I had the best time here. It is a hole in the wall and I almost missed the entrance because it looked like it was closed, but if Google maps says you're in front of the restaurant, you're in the correct place. They are also reservation only. I had the black cod and a matcha beer (never had a matcha beer before, but it was really good!). Definitely want to come back to try their sushi.

This is one of the most exceptional restaurants I have ever been to in my life. The atmosphere is like no other, and the pride they take in their work is like no other. The food, is incredibly fresh, and the presentation is always perfect. Every time I come here it tastes better. Highly recommended.

this place is definitely worth a visit and then some! I had been eyeing this place for a while, but never had them opportunity because COVID-19 got real, but luckily they opened soon after NYC started allowing dine-in at the end of last month, just in time for the first year anniversary for the wife and I! this place is the real deal when it comes to fresh authentic Japanese cuisine! the sashimi was so fresh that it melted in the mouth... the owner was kind and accommodating, as well as extra cautious during these troubled times. I'm not sure you can find a better Japanese sushi place in Forest Hills or Queens for that matter!

Reservations only, don't bother walking in without one. The reason being is the experience of the meal not just the dining in part. BTW, no take out either. It's not allowed nor offered, if you must eat, then dine in is the only option. This is not meant to be snooty in any way. The pace of the meal and the attention they provide to each diner is part of the whole culture. It felt like I was eating in a friend's home. Polite and friendly, yet still relaxing and warm. The food just added to the whole experience.

I really like this place. This restaurant takes a very unique spin on Japanese food. The restaurant has a very authentic Japanese feel to it. I would definitely recommend going here for a nice meal.

All the food was above average. My wife is Japanese and very critical of Japanese food in the states. Service was on par as well. We will be returning to try the other stuff.

My wife introduced me to katsuno a few years back and we still keep it for special occasions. This time around we both got the black miso soup which was heavenly, and we shared the larger shashimi platter. The fish was great, my wife wasn't a fan of the Toro, which just meant more for me. We usually order some sort of sushi or sashimi but were interested in other newer looking menu items that we are excited to try on our next visit. Adding a picture of the exterior as it is kind of easy to walk past but definitely worth it once in.

Went in with high expectations and was not disappointed. The food was excellent. Service was super friendly. Will definitely return.

It's real Japanese Food in Forest hill. The place is very Japanese style, if you don't look carefully, you will miss it! I like it! The food is really good! We had sashimi and Nigiri Sushi and Udon and other delicious food. They didn't have toro today. But all other fish I and food are very fresh and tasty. The service is great, we didn't know that they place doesnt allow drink from outside. So we keep our own liquor and took it home. But I explored a new Beer, it's called Matcha IPA. Very unique! 8.5% proof, give a try. Over all, we will back for sure, it's a Japanese home style dinner. We all loved it.

My favorite ramen soup! Also the lady that helps with the orders is the sweetest person ever! From all the differrnt japanesse places i tried this place is most authentic and quality is just amazing!

Best Japanese restaurant in Queens, every single dish is outstanding, need in advance reservation

I saw all the rave reviews here, and was especially drawn by the rave reviews of folks I personally know and trust with restaurant recommendations, so to say I was disappointed by this restaurant is an understatement. Came here twice, one time I thought it was a fluke since I wasn't sure if it was what I ordered that caused me feel like this place under performed, but I came back a second time and gave this place a second shot, and was equally if not more disappointed. The quick and dirty of this restaurant? Exorbitant prices, average to low quality items, small portions. Nothing I ate here was spectacular or above average in anyway and the kicker here? The sushi was really mediocre / low quality..... Trust me I really wanted to like this place, but just couldn't bring myself to doing it.....

My family and I made a reservation for 7pm on a Saturday. Its storefront gate was down, so it looked like the place was closed but luckily we spotted some lights inside. Inside is very comfy and warm and it was almost a fullhouse. As far as we were aware, there was only one waitress and she was very nice. Our food showed up roughly an hour later. Tempura - We ordered both the appetizer and the assortment, and both were delicious. Not soggy or overly oily, had the perfect crisp. Both contained a combo of seafood and vegetables. Both came with dipping sauce, but the assortment came with white rice. Chirashi - I only sampled a little bit from my parents, but it tasted fresh and they really seemed to enjoy it. They mentioned preferring a little bit more rice, but overall, a nice dish based on their reactions. Wakame soba - This was GREAT. It comes with a shaker of togarashi (chili pepper assortment) so you can adjust the spice level. The portions were generous and while I was stuffed by the end of it, the meal itself was quite light. The broth, 11/10, especially with some togarashi. Not overly salty at all, simple and refreshing! For me personally, it could've used a little more wakame, just because I love that seaweed flavor and otherwise the main flavors you get are from the broth, but it was still very good and perfect during the winter. Prices wise, it's more on the pricey side. I'd say the soba was worth it ($18) for its flavor and portion size and assuming the chirashi ($39) for the sashimi quality, but am on the fence on the tempura assortment ($30). I'm definitely looking forward for my next visit!

