The sushi was good & fresh but it wasn't particularly cold. The problem was that the sushi wasn't really made to order because there were a lot of sushi plates sitting out at room temp, all made up, waiting for the waiters to take them to the tables. The oysters might not have been fresh. They put them on ice but when you put an oyster with a really thick shell on ice, the shell insulates the actual oyster from the cold ice. The oysters were also sitting around waiting for the waiters to take them to the tables. They should keep everything in the fridge until a customer orders them. Anyways, I was ok because I did not eat the oysters but my date ate oysters and he got the runs the next morning. I also did not like how the sushi rolls did not list what the ingredients were on the menu. All the sushi rolls were mystery rolls.
What I liked about the sushi was that they used real sushi rice and cooked it with the right amount of vinegar. Also, there was not a lot of rice. The fish to rice ratio was very good. Furthermore, the flavor of the Kauboi roll was really good. Whatever sauce they used was really tasty. It was slightly tangy with a hint of sweetness. The Kauboi roll was salmon and tuna wrapped wit soy paper topped with avocado. Yum!
The photos of the wagyu signature steak looked really marbled on the internet, but the "wagyu" signature steak that I got was not marbled at all. It was just plain sirloin with a strip of gristle in the middle. I had to slice off the gristle before I could eat that steak as the gristle was too tough to chew. Furthermore, they don't provide knives and forks. How the heck do you serve steak with no knives and forks? I asked the waiter for a fork and I was given a wobbly PLASTIC fork. I ended up using my pocket knife and the provided chopsticks to awkwardly eat my steak. Also, they did not provide butter, salt nor pepper. Again, how the heck do you eat steak without salt, pepper nor butter? I asked the waiter and they did have garlic. Luckily, before I came to this restaurant, I went shopping at Whole Foods across the street and I bought some salt, pepper and butter. This was a happy coincidence because I used my own salt, pepper and butter to season my steaks. However, in all fairness, they did provide soy sauce, wasabi hot sauce and the grill was already oiled. I just prefer salt, pepper & butter to soy sauce, wasabi & whatever plant based oil they were oiling their grills with.
Now, on to the good stuff! The ribeye steak was as so flavorful, tender and soft that I shed a tear while I bit into it for the first time. The cow tongue was absolutely insanely delish. They cut away the outer layer of the tongue only to leave the most tender tongue center. OMG! The prime boneless ribs were absolutely amazing! The marinated version had some pieces that were cut too thick but the flavor was absolutely delish! It was sweet, savory and tangy. Yum!
I only have 1 minor complaint regarding the menu. There are no desserts on the menu. Hint: please put some mochi ice cream on the menu. I'd really appreciate that.
Basically, everything in this restaurant was delish. The only exception would be the oysters, which I advise you to skip.
Our waiter was on point and laid everything that I ordered on my table in less than 5 minutes. Katy was a superstar! However, I don't think they have enough waiters because I waited 1 hour and 15 minutes to be seated and there were plenty of empty tables available in the restaurant that went unused by any diners, probably because they didn't have enough waiters. They need to hire more waiters in order to keep wait times reasonable.
This restaurant is NOT a romantic getaway for a dinner for two. It is very loud inside. They also play techno music. I felt like I was in a dance club. This is the place to get rowdy with your friends and enjoy a hearty meal of delicious food. They are in the process of getting a liquor license so for now, they are a BYOB restaurant.
For the best AYCE steaks and good sushi rolls, dine at Kauboi Japanese Grill & Izakaya !
