a variety of different fillings). On my visit, I ordered a hamburger bento, some shumai (Chinese shrimp/pork dimsum) and a bottle of tea. The menchi katsu was very filling and satisfying, and it paired perfectly with the tea. The store is self service, so you just pick whatever you want to eat and pay at the register. All in all, a solid Japanese conbini in the heart of midtown.

This cute little Japanese market reminds me of 7/11 and Family Mart back in Japan. The onigiri was so good. And the service is amazing! I forgot to tell the cashier I needed a bag before she rang up the purchase and I didn't have the exact change to pay for just the bag. I offered to pay but the lady refused and just waived the bag fee.

Despite the busy atmosphere, the staff have an efficient system in place to manage the line, as most customers are local workers. We sought out this spot in NYC and felt so happy about our impromptu lunch! The store has delicious-looking variety of fresh foods - tempura sets, tonkatsu, sushi bowls, sashimi and nigiri. When you first walk into the store, on the left is an entire station of onigri with trays of many, many types, all hot! We opted for a mostly salmon sushi plate, tender fresh takoyaki, and several onigri. We almost went back for more and we loved their hot, diverse selection of onigri better than any of the other takeaway stores we stopped visited in the city. Highly recommend and would love to come back!

I was shocked by how good the rice balls were and karaage chicken and how filling it is. The fried chicken was so darn good. Even when slightly cold, it was so delicious. Super convenient one stop shop if you are craving something quick and Japanese near Grand Central. There is fresh sushi and chirashi available from Oksana, made to order onigiri from Omusubi Gonbei, and ramen from Brooklyn Ramen. Like most Japanese grocery chains in the city, they also have house made bentos that I believe are discounted towards the end of the day. The line snakes around the entire store during the lunch rush, so I would advise avoiding it if possible. Although the line moves quickly, definitely factor in an extra 20 minutes if you brave the lines then.

Katagiri is great. It's a Japanese grocery store close to Grand Central, with a good selection of Japanese / other Asian items that you sometimes can't find elsewhere. Visiting NYC from Washington DC (DMV area), we visited this place to have authentic onigiri ($2.80 - $3.50) and curry tonkotsu ramen ($15). There are so many Onigiri menu, and the tastes are super authentic and we felt the price of these are very reasonable. This ramen is very tasty and the chashu is big and very tasty. I would love to have this place in DMV area... I was struck by the level of quality of foods we had today.

Amazing. This is a great place to get your Asian/Japanese food fix for not that much money! FYI lunch predictably gets really busy and the line is so long that it often curves around. However, it does move decently fast. The onigiri is delicious and freshly made every morning (great to have for breakfast along with a serving of miso soup!). Also have a variety of hot dishes, and of course, sushi. I basically come here every day that my work brings me nearby, and would highly recommend checking it out!

this place is hidden :) love the decor! everything is in and they also put a place to eat and have microwave. Onigiri was too round shapes....and it wasn't my taste. I was expecting to get stationaries but they didn't have them. most of the food is very cheap compared to other store in Downtown Japanese Store; danobu/Yamadaya/sunrise market. I wonder when they opened at this location? On Lex, there are Starbucks, Dunkin' and other cafes to hangout. It's very close to the Grand-central station.

Katagiri has quickly become my new favorite lunch spot. Although since it's also a grocery store, I end up buying way too many snacks and treats on top of my lunch so sometimes I end up spending more than if I had picked up lunch at another place. But then I have snacks and treats to last me a couple days which is the perk. It's been fun trying out new meals each time as well. They have so many different options to choose from. I always find myself grabbing a spam musubi on my way in from the front counter, then picking up a rice bowl as well as various snacks and candy. Don't be intimidated by the long line - it moves quickly and since it wraps around the back half of the store, you can shop while you wait.

This was my first time being so fascinated by everything in a grocery store. Each selection looked so good! Right when you step in, the Omusubi Gonbei stand greets you with trays of rice balls and mouthwatering smells. There was also a good range of drinks, mochi, and sushi and omakase selections as you walk along the aisle. We bought a bunch of omusubi for our picnic. First up, the Nitamago was one of the most unique and my recommended pick. With a soy braised soft boiled egg hidden inside, this treat is a prime example of simple goodness. The Fried Oyster ($3.30) was also distinct as I never had oyster in rice before, let alone fried. You could taste the seawater for sure! But the key was the mayo-like sauce, that sadly was only there for the initial bites. My mistake for thinking Mentaiko ($2.60) was going to be good, but it really is just a bunch of tiny, tiny bursts of salt. The Spam ($3.70) was not as safe tasting as I expected. The egg was a tamago, hence sweeter than I would prefer my eggs to be! The Spicy Tuna ($2.30) and Grilled Eel ($3.40) were the true safe ones that tasted like what you would expect them to be. Although I didn't enjoy all of my rice ball picks, the store staff were friendly, efficient, and professional and the selections were all so enticing! This would be my go-to lunch spot if I was in the area!

When I'm in Manhattan, I tend to look for Japanese markets like these so I can save some money on food (mostly breakfast) and I grab a lot of onigiri. The to-go sushi is also much better quality than most I've had from grocery stores or non-Japanese owned sushi carryout places. The price point is too good to pass up, so try their sushi and sashimi! On top of all their food options, the customer service is also great! They ask if you need utensils when you checkout and answer any questions you have about their products. I wish we had stores like this back at home. This place is a quick walk from Grand Central Terminal, literally just 1 block!