Been here three times over the course of a few years and I leave underwhelmed and felt overcharged every time. The most recent visit was especially disappointing because, on top of the already over priced food, they now add a 3.7% charge to use credit cards. 3.7% is by far the highest I have encountered and definitely higher than what they actually pay in merchant fees, which means it's a source of profit for them. Atmosphere: 2 - Restaurant is clean and tidy but very dated and small. Not much "atmosphere" at all. Food: 3.5 - Food quality and preparation is good, better than the typical neighborhood "Japanese" or sushi place. Prices: 1 - Most items, not all, are 25% to 33% over priced relative to both quality and portion size. Service: 3 - Average. The lady is nice but not the most attentive. Never asked if I wanted another beer and my water glass was empty half the time. Overall: 2 - Slightly better than average food at high prices and unreasonable 3.7% credit card usage fee.

Authentic Japanese food for Japanese people and those who know California rolls are American food and not from Japan. This restaurant is run by a Japanese family. It is authentic as evidenced by the many Japanese people eating there. The food is very good and prepared after you order and as such takes time. This is not your typical American Japanese restaurant. If you want authentic Japanese food, this is you spot in Queens.

Quaint sushi spot in the Forest Hills neighborhood, open for 3-4 hours in the evening hours. The staff is friendly and the fish is fresh. It's mid-priced so it's not super cheap but not overly expensive either. Its recommended that you make a reservation; we ate right when it opened and were so surprised to see how busy the restaurant got within 15-minutes of opening.

Hands down the best Japanese food in Forest Hills. It's definitely expensive, but it's worth it for the quality of fish. We only come here once a year but every time we do it's a great meal. The sushi is so fresh and the noodles taste delicious. I like how they aren't flashy about their business. The restaurant itself is nice but very quiet. When you speak the whole place can hear your conversation. Service is okay. Nothing special, but not bad either. Love this place.

My wife, I, and another couple visited for an evening of sushi. We ordered Spanish Mackerel Tataki, Chilled Steamed Octopus, both kinds of miso soup, Kara age (fried chicken), avocado/eel and ikura rolls, a sashimi plate, and a sushi plate. All of it was very good, much better than your "average" sushi restaurant. The fish was very fresh and succulent. The salmon was not farmed. The karaage was delicate. Prices are also higher than average; and portions are not American sized. For example, the tuna roll was plain and only was six "small" pieces. Probably what you would find in a traditional bar in Japan. But you should go if 1) you don't mind spending a little more, and 2) you really want excellent sushi.

I recommend Katsuno as a high quality low key place. If you want lots of fancifully titled rolls or flashiness, this is not the restaurant for you. The quality of the food meets expectations. Elsewhere in Forest Hills I have been disappointed by soggy tamago that had obviously been frozen and defrosted, as well as bland fish that was old and flavorless. What has shocked me, however, is that those venues have stayed in business and even appear moderately popular. I had just about given up on sushi in the borough, and I had remarked on that to my wife and others. Katsuno restored my hope. They know their stuff. I have qualms about endorsing it, as happens on Yelp, because of the ethnicity of the proprietors (I have an essay in the works on this subject; it is beyond the scope of Yelp; if you're curious I have an academic paper on chirashi you could find on the internet by poking around; it's a precursor to a piece -- also see the movie East Side Sushi for a good rejoinder). I also would not endorse it on the basis of the ethnicity of the diners. I am vouching for it on what I believe is a legitimate basis: the quality of the cuisine. This is good food at a reasonable price for what you get. I also would say the casual setting suits me. It is like stepping into somebody's home. It's moody and charming in its way. The other patrons I saw included a middle aged Caucasian couple who I imagined to be having an affair or otherwise somehow exciting; I'm not sure what would make me believe that, but they seemed much more into one another and the occasion than in my experience is the case for a married couple dining out at a regular spot (you ever play a game of telling the story of strangers whom you see; that's part of the joy of people wacthing); and a family with a child, maybe Latino or Afro-Latino, one member of which didn't quite understand what nigiri was, but the other member of which was expert, ordering the chirashi (nobody selects that who doesn't know what they are doing). This is to say the place was welcoming and not pretentious. They also must have been doing some takeout business. The single server was running around quite a bit relative to the total of six diners in the place. When I went, they were reservations required. The waitress said they were not busy though, so she sat me. I was grateful. If I lived nearby, I'd eat at Katsuno often. I live on the other side of Flushing Meadows, so it's more of a hike. But my despair about good sushi in Queens has been alleviated.

Honestly one of the best meals I've had in FH. It's not cheap but it's not super expensive either and the quality of the food is worth it. The portions are standard Japanese portions and I definitely feel full after eating there but I don't have leftovers like I usually do with American restaurants. Service was amazing as well, I wanted to try the Inawina Umeshiso Hiyagake but they had no udon so she offered to do the dish with the Japanese vermicelli instead for me! So kind. My favorite dishes: Agedashi Tofu Salmon Carpaccio Miso Black Cod Green tea and black sesame ice creams

Dirty and dingy place, i won't go again. whole restaurant very old from inside out, the restroom disgusting. Food ok but prices are way too high. I got bug bites from there.

