The Best Rice Porridges to Savor in Los Angeles

"Head to this beloved Chinatown bakery at sun up for a comforting bowl of porridge topped with white pepper and fresh scallions. Be sure to grab a few hot-from-the-oven egg tarts on the way out. This is primarily a place for takeout, so plan accordingly." - Cathy Chaplin, Eater Staff

Google
It's a super unassuming place, but you can purchase some delicious bread, treats, and other tasty food for cents. Very literally cents. The folks who work here are just doing their job and aren't going to be all that sociable. Just go in, pick a few beads, pay in cash and go on your way. I think the only thing missing for a 5 stars is providing a bit more approachability to their food. A lot of times you will go on a leap of faith and just point at what you want without having a clear idea of the taste. This is a bit more of a language barrier, so I feel bad docking a star. However, it would help a lot with bringing more customers in from someone just looking at Google Maps.

KBC Bakery is the best bakery in China Town!!! It's very hard to find Chinese Rice Cake made so perfectly. I also enjoy the sponge cake. Personally my favorite bakery! KBC面包店是唐人街最好的面包店,您可以制作最好的中国年糕

Yelp
Don't let the name of this place fool you. It's a bakery and dim sum spot! On a recent visit through Chinatown I came to check out this place after many years later and after the pandemic had subsided. Heads up cash only! It's a local mom and pop and family owned business. It's the same people running he show for many years. This place used to be spot that a lot of the older folks came every morning for their morning dim sum tea and quick meals. The interior has never changed. Same tables and chairs and the same looking sauce containers. I remember coming here as a kid on weekend mornings for quick and easy dim sum. Their rice rolls with beef were the best! Don't forget the egg tarts! They are one of he best places that make the most crispy and filling egg tarts. On my recent visit back, a lot of the food items were priced individually and the variety had really decreased drastically. They used to sell so many variety of buns from hot dog buns to milk custard ones. I really miss the old school days, when this place was so busy and had lots going on. Now they sell a few items and the overnight food items are packaged on the side. Nothing wrong with them, anything pastry overnight are bagged and sold differently. If you are in the area grab an egg tart, it's still better than the ones in the SGV!

Yelp
It's Dragon Boat Festival and time for Joongs! For some people they are lucky enough to have homemade Joongs - delicious sweet rice filled with meats, sausages, and other goodies wrapped in bamboo leaves and boiled or steamed. For me, I don't have that luxury. So this past weekend I had to scour Chinese eateries, delis and bakeries to find one that still had not sold out. Of course I wasn't looking for just any Joong, each family and village in China has their own special versions of Joong. My family being from Taishan, I naturally concentrated my search in LA's Chinatown where many of the shops are owned by Taishanese - People of Tong. I armed myself with a list of 3 potential places to find Joongs. One was KBC bakery. I was invited in by a lady that spoke to me in Taishanese... I knew I was in the right place. She asked me if I wanted Joongs made with mung beans or peanuts... mung beans?! No no my family used peanuts. I want Joongs with peanuts and salted eggs! She only had two left. I took both. Their joongs were similar in style to the ones my auntie used to make. Just the right proportion of sweet sticky rice and peanuts. Tho, I felt they were a bit chitnzy with the salted eggs. I don't think I counted more than 1/2 the yolk. The sausage was just a bit too soft but had good flavor. The pork was flavorful and with just fat enough to be authentic but lean enough for today's fat conscious eater of Joongs. Overall these were very good joongs, maybe even excellent joongs but my aunties cooking set a high standard. Next time? I eat joongs year round.

Yelp
KBC Bakery is absolutely the best Chinese bakery I have ever been to in my life. The egg tarts ARE AMAZING ... they are better than 85C and Portos!!!! And I have had my share of egg tarts.. best in all USA. I would highly recommend the egg custard sweet bread. Just ask for it and they will know exactly what you are talking about. Go around 9am and the bread is fresh !!! The prices are really cheap and sometimes I want to tell them to charge more. The ladies don't really interact that much but they are super sweet and I can tell they love their business.

Yelp
I love rice noodles!!! I used to go to Tian's Dim Sum to get them but they don't serve their usual items anymore. Keung Kee sell them too but they are the thinner ones which are okay too, but I prefer them thicker. Then I come across this place that my grandpa introduced me to! Their noodles are made the same way as Tian's Dim Sum. I've only tried their plain noodles and I really love it! It's only .90 cents and I usually get two. My new fave place to go!

