The Best Jewish Delis in Los Angeles, According to Eater Editors

"This longtime Los Alamitos institution has a wide menu of classic diner and coffee shop fare to go along with stellar Jewish deli sandwiches. The pastrami is as respectable as any great Los Angeles deli, and the matzo ball, featuring a softball-sized load of carbs plus thin noodles, could weave a legend on its own. While Katella may not look like the classic Jewish deli, the flavors stand up to the test in dishes like the tender potato knishes." - Rebecca Roland

The 38 Essential Orange County Restaurants

"The family-owned Los Alamitos landmark founded by Stan Ratman and his wife Shirley is known for its deli food and stocked bakery case that has black-and-white cookies, pastries such as custard-filled eclairs, chocolate chip Danishes, and rugelach. The family-sized portions allow diners to nosh on several dishes at once. Rotund matzo balls are served in Shirley’s chicken soup and rye bread pastrami sandwiches remain a Katella favorite. The vibe is family-friendly with a multi-generational crowd in the dining room, which was remodeled in 2022. The bakery section has illuminated cases filled with slices of layer cakes, cookies, and glistening fruit tarts, baskets filled with bagels, and a smattering of deli items available for takeaway." - Jenn Tanaka

18 Awesome Orange County Bakeries to Try Right Now

"Since 1964, the Los Alamitos location of Katella Bakery has been known for serving no-frills classics, including a staple black and white cookie. The bakery’s recipes come from the original owner Sam Ratman, who opened Katella Bakery with his wife Shirley. Today, their children and a bakery crew keep up the tradition with a menu that includes lox with cream cheese on toasted bagels, cinnamon-dusted bagel chips, and whole loaves of pumpernickel and seedless rye bread. Buttery challah is braided through with raisins and sold alongside cases filled with New York-style cheesecake, danishes, and rugelach." - Jenn Tanaka

We went Saturday evening around 730, and there was minimal wait to get seated. Service was good. Food tasted great. Those onion rings were really crispy, and the ranch that came with it was perfect. The sandwiches tasted great. I was just sad that good bagels were out, and the pricing on food is a bit high, but if you are willing to pay the price, it's most likely worth it.

I came to this restaurant around 11 a.m., and it was busy. Which is a good sign for any business. We did have to wait about 20 minutes to receive our food. As i looked around, i didn't see any worker standing around. They were all busy working their own stations. I was glad to see that even though they were busy, there wasn't a sign of trash on the floors, empty tables, or restrooms. There wasnt any stains on the floors, tables. This restaurant seems to be very big on cleanliness.

Katella Deli Bakery & Restaurant is a feast for the eyes and the palate. The moment you step inside, you’re greeted by a stunning display of freshly baked bread, pastries, and desserts. The bakery is truly a dessert lover’s dream—so much so that it’s hard to choose where to start! The atmosphere is beautiful and inviting, making it a perfect spot for dates, family gatherings, or a relaxed meal. However, despite the amazing ambiance and food selection, our experience was marred by an incredibly long wait for our orders—over 30 minutes. It genuinely felt like our orders had been forgotten. By the time the food arrived, my hunger had passed, and I could barely eat half of my sandwich, which was truly disappointing. The manager did come over to apologize and offered a complimentary slice of cheesecake, which was a kind gesture, but no customer should have to wait that long, especially when they’re hungry. While the food was good and the cheesecake was appreciated, the wait time detracted from an otherwise perfect experience. If it weren’t for that awful wait, Katella would have earned a 5-star review from me. Hopefully, this was just an off day for their service because the potential for an amazing dining experience is definitely there. PS: Apparently it wasn’t an off day. It’s June 9, 2025 and I am here again. We’ve been waiting for over 40 minutes (and counting). 😢

Kattela Deli is a cozy, spacious spot with a great vibe. They serve fresh cakes, a variety of cookies and sweets, and really good sandwiches. Perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a relaxed afternoon snack. We were 12 people and got a private room, then enjoyed the balcony with fresh air, ocean breeze, and lovely decor. I’ll definitely be going back!

We didn't come here for fast food. We came on a Sunday and knew it would be a while. This was just fine, as my friend and I were in no hurry. While waiting, we had coffee and walked around, taking in the artistry of the breads, cookies, and pastries. Seated, we took our time ordering, and when our food arrived, we enjoyed a long, relaxing, and delicious meal. We spent several hours visiting the Katella Deli last Sunday, and not a moment was wasted.