Itadakimasu (Japanese for Thank You for the food, I humbly receive ). This exclusive 'Reservations only' Japanese restaurant looks and feels like a modified home. Classic eats on the menu makes it hard to choose what to eat...I wanted to try it all. The food, the service, the relaxed pace in which everything was served made the night out much more enjoyable. The food was all visually appealing and the portion sizes were perfect for sharing. While I did try to order two items that I've never seen before/or that were rare, sadly they were out of them... It was a conch like seafood item and toro (tuna belly). The waitress suggested sea bream instead but I had already ordered a fish so I passed. I never felt rushed during our meal and our server gave us ample time to enjoy our dishes. She even came by to refill our drinks and then at some point when our mains came out, she just let us be. Both the sushi chef and the server headed to the back so that we could just sit and enjoy our meal. My friend and I decided to order a few things to share and we tried to touch upon each category of food. His suggestion from the appetizers section was the Chef's choice (Today's Zensai) appetizer. Much to our delight, the three items that came out were excellent. It was three bowls of deliciousness. - first bowl: Spanish Mackerel (sashimi style) mixed with onions, scallions, and a ponzu type vinaigrette dressing. - second bowl: watercress (room temperature/slightly cooler), topped with bonito flakes. Simple/clean eating. Really liked it. - third bowl: Japanese pumpkin chunks - sweet and semi firm texture. It was not powder-y ... just smooth and flavorful chunks. Second plate we shared: Magritte duck. Served Medium - tender slices cut like a steak; juicy breast meat. It was perfect. Right temperature and color. A dab of spicy green pepper on top packed heat but balanced well with the duck. No sauce needed here. Other goodies: yellowtail roll, fresh Sea scallop sashimi (a la carte) and a snow crab avocado roll. A salad I've never seen before, salmon and Sea Urchin served with endives and mixed greens. The dressing was slightly too vinegary but still great overall. Dessert, MUST get: Green Tea Tiramisu with Black Sesame ice cream and a black Sesame caramel base. Lip smacking good. BTW, during the dinner rush, I was surprised that customers were turned away with no reservations so they are strict with that policy. Gochisosama (Thank you for the meal).

When I checked in recently Yelp informed me that it was my first. Knowing I've been here before I realized it was prior to my active Yelp days - so over a decade ago. Back when I first tried it in 2009/10 I didn't fully appreciate it. Now on my revisit, with the benefit of much more dining experience, I realize Katsuno is special and amazing - perhaps becoming my favorite Japanese spot in Queens. Make a reservation for this calm, small 24 seat space. Katsuno states they are "authentic Japanese" since I am not Japanese and never been to Japan I will take them at their word. The decor fits what I would expect. The service is calm, friendly, polite and efficient - everything I want. Sushi is prominent on the menu, but the better approach is tapas style - order a variety of dishes to share. A great way to start is with Today's Zensai, a chef's choice of three different starters. We were given Stewed Cold Pumpkin, Watercress Ohitashi and Spanish Mackerel Tataki. When you add the cost for each dish it is $28, but leaving it to the chef you get more variety and at a better cost at currently $18 - a no brainer deal! Also I believe Chef Seo overheard my desire to try the Spanish mackerel so I was tremendously happy when it was offered to us. Each was excellent with the pumpkin (or sweet potato) having perfect texture and flavor - so satisfying. The ohitashi was well made and deceptively simple. The Spanish Mackerel was fantastic - most people don't like this fish because of the strong flavor. It is generally marinated to balance that and this is the best version I've had anywhere. I found the fish flavor shines while being complimented by the treatment and the scallion, red onion, myoga (ginger) and yuzu ponzu sauce. We also ordered the octopus and cucumber vinaigrette which was stunningly beautiful in the presentation. Cucumber was excellent and octopus tender with a delicious vinaigrette. I also ordered the nigiri sushi platter - when trying a place that serves sushi for the 1st time (or revisiting in this case) I like to get this assortment. I was happy to find pointed out that 3 of the pieces were flown in from Japan - fluke, clam and sea bream. The fish were all quality the pieces well made and seasoned nicely. My friend tried a piece and thought the rice wasn't the right texture, but I had no complaint. I also tried the Inaniwa Hiyagake found the cold broth delicious and udon noodles very good. The matcha tiramisu with black sesame ice cream and paste was a real treat! That tiramisu had perfect matcha flavor and texture to the cream. Black sesame flavor in both so good and I was afraid it could overpower the delicate matcha flavor, but not here since both were very prominent. GET THIS DESSERT and be happy! I plan on being back soon with so many dishes i want to try - Magritte duck, Salmon & sea urchin salad, tamagoyaki, chawanmushi, their assortment of cooked dishes and more of that delicious seafood. Give it to me all! Oh I didn't drink but check out their Matcha and Yuzu flavored beers and ales on the menu. Can't wait to explore more!

Delicious and better quality fish than the previous places I've been . We had the karage, agedashi tofu, blackened cod, sashimi dinner. The dessert ... green tea cake with blackened honey .... Too much deliciousness. Not inexpensive and comparable in price to Manhattan. However, Katshno is actually better in taste and quality. Wish I lived closer to Forest Hills.

My favorite Japanese sushi spot. Been coming here a handful of times but this is the first time since covid started.love their sashimi dinner and Chirashi . They are always fresh and high quality .Would definitely go back soon for more !