Yelp
We came here to pick up something small to tide us over as we watched the Chinese New Year Golden Dragon Parade in China Town. We decided on the jian dui (sesame balls). Food quality: 3/5 Customer service: 3/5 The jian dui was a little oily, very thin, and didn't have much black bean inside. However, it had a nice crispy outside and was very inexpensive. This little hole in the wall had a large selection of goods and I wouldn't mind coming back to try some of the other things they offer.

Yelp
Wow, ghetto fab gem. 730a & only joint full of ppl sitting around individually, old geesers - but thats how you know its good. Cheap, cash. Parking: difficult, but this place is worth walking by if you're a block or so away. I wouldn't drive too far or more than 10minutes for this place. It was good at the moment, but I grew up in Alhambra where I know theres plenty of other places.

Yelp
We were walking around Chinatown area looking for egg tarts and came upon this bakery. By the look of it everything was very affordable but we just wanted egg tart. Bought two and they were very old and sour. I ended up taking two bites and throwing it away. Probably won't be back.

Yelp
Good place to go for cheap and affordable dimsum in the area. White sugar cake (白糖糕) is really good here and worth getting. Still soft the next day! I believe it is around 65 cents for a piece. Get the steamed turnip cakes and taro cakes. They have two kinds (steamed vs pan fried). Steamed ones are much bigger in size, and you can take it home and pan fry it yourself. Both taro and turnip are good. Note that these are not vegetarian- they contain meat and shrimp. Egg tarts- probably not the best place to get egg tarts, but still pretty good and much cheaper than other places. Chicken Lotus wrap? (罗米鸡)- not a fan. The sticky rice isn't that great, and while other places have a chinese sausage or even salted egg yolk in it, they only have chicken in theirs. Very big piece for $1.30 I believe. Malay cake (马来糕)- soft and fluffy! I've had it at other places that make them rock hard.. I've been here a couple of times, and the food has always been consistent.

Yelp
I should have guessed by the look of the 3 ladies working behind the counter that they weren't excited about their wares. I was in the neighborhood eating at the Little Jewel and took a walk around the area. Found this place and decided to buy some bread. The display was about half empty and what was left didn't look too fresh. Still, I took a chance and bought an assortment of whatever they had to try. The prices were low so what could go wrong? Well... apparently everything. I think out of the 10 different breads I bought, only 1 was edible. The rest either had no flavor or was old enough that they turned into bricks, or both no flavor and hard as rocks. I managed a bite or two on most items and threw them all away. None had the spongy goodness and flavor of either Kee Wah or Domie's, both of which are way closer to home for me. I didn't try any of the salty or savory items, just the sweet bread. Based on what I had, I wouldn't go back. Good luck to you if you go there. Hope you have a better experience than me.

Yelp
Man is this our new Go To Place for Chinese Tamales, Gai Lun, dry shrimp rice wrap roll, bbq pork rice wrap roll, Mom's packaged rice wrap rolls and sticky rice pastries. As good as these were.... they their other goodies must be Delectable too. I must trie it all. ALL I Can Say is... Chinese Grandma's must be their food prep staff. Authentic. Richly flavored. Yes they speak rural China country villiage Chinese here. http://toisandescendant.blogspot.com/2013/01/where-is-toisan-and-what-is-toisanese.html?m=1 Any ways... I was so in Happy Land sampling foods... lol, I did'nt Check in or do Yelp picturing. We actually shopped serveral Chinatown Foodie places with our CBS Chinese Food Restuarant check in tho. Actually 6 places. Trust me I knows awesome Toisan Cantonese Foods.

Yelp
I was recommended to this bakery by my wife, she said this location has really good dim sum for affordable price. I've decided to visit when I was summoned for jury duty. I've tried many others dim sum places in Chinatown this bakery is by far the best I've tried so far. Every time I swing by Chinatown, I would definitely stop by to help myself some yummy dim sum. This location may look iffy from the outside but definitely a gem in my opinion. Highly recommended, have to try to appreciate.

Yelp
If you live in the area, I imagine this is a good staple of a place to get baked goods from. But being a one time visitor I got to find an egg custard place that's better or closer to me. Found on Broadway, smack dab in the middle of Chinatown KBC is another quaint bakery. I went here after a recent trip to SF chinatown and was hoping to find egg custard places close to home. Now while I did find an egg custard, some pretty decent food at unbeatable prices I don't think I can justify driving an hour when I can just make the trip to somewhere in Arcadia. Just as other reviews said; the place is filled with grandpas who sit around reading newspapers, chatting it up and sipping tea. A little dingy but at the prices you can get the food (most things are 75 cents or less) you should expect it. I got some pineapple shaped bread, pork sausage dumplings, egg custard and steamed bbq pork buns. All were solid and if you're in the area and just want some good Chinese baked goods I would say this is a decent place to stop by. But at 65 cents I should've expected there to only be a small bite of bbq pork to a 5 bite steamed bun. TLDR - quaint, a bit dingy, but good baked goods. If you're going through Chinatown, maybe make a stop here. If you don't you're not missing too much.

