Ukrainian Restaurant Owners Find New Opportunities in Chicago | Eater Chicago

"Opened in September in Lakeview, this small coffee bar and cafe leans into from-scratch baking and a careful coffee program with Metric Coffee, turning out croissants, macarons, specialty cakes, and cookies alongside savory plates like shakshuka, eggs Benedict, and egg bowls. Weekends bring strong turnout from fellow Ukrainians while weekdays are quieter, but the focus remains on high-quality ingredients. A top-seller is syrnyky, Ukrainian-style pancakes made from farmer cheese custom-cultured by a local Ukrainian-owned dairy, with about half ordered by non-Ukrainians. Named for “fairy tale,” the space aims to add a little magic to daily life." - Lisa Shames

Kazka City Cafe Opens in Lakeview, Serving Ukrainian-Influenced Breakfast and Brunch | Eater Chicago

"A warm, inviting all-day breakfast and brunch spot in Lakeview, this 30-seat, counter-service cafe—named for the Ukrainian word for “fairy tale”—channels Roman and Maria Semeniv’s hospitality and modern food sensibility after relocating from Ukraine in 2023 with their two kids. Developed with Kyiv chefs Daria Trofimenkova and Oleksandr Trofimenkov, the menu leans Ukrainian with syrnyky (traditional farmer’s cheese pancakes) already the top seller and a shakshuka built on a sauce with a secret ingredient, alongside classics like avocado toast, berry-topped pancakes, and eggs Benedict. Maria’s baking background shows in croissants, pecan rolls, macarons, breads, and a pistachio cheesecake, while coffee by Metric anchors specialty drinks and teas, colorful matcha lattes (mango-passionfruit, rose), and the standout cappuorange—fresh orange juice blended with a double shot of espresso, served hot or cold—popular in Ukraine and now winning over Chicagoans. There’s a collaboration to sell black caviar, with a sturgeon roe dish possibly coming later. Designed by Kyiv’s Rizdvo Design Bureau, the sunlit room features large windows, wood-paneled walls, leather-backed seating, a green communal table, and a living lime tree piercing its center, softening an industrial-minimalist look in a space that once housed Michelin-starred Entente. Open daily 7 a.m.–5 p.m., Kazka City Cafe has quickly drawn enthusiastic crowds, especially on weekends." - Jeffy Mai

Kazka City Cafe - Review - Lakeview - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Kazka City Cafe is a new cafe and bakery in Lakeview. Drinkwise, they have coffee, tea, and different varieties of matcha lattes. Their food menu includes pastries and dishes like croque madame, shakshuka, and syrnyky with cherries. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - John Ringor

Google
What a great addition to Lakeview. The location looks small because the storefront is relatively narrow but it’s deep. Beautiful place, impeccably clean decor and delicious food. I tried the syrniki on my first visit and it was heavenly! There are incredibly light cheese pancakes, served with warm, spiced cherries, mascarpone cheese and crushed pistachios. Outstanding! I tried the chocolate bun on my second visit. It’s sort of like a morning bun filled with chocolate (whipped cream possibly?). Delicious, flaky and perfectly sweet. I’m ready to explore the entire menu! Also, I had a nice chat with the woman who is one of the owners. We talked about Ukraine food and how nice it is to have this place on the north side of the city!

The food and pastry here are elevated, tasty, and filled with details! The eggs Benedict was light and refreshing — it’s not the typical ones with heavy hollandaise sauce. It is more balanced and complex with the addition of pickled beets. I appreciate the contrast between the spinach, micro greens, soft comfy brioche bread, and perfectly creamy egg yolk. The smoked salmon seems house-cured and added great salt and texture. My friends ordered the sandwich and happy breakfast and liked those as well. The rose matcha was fragrant. The croissant had this cream on top that made it luscious, and the lavender cheese cake bar was unique! Interior is super cute! I would come back again and try more food!

Lovely café with amazing breakfasts. We really enjoyed the food — fresh ingredients, great flavors, and good portions. The coffee was excellent. Perfect spot to start the day. Highly recommend!

Hands down the best lunch in Chicago! That creamy mushroom soup and turkey sandwich are so good. Can’t get enough, coming back again and again. 100/10!

