Ukrainian Restaurant Owners Find New Opportunities in Chicago | Eater Chicago

"Opened in September in Lakeview, this small coffee bar and cafe leans into from-scratch baking and a careful coffee program with Metric Coffee, turning out croissants, macarons, specialty cakes, and cookies alongside savory plates like shakshuka, eggs Benedict, and egg bowls. Weekends bring strong turnout from fellow Ukrainians while weekdays are quieter, but the focus remains on high-quality ingredients. A top-seller is syrnyky, Ukrainian-style pancakes made from farmer cheese custom-cultured by a local Ukrainian-owned dairy, with about half ordered by non-Ukrainians. Named for “fairy tale,” the space aims to add a little magic to daily life." - Lisa Shames

Kazka City Cafe Opens in Lakeview, Serving Ukrainian-Influenced Breakfast and Brunch | Eater Chicago

"A warm, inviting all-day breakfast and brunch spot in Lakeview, this 30-seat, counter-service cafe—named for the Ukrainian word for “fairy tale”—channels Roman and Maria Semeniv’s hospitality and modern food sensibility after relocating from Ukraine in 2023 with their two kids. Developed with Kyiv chefs Daria Trofimenkova and Oleksandr Trofimenkov, the menu leans Ukrainian with syrnyky (traditional farmer’s cheese pancakes) already the top seller and a shakshuka built on a sauce with a secret ingredient, alongside classics like avocado toast, berry-topped pancakes, and eggs Benedict. Maria’s baking background shows in croissants, pecan rolls, macarons, breads, and a pistachio cheesecake, while coffee by Metric anchors specialty drinks and teas, colorful matcha lattes (mango-passionfruit, rose), and the standout cappuorange—fresh orange juice blended with a double shot of espresso, served hot or cold—popular in Ukraine and now winning over Chicagoans. There’s a collaboration to sell black caviar, with a sturgeon roe dish possibly coming later. Designed by Kyiv’s Rizdvo Design Bureau, the sunlit room features large windows, wood-paneled walls, leather-backed seating, a green communal table, and a living lime tree piercing its center, softening an industrial-minimalist look in a space that once housed Michelin-starred Entente. Open daily 7 a.m.–5 p.m., Kazka City Cafe has quickly drawn enthusiastic crowds, especially on weekends." - Jeffy Mai

"Kazka City Cafe is a new cafe and bakery in Lakeview. Drinkwise, they have coffee, tea, and different varieties of matcha lattes. Their food menu includes pastries and dishes like croque madame, shakshuka, and syrnyky with cherries. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - John Ringor

Google
What a great addition to Lakeview. The location looks small because the storefront is relatively narrow but it’s deep. Beautiful place, impeccably clean decor and delicious food. I tried the syrniki on my first visit and it was heavenly! There are incredibly light cheese pancakes, served with warm, spiced cherries, mascarpone cheese and crushed pistachios. Outstanding! I tried the chocolate bun on my second visit. It’s sort of like a morning bun filled with chocolate (whipped cream possibly?). Delicious, flaky and perfectly sweet. I’m ready to explore the entire menu! Also, I had a nice chat with the woman who is one of the owners. We talked about Ukraine food and how nice it is to have this place on the north side of the city!

The food and pastry here are elevated, tasty, and filled with details! The eggs Benedict was light and refreshing — it’s not the typical ones with heavy hollandaise sauce. It is more balanced and complex with the addition of pickled beets. I appreciate the contrast between the spinach, micro greens, soft comfy brioche bread, and perfectly creamy egg yolk. The smoked salmon seems house-cured and added great salt and texture. My friends ordered the sandwich and happy breakfast and liked those as well. The rose matcha was fragrant. The croissant had this cream on top that made it luscious, and the lavender cheese cake bar was unique! Interior is super cute! I would come back again and try more food!

Just visited Kazka City Cafe and loved every bit of it! I tried the pastrami sandwich with the sauce on the side. Honestly, the sauce stole the show. The mango-matcha and rose-matcha were phenomenal. And the chocolate croissant? So perfectly crisp and flaky. This place is a gem great food, stellar drinks, and a cozy vibe. Highly recommend!

Google
We had the dirty matcha and cherry espresso tonic. The matcha was a bit weak. The espresso tonic was refreshing. Great menu selection. Breakfast all day 🤩. They still had a variety of pastries available even at 3pm. Food was good, beautiful presentation. Good vibes, not a lot of people, decent space and seating available. Aesthetic instagram clean girl cafe.

Google
This place really impressed me. Interior design is very well thought out, and vibes immediately gives you nice feeling when you walk in. I think many other restaurants nearby could learn — people don’t just come to eat, they come to enjoy a beautiful space and change their routine. As for food — I ordered avocado toast, and it was probably best toast I’ve had in USA. Bread was fresh, and avocado was perfectly soft. Coffee was delicious. Croissants and macarons were also very tasty. I strongly recommend this restaurant. Thank you to people who create places like this — I hope they will have more restaurants.

What an absolute gem! This new Ukrainian cafe is a breath of fresh air. From the moment you walk in, the warm and welcoming vibe sets the tone for a great experience. Service is fantastic- attentive, friendly and genuinely passionate about what they do. The food and drinks are on another level-every bite feels like comfort and creativity combined. Must try the espresso cherry tonic it’s my new favorite caffeinated beverage. The pistachio croissant was delicious! I can’t wait to try more items from their menu. The atmosphere is cozy yet lively, making it a great spot wether you’re catching up with friends, working through breakfast or lunch or simply just to treat yourself. Highly recommend-I promise this new spot will not disappoint!

I really enjoyed! The croissant was fresh, buttery, and perfectly flaky, and the coffee was smooth and rich. The atmosphere is cozy, and it’s a great spot to relax for a while. Definitely a place I’d come back to

Yelp
Loved this new cafe on Lincoln. We had the pastrami melt and chocolate croissant for breakfast, and they did not disappoint. The dirty matcha and the mocha were made to perfection. The cafe has cute interiors and friendly staff.

Yelp
This coffee was the perfect balance of tasting actual coffee that isn't diluted mixed with some tartness. The Blueberry Coconut Matcha was light, but if you want a stronger matcha flavor, I recommend getting extra which is only $1 more. As for the pastries, I will say this was the best ham & cheese croissant I've ever had. Savory, nutty from the roasted seeds, and I haven't had better. My favorite pastry I tried was the Berry Mascarpone New York Roll. Floral notes from the raspberry, flakey, and fresh. Their macarons are a little thicker, almost like mini sandwiches and were also tasty. For food, I had to try their syrniky since these are a childhood favorite of mine. I loved these so much, they're like little farmer's cheese pillows, paired wonderfully with those spiced cherries. Don't sleep on this Pastrami Melt that came out all glitz and glammed up, but the looks do translate to the taste. Sweet from the mustard apple sauce and vanilla-glazed bacon, yet still stimulating familiar flavors with the Pastrami and fermented cabbage.

Yelp
Stopped by newly opened Kazka City Cafe off Lincoln this weekend, and it was awesome. They have a big selection of different matcha along with their coffee and plenty of heartier breakfast options along with pastries. I was able to easily order online through their website so my order was ready when I stopped by to grab it.