Google
Redemption at Katella Bakery Deli! After a previous misfire, we gave them another shot - and boy, did they deliver! Meghan, our server, was like a ninja: swift, stealthy, and always on target. She kept our coffee cups full, smiles bright, and the counter crowd happy. Food-wise, my companion raved about the New York, New York bagel (everything on it, of course!), while I devoured the Monto Cristo (crunchy, ham-tastic, and mouthwatering). No Bloody Marys were harmed in the making of our meal, but the service with green olives and very spicy how I like it. Moral of the story: sometimes you just need to give 'em another chance. it takes one server like Meghan to make us come back. Katella Bakery Deli, you've won us over -

Google
Great place to get bakery items and deli style sandwiches among other things. We got pastrami sandwiches one just plain and the other was rye bread with cheese and thousand island which were very tasty. We got fresh bagels and some other treats on the way out which were also good.

Yelp
This place is very nice. Good food, good service. Thanks Alex, Daniel, Sal for serving us very carefully.

Yelp
Great deli sandwich. The homemade cheesecake is to-die-for delicious. They also have a huge bakery counter with fresh bagels, pastries and cookies. We ate at the bar counter. Our server, Sal, was awesome!

Yelp
Been coming to KD for years. Always get the pastrami sandwich with onion rings, which they make in house. Service is always on point and the staff are attentive. Since the remodel, its hard not to feel good here! On the way out, grab a couple cream puffs!

Yelp
Had family in town, and wanted to find a locale with something for everyone. Katella Bakery & Restaurant fit the bill. Breakfast all day (waffle here), lunch options, and a bakery for shopping gave every member of our group something to enjoy! Check out this Orange County institution next time you're nearby!

Yelp
Yelp friends and I decided to check out newly renovated restaurant! Wow! Just upon parking the structure was very inviting with the very well lit up outdoor patio!! Entering the double door was like stepping in a winter wonderland! Simple silver holiday decorations made place so elegant! Got seated into a semi circular booth for 5. Isabel our server gave a stellar service. We ordered our food and everyone enjoyed the meal ! I ordered the BEEF STROGANOFF which had very tender braised beef short ribs, button mushrooms, pasta and plenty of the traditional gravy sauce topped with sour cream!!! Soooooo yummmmmy !!!! Love the generous serving of all the ingredients!!! Will be back again to bring hubby!!!

Yelp
So disappointed in Katella restaurant. I want to love this place. It's gorgeous inside and they did such an excellent job with the remodel. The atmosphere is so warm and inviting but they now need to focus again on service and food. We sat at the bar and it wasn't too busy. We ordered the matzo ball soup, latkes, and pastrami sandwich on rye with the onion rings. The matzo ball soup was tasty, it did need some salt and pepper added though. I would order this to go when I need matzo ball soup in the future. The latkes were underwhelming and felt uninspired. The pastrami sandwich was the most disappointing sandwich I've had. For $21.99 and a $4 surcharge for onion rings, it was the smallest plate of food. We got 6 onion rings. Ridiculous. The sandwich came with the tail end of the rye bread. They put like 3 slices of pastrami. Half the sandwich was dwarfed in my hand. It was laughable. I should have sent it back but I was hungry and left hungry. It took about 35-40 minutes to get food. And trying to get a side of ranch was so difficult that I gave up. This review is not for the bakery. Just the restaurant side.

Yelp
Katella Bakery has been a favorite of mine for quite some time, and I've always appreciated the consistently great food--both in the café and the bakery. Their festive treats make for wonderful gifts, and they've never disappointed in terms of quality and flavor. Typically, the service here matches the caliber of the food, even when the restaurant is overwhelmingly busy. However, my most recent visit was an unfortunate exception. While I understand the challenges of managing a bustling establishment, this experience fell short of the usual standard. Our food took over an hour to arrive after ordering, and several items were missing. By the time those missing items were served, our main plates were already finished. Getting the attention of our server was nearly impossible--I had to flag down other staff members for assistance. We waited so long for cutlery that we ended up retrieving it ourselves from the server station, and we had to scavenge salt, pepper, and condiments from nearby empty tables. Refills were a constant request rather than a proactive part of the service. It's worth noting that we were seated outside, where foot traffic from servers seemed lower, which may have contributed to the lapses. While this experience was disappointing, I'm giving them grace, as this hasn't been the norm in my previous visits. Katella Bakery is still a solid choice for its excellent food and festive offerings, but I hope they address the service issues to maintain the great reputation they've built.