Yelp
I love coming here after 3pm cause a lot of their items that usually go for 40-60 cents are 3 for a dollar. Good salt-water dumplings rice noodle rolls. It may look intimidating for the non Chinese speaking but it is english friendly, a lot of their clientèle are older Chinese, but don't mind them.

Yelp
Best beef balls I've ever had. Although it can't compare to the experience of having the dim sum carts pushed around table to table, the prices can't be beat. I actually think the food at this bakery tastes better than dim sum restaurants, with each portion being bigger as well. It is a hole in the wall experience that can't be missed if you are in Chinatown. Admittedly, the crowd there are chinese folk directly from China, including the employees, but they are nice and they know enough English (and surprisingly Spanish!) to communicate.

Yelp
Almost every time we go to LA, we stop by this place on Broadway in Chinatown for their delicious dim sum style steamed beef balls. The beef balls are huge and always fresh. So if you are in a hurry and don't have time to sit down for dim sum, just order one of these to go. They also make pretty good Northern China style steamed buns "Mantou". A very fluffy white steamed bun with nothing inside and a hint of sweetness. Absolutely delightful.

Yelp
Awesome chinese bakery! There are lots of chinese buns, breads and cookies, most under $1!! Beat that!! Baked goods that I saw were: Plain steamed buns (white and whole wheat ) Lotus moon cake Mini moon cakes Almond cookies 4 for $1 Turnip cakes Hot dog bun Ham n cheese bun Baked/steamed custard bun Baked/steamed BBQ pork bun Steamed chicken bun Pineapple bun Steamed rice cake Fried taro cake Fried sticky bun Beef/pork /chicken rice rolls Pork or beef xiu mai Shrimp har how Steamed/fried turnip cake The steamed chicken bun was really good and flavorful. Cheap and good!!! I will definitely be back.

Yelp
Came here as a kid and loved the steamed buns. Even though most of the staff doesn't speak much English, I was able to communicate with them. This has been the bakery for quick snacks that's quite cheap which makes the good more the satisfying. My mother used to work at CT so when ever I have the chance, I would just stop by the bakery for some egg tarts. Sometimes if they know you by name, which means you visit a lot, they can usually give some stuff on the house but that's just me though. I would definitely recommend this little bakery to any one that's near the area.

Yelp
I love 馒头 (steamed bread ) and this place is the bomb for it. Definitely store front is nothing to write home about but they make some traditional Chinese dim sum (ie rice rolls, sticky pudding etc) it is as cheap as it gets
google avatar

Kelly C.

Yelp
Love this place, I've been going here since I was a little girl and there's a reason why this place is still here after 20+ years. Price is unbeatable, portion is big and ultimately the dim sum is delicious. Although the staff there speaks limited English but they'll definitely try to give you their best customer service. My go to fast food dim sum place when I go down to Chinatown! Highly recommended!

Yelp
Reviews don't lie! Everything is really good and you cannot beat the price for it! My favorites are the egg tart I think it's better than Golden Gate Bakery in San Francisco (maybe I grew up with eating this one) and I know they are reliable in their hours unlike the other place. You might be there for the weekend and they happen to be closed and you made a special treat to get out of the way just to taste the freshly made tart. I also like their cheap price and this sweet twisted bun they use fresh made ingredients everyday! They are also known for the "man tau" which has is sweet steamed bun. Dip it with condensed milk or spread it with peanut butter and you are in heaven

Yelp
walking aimlessly in search of turnip cakes, a few business owners, dim sum owners themselves, told us to go here. Cheap and delicious. Not to mention, bargaining in Cantonese can't hurt, and can leave you with extra goodies in your bag for no extra cost!

Yelp
Cheap!!! Good!! It's a bit of a cluster in KBC but for value you're not going to get Chinese fast food better

Lisa T.

Yelp
If you're looking for the authentic kind of dim sum, then you should definitely put KBC bakery on your list. I've never tasted dim sum that is even close to the ones of my native country. Truly amazing. Also, the food is cheap and affordable. The service is great as well. Definitely will come back and recommend to friends!
