Houston’s Best Coffee Shops | Eater Houston

"This Ethiopian coffee shop in Midtown offers a cozy spot to enjoy coffee drinks from the Motherland of coffee. Enjoy more purist versions of coffee, including espresso, pour-overs, and drip coffee, or go for some of the signature options. You can’t go wrong with the ever-popular Addis brown sugar and vanilla latte, the honey cardamom Kefita latte, or the Abyssinia latte made with a syrup that uses Ethiopian spices. Try them all in the Bunna flight, and pair with one of Kefita’s breakfast tacos, vegan monkey bread, or the sambusas. For an extra special experience, visit during Kefita’s coffee ceremony, which happens just once a month." - Brianna Griff

Words cannot describe how much I enjoyed my coffee and time at Kefita. Ernesto was friendly, knowledgeable, and extremely welcoming to us while making the most delicious drinks. Kefita is a house with many rooms to explore and unwind in. There are even craft activities and board games throughout the floors to play! I cannot wait to come back.

I love to support local coffee shops, and I'm really glad that I decided to check Kefita Coffee this morning. I wasn't sure about what I wanted to order, but the guy behind the counter suggested I try the Abyssinian Latte and an order of Sambusa for a bite to eat. It was my first time trying either one, and they did not disappoint 🔥☺️ I'm sure I'll be here a lot more in the future.

Google
Looooooove this spot!!! The vibe is so chill and laid back. Very cozy, like a home feel. The service was great. The owner was very knowledgeable and welcoming. The spot was very clean and spacious. There are 2 levels. A lot of spaces are available. There is indoor and outdoor seating. There is also a balcony. Free street parking. Love the selection of music. I could have easily stayed there all day. It was hard for me to leave. So peaceful. I purchased the abyssinia latte (hot), sambusa and small donuts (carrot cake, caramel) which come as a pair. Everything was tasty. My favorite were the small donuts. OMG!!!! Soooooo delicious 😋 The carmel was my favorite out of the two. There are other flavors to choose from. I will definitely be back to try the flight and other pastries and food items. Check em them out. You won't be disappointed.

I visited this coffee shop for the first time today and immediately knew I would be back! The staff is welcoming and friendly. They have good coffee selections and delicious seasonal drinks (I tried the candied yams latte). The space itself was also a vibe with plenty of room to do work or just socialize. I will be back!

Google
We got a couple drinks here and they both tasted pretty good! We had waited awhile for our drinks because they were busy but then gave us a couple of free treats to go along with it which was really nice :) There are some games to play too which makes it a fun atmosphere. We played mancala a couple rounds. Chill music playing in the background on a record player. People working too though so not super loud Great coffee shop overall!

Rosa L.

Google
my favorite coffee shop in Houston! It feels like hanging out at a cool friend’s house. The space is lovely and relaxing, the drinks are creative, and the baristas are friendly.

Google
My wife brought me here and I’m so glad she did. I’m always looking for a cafe to study and it looks like this will be it. The coffee, food, and vibe was great. The barista was friendly and knowledgeable. I can also appreciate that it wasn’t loud. I will for sure be back.

Google
We had a wonderful experience here! Everyone working the counter was friendly and courteous, their drink selection covers all the basics you could want in addition to some really wonderful specialty drinks. Their seasonal menu was really inventive and fun too! The food is also excellent, I got a Love Bun and woah! It was so good! The space seems very community oriented and welcoming, the vibes are chill and there is quite a bit of room to spread out. My group and I felt very welcomed here! They even remembered my name at the end of our visit as I bussed my things. After how many customers they served in my time there I was really surprised and touched. I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Wow, never have I ever had such an amazing experience from an Ethiopian coffee shop and the people whom run it. The mother-daughter duo here is unparalleled. You walk into a house that has been converted into a coffee house/arts space. At first, it throws you off. Is this a coffee spot?! Then, you find out they have converted the space into sections of a house where you can work and gather for a nice time. I met the daughter and she was very kind enough to show me around and walk me thru the menu. The menu is decorated with Ethiopian themed drinks and food. I had the single origin Ethiopian blend latte with a side order of the candied yam. The coffee was very light and had hints of berry in the tasting notes and the candy jam as a side was a nice pairing with the coffee. The ambience is that of a old-school retro Ethiopian house with wall art, coffee sets, and tons of cultural decorative pieces around the house. This was such a creative idea for a coffee house and working space and I hope this place grows continuously. The daughter also is in charge of the marketing which you can see the dedication and work with the graphics is phenomenal and very professional. Good luck to this duo and I hope anyone that is in the area can come check this place out because it truly is what we call a gym in the food and beverage industry. Great job team.!