What a let-down. We saw good reviews online and know that the place is run by Japanese people, and thought we'd like to try. We tried at least 3 times to book without avail, so when we got the reservation in we were excited to finally be able to try the place. We ordered both cooked food and raw food, 3 items each. The cooked food was pretty decent quality, but the portions are ridiculously small for $20+ mains. For example, the pork belly dish features 2 pieces of pork belly, 2 pieces of mochi, and 2 pieces of broccoli (an odd one!). The raw items were the real let-down. The sashimi was not fresh (you can tell without even eating, just by the color and sheen), and the fish variety was limited. We were told that some of the fish is from Japan. You know what, it doesn't matter if the fish is from outer space if it's not fresh. We're really disappointed as we expected so much more for a (once) Michelin-recommended and supposedly authentic Japanese restaurant.

Lovely owner operated local restaurant. The food is always fresh and well flavored. We especially enjoy the black cod and the chicken katsu. The tamago is also excellent. A nice quiet neighborhood find.

I dined on Friday night. I made a reservation but I don't think it'll be necessary as there were only 2 tables when we got there at 7:45pm and it was 2-3 tables throughout the night. We left around 9:30pm. Tofu with uni(sea urchin) is to die for!! Soooooo gooooood. Fish were fresh. Overall very good. I just wish service was bit faster.. I think they only have one person in the kitchen and I saw only one sushi chef so it took forever to get all our orders. I will go back if I'm not that hungry.

I've had this place bookmarked for so long, but every time I go onto OpenTable to make a reservation (as recommended on their website), none of the times are available. Finally, I decided to call the restaurant (an actual phone call, how shocking) and was happy to find that I was able to get a reservation for that same night. When we got to the restaurant, we saw that there were several empty seats that remained empty while we were there, so maybe they reserve some seats for walk in customers? The moral is, just call them for reservations instead of relying on OpenTable. For appetizers, we ordered the agedashi and karaage which are pretty much my go-to appetizers at any Japanese restaurant (at least, the first time I go there). The karaage was perfectly fine, but a bit lacking in seasoning. I think it needs some kinda dipping sauce or something. I really liked the agedashi; the batter was so good!! And didn't overpower the tofu. We asked for a recommendation of sake and was recommended the OZE (300ml). I'd order it again; it was very dry and light, easy to drink. A got the pork udon which he liked fine, but noted was nothing special. I'm super biased when it comes to udon because my mom makes a mean udon, but I agreed with his assessment when I took a bite. However, my order (inaniwa umeshiso hiyagake) was AMAZING! [5 stars for this dish alone!] It was my first time having inaniwa udon and it definitely won't be my last. It's a simple cold noodle dish with just some plum and perilla as the topping but so flavorful and full of umami. It's only been 2 days since we went and I'm already craving it again. Unfortunately they're closed Monday and Tuesday though, so I'm impatiently waiting for the end of the week to come again! Next time, I will try something from the raw bar, but definitely the inaniwa again (and again and again!).

Finally got to try Katsuno and it didn't disappoint! For takeout I ordered the Chirashi, Spanish mackerel tataki, and agedashi tofu. Everything was delicious and fresh. Their chirashi has a variety of different fish over seasoned rice. For the tofu, you get 4 large pieces of fried tofu with shaved bonito in a sweet soy sauce broth. I think my favorite was the mackerel tataki, which was a pleasant surprise. Sometimes mackerel can be fishy, but it was perfectly balanced with the scallions, seaweed and red onions. The Yuzu vinaigrette gave it the nice acidic touch. I ordered ahead of time and everything was packed nicely and prepared for my pickup time. Definitely can't wait to try the rest of the menu!

Don't want to leave a review because want to keep this place a secret since it's already so hard to get a reservation!!!! But honestly this is the best Japanese food in all of Forest Hills and probably for a large stretch beyond in Queens. Mom and Pop shop, very professional and high quality concepts and execution. Absolutely fresh and delicious. Their hotate literally blew my mind. I was not expecting it to taste better than a restaurant like let's say, Sushi Yasuda, but it was levels above. Thank you so much for the delicious food!!!! They have gluten free soy sauce too and are kind and understanding of my dietary restrictions!!

