Ken’s Fish Bar - Review - Dulwich - London - The Infatuation

"Wander up to Ken’s Fish Bar, day or night, and you should expect a wait. Not just because the cash-only chippy in Dulwich is immensely popular, but because at Ken’s, every piece of fish is fried fresh. Expect to see locals wander in, give a nod, and order ‘the usual’. They leave smiling with steaming packages, while van drivers outside have mounted the curb to inhale scampi in the front seat. The result of the fresh fry is excellent: bronzed and jagged slabs, with still-moist fish inside the batter. It’s not always the case elsewhere, but Ken’s is worth the wait." - Jake Missing

Where to Eat in London This Weekend | London Restaurant Recommendations | Eater London

"A compact, long-running fish-and-chip shop where the proprietor’s 36 years of frying show in crisply executed fish and perfectly judged chips; diners are encouraged to request a freshly fried piece rather than whatever sits in the heated cabinet. The tiny ante-chamber is decorated obsessively with fish motifs (84 in total) and multiple framed reviews, and the house chips are deliberately just under-fried so the smaller pieces at the bottom of the cone darken into golden, oily shards that pair almost seamlessly with the battered fish — a simple, expertly delivered comfort-food experience." - Feroz Gajia

I last came here four or five years ago… standards have not fallen. Delicious food, as you can see from the photo I was keeping the best bit for last. I was at home thinking I could eat some fish and chips but in my area the quality is lacking. I’m glad I drove from my home in Beckenham, well worth the drive. In case your wondering, my wife and I brought knives and forks, trays, serviettes and condiments and ate the fresh hot food in the car.😂😂. DUBLXX

Google
Hands down an amazing place for fish and chips. I took a train down from London just to visit them for a nice piece of cod with chips. Massive portions, freshest fish and definitely generous servings of chips. I struggled to finish my bag. A true gem!

Ordered the regular cod and chips with mushy peas. Fish was fresh-ish, decent white flakes inside and the batter was crispy in places, though a bit greasy and soggy towards the bottom of the box. Chips were proper chip-shop chips — thick-cut and soft inside — but could have done with another minute in the fryer. Mushy peas were standard, nothing special. Service was quick and no-nonsense: order, pay, wait three minutes, done. Staff were polite enough, didn’t chat much but got everything right. Price is about what you’d expect (£9.50 for regular cod & chips). Not the best fish and chips I’ve ever had, not the worst either. If you’re nearby and fancy a quick portion, it’s perfectly fine. I’d come back if I was passing, but I wouldn’t go out of my way. Just your average chippy, really.

Best chip shop I've ever visited. Hadn't been here for 17 years until today. I was curious to see if Ken's was still as good as when I regularly visited back in the 2000s. The chips were absolutely brilliant, just as I remembered them. Place has had a refurb since 2008 and Ken has sadly passed away, there's a photograph of him on the wall. Only had chips, as it was lunchtime and I was pleased to see that vegetarian options are available now. I only had chips though as they are filling enough for me at midday. Ken's is still the best in London, or indeed anywhere!

Google
Took me an hour to travel there via public transport. It’s a nice little family owned place. Fish and chips were freshly fried and fresh. It was nice to get a break from the crowded touristy areas selling fish and chips for sure! Remember to bring cash though as they do not accept cashless payments. They do not provide tartar sauce (additional purchase at 1.50 pounds) or ketchup sauce sadly

Google
Cod and chips was pretty nice. The fish was definitely better than the chips - crisp outside and tender inside. The chips were a bit oily and not as crunchy as I like. The tartare sauce was pretty average - tasted more like mayo and was a bit sour. Overall this is pretty good quality for London

Yelp
We went here on the recommendation of let's feed Phil, but we're not as happy as he was with the meal. The good is the fish was the biggest piece of fish I've ever seen in my life. It was beautifully fried. The gherkin pickles were delicious bread and butter, whole pickles and I loved the onion vinegar. The vinegar was not what I was used to which is usually malt vinegar, but it was delicious. The bad we also had the fried shrimp that I wouldn't recommend them either. They were small and had more crust than shrimp. We did not care for the fact that the skin was left on & the chips were undercooked.

Yelp
This place must have really gone downhill since Phil's show was here. Oily and bland. I'm sorry we went way out of our way to go here.

Yelp
First...BRING CASH...Ken doesn't have a card reader. Second...THEY ARE CLOSED STARTING AUGUST 1st 2022 for cleaning and vacation. Third...nice folks, but average fish & chips. Nothing special or elevated about Ken's, so lower your expectations

Yelp
Really disappointed today. As a regular customer, ordered 2x cod and large chips and both were substandard today. Cod was very small and so was the chips which was not at all large. Wondering if this is due to holiday cover as normally rhe place is very well served

Yelp
We went there because it was featured on Somebody Feed Phil, but fish is fresh and delicious. The owners/workers are hard working and super cool and friendly. A must stop.

Yelp
Best fish in chip in london! Ever since phil reviewed it on netflix been a bit more difficult to just stop by and say hi to ken but luckily my father in law has known ken for over 20 years and has his number, cod is always amazing with nice crispy exterior fall apart fish on the inside cooked to perfection and don't leave without some malted and salted chips. Being American i always get the side of tartar which goes amazingly well with the fish and if you mix a lil ketchup with it even better for the chips!

Yelp
Ken's is the best fish and chips takeaway in South London, possibly all London! Beats the pants off the award-winning Olly's, which is nearer Brockwell Park, because the chips are so good. Yummy.

Carol B.

Yelp
Love Ken's best Fish and Chips in the area, lovely fresh fish cooked fresh for you, beautiful fluffy chips, can't be beat , not even by Olly's.