Yelp
It's been many years since we visited Katella Bakery. It's a beautiful restaurant, after the remodel 3 years ago. We ordered a few sandwich dinners and a salad and a matzo ball soup. My fav was soup, served piping pot and hit the spot after being out in a chilly night. The sandwiches were good. I felt the portions were in the small side. The $5 upgrade from fries to onion rings wasn't worth it given how few rings you get. We took a few desserts home and of course also a container of the cinnamon sugar bagel crisp. The service was also great, especially the dessert counter.

Yelp
Been a regular here for quite a few months already and the food here is good, filling and reasonably priced! Service here is good here too. Aside from that this place has a cafe, bar, diner seating area, bakery and the dining area which is a huge place. Every time I've came here I've tried something new and so far NOTHING has disappointed me.

Yelp
We heard from some friends that this place was good, so we decided to give it a try since we in the area and looking for a light meal. It was mid-afternoon on a Friday, and the place was packed. We were seated right away, which was nice. Interesting exterior but the interior was lacking a cohesive design between the bakery and the restaurant. Our server was friendly and attentive. We ordered the chicken noodle soup and chopped liver. When the soup arrived, we noticed a puddle of spill on the serving platter. The presentation was unappetizing. It was basically a bowl of noodles with very little soup. And where's the chicken? The chopped liver was okay, but it was plain and unflavored. Unimpressed, we decided to skip dessert to avoid any further disappointment.

Yelp
We waited over an hour to be seated, then it took a bother hour to get our food. we will not be going back there ever ever again

Yelp
This is a very busy time of year, so we waited an hour for a table for 7 people. We got the same table that we sat at last year. It took a long time for the drinks to arrive. The potato pancakes were delicious- hot and crispy. They came with fresh fruit and tiny paper cups with apple sauce and sour cream. My roast beef sandwich on rye bread had lean meat and cheddar cheese. Food was good. Also bought pastries from the wonderful bakery.

Yelp
My family and I haven't been here in many years. Once I saw it had been remodeled I thought it would be nice to stop in. As a kid my parents brought me here and we enjoyed it. I put my name down at 12:05. I was quoted a 30-35 minute wait. It ended up being an hour. We decided to pick up some pastries and bagels first for kids and my dad who was with us. Sadly once back home they gave me the wrong pastry. After an hour wait we were seated. From the time we sat down until we received our food it had been over an hour. It's clear that they don't have enough cooks. The waiters were standing around waiting for the food to come out. Just before it had been an hour the waitress finally stopped by so I asked her to please bring out the food as it came up. My dad ordered a lox platter so I'm not sure why that took so long. After the six of us received our food it was just over an hour. The waitress never stopped by to see if we needed a refill. I saw the manager go by so I asked her. Since our waitress didn't come by I also asked for the check. Overall it was a very long day there and the food is just ok. I don't see myself going back anytime soon.

Yelp
First time visit. Plenty of parking. Saturday night around 7:00, 10 minute wait for a table so we sat at the bar. Ordered pastrami sandwich and bba chicken pizza. Both came out quick and tasted great. Flavor, size, temperature and price were all good. Will definitely return. All the staff were nice and helpful.

Yelp
See all my other reviews! Today is about the bakery! Katella is the best with pastries, cakes, pies, tarts, muffins and most all cookies! Italian cookies: sprinkles, think chocolate chip, chunky chocolate chips, Neapolitan trip color traditional Italian Cookies! Butter cookies filled with apricot or raspberry jam dipped in chocolate! Soft sweet coconut macaroons dipped in chocolate! There is no other bakery with the selection of Italian cookies anywhere, especially Not in Honolulu, so I bought 3 dozen: 6 of each! Do not want to have any regret! Even had to get 2 bran muffins and a black and white cookie for a friend back home in Honolulu! Bakery is so bright and cheerful! Kennedy, my server, is very nice, friendly and patient!