Tea and beans are meant to be spilled. The same goes for secrets. Sort of. Expectations wise. Not milk tho. But I digress. I personally stumbled into this place thinking I could buy a duck udon to go for my mother since the weather was getting cold. Upon finally finding the relatively unmarked door (security grate over the window is left down), I was immediately told by the maitre d/server/owner?, nah we don't do take out or to go. So mission failed. Then I remembered the website said reservations only. So I walked back in the door again and thought ah why not see why this udon nazi place doesn't do take out or to go. Made a res for the next evening. And man was I glad I did. This place is versatile. It's not just udon. I had the beef tataki app. Perfectly cooked thin slices of steak with a vinegrette salad on top. Had the tuna tartare app. Balanced and light and delicious. Also went with a chicken karaage. So juicy and crisp. But wait... Before I take a selfie... Where's the sauce? I only see a small wedge of lemon. That's right. No spicy mayo type orange sauce usu standard with this bird. That's how good it is. Doesn't need sauce. Seasoned just right either with salt and or from the marinade/brine. For mains we went with duck and pork udons. Simple, but very good. Udon noodles had a nice bouncy mouthfeel. Soup was light but flavorful. Protein was thinly sliced and cooked to perfection (pink for the duck, fully cooked for the pork). For desert we had the home made shiso flan. Good flan but not sure I really tasted much shiso. But it's flan so can't be too aggressive with it I suppose. All in all ordered so much, ate so much and didnt spend very much. Compared to Manhattan that is. Based on experience,food of this quality would easily be 40% mor expensive and not be 40% better tasting in the city. If I were to compare the udon, I'd first think of raku, whose udon was more rich. Noodles were def hand kneaded and pulled. Noodles here... Hard to tell. But they were still great and didn't get soggy. The broth at raku is also much heavier and saltier. Hard to say which is better. To each their own one may suppose. Bottom line, I will be back here. Too many things still to try on the menu. Cooked and raw, the menu has it all and I am confident to say will likely not disappoint. I will make that blind bet all day. Outside on the window, all the Michelin recommended stickers might say something my non stop rambling hasn't. But as for all things worth experiencing, do try for urself. So there is a notable community of Japanese who live in forest hills, here for work I assune. But not many Japanese restaurants I would care to go to. Who knows. You might add one to ur list even if ure not from queens. If not, I'll gladly take ur reservation. Much appreciated.

I wouldn't say it's the best place but it's definitely a solid place and the best in the area. I'd say the price for udon is a bit high since my duck udon bowl was $19 and really only came with green onion and a small amount of green veggies. The noodles aren't homemade and super fresh (for reference, my favorite udon spot is Raku) but they're still a very good texture, doesn't taste like they were frozen. The broth was the highlight of my duck udon bowl, lots of flavor without being too salty. Their sushi was well worth the price. I ordered pieces of uni and sea scallops, two pieces I only order if I have faith it'll be fresh- they were! I'm by far an uni lover, I've only come to enjoy it this year but it was delicious, especially for the price ($4.5/piece, cant beat that). Lastly, the salmon carpaccio was perfect- definitely recommend. Forest hills crew, keep this place alive. People from afar, you'd probably just want to stay afar for your own sake and for the sake of not crowding up our forest hills spots!

I went with my husband for dinner on a Friday evening. It's a small space, but good service. Very friendly and the sushi was very fresh which was most important to us. I recommend it as a neighborhood sushi spot if you're not looking to venture out into the city. The price wasn't too bad either.

Sorry, we wanted to like this place very much. Here's the deal: the food is good (no problem with quality) but not spectacular. The problem lies in the portion and price. The prices are ridiculously high and the portions are tiny. After the $70 dinner, I grabbed a slice of pizza up the street. The slice was great.

This is good quality food, excellent cooked foods. The raw's freshness on par with all those on the top lists of NYC, only lacking variety. Decent portions, not Manhattan prices.Topping my list of fav restaurants. Only lacks in service, it wasn't bad but could be friendlier and much more attentive but still better than a number of other hyped highly rated places. Every dish we ordered is a repeat. Going back for the rest of the menu.

I enjoyed this Japanese owned Sushi and Japanese restaurant. Good thing is s wide variety of foods we can choose. Below is a review in Japanese for Japanese tourists. 【ここは京都か神楽坂か？ ニューヨークQueensの寿司店】 Katsuno @ 米国ニューヨークエリア@ 寿司、日本料理 2016-08-13 お勧め度 米国北東部の旅の締めくくりのディナーは、やはり日本食にしました。 米国ニューヨークのマンハッタンとJFK空港の中間、Queens の Metropolitan Avenue にある寿司、日本食のお店。 2010-2014年毎年のミシュラン選定プレートが貼ってあります。 まるで京都か神楽坂ののお店のように、黒い板壁に小さな店名のぼんぼり、のれんが下がっているので営業中だとやっとわかります。このセッティングはアメリカでは初めて見ました。 店内はテーブルが９つ、赤いテーブルクロスの上にガラスが載せてあり、全体に清潔でモダンなデザインのインテリアです。奥の寿司カウンターで日本人のご主人が握っておられますがカウンター席はありません。ホールスタッフは日本人女性の2人。 稲庭うどんの他、うどん、そばの種類が豊富で、ざるそばもあり、さらにソーメンまであります。 おつまみも玉子豆腐、茶碗蒸し、玉子焼き、温泉玉子、ひじき、ヒラメ(fluke)のゆずポン酢、マグロぬた、など色々揃って居ます。 寿司は握りもロールも基本的なものだけで、決して多種とは言えませんが、バッテラまであるのは驚きました。 肉、魚料理も各種ありますが、定食の設定は無く、ライス、味噌汁は適宜頼む方式です。 オーダーは、 枝豆 5ドル 胡瓜とわかめの酢の物 7 マグロぬた 14 サーモン握り 3 うなぎ握り 4 冷掛けソーメン 11 ポークヒレカツ 18 ライス 2.5 枝豆がしょっぱいのでまず少々テンションダウン。酢の物はあっさり系でややパンチに欠けています。マグロのヌタは中とろと青ねぎ、美味しいけれどヌタは赤身の方が良いかも。 試しに握りを二個だけ頼んでみました。寿司は一向単位です。シャリが美味しく良いレベルです。 ヒレカツは小さな一口カツが4個、豚肉が柔らかく、揚げ具合も良いと思いました。 ライスは合格点。 ソーメンは、もう少し冷たいと嬉しいのですが、あっさり爽やかに頂け、蒸し暑い夏の夜にぴったりのフードでした。 JFK空港のホテルからは6kmほど、車で15分くらいですので、またお邪魔する機会もあろうかと思います。 駐車場が無く、パーキングチケットの路駐になりますので、若干苦労するかもしれません。 103-01 Metropolitan Ave, Forest Hills, NY 11375,U.S.A. +1-718-575-4033 17:00-.22:00