Yelp
My first time visiting on a Saturday afternoon. There was actually an event going on for vision boarding for 2026 outside on the patio. And Crumbville Cookies was inside selling cookies for the pop up as well. I'm a chocolate chip cookie monster, so of course I had to partake. Parking- didn't see a dedicated lot unless I missed it? But there is street parking right out front and the side streets. Service- was sweet. The owner Ruby rang me up after I checked out there seasonal menu. And she delivered my coffee to me after I sat down upstairs. She recommended to use oak milk instead of my usual almond with my matcha flight to make it a better tasting, so I decided to go with that. Drink- I went with a Matcha flight. Which includes cornbread (more sweet then savory), sweet potatoe (my favorite of the 3), and kermita (which was like a biscoff or cookie butter flavor). After I ordered I got to explore the house turned coffee shop. Definitely cutesy and cozy. Merch for sale and nicely decorated with Ethiopian style decor. I like that there are multi areas to enjoy to lounge, study, work, or chat. There is an outside patio, for a nice day with umbrellas to block too much heat. Plus a downstairs with a nice playlist jamming. And there was upstairs, which is a quiet space for studying, working, reading. There's even an open kitchen up there. And they have a printer in one of the room for guests to use, plus wifi. My only real complaint was the coffee was warm but not hot. Which honestly I was ok with. As its easier for me to try all the drinks more quickly rather than waiting for them to cool off. Will for sure return. I love that they have a whole book rack for reading if you didn't bring anything yourself to read. Plus books all over for you to pick up or put down. Love supporting black owned businesses.

Yelp
Super cute and homey feeling coffee shop which makes sense because the exterior literally looks like a house (but also because of that it can be easy to drive right past them) The barista was chill and nice. I opted for the Kefita Latte which was creamy. I wish I could taste the cinnamon a little more but still not bad. I had visited basically right when they opened and he had let me know that the breakfast tacos weren't available yet so if that's what you're after I'd suggest going a little later. Street parking as it's in a midtown neighborhood. Pretty average coffee pricing

Yelp
Great place to get coffee and Matcha around Houston. I got their strawberry matcha which the strawberry was a foam, light but good. Super cozy space with good service. Overall, I recommend and would come back.

Yelp
I love coffee and am always looking to try new roasts from all over. On a recent lunch date nearby, we wanted some coffee and a place to chill and chat after lunch. I got on Yelp and found Kefita Coffee which a Ethiopian inspired coffee shop. It was definitely something new to me so I had to check it out. It is located in the Midtown area. Street parking is the thing here. It's a cute two story house which they turned into a coffee shop. It was somewhat busy when we came. There's a few different small rooms downstairs with seating as well as places to lounge upstairs. The kitchen is off to the back and where you order. Customer service was good enough. The guy behind the counter answered all questions but didn't seem to enthused to be there. Their menu consists of a bunch of different items. They have regular coffee and espresso drinks you see at every coffee shop, but they also have unique signature drinks as well as non espresso drinks like teas and such. I wanted to try the Ethiopian inspired items and they have a coffee flight that let me try them all. It had three of their signature drinks. The first was the Addis Latte. This was a brown sugar and vanilla latte. It was my favorite one. Simple but so so good. Next was the Abyssinia Latte. It was made with syrup made with Ethiopian spices. It was an interesting drink to me. It was good but the flavors were a tad bit confusing to me. Not something I would get again. The last was the Kefita Latte which had honey and cinnamon flavors. I've never had that combination but it worked and was delicious. The flight was a great way to see what they were working with. They also have hot and cold foods. We didn't partake this time. Overall, this is a very solid coffee spot. If you want something a little different, check this place out.