Yelp
I am finally back to the Katella bakery today. Loved the remodeling was done lately. Beautiful, contemporary style and modern interior. I give 5 stars for the ambiance. But too busy around 10 this morning. I got my name on the waiting list to eat brunch. No patience more than 20 mins to seat at the table....haha. Finally my husband and I sat at the bar instead of table, canceled my reservation for the 2 people on text. Ordered the Denver Omelette, classic burger, jelapeno bagel w cream cheese and draft beer. I was so hungry this morning, everything was good. The portion is not that much. The staff and bartenders are so friendly. We had a great time during our brunch. One thing I don't like here is the parking. There is huge strip mall parking lot but pretty tough to find a parking because so many different businesses are there. Really tough. For breads, cookies, most of them are so good but some pastries like chocolate croissant is not really French style, bagel is not authentic German bagel taste, some cakes are really buttery. I like cheese cakes. Overall, they remodeled the entire facilities so well, I feel like I am at Porto's. Pros Breads, pastries, cookies: 4 out of 5 Foods, beer: $$, beer $9.50 Service: 4 stars Ambiance: 5 stars, comfy, modern Cons Parking: 1 star, really tough Waiting time: packed all the time, minimum waiting time is 25 to 30 mins You need a lot of patience here, for wating or ordering some pastries, cakes.

Yelp
TLDR - don't buy their focaccia sandwiches or the crispy chicken sandwich. The bakery is decent, but doesn't beat Porto's. I came here with my partner at 12pm on a Saturday and was told there would be a 30 minute wait. I was pretty hungry at the time so we decided to just order take out and eat it at the tables outside. I didn't expect this, but the wait time for the food turned out to be 30 minutes as well. I bought a few pastries and cookies to munch on while waiting for my food - I got the thin crunchy cookie, a chocolate chip danish, and a ham and cheese croissant. The croissant was pretty decent, but only had a very small slice of meat. The cookie was surprisingly better than I expected. The danish was just okay. The wait for the food felt like forever, but when I finally got it, I could already tell that it would be disappointing. First of all, I would like to say that I got catfished by this sandwich (Italian boss). If you look on their website and menu photos, the focaccia bread is a whole inch in thickness. What I actually got must have been 1/8th of an inch.... basically non-existent. The sandwich tasted like it's been made and left out for at least 20 minutes. The bread tasted pretty hard and stale all around, a little chewy (not the good kind). I was initially excited for the pistachio pesto since I've never seen that anywhere else. However, I couldn't even taste it as I was eating it since the flavors were dominated by all the other ingredients, which were all pretty average. Next, I tried the crispy chicken sandwich. This item was also very subpar (except for the fries - those were dope). The sandwich wasn't very crispy as the name suggests. The chicken was very bland (but oddly enough not dry), paired with a very bland coleslaw/sauce as well. Overall I was pretty disappointed with the quality of the food because each of these were $20 per item. I went in there with high expectations, but I wouldn't pay more than $10 for this quality. This entire meal (excluding the pastries) was $50.... but it was money not well spent.

Yelp
Yes I'm changing my review for this restaurant. My husband ordered some food ahead of time and was told it would be ready in 20 minutes. When he arrived he was told it was not ready yet. He asked 3 different times to check on his order and sadly was not only ignored but wasn't given the same type of response as others asking for their food. He waited 30 more minutes when they finally brought the food out. No apologies or anything. Fries were cold and honestly all it was he waited for were pastrami sandwiches! Isn't the pastrami cooked ahead of time ?? If there's one thing I dislike is poor service and getting ignored. I'm sorry but this makes me not want to dine or order from here again. Maybe you need more cooks in the kitchen!!!
google avatar

Ben J.

Yelp
I struggle with writing a negative review but transparency vs nostalgia is important. First let me start by stating that issues are not related to the taste of the food. We had the Reuben, chopped liver starter and Randee's Double Pleasure. The pictures and previous experience was a sandwich stacked with pastrami and corned beef. Even though my order came out 15 minutes after my guest I was excited to devour this combo. It came out without any apology and the fries that I ordered extra crispy were proactively sent back. They arrived about five minutes later. Still no apology. This is half of the $25.99 sandwich. Poorly thrown together. Definitely not what was advertised. Our meal including an 18% tip was $90. It reminded me of the premade sandwiches at the airport. Really disappointed. .