Delicious, fresh menu with exquisite service. Husband and wife team offer freshest of ingredients prepared to perfection. Highly recommend stewed pumpkin, agedashi tofu, tenzaru soba, chirashi, and berkshire pork belly. Truly a delight!

Katsuno is a hidden gem in a quiet part of forest hills away from the busy austin street section. It is so understated outside that if you are not purposely looking for it, you could walk right past it and not notice. The restaurant is small, quiet and clean. They serve very very authentic japanese style tapas, noodles and sushi (no crazy american style rolls here). We ordered the uni with silken tofu and I highly recommend it. While I have had better uni elsewhere, theirs very sweet and creamy and pairs so well with the tofu (unlike the extremely bitter uni at other sushi joints in queens). The octopus and cucumber vinegratte is very light and refreshing with the right amount of acidity. Their sushi is pretty fresh also and priced fairly. They have been around for a long time but I feel their business has gone down a bit, i came at 7 on friday night and the place was not crowded at all. While i enjoy it being so quiet and calm i do wish they have more business so they can survive. Katsuno is one of the best japanese restaurant in queens and very comparable to places in the city, I highly recommend you try this place out!

I have eaten here a few years back. My only complaint before was the pricing. However, the quality of the food served justified the pricing in my mind. The owner definitely doesn't cheap out on the food. But that is not the reason for the bad review. I recently went with my wife this week. The food was still good but the service had a lot to be desired. Upon entering the restaurant the food server coldly said reservations only. I was confused by this as I wasn't aware that this was ever done. We were never asked this before. What made it worse was that all tables but one were empty. The waiter than realized I was looking at all the empty tables and she said "only this time could I take you." She then walked away in a huff. This was the start to a bad meal. As we waited for our meal other diners came into to the restaurant and were offered a seat immediately. There was no mention of reservations only. The same waiter's demeanor changed from cold to warm and friendly when it came to the other tables. I was already becoming frustrated by the fact that the other diners weren't question if they had a reservation or not. My wife and I felt singled out. Why? I dare not think about the reasons why, less I get more upset and this post becomes politicized. We then decided to order more food. The same waiter seemed annoyed that we requested the menu. Again, I just don't understand what the problem was. We were ordering more, which meant a bigger bill and a bigger tip for her. When the time came to settle up I actually for once contemplated not tipping. The fact that I considered doing that really bothered me because I'm not the type to do something like that. That's how upset I was with the way we were treated. I then called the waiter over and politely asked her to clarify the need for a reservation. She had a hard time explaining it to me. I then pointed out that the diners that came while we were there did not have reservations, hinting that she did not question them. She was not able to give me any straight answers. Completely dissatisfied with what was happening I decided to take the high road and move on. Our dinner was already being ruined. I tipped her (which some would say I'm rewarding bad behavior). I will no longer ever considering going there. I will tell everyone I know not to eat there. There are plenty of Japanese restaurants in Queens let alone the rest of NY.

Uni . I had never tasted your delicacy . I was waiting to pop this culinary cherry by waiting to eat it somewhere atleast safe if not tasty . I had Been eyeing this place since it has raving reviews on Yelp . I finally made my way here for our date night last week . I needed a satisfied tummy before watching miss peregrines school of peculiar children . This place is hard to find as there is not a huge sign but the outside looks like you are back in ancient Japan which is a nice touch . You walk in and it's pretty small maybe 10 tables max . The hostess/ waitress asked first if we had a reservation . I am guessing this place gets packed and reservations are recommended . We didn't have a reservation but she sat us anyway. Alas Uni and I were meant to meet! The menu is simple . They have sushi rolls , sushi and sashimi . They also have cold soba and udon . I ordered the Uni tofu which is a cold appetizer and the cold soba with the tempura on the side . My husband got 4 rolls. The Uni had asparagus on it which luckily didn't kill me as I am allergic to it but my husband scarfed it down as soon as he saw it . My hero ! So finally I tried Uni and I had mixed feelings . It didn't taste too fishy but it had this weird consistency I can't explain . The tofu was less appetizing though . Overall it tasted " fresh" and not out of a can or salty. The cold soba was good but not to die for. The waitress forgot we had tempura and brought it a little later after I asked for it . That wasn't special either . The rolls were standard and came with 6 pieces . Our whole bill was over $60 which is pricey I think . However I popped my Uni cherry and had cold soba which is a successful night . My husband says he would rather get 9 piece rolls from somewhere cheaper . Come here for authentic Japanese like soba or Uni which tasted fresh. The sushi was just ok . We should have ordered the sushi dinner which would have been 8 rolls for $30 .. next time !