Yelp
My husband and I visited on a Sunday around 2:45 pm. We easily found free street parking in front. My husband's Ethiopian so I grew to love buna and was excited to finally try this cafe out. I loved the home conversion to cafe look which gave it a chill first impression from the outside. There were covered outdoor picnic style tables outside, a cozy couch indoor sitting area and regular tables in the main dining area. The mom and daughter duo were super nice and welcoming. The daughter informed me of their monthly buna coffee ceremony which I thought was cool to showcase the culture! We ordered the buna flight, majestique tea, and baklava. The buna flight includes 3 of their latte flavors Addis, Abyssinia, & Kefita. Addis tasted like a classic vanilla latte. I really enjoyed the Abyssinia & Kefita flavors much more with the prominent spices. It came with one shot of espresso each which was sufficient caffeine for late afternoon. The baklava was a perfect crispy crunch and sweetness, which paired perfectly with the flight. We chilled there until closing at 4 pm playing Mancala & chess. Many people were coming through and there is also an upstairs area. We definitely plan to bring some friends next time to hangout.

Yelp
Wow super cute coffee shop with roots stemming from Ethiopia. They offer a unique menu of beverages with pastries and breakfast bites. The coffee shop is a repurposed house with ample indoor and outdoor seating. It is furnished and decorated with Ethiopian decor. I tried a limu lomi which is lemonade and cold brew. An unorthodox sounding mix but omg does it taste amazing. The acidity of the lemonade and the coffee make for a beautiful mix. I also tried the vegan carrot cake donuts. They were unexpectedly moist. Kind of tasted like a bundt cake! This place is fabulous and I'll definitely add it to my list of coffee shops that I visit.

Yelp
If you're looking to switch up from your usual coffee spots, Kefita is a great spot to check out. With unique flavors and a quaint vibe, this is a good spot for either picking up some coffee or savoring some coffee while out with a friend. It's on the smaller side, so it can get crowded, but it's definitely a spot I'll try again. I got an americano with abyssinia, which was a blend of warm spices. I look forward to trying their coffee flight. In terms of food, they have a couple different snacks- I got the sambusa. I personally thought the outside was a bit too thick and the lentils were a bit too hard, but my husband loved it. There's street parking available by the coffee shop and non metered, which is convenient.

Yelp
Rating is 3.5 stars. So my first impression is to not come here on a Sunday early afternoon around 11:35-12 PM because it gets extremely busy & there is no parking close by. My sisters & I got inside around 11:40 AM, waited in line for some time, and then for our coffee/matcha until about 12:35-12:45 PM. It was very packed in here when we first got here, but when we finally left, we saw that there was some event outside and tons of people, so it then made sense as to why things were taking so long. I will say that the people who worked there were kind. The drinks that we got were okay. They were definitely unique. Two of us got the ruby red (which is a dirty matcha), one Abyssinia latte, & one Addis latte. Overall, I'll have to come here on a weekday to try other items.

Yelp
Stopped by Kefita Coffee while working from home and really enjoyed the vibe. I grabbed an iced flat white, treated myself to a chocolate croissant, and couldn't resist trying a sambusa too. The coffee was smooth and strong--exactly what I needed to power through the rest of my afternoon. The croissant was solid, flaky, and hit the spot. The sambusa wasn't my favorite; it had a bit too much pastry for my taste, but the lentil filling was flavorful and well-seasoned. What really stood out to me was the space--tons of room to spread out and work or just hang out. It's bright, welcoming, and has a really chill energy. The record player and curated music give it a warm, personal touch that makes you want to linger a little longer. Definitely worth a visit if you're into good coffee, calm spaces, and a little taste of Ethiopian hospitality. One cool feature: they offer a coffee flight, which is perfect if you want to sample a few different styles or share with a friend. It's a fun way to try something new. (I didn't get a pic of this but I will next time I go back and give it a try:) )

Yelp
Every time I come to the coffee shop, I am thoroughly impressed by what the owner is building. It's not just interesting coffees with unique flavor options (the namesake kefita latte is my favorite) -- it's a community. She showcases neighboring businesses with her food selection -- sometimes ones that I have never heard of even though I live a few blocks away. She curated a space where people work, enjoy & have deep conversations -- at the same time lifting other neighborhood businesses. While it's not inexpensive, the value you get from the space is so much more than just a drink. Midtown needs more thoughtful curation like this!
google avatar

Courtney C.