I absolutely love Katagiri. I was introduced to this grocery store by a friend who works nearby (she's been coming here for lunch for ages now). This is a great spot for grab and go, the workers are really love and friendly, and the prices are fair, for what they're offering. Quick caveat: I've noticed a couple reviews saying that Katagiri is pretty small. To be honest, they're not wrong. Everything is very compact, but tidy. During lunchtime / evenings, lines can go around the store (a positive for me, because I usually use that time to shop some more. Plus, check-out moves pretty fast, so you'll be in and out in no time). The goods: - every kind of Japanese snack / goodie you could possibly want. They have aisles for snacks, a section for sushi-grade fish, and an entire section full of Asian drinks - their ready-to-eat food includes Bento boxes, sushis, and donburis. They also have ramen + a lot of their grab-and-go products will go on sale later in the afternoon (think 6-7 PM), so you can always snag a great deal - their onigiri / musubi offerings are sooo good. This is one of my favorite snacks, and I always make a point to grab a few when I'm in the area (they're usually ~$3-4 for one, depending on what you get) TLDR: definitely come to Katagiri + I highly recommend trying out one of their Bentos

A MUST GO lunch place by Grand Central. Affordable and delicious. You can pick your onigiri from the menu, they have an entire bar of them. They also have an udon and ramen bar, and sections of premade foods for lunch. Donburi, kaarage chicken, and the Omusube Gonsei Onigiri bar. Can't speak enough of this place, it is amazing with tons of options and they have the best menu of many Japanese groceries for the location and price is super affordable.

Great store for Japanese snacks and some prepared foods. There are prepackaged ramen bowls from Brooklyn Ramen for purchase along with onigiri balls made on-site. The staff is friendly and answered all my questions. Highly recommend trying some of the snacks and dango (similar to mochi). Only reason I'm docking a star is because some of the items weren't labeled very well making it hard for dietary restrictions. Things to know -In NYC there is a 5cent charge per bag so bring your own! -store is small but has lots of variety -hours Monday through Friday: 8am-9pm Saturday and Sunday:10am to 8pm

Popped in a bit before closing so the selection was a bit sparse, but that's my own fault. :) They had some deals at the end of the day to clear out their foods, which tells me it's made daily. We got the Japanese tacos, potato croquette, and some onigiri bombs. Everything was delicious and fairly priced. The tortillas used were just a tad dry. I'd return! I periodically work in Midtown East, and I am slowly getting myself acclimated to the lunch offerings in the area (which there are plenty of). One of my colleagues suggested we grab something from Katagiri since they have a good variety and a number of lunch options available. I'm always open to try something new, so off we went. As the name suggests, Katagiri is a Japanese grocery store - they have a large variety of merch and you can easily get lost browsing all they have to offer. Karagiri does go beyond the grocery component, though, as there is also hot and hold to-go dishes available as well as sushi and made-to-order selections. Since I was looking for lunch, I was browsing their hot bento boxes. They have a few proteins to choose from, and ultimately I went with the karaage fried chicken; the box also came with rice and some pickled vegetables and egg. I enjoyed the box - the chicken as juicy, and the vegetables provided a good complement. Checkout was fast, and overall I had a good first experience at Karagiri. The authentic selections and tasty food make it a welcome addition to my go-tos for lunch in Midtown.

I am so happy to find a good selection of interesting flavors of rice balls. The Spam musubi is as good as the originals invented in Hawaii. Lots of good take away, great for a picnic, office meal or a no cook night. They have a very good selection of groceries too. I have not tried their soup noodles yet, but I will soon. Wow! What a gem. The literal best as their prepared foods and groceries are all so good. I love the Toro Omakase from Osakana and the teriyaki salmon bowl was tasty. Prices are decent, but still pricey, but very fair for the quality. I also go shopping here for my soy milk and my tofu. Have gone back multiple times already. Update: The website says they are open 8AM to 9PM daily. Katagiri is open till 8PM on Saturday and Sunday! I just wanted to point that out as I was about to go yesterday, but thankfully called the store before making a trip there!

Holy freshness, Batman! Who thought a supermarket would have such high quality sushi, and a great selection of Asian items for sale, to boot? I found this place on Yelp and decided to try it based on the reviews. They were spot on and this place didn't disappoint. When you walk in, there is a station to the left making rice triangles filled with protein goodness. I had a brown rice and salmon. The salmon was cooked, but tender and flavorful. The rice was very dense and did not fall apart as you ate it. I also got a sushi lunch, uni from the seafood counter and some Poppin cookins for the kids. This place is awesome and a well kept secret. Well, not so well-kept as the lines get really long between noon and one.

Poorly laid out. Cramped interior. Soggy rice balls. Expensive produce and prepared foods. 6 pieces of sushi and half a veggie roll for $20. It's betting on location, near GCT and some airport buses right outside. But you're a Yelper so you can do better. There are awesome tacos down the street and pizza across the way if you need food.

Definitely the best grocery store sushi I've had, for ~$14 per item (chirashi bowl and nigiri+salmon roll combo). I'll focus on my item, which was the combo box. I loved the variety of nigiri, from your standard salmon, to a pleasantly gooey squid. All the fish tasted really fresh and appropriately fatty. The avocado in my salmon roll was of impeccable quality. I was impressed with the quality of the soy sauce packet; it was much better than the soy sauce from something like a Kroger sushi box.