The sōmen was everything! Get it. Egg appetizer, could have passed on. The sushi was delish. Spicy rolls were mayo-y, not a fan. Loved the saki. Love this date night spot for me and my future hubby!

Lovely little Japanese restaurant. There is no large signage in front, so it is very easy to walk pass. Also, they are reservation only since there are not that many seats. The daily chef's choice appetizer never disappoints.

I came here with my favorite foodie after Time Out New York reviewed it as one of the best sushi places in NY. It truly deserves the accolade however you must know a few things: 1. Reservations only (small restaurant) 2. Empty tables will not guarantee you a table 3. This is a casual but an upscale Japanese Sushi restaurant not your typical sushi rolls and gyoza apps(nothing wrong with that just not the place) We had the fried chicken appetizer and we shared the tuna avocado salad- beyond delicious. He had the 5 pc sashimi dinner and I had salmon sashimi meal with a bowl of rice (no brown rice). The meal was amazing and filling. We will be back but are still looking for a good neighborhood sushi place where the dragon roll, rainbow roll etc. are in abundance- this is NOT that place.

I have been eating here for six to seven years now. I go here every New Year's Eve and for my monthly sashimi quota. My partner and I often get the chef's choice sashimi for two which is really generous and fills us up if we get this alongside the chef's trio of appetizers and a miso soup each. The sashimi is Michelin star quality--like the essence of sweet and briny ocean umami goodness melting in your mouth. His stewed and chilled pumpkin is so deep in flavor and creamy. It tastes of pure pumpkin like he sous vides it for hours in a homemade dashi stock that is briny and tastes like the sea. Served cool, the flavor heightens like sun flares of pumpkin goodness. The chef does magic to his sashimi, especially the Spanish Mackerel, to cure them, so his sashimi melts like spun sugar of the sea in the mouth. The sashimi is as good as what you get at award winning Manhattan sushi places like Sushi Yasuda. The egg custards are silky, light and creamy---not a single bubble, which is a good measure of a good Japanese sushi chef. The miso soups are surreal and powerful, strong on dashi and dense miso. My favorite is the red miso soup. Homemade fresh soba is also another sign of this great Japanese neighborhood gem. The only thing I haven't tried is the grilled yellowtail collar--but I have seen fellow diners happily pick apart every morsel of flesh and collagen from this intimidating dish.

People use the word authentic alot so it has kinda lost the impact it normally would generate. This place is "the real deal" boom...... Ive been here a couple of times and it has always been very consistent with the quality of the dishes. They waitress has always been helpful. The poached egg is delicious but it is a little runny so be warned if you dont like your eggs a little raw it might be better to move on. The uni is clean and fresh. Besides those two i normally try different dishes every time.

8/13/22: Called and made a reservation for 7:20 P.M. Arrived on time, only to find, (to my amazement) . . . the location look totally CLOSED! City gates up over the windows/door! Looked pretty closed to me. Closed, as in OUT OF BUSINESS, closed. So, I call the number listed on Google, and there is NO ANSWER! Then, a few moments later, my cell phone rings from a name unknown to me. I answer it and the female voice on the other end identifies herself as "Katsuno". Explains she noticed that I called. I ask to confirm the street address, and the one I had was the correct address, so I say . . .I dropped by and you looked closed. She replies, "oh yes, we do look closed. There is no sign, but we are open. Come back, and I can open the door for you." WHAT....you'll "open the door for me". NOPE, no thanks, I don't think so! We were (then) fortunate enough, to find a parking spot near "D's", and had a most enjoyable meal - THERE ! As an OLD New Yorker, I have not, in all my years, come across a restaurant situation this WEIRD! In my opinion, this is a solid "NO GO"! You can take your chances, but you've been warned! GOOD LUCK.

Hands down the best sushi place in the neighborhood. Always fresh sushi and excellent customer service. Haven't been inside due to COVID yet but can't wait to return.

Artistic perfection in Japanese food. Stellar freshness, perfectly simple presentation, deep knowledge of sake, a menu where there are no wrong choices. I don't like tofu but their agedashi tofu is uncontrollably awesome, worthy of its own standalone restaurant. Duck udon will transport you to the emperor's favorite restaurant. Eel avocado hand roll is so good, I could eat nothing but that the rest of my life. It's as good as it gets. I don't care about price, service, decor... It's about the food. The food is better than five stars.

This is a hidden gem in Forest Hills! I've passed by this location many times, and never noticed it until I had bookmarked in Yelp, and wow was I glad that I finally went in. Everything we had was really good -- sashimi and other fish appetizers. But what really stood out to me was the Agedashi Tofu. I've probably had 1000s of versions of this dish, but what stood out here was the quality of the dash broth that went with the Agedashi Tofu. I'd personally come back just for this. While the prices here are higher than other places in Queens, this is Manhattan level quality!