Yelp
We went back to Katella Bakery after the remodeling was done. First, looks so beautiful, contemporary style ambiance like Porto's Buena Park. Same here packed from the morning. Waiting for the table, ordering bakery items.....nothing changed. We just decided to sit at the bar, took forever to sit at the table more than 30mins at least. I got the beer, classic burger, my wife had Denver omelette, jalapeño bagel w cream cheese. Everything was good, same portions, same tastes. We both liked the modern contemporary ambiance including huge coffee bean roasting machine. For the breads, pastries, pies, Some pastries are not french style, bagels are just o.k. Most of breads are good. Cake is not pricey but lots of butter Pros Menu, quality: 4 stars Portion: little small Price: $$ Ambiance: super 5 stars Cons Parking: 1 star, tough everytime Waiting time: more than 30 mins

Yelp
I always drive past this place on my way to work and the parking lot is always so packed. I decided to give this place a try. We ordered the focaccia italian boss sandwich, crispy chicken sandwich with fries and some pastries. The wait for to go was 35mins. The inside looks beautiful and is separated nicely into drinks, deli, bakery and to go orders. The focaccia bread and crispy chicken sandwich were $20 each. They were definitely not worth their price. The focaccia doesn't taste anything like the foccacias I've had. It was very thin and not as airy/fluffy with that nice crispy/crunchy top layer. I wouldn't order this again and definitely wouldn't recommend anyone to try this for $20. I would pay at most $10 for this. The crispy chicken sandwich had no flavor to the chicken. The chicken was nice and juicy and was indeed crispy but they didn't season the chicken whatsoever. Wish they marinated the chicken in some spice or something. The slaw and pickle was a nice touch but for $20 I expect either a bigger sandwich or for the small sandwich I got I would expect better flavor profile. I would pay at most $12 for this combo. The fries had more seasoning than the sandwich. The pastries were pretty good. It reminds me of portos but not as good and a bit smaller. The bagels looked amazing and I want to try that next time. Overall, for the price i paid and wait time, this place has not been worth it, hopefully they'll up their sandwich game. The pastries are definitely worth a try though.

Yelp
Went here for a ladies night out with friends a couple times. Each time there's usually close to 10 of us and every time I've been here the staff has always been top notch for making sure we're all satisfied! I personally love the corned beef dishes, but there's something for everyone here to choose from salads and soup to sandwiches, pasta, and pizza. It's nice that this place has restaurants a bakery and an area to just get a drink. I certainly enjoy ladies get togethers here!

Yelp
A few days ago we were looking for a place to have breakfast. At first, we were gonna drive to a restaurant two cities over.. then this place came up. We're always open to a deli! And this place was a nice one. My son really enjoyed the restaurant. I liked it so much, he was in awe of the bakery and the decor. He really loved the chair he sat in bc it was so comfy lol! Our waitress was so nice and provided me with recommendations on what to eat and the coffee. My son had their pizza. My husband had their Reuben sandwich with a corned beef. I had their smoked salmon tartine. Everything was delicious. We will be back soon!

Jonthan S.

Yelp
The portions are tiny and way over priced... the service is beyond slow (which is a shame because their service used to be fantastic). Their renovation is beautiful but they unfortunately went down in quality, service and portion sizes (I guess to pay for their renovation...???). This used to be my go to for deli food but unfortunately I won't be coming back after being a customer since I was a child.

Yelp
So there I was, flying in for a quick visit with family in Southern California. I ask a family member to come pick me up at the airport and we need to get some food and possibly an adult beverage right away. what does he do, he takes me to the Katella bakery. I'm glad you did. We got there early enough that we were able to avoid the crowd, but it was packed when we left. It makes me think this place is a hit all the time. It was a Sunday morning and it was just crowded. I'm always looking for a good Reuben sandwich and so that's what I choose. The family member that picked me up a pastrami sandwich with Swiss cheese because he doesn't like Sauerkraut like I do. The waiter suggested the onion rings as the side and so we did that. We were able to order them with a side of blue cheese to dip them in. I had never done this before, but it was worthwhile and I would order it with blue cheese again and again. Sure, it's 9 o'clock in the morning and so I opt into the Irish coffee. It was a good option and I would do it again. I forget how good these cocktails can be. So to conclude, I will not hesitate to go here again. I would carefully consider the time of day because I'm impatient. I don't want to wait for a crowd to thin out for me to sit down. Early is better.