Just visited Kazka City Cafe and loved every bit of it! I tried the pastrami sandwich with the sauce on the side. Honestly, the sauce stole the show. The mango-matcha and rose-matcha were phenomenal. And the chocolate croissant? So perfectly crisp and flaky. This place is a gem great food, stellar drinks, and a cozy vibe. Highly recommend!

Google
We had the dirty matcha and cherry espresso tonic. The matcha was a bit weak. The espresso tonic was refreshing. Great menu selection. Breakfast all day 🤩. They still had a variety of pastries available even at 3pm. Food was good, beautiful presentation. Good vibes, not a lot of people, decent space and seating available. Aesthetic instagram clean girl cafe.

Such a cute and cozy cafe! The blue coconut matcha and almond croissant were so delicious! Definitely will be back to try more things off the menu soon! Got a cute holiday cookie too!

Google
This place really impressed me. Interior design is very well thought out, and vibes immediately gives you nice feeling when you walk in. I think many other restaurants nearby could learn — people don’t just come to eat, they come to enjoy a beautiful space and change their routine. As for food — I ordered avocado toast, and it was probably best toast I’ve had in USA. Bread was fresh, and avocado was perfectly soft. Coffee was delicious. Croissants and macarons were also very tasty. I strongly recommend this restaurant. Thank you to people who create places like this — I hope they will have more restaurants.

Yelp
The food was downright DELISH, service was quick, and the staff kindly modified the dishes to be without red meat for me! The one thing I'd call out is that the ambiance was not as warm as I expected (the interiors had a bit of an industrial look), but still a great working space! Here is everything I tried: - Mango Passion Iced Matcha (Oat Milk): um this was simply amazing and I don't even typically like matcha. It had the perfect blend of matcha and mango flavor, without being too sweet- I'd definitely go back for this. - Croque Madam Sandwich (No Ham): this was probably the best thing I ate...in a WHILE. Which is saying a lot because I am a baker and content creator, so I am quite picky (@sowmthingsweet if you wanna check out my videos!!). The brioche was so incredibly soft, and when paired w the bechamel sauce & fried egg, it literally melted in my mouth. - Mushroom Dream (no bacon): one of the most unique croissants I've EVER had and I was able to make it vegetarian!! SUPER mushroom forward, so defs don't get this is if you're not the biggest fan of mushrooms. Paired w the brie cheese foam, it was the definition of decadent. - Mascarpone & Berries Croissant Roll: This one had me speechless. I typically dont like filled croissants because they tend to be too sweet or not filled enough, but this one hit the nail on the head- the creamy custard paired with the tart berries, and flaky croissant dough, was literal heaven. - Pistachio Croissant: this SCREAMED pistachio, however personally, the pistachio paste was a bit too overwhelming and not salty enough to cut through the decadence. - Iced Dirty Spice Chai (Oat Milk): couldn't really taste the chai and the coffee base was a bit too tart for my taste, but I bet it would taste much different if it was warm. - Tiramisu: Such a cute dessert visually! I really wanted to try this dessert because I LOVE tiramisu but am therefore critical of it. I found this one to be too dry for my taste and heavy on the cocoa powder on top adding onto the dry-ness. - Svrnyky with Spiced Cherry: First time trying Svrnyky!! This reminded me so much of paneer and ricotta, love the culture overlap. The subtle flavor of these cheese discs paired well with the tangy cream and cherries, however I wasn't a fan of the overall texture as I was expecting a souffle like texture, but that's just my personal preference.

Yelp
I don't know how to feel about this place. Very interesting vibes. I thought based off of the photos online that it would've been a little more cozy inside, but I think the lighting is a bit too bright and maybe needs to be more warm tones. The service was also just ok. I feel like the guy working there wasn't super friendly or acknowledged us much when we approached the counter. I did like the shakshuka though so I have to say that was a bit between my friend and I. Finding a napkin (when I went) was also difficult. I had to ask the staff for some. Overall, unsure i'd go out of my way to come here again, but I do think since they're pretty new that they have some kinks to work out.

Yelp
I came here on Sunday for brunch with my husband and this place blew my mind. Their mango passion matcha latte was super refreshing and so good that I will for sure order again next time I return. I freaking love their shakshuka. The only reason why I came here is because it's hard to find places in Chicago that offer shakshuka as a brunch item. My husband had their chicken wrap which was very filling and ordered the brown cardamom latte. Super cute café with very unique food options. It wasn't super busy when I came so drinks and food were served pretty quickly. I can't wait to be back to try their croque madame a sandwich and other pastries. I came a bit late in the day, so they didn't have a ton of options for pastries for me to choose from which means next time I will have to come earlier in the day.