Yelp
Vibe- Very cute coffee shop with a home vibe! There's a nice amount of seating inside and there's an outside space as well. Customer service- Great! Food/drinks- I got the ruby red that is an iced dirty matcha; it was soooooooo good. Sadly, it isn't a regular menu item but it was made in honor of the co-owners birthday. Maybe they'll bring it back because it was soooooo good Parking- There was street parking that should suffice.
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
Super cute neighborhood coffee shop with amazing croissants and coffees. I got the bunna coffee flight which was 3 of their signature lattes. Cinnamon forward and I really enjoyed the ruby red dirty matcha as well. Ample space for hunkering down to get work done along with comfy couches and fast internet. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
Honestly mad at myself for discovering this space and coffee shop this late! This is such a gem!! From workspace to event space to amazing coffee and ambience, this is the spot for everyone! The service is efficient and super friendly. I could see myself hosting a party here, hanging out with friends or getting some serious work done. On a side note I fit the lavender matcha and it was 10/10! I'll sure be come back here!!
google avatar

Kortney C.

Yelp
4 - only because they're new. They have so much potential & room to grow! My barista, Soul was super helpful with the recommendations and welcoming. Of course, the ambiance is nice. I felt instantly at home. I love that the business doubles as an event space. Open mic night anyone? My drink was great, but my pastry seemed old/hard. I will definitely be back for events and an iced latte.

Yelp
Kefita Coffee was a good experience for coffee flights! Good customer service and interior is spacious area we found seats and it wasn't too loud inside.

Ryan Finkelstein ..

Yelp
It's 9:30 on a Thursday- probably not Kefita's peak hours- but you can hear patrons laughing and chatting peacefully over hip, relaxing beats. Upstairs, a couple works on their computers, padding away productively at the keys of laptops. Maybe it's because I'm five months pregnant, but the Forward Times article Kefita has left on an ottoman upstairs brings a tear to my eye. There's a beautiful story of Ethiopian culture, family, community, and inclusivity woven into the fabric of Kefita (and you can feel that atmosphere in the re-imagined midtown two-story). Beyond the ambiance, I will have to come back for more snacks later... the chorizo/potato breakfast taco on a warm, thick pita-type bread hits the spot. The blueberry/marshmallow iced latte is refreshing and one of the better lattes I have had in recent days. Overall, Kefita has great coffee, and a palpable, peaceful spirit. A great place for relaxing, co-working, sharing time with the community, or just because.

Yelp
Such a cute fun spot. Plenty of outdoor space to enjoy the day inside is bright , cheery and clean. The staff is amazing and very warm and welcoming. The coffee is excellent. They had a pop-up Baker. @la.crumb and she had an amazing assortment of items. In addition to Coffee they offered best tacos and have a case of baked goods that they provide. I highly recommend.
google avatar

Liz N.

Yelp
A great spot to grab coffee in the downtown area! I wasn't sure what to get, so I decided on the Addis latte which was a brown sugar and vanilla latte. It was delish! I got it iced and I would def like to go back and stay a little longer versus taking the drinks to go. Employees were nice. Love finding all these new coffee shops!
google avatar

Helia F.

Yelp
This is where coffee meets culture at home. The experience we had at this hidden palace is one to be spoken of during a coffee ceremony and not one just in passing. This is not a drive thru coffee fix. This is where you want to share ways in which you want to make the world a better place while sipping the warmth of the fruit of the tree of knowledge.

A J.

Yelp
Beautiful cafe with great drinks and well curated menu. The owners are super sweet! Greattt vibes inside, tons of seating. One of the owners mentioned they do a coffee ceremony once a month will def have to come back!
google avatar

Kori W.

Yelp
Delicious and smooth coffee. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly and very pleasant. The Coffee house has several different seating areas inside and outside and is very comfortable. Would highly recommend and plan to return.
google avatar

Roxy S.