Yelp
Today was truly the END of an era for me. My last visit to Karelia Deli. I started frequenting Katella Deli in 1995 when working at Mitsubishi Motors North Americas headquarters nearby. Katella Deli quickly became a favorite for me with the wide array of offerings on their menu. After leaving Mitsubishi in 2007 I frequented less often but periodically made the drive from Belmont Shore for a nice meal. In late October I had dinner here and was taken aback by spinning fly fans INSIDE their pastry display. My initial thought was "why would a fly fan be INSIDE" the case? There shouldn't be flies inside the case. Perplexed I stopped and took a peek at the display and was shocked to see flies gathered on the inside of the glass and more importantly... resting ON TOP of the pastries! I went to the hostess and let her know their pastry display was in bad shape with flies all over and someone should look into it ASAP. The hostess looked embarrassed and said she'd let someone know. I didn't want to walk back and take photos and I figured it was a "one off". Sadly, today my husband and I returned to Katella Deli and immediately upon entering we looked at the pastry display to find the fly fans had been removed but the flies were still INSIDE of the case... gathered on the INSIDE corners and more importantly, SITTING on top of the pastries. I hope management sees my post and resolves this very unsanitary and unsafe condition. The restaurant likely needs to 1) install an air curtain at the entrances of the restaurant 2) empty and sanitize the pastry displays DAILY 3) individually package baked goods. We did stay for dinner... but to be honest, we both had a difficult time eating our meal wondering what the kitchen might look like if management was ok with a display full of flies at the entry.

Yelp
Been going to this restaurant for over 40 yrs. Only Jewish restaurant around Orange County. They really have the best matzoh ball soup. They have a waitress at the restaurant. I think she's been there since Katella deli started. She is working the door and seating people in their chairs, but while she's one of the best waitresses I ever had and the most friendliest lady I've ever seen.

Yelp
I've been coming to Katella Deli since I was a child, and now, at 40 years old, it's still one of my favorite spots. Most recently, I had their chicken pot pie, and it was excellent! I'm also a huge fan of their bagel chips, and honestly, you can't go wrong with any of their pastries. If you're looking for a place with fresh bread, cookies, cakes, cheesecakes you name it. Katella Deli is the place to go. I love how they remodeled the restaurant and bakery; it feels so welcoming and updated, while still keeping that classic deli charm I've always loved. Highly recommend! I can't wait to explore more of the menu

Yelp
Always a treat when I get to pop in for a meal. The service is always amazing, the bakery always is stocked with tasty treats, and the dining experience is always on point. One of my favorite things about this restaurant is the ambiance. Whether sitting indoors or sitting outdoors either way this restaurant makes you feel like home. I'm not really sure the name of the dish I received because I didn't get what I ordered, but whatever it was it was good. I originally ordered the lox platter but it looks like I instead got the lox, eggs, and onions Leo. Definitely a happy accident because this dish tasted amazing. The iced coffee's here are always on point and I highly recommend ordering one if you are an iced latte connoisseur like myself. Overall, I highly recommend trying this restaurant. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Yummy! Came here for lunch during a day of running errands. Walked in a saw a huge bakery with a ton of yummy treats. The prices are good and quality is great! Once I got past the bakery we sat at the seats in there bistro area. Not sure why they didn't seat us in the dining room. It would have been fine but felt rushed because they were decorating the area for the holidays with ladders and staff. We ordered the fried zucchini for starters and it was crispy and delicious. I ordered the pot pie and it was ok not the best but not the worst. My table also got the French Dip and it was ok. The breakfast menu looks good so I would like to drop in for breakfast one day. I will definitely be back for the bakery items.

Yelp
They renovated recently, so this place looks absolutely gorgeous on the inside Parking can be tough, but it is in a strip mall that has parking if you don't mind walking. Strictly for bakery only. Gluttony's dream. Everything is tasty, but their cakes are a bit dense. Take a number and you're served!

Yelp
I was really disappointed with this place. I ordered it a meatloaf and sadly it was cold. This is the third time I come in, brought my family to have a good meal, sadly it didn't work out. The cocktail drink was the only good thing I ordered.

Yelp
met one of my girlfriends here for sunday brunch around noon there was still about a 45m wait, which wasnt an issue bc we had so much to catch up on! first impressions. BUSY. this place has so much to take in. theres a bakery, a cafe and a restaurant! yes yes, went straight to the display cases of sweets i picked up a few cookies and a chocolate cake and a danish. all DELICIOUS walked over to the cafe. everything smelled so goood! and just like that, our table was ready. we were sat in a booth, right by the bar. very cozy decor service was amazing. food was so bomb i was going back and forth btw breakfast and lunch but ended up ordering the crispy chicken sandwich...and ill say... one of the BEST chicken sandwiches! the coating on the chicken delivers such a crunch! ughhh drooling!! their ranch is also bomb! def will be back this place is dog friendly, huge seating in their patio seems like all the local frequent here! parking: huge lot but this place gets packed so may have to be patient and circle around a few times or there is street parking

Yelp
It's the first time for me to visit this legendary bakery and deli. As soon as I walked in, I immediately felt the bright and openness ambient which is classy but stuffy. The staffs were all prompt and attentive, courteous but not too formal. There were 6 of us with different breakfast selections, everything was nicely presented, and everyone enjoyed our food. I had the corn beef hash with eggs and hash browns, and it was one of the best I have had. Plenty of parking spaces and restroom was clean. Overall, it was an excellent dining experience.