Yelp
Love the modern, clean, and bright interior, especially the small but super thoughtful kids' table that kept our toddler happily occupied. Even though many guests were fashionable (we love to see!), the café still feels warm and welcoming for everyone. The baked goods selection is both beautiful and unique, and the drink menu is large. We ordered the iced rose matcha and the hot brown cardamom latte -- both were excellent. For pastries, we tried the New York pecan croissant, the long ham-and-cheese croissant, and a light green cake. The flavors and textures were not the best we've had in the city, but everything was stunning to look at. Overall, a great experience. We'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Forgot to write a review on this place after we stumbled on it last week just walking in the neighborhood . Best latte I have had ( maybe ever ?) . I dreamed all week of having that latte again ( yes, it was that good ) . We returned this morning for another one ( and a cup of black drip coffee for my husband who also has proclaimed it to be best coffee in this city ) . Haven't tried the food yet but the breakfast / brunch menu looks fantastic and the pastries at the counter are stunning looking . Highly recommend- I'll be back next weekend .

Yelp
The cafe had a very cute interior and friendly staff. We got a slice of cake and two drinks and the total was over $30 which was a bit shocking to see so it's definitely a bit higher priced cafe. The cake and two drinks were very good.

Yelp
Loved this new cafe on Lincoln. We had the pastrami melt and chocolate croissant for breakfast, and they did not disappoint. The dirty matcha and the mocha were made to perfection. The cafe has cute interiors and friendly staff.

Yelp
**PEOPLE WITH FOOD ALLERGIES BEWARE** My roommate informed the server of her nut allergy before ordering! After over 40 minutes of waiting for the food (following a 20 minute wait in line to order), we received 2 out of 4 of our food items and had to go back to have them make the 2 missed items. Once home, midway through eating, she began to have an allergic reaction & found NUTS in the eggs benedict sauce. This was very scary as nuts were NOT listed in the ingredients for the food item, and the kitchen was made aware of this food allergy prior to ordering!!! Additionally, there is no space to wait for to go items and we found ourselves constantly shuffling out of the way of people waiting to order as well as those big metal carts being used to push a few plates across the small dining space. There is sooo much potential; the food & drinks are unique and SO GOOD!!! I suggest crossing off unavailable menu items as there were multiple food/drink items unavailable causing last minute decision changes (which is prob why the line takes so long....). The workers were friendly but also seemed kind of confused about some things (I asked for whole milk and she told me skim milk is whole milk....). Across the board, it appears service has been a large factor in negative reviews of this cafe, so hopefully you guys can take constructive criticism to improve! Although, based on the other snarky replies to reviews from the business owner on Google reviews, I'm not too hopeful about that

Yelp
Amazing service, it has amazing music that's not too loud but enough where it's an amazing time. Everyone was so sweet and most importantly amazing food! it's such a cute brunch place !

Yelp
This coffee was the perfect balance of tasting actual coffee that isn't diluted mixed with some tartness. The Blueberry Coconut Matcha was light, but if you want a stronger matcha flavor, I recommend getting extra which is only $1 more. As for the pastries, I will say this was the best ham & cheese croissant I've ever had. Savory, nutty from the roasted seeds, and I haven't had better. My favorite pastry I tried was the Berry Mascarpone New York Roll. Floral notes from the raspberry, flakey, and fresh. Their macarons are a little thicker, almost like mini sandwiches and were also tasty. For food, I had to try their syrniky since these are a childhood favorite of mine. I loved these so much, they're like little farmer's cheese pillows, paired wonderfully with those spiced cherries. Don't sleep on this Pastrami Melt that came out all glitz and glammed up, but the looks do translate to the taste. Sweet from the mustard apple sauce and vanilla-glazed bacon, yet still stimulating familiar flavors with the Pastrami and fermented cabbage.

Yelp
Stopped by newly opened Kazka City Cafe off Lincoln this weekend, and it was awesome. They have a big selection of different matcha along with their coffee and plenty of heartier breakfast options along with pastries. I was able to easily order online through their website so my order was ready when I stopped by to grab it.