Authentic, traditional Japanese cuisine. Chawanmushi! Different trio of zensai every time I've come! Berkshire pork belly is accompanied by MOCHI (nomnomnom)! Tenzaru is exquisitely presented! Yuka is a wonderful host, who always makes me feel like I belong. Her husband is the chef-owner. Together, they run a neighborhood gem that is worth the trip from another borough.

Amazing. I truly enjoyed this restaurant. It was a spur of the moment walk-in right as they opened for dinner last Saturday. The venue is small and intimate (in such a good way). It's dimly lite and the sophisticated music in the background really sets the tranquil Japanese scene. The art on the walls are each beautifully chosen and add to the restaurant quite well. One item (which still didn't defer me from giving them 5 stars) was the strong smell of gas. It was pretty powerful but since we did come in just as the restaurant literally opened I figured it was just the place warming up. We started with two appetizers, the chilled octopus and the asparagus and tomato salad. Sooo good and FRESH. The waitress was beyond accommodating and patient with our decisions. We also had the apple green tea- great choice. This was a little different from the norm and gave the tea a sweet taste. We shared three rolls: salmon, crab California roll and the eel roll. All were made in front with the sushi chef and wonderful. I honestly think that any item on their menu would be very good- we couldn't have gone wrong. Would come back and recommend this place to others.

An authentic Japanese sushi restaurant, The tuna and avocado salad is very good, I like the dressing. the fish is so fresh, well prepare, the Toro is excellent taste, the uni is so fresh and yummy, I will give it 5 star,

We came here the other day after walking by this place for months. I have to say this is the best sushi in Forest Hills and quite possibly the best sushi in Queens. Everything that we had was excellent, I especially recommend the Spanish Mackerel. The wait staff was polite and attentive. The ambiance was a bit austere, but it filled its purpose. My only qualm is the price. For two people (two appetizers and two entrees with a tea) it came out to about a $100 total (including tip). In short, I recommend this place, but bare in mind that you will be paying for what you get, and it is good food, so it is worth it.

Not sure why Im reading these bad reviews I've been coming to this restaurant for a long time! Ive always been treated well and fed well! We love katsuno! its the gem of our neighborhood! Food is fresh and delicious and the staff is amazing!!!!!

Katsuno This place is definitely hidden and will miss the entrance if not pay attention. I made a reservation at 6pm on Thursday and there's no one in the restaurant but after 1 1/2 hour, the restaurant is full. There are only 24 seating so i guess I made a good call. I ordered Ice oolong tea for drink, I don't think the ice is from a machine or ice cube tray. Food order as below: Today's zensei (3 chef choice appetizers)- delicious -watercress ohitashi is not over seasoned and the green is perfecto done, -fluke in yuzu ponzu sauce is a good starter to increase the appetite -stewed cold pumpkin is full with flavor but not mushy and the sweetness is like having desserts Uni egg tofu - delicious - so silky and flavorful Magritte Duck - full of flavor and not greasy at all. Clam miso soup- there are 8 pieces of clams in the soup and they are fresh so the soup is full of seafood flavor so it's worth more than $6.50 Fluke sashimi - fresh and flavorful See scallop sashimi - fresh and tasty Spanish mackerel sashimi - this is my fave, fresh and rich but not overwhelming. Tempura appetizer -1 of each of the following - shrimp, shiso, sweet potato, asparagus, egg plant and imitation crab Almond milk pudding (aka almond tofu) - at first I thought it will taste like something that I can get from Japanese super market but its not! The dessert definitely made in house and it actually has the tofu texture. The syrup has a hint of ginger which makes it more authentic. Overall I had an amazing experience in this restaurant. I will definitely go back to order other items from the menu which will be the 5th star given.

I am so glad that Katsuno exists! It is probably one of the only truly authentic Japanese restaurants in Queens, and it just so happens that their food is AMAZING. Looking at the other reviews for this restaurant, it seems that many come here with the wrong expectations. This is NOT a sushi restaurant, if that is what you are expecting. They do serve rolls, nigiri and sashimi but it is not the focal point of this establishment. Also, the prices here are higher than what you would find at any other Asian eatery in queens. However, this is due to the fact that they serve high quality, fresh food and put a great deal of attention and care into what they serve. On several visits, I have gotten the appetizer omakase, which came with an egg custard, pumpkin, and seaweed. All of these are excellent, and I especially love the custard which is really smooth, dense and flavorful. I normally do not like kara-age chicken because I find it to be bland and dry. I ordered it here, and am so happy that I did! It was crispy, extremely juice meat and my friends and I ended up ordering another. I also love the fluke yuzu carpaccio and the salmon carpaccio - these are my favorites here. I love raw fish, and the presentation and taste of these dishes are on another level! The restaurant also serves a variety of grilled fish, udon and soba and I have found all of them to be really good!! If it's on the menu, please order the sōmen with ume! I could eat this stuff everyday for the rest of my life! I have already dined at Katsuno several times and definitely plan on visiting again and again. The service here is really friendly and polite. Also, the restaurant is small but has a very homey, comfortable atmosphere - great place to catch up with friends over an excellent meal!