Yelp
A group of us all decided to try out Katella Bakery because the menu looks amazing! No reservations so we waited quite a while which was understandable since it was a weekend and a large group. We finally get seated and get seating in this cute outdoor covered patio are where we pretty much had it to ourselves most of the lunch. The food was excellent and delicious! Now the reason for the two stars is solely on the poor service we received from our waiter. He was clearly having a bad day from the start, like before our drinks were all brought out we knew he was not happy to be there. We get our food except one person. Her sandwich took forever to come out. Someone forgot about it and the waiter offered her a soup which she did not want. She asked if she could get a dessert, he replied anything to make this right. Her sandwich comes out when we're all done eating and packing our leftovers. Manager comes out and says the sandwich is taken care of and blames the service on it being a holiday weekend. The waiter comes back with the check and we reminded him about our friend's dessert he said she'd get for their mistake. He doesn't acknowledge anyone and walks out. He comes back a few minutes later with a chocolate cake and leaves. Never asked what kind of dessert she wanted or if she wanted to eat it there or have it packed to go. Everyone has bad days, we all recognized that but when you're a waiter working off tips and service, it's time to step up your game and put your smile on. Not sure if any of us will return, but again the food was excellent! Service needs a lot of improvement or some retraining.

Yelp
Wow, what a transformation this restaurant went through! It's gorgeous! Nicely done with one exception which I'll get to after the good stuff. The ambiance with high ceilings, openness, positive vibe happening. Very much on the same category of what feels like a Porto's Bakery in a sense. Pastries, breads, cakes galore! Beautifully displayed and expanded! There's pre-packaged goods if you don't want to take a number and wait for service. I think the Porto's line moves faster than the number system they have going at KD. Take out is easy, a separate counter, a cafe bar and a sit down bar area is available. The place is huge with indoor and outdoor seating areas. Menu has changed with the renovation with a cut down in the menu options, which I appreciated. Their former menu was excessive and this was much better to manage to consider and review selections. Hubbie wanted their "Deli Meat Omelette" they no longer have on the menu but they accommodated him without a problem. The French Dip was beef brisket, cooked to tender perfection, super flavorful. The French Roll was soft and yummy excellent. Au Jus was delicious enough to dunk and drink! Onion rings were wonderful, crunchy and ranch dressing or bbq sauce offered. Service on a holiday weekend (Labor Day) was a bit on slow side. Waited about 40 minutes for our food, drinks were served promptly. Waitress was attentive, apologetic and appreciative of our patience for our order. We weren't in a hurry and it didn't really bother us . However the table next to us were quite irritated by the service and didn't feel the restaurant was good enough; "Not Jewish enough. Canter's is so much better!" In his own words, not mine. For us, it is great for our convenience and palette; having experienced Canter's in LA, Carnegie Deli, Katz's and Sadelle's in NYC. Ok, The Peach Pie, I had heard from a friend, an out of-towner advised me, " Must go and try it!" It's simply beautiful. Love the almond crust surrounding the fresh peaches, If you like peach pie, peach cobbler, peaches, get going! I was told by waitress, "this is our last week and then it's gone till next Summer!" It's divine. The one less star - The ladies bathroom. 3 stalls. Really?! Big fail on this. Such a big restaurant and only have 3 stalls is not adequate for women. There does appear to be a family or all gender restroom and a men's restroom, maybe check out the all gender bathroom if the women's is a wait. One less star for this oversight. Women wait too long in restrooms and the sensor toilets are not sensing sometimes which is problematic. Poor ventilation in ladies bathrooms too. Couldn't wait to get out of there. Overall, we will return to Katella Deli. Picked up some Chicken Noodle Soup for a sick relative to go and they loved it! Check it out!

