I was in Austin with my family - our first trip since the pandemic and the first ever trip of the youngest member of the family... who also has a slew of food allergies. We were meeting up with some friends in town and they suggested this location since we had tickets for Thinkery just down the street.
The entire area seems to be under some kind of construction. In fact, it's all new. A lot of shops/businesses. We found parking in a garage around the block, which offers free parking with a validated ticket. The place seemed pretty clean and had a comfortable, laid back atmosphere.
It was on Wednesday morning at around 10 am. They already had some tables filled and a steady trickle of customers. I'm somewhat familiar with Kerbey Lane from back in my uni days, but my diet has become a little more restrictive so I don't base it on memories since I can't have anything I used to order. I MISS MIGAS.
I digress.
We're all no allium vegetarians, with 2 members of the party who have food allergies on top of that. Littlest one (19 months) is allergic to wheat, peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, avocado, and kiwi, which we informed our waiter at the time of ordering.
I got the same thing one of our friends got - BISCUITS AND GRAVY. HOW we can have biscuits and gravy that I don't make myself, I don't know, but I got it. No regrets! Delicious, buttery biscuits with white gravy. Yum!
OATMEAL COMBO with gluten free toast - in hopes of the littlest one eating some. He didn't. He was teething again. Tasted pretty good!
MAC-N-CHEESE (KIDS) with a side of fruit for the picky 5 year old who prefers boxed Annie's Mac and cheese. Strange tastebuds. She did eat a few spoons of the Mac and one grape. Neither kid was into the cantaloupe/honey dew that was included. I ate the leftovers later and that Mac is DELICIOUS. You don't have to be a kid to order from the kid's menu... I think I know what I'm getting for myself next time!
GLUTEN-FREE PANCAKES (it's me just one but it's a HUGE) as another option for the Littlest. Again, it was a no go for him. We were pretty full by then so most of that was taken home. Not bad. A little on the grainy side, like most GF foods, but with some butter and syrup, it's easily overlooked.
Well, I finally let the Littlest nibble on a pea-sized piece of the pancake when we got home and he had an allergic reaction that required an EpiPen! I messaged Kerbey Lane who asked for my contact information so the manager of this location could contact me directly with answers, just so I knew what caused it. Scott called me within 25 minutes and was very transparent, saying he often preferred speaking to customers with food allergies. They have vegan pancakes and GF pancakes BUT no vegan, GF pancakes. Their gluten-free pancakes contain eggs. He said he would talk to the staff that were working that day to ensure it wouldn't happen again.
Overall, a decent experience and great customer service in lieu of the mistake in regards to food being served to those with food allergies. Eating out always has a slight possibility of cross contamination, etc. Hopefully, the staff will be better trained for future visits. Originally 3 stars but bumped up to 4 for the prompt responsiveness from management.
