The concept for Katsu Midori Sushi per its brochure is fresh and high quality at reasonable prices with excellent service in a comfortable and casual dining setting.
I believe they hit all those points during my recent dining experience. It's probably important to keep that in mind because expectations might be high as this place is located in the 4-star Prince Waikiki hotel. Self-parking in the garage is $5 for 2.5 hours, and $10 for valet.
This place is to the right from the main lobby entrance. Look for the sign on the wall. Dinner starts at 5pm, and that's when they also start seating people. You are limited to 90 minutes for your meal, which starts right at 5pm (not when you sit down). The inside is somewhat small. There's the bar seating area with individual tables for larger parties (4+) across, and a dining area in a separate room. We sat in the separate dining area, and you don't feel the atmosphere or the vibe of the place. You see wall, ceiling, and window curtain. Feels generic and basic. A nice touch is using a tablet to place your order, but you can only order a total of exactly TEN items at a time, so ordering ala carte items such as single nigiris, hand rolls, drinks, and etc., you will to order multiple times... Didn't know that at first...and I ordered plenty of items on the first go. Frustrating when you spend a good amount of precious time deciding and choosing only to delete most of it, and then needing to redo it again.
One of the things I wanted to try was the Katsu Sea Eel Ippon, but it ended up in disappointment. I was expecting it to be warm since the description says "slow COOKED", but it turned out to be cold, and also noted "plenty of sauce", which was less than "plenty". Due to the coldness, the meat was more firm than soft and tender, and mostly tasteless. It really needed the sauce. It needed PLENTY of sauce. Pass. There was a block of rice underneath, but it's really for show.
The Arajiru (Miso Soup made with Fish Stock) was decent. You get a nice sized bowl filled with fish bones. The soup was simple and clean. It had a strong fish flavor than Miso, but still light.
The Seared Salmon with Miso was okay. The fire might've been too low or too far away or too fast, so the sear was subpar with minimal char. The salmon was fresh and good. Miso paste was all right.
The Assorted Tempura was all right - consisted of shrimp, shiitake mushroom, shiso, bell pepper, squash, pumpkin, avocado. All fried and battered okay. Tempura sauce was good.
Ordering sets may be what Katsu Midori wants you to do with the 10 items ordering limit, but this might be the best deal. It can be sharable, but almost all the items are just 1 each. We went with the Ozeki set - consisted of Negitoro Roll (6), Ikura, Uni, Hotate, Salmon, Hamachi, Medium Fatty Maguro (2), Unagi, Amaebi, Tamago, and Kazunoko. I appreciated the more authentic style with thicker and long slices of fish and seafood on the nigiri. Everything was fresh enough, but nothing really stood out as in terms of quality and clean taste. My biggest issue was the rice. Seasoned okay, but it was loose and falls apart easily when picked up with your chopstick, so that sort of killed the experience. The advertised Maguro from Japanese was quite so-so.
Not feeling satisfied I added on the Snow Crab, Rock Cod from Shinjuku, and Special Sea Urchin. Snow crab was okay. Not sweet, not much taste, plus the loose rice. Rock Cod was decent. Nice firm flesh with a scorched skin. This had a nice char and smokiness. Special sea urchin was from Hokkaido, which I immediately knew. I don't think I can be satisfied with any other Uni from now on.
Overall, I can't say it was bad or good, it was just a very basic meal. This was for my anniversary too, which was noted in my OpenTable reservation, but no one said a word. I was expecting more given the location, the reviews, and the photos. The fish and seafood were fresh and sliced nicely, but the loose rice, soft seaweed, and overall quality of fish was just a-ok. Not sure why that is. Everything was just lacking that clean, sweet, fresh, briny taste. Someone said this place was like a fancy Genki sans the conveyor belt, which might be spot on. Also, not a fan of limiting to 10 items per order, and time starts at your reservation time, and not when you first sit, or when you start to browse the tablet. The service was good. Food came out relatively quick. Don't think I'll come back any time soon.