Yelp
Came here after yoga it was around 10am and this place was packed. They remodeled it according to my friend who's been there before. We decided to seat at the bar since getting a table was going to be a 30 minute wait. We thought we would get our food right away given how many staff were working that morning. We got our drinks in quickly and they were so good. Our food took another 45 minutes and my friend had to ask twice. Once we got it, food was mediocre nothing spectacular like I'd been hoping for. Our waitress was friendly but she disappeared for a bit. The bar tender was very helpful and kept asking if we needed anything else. It just seemed like a busy day but still service should have been better and it shouldn't have taken 45 minutes for our food to arrive. Not sure I'd go back. Parking is big but it gets packed fast as well.

Yelp
SHE AIN'T WHAT SHE USED TO BE !!!!! I have been going here since the early 80's. This place used to be one of the best restaurants in the state of California. This place has gone down the toilet. Service is horrible and food is even worse. Do yourself a favor and don't waste you time or money.

Yelp
I've come to Katella bakery for breakfast, their bakery items and their coffee bar, all excellent experiences!! The food is absolutely amazing no matter if it's lunch or breakfast. It's all made to order. I highly suggest coming for breakfast. You'll see the staff preparing their lunch menu in the morning with flat breaded and sandwiches at the lunch bar. The bakery comes with an assortment of fresh, daily baked breads and treats. The sourdough, sweet bread, and cakes are all must try's. Lastly the coffee bar is a nice experience if you just want a quick drink and maybe a sweet treat to go. I suggest the Katella royal which is sweet and creamy, a notable mention is the Katella con Panna which is made with espresso and whipped cream! Overall a really great experience whether you're dining in, grabbing a quick coffee, or leading up on pastries! Pro Tip; this location is across a church so you'll see a surge of customers on a Sunday- be prepared!

Yelp
The ambiance is beautiful. The food, however, needs so much improvement to match that including basic quality and quantity. The breakfast steak and eggs were dry, overdone, and barely edible. The tuna melt was bland and small in portion for the price they charged. I was also flabbergasted when I told the manager that the food took over 30 minutes to arrive. She simply smiled and said okay as to be dismissive.

Yelp
I didn't want to say anything to my family because I didn't want to ruin our time together but I did tell my brother my complaints: we've been coming here for 20 years after church, during the week for dinner, for breakfast and yes, the place has been nicely remodeled, but today poor service was shown and poor quality of food. My salad was brown and wilting, and our dessert took forever to come out, and our waitress said it was being baked fresh, and when she brought it out, she said it was hot, but it wasn't hot. It was cold, and the bread was old. We have always loved coming here, and we will most likely continue to come, but hopefully the service and the food will improve.

Yelp
Monique is fantastic, Zack Ratman, grandson or son of the late and wonderful Shirley Ratman (z"l), take note. Monique was faaabulous when it came to service. & I'm a picky Jewish mom. Check my previous one star review. She's rectifying that fakaktah'd situation People, get the matzo ball soup. & also Go to the bakery. Everything is good

Yelp
One of my favorite deli/bakery to go to! I enjoyed sitting in the outside patio with a delicious hot chai tea latte and a few items from the bakery. I also had their breakfast burrito--yum!

Yelp
Katella Bakery Deli & Restaurant is a beautiful spot with plenty of parking, though it tends to get packed quickly. My sister suggested this place and so we decided to have a sister day here! When you walk in, you're greeted with a delightful aroma of baked goods and delicious food, setting the tone for your visit. The interior is well-designed, with sections for dining, a bakery, deli, and café, all adding to the charm of the place. Upon arrival, we were met by friendly staff who put our names down on the waitlist. The wait was about 30 minutes, which wasn't too bad considering how busy it was. Once seated, our waiter was incredibly sweet and attentive throughout the meal, which definitely made the experience more enjoyable. I ordered the Monte Cristo with jelly and fries, while my sister opted for the same dish with fruits. Unfortunately, the Monte Cristo was a bit dry and lacked the flavor I was hoping for. It wasn't bad, but it didn't quite hit the mark for me. My sister also agreed with me. If I were to return, I'd be interested in trying the chicken pot pie, it looked really good as I saw another customer eating it! To finish the meal, we shared a slice of strawberry cake. It was okay--nothing spectacular, just a standard slice of cake. Overall, Katella Bakery Deli & Restaurant is a beautiful place with a welcoming atmosphere, but the food was just okay for my first visit. I might give it another try in the future to explore other menu items.