Yelp
My friend and I came here because we have enjoyed Ethiopian coffee before. We decided to try the 3 drink flight and we really enjoyed it! This is a twist on Ethiopian coffee, where the traditional spices and flavors are actually syrups used to make espresso based lattes. I wasn't super interested in the cinnamon honey latte but I was pleasantly surprised that it was actually my favorite! This shop is in a large building with a ton of space, couches, books, and little board games. The area is walkable and on a nice day they have balconies and outside seating

Celeste Green ..

Yelp
The food and coffee are subpar at best. The guy working was nice but I do recommend and wont be coming back.
google avatar

Lisa P.

Yelp
I'm biased, I love Ruby. And Kefita. I'm sad, I don't live nearby and don't get there as much as I'd like to. I've had a chai and a famous (Mom's) coffee and a savory treat and I'd order them all again and again since they're that good! I'm just simply familiar with the place so I recommend you go feel at home with them. Food Service Ambiance are all needed for returning repeatedly, and it's there.

Mia O.

Yelp
super yummy matcha! unique flavors you won't find anywhere else! on the pricier side and difficulties with parking but well worth the cute aesthetic and homey vibes
google avatar

Bailey F.

Yelp
The best coffee in Houston for sure! We got the Cortado and cappuccino and loved them so much. The almond croissant was also amazing!
google avatar

Ann S.

Yelp
It's a cool spot for coffee - A 2 story house that has been converted into a multi-purpose space from the looks of it. It seems like they will start having live music from time to time as there is a small stage downstairs. There's a full kitchen and photo shoot room upstairs with different kinds of seating on both floors inside and outside. It was barely busy on this Tuesday afternoon. I tried their coffee latte with no syrup and only turbinado sugar and it was good. You can taste the coffee and it isn't bitter. The barista was really nice and easy to talk to. They have free water available. The wifi speed is fast. Had no issue with streaming Spotify and browsing the Web. Background music is played downstairs only. I'm assuming it's African-owned. As a Nigerian American, I liked the African paintings and decor.

Elle S.

Yelp
Good baristas & relaxed, home atmosphere. We enjoyed our mini-Bundt cake (tried the carrot cake & lemon) with an oat milk latte. The latte was mild however, probably good it wasn't super strong past noon. Happy 1st year cheers to another good year.

Bevin B.

Yelp
Great ambience with a lot of creative that frequent the spot. I always get the chorizo breakfast taco, sambusa, and addis Latte with oat milk (good iced or hot) Upstairs is my favorite. You feel like you're in a living room! Sol is amazing!!!!!!

Brooklyn T.

Yelp
Absolutely love this coffee shop. It's very vibey and cozy in a two-story house with cute seating nooks. Friendly staff and yummy coffee
google avatar

Jana T.

Yelp
I absolutely LOVE Kefita Coffee! The coffee & food are incredible, and Ruby & Sol are truly the best. The vibe is super chill yet so inviting, it's my go-to spot. I'm there almost every day! Oh, and do yourself a favor: GET THE SAMBUSAS!!
google avatar

Jasmine Y.

Yelp
The vibe of this coffee shop is calming and relaxing. The staff is friendly and makes the coffee very well. This is also a good place to have a meeting or coworking. They have a walk up, an outdoor space and indoor seating. Parking is offered on both sides of the street in front of the building and in the neighborhood. Make sure you visit soon!

Iyanda S.

Yelp
Honestly, I should just move in at this point. This is where I work throughout the week. Love the shared working spaces. The vibe is immaculate, the culture is honorably represented and the food/drink is top tier. I love walking into the door and being met with such vibrant energy from Ruby and Sol. Everyone is welcomed with such love and attentiveness, making it immediately feel like home. If you're ever in a rush, use the walk up window or order online. My recommendations: Thursday's Addis Latte + Sambusa special Abyssinia Latte with Oat milk Iced Matcha Latte with Lavender + Chorizo Breakfast Taco Hibiscus Lemonade

Oluwasade O.

Yelp
Kefita Coffee is hands down one of my favorite spots in Houston, TX. Ruby and the entire family create such a warm and welcoming atmosphere--it truly feels like home. If you're searching for a coffee shop that offers not just great coffee but also a beautiful, life-giving experience, Kefita Coffee is the place to be. Plus, it's the creative haven I've always dreamed of finding in a coffee shop.
