Best Restaurants on South First in Austin | Eater Austin

"This Asian-ish trailer offers two ways to enjoy rich chocolate. There are bars both classic like varying percentages of dark chocolate and fun with flavors such as black sesame and boba. Then there’s equally as great gelatos. Takeout orders can be placed in person; there are outdoor dine-in areas." - Nadia Chaudhury

Kesshō - Review - South Austin - Austin - The Infatuation

"Kesshō is an ice cream truck in South Austin, close to Oltorf and South First Street, selling “Asian-inspired” flavors of gelato, including ube, hojicha, and “boba tea.” The same team also runs a chocolate operation, selling single-origin chocolate bars in a variety of flavors." - Nicolai McCrary

Google
First time to Austin. I am so glad I visited kessho. I've always been a traditionalist when it comes to peanut butter cups. I branched out today with no regrets. I also tried the mulled wine 74%. It's got infused cacao nibs. There' a subtle soft taste of berry as it melts in your mouth. Awesome! I gave a few others I'm going to bring back but I have a feeling this is going to be my favorite. Come for the chocolate. You won't regret it. Enjoy it while taking a stroll along 1st. Been all over on scooters and this area south of the city is my favorite part. You have to walk across the river from the city but there are scooters on the other side.

I love, love, love how creative they are with their flavors, asian flavors all around. My favorite is the black sesame flavor. They also sell chocolate bars, the most interesting flavor i tasted was their goat or lamb (idk remember which it is) chocolate, it’s like eating meat, but it’s sweet, oh and there’s cumin in it too, like i said interesting. Overall, great place.

Absolutely amazing! I stopped by Kesshō for the first time and was blown away by the quality and flavor of their ice cream and chocolate. You can tell everything is crafted with care — rich, smooth textures and unique flavors like yuzu and matcha that you won’t find anywhere else. The lady was super friendly and knowledgeable, happy to answer questions about ingredients. The space is modern and welcoming too. Whether you’re a chocolate lover or just want a perfect scoop of artisan ice cream, Kesshō is a must-visit in Austin!

The guava lime sorbet was absolutely wonderful. The plum jam swirl wasn’t too sweet and had a ton of flavor. Jasmin helped me and let me try samples of a couple of their cookie flavors. I live about 25 minutes south but will for sure Be back absolutely delightful experience super yummy and super kind people!

Google
THE best tasting ice cream place with unique flavors I’ve ever had. We had the Mango Sticky Rice, you can taste the mango, the coconut, AND the rice. And it was sticky. It was AMAZING! Next was the Lychee Rose Raspberry, which was also very fragrant and very very good. Next up was their award winning chocolate. Hojicha white chocolate was creamy and nutty (like roasted matcha should be). This place is awesome, and is my current favorite ice cream place.

Shout out to Taylor! The matcha flavor is unique not only in Austin but the whole US! The black sesame is also good! I love both locations!

Google
I never rate places but this was so good I just had to! They let us try so many flavors and they were all soooo good. I highly recommend the watermelon yuzu and mango sticky rice flavor - super refreshing for the summer!!

Google
Amazing gelato and dessert, my favorites was the Lychee which has the sweet and sour burst from the fruit bits of but ends with a smooth creamy finish. and the Ube which is a beautuful purple and is rich and nutty. I ended up buying 3 pints be cause I didn't know which one to get. The black sesame is very buttery, ends with pieces of black sesame chocolate that you can savor since it melts well after the ice cream portion. the matcha uses ceremonial grade from Kyoto so it makes a huge difference vs other matcha gelatao / ice creams

Yelp
This is the best hidden gem in austin! It serves Asian flavors of Gelato out of a truck on first street. Every time I drive by, the lot is pretty empty but now this place will happily tempt me. I got a small cup of two flavors for $4.50. I picked sticky mango rice (love the bits of rice and sweet mango and coconut rice flavor, incredibly complex and rich), and lychee rose raspberry (had chunks of real lychee). I licked the cup clean, that's how good it was.

Yelp
A little food truck in the South of Austin. I arrived when it was just open, so the staff was still setting up things outside. I ordered mango sticky rice ice cream, 2 black sesame cookies, and a sesame Reese's cup candy. The cookies were chewy and soft, and you could taste the sesame in them. I would definitely get this again. A few days later, I opened the sesame cup, and that was great as well, but I think the cookies were the best out of the two. The mango sticky rice was good and had a great mango flavor, and the rice had a nice coconut flavor too. The food truck has other food trucks around it too, so you can explore other things there before getting dessert. There is a small parking lot for it, and if that is full, there is curb parking on the side of the road.

Yelp
A perfect treat on a hot summer day. I ended up getting a large three scoops of mango sticky rice, sesame butter cup, and ube horchata! My favorite was mango sticky rice and my husband's was the sesame butter cup. I'll be back :)

Yelp
I was trying to find places to try out the night before I flew into Austin and I came across this cute shop via social media and from the pictures/flavors made, I made sure to have enough time to visit. The experience and the taste of the items I got were above my expectations. Everything I tried was soooo good! Nothing was overly sweet, and you can tell that the ingredients used were real, ie. The sakura cheesecake actually did have sakura flavor in it, and the ube used real yam The server was patiently taking my order and was super sweet and kind, and gave me details on everything I sampled. I love her so much!! When I visit again, I will definitely come back!! This place will forever have a special place in my heart

Yelp
I brought my boyfriend here to try out this Asian gelato food truck spot! They also have other desserts too. We were honestly blown away by how delicious each of the flavors were because you can tell they use real ingredients. The matcha rocky road has ceremonial grade matcha, and my boyfriend was shocked immediately by how he could tell it was real matcha. It was a really rich and delicious flavor. We also enjoyed the ube horchata, and they most definitely use real ube in the gelato. You can taste the chunks. The last flavor we tried was the sakura. It was good, but it was a bit too overpowering and flower-y for us. It felt like you were eating a flower, but not necessarily in a good way. I do think their ice cream is incredibly solid, and the texture is incredible! I want to try their mango sticky rice next.

Yelp
Crying because I wish Kessho was closer to me! I stumbled across this food truck after dinner and I'm so glad to found this gem. They have asian flavored ice creams and sorbet. I got the lychee rose one and regret not buying a pint of it!!! They also sell award winning chocolate, I highly recommend the Hojica flavor, it's won the most awards. I'll be back to try more flavors of both their ice cream and chocolate soon

Yelp
Cute ice cream truck with cool flavors. Liked the mango and black sesame flavors, and they also sell chocolate bars as well! The ice cream was on the creamier end which is nice.

Yelp
Wanted a treat on Halloween and decided to try this place as we haven't ever before. Selection was mediocre but maybe a decent amount for a food truck. The flavors were definitely adventurous - black sesame, matcha and a pumpkin cheesecake for the season. Some staple flavors as well, vanilla, chocolate. The gelato itself was not consistent in its texture - we got a medium (2 flavors) coconut and the pumpkin cheesecake. The coconut was smooth, creamy, stretchy - more like what a gelato texture should be. The pumpkin cheesecake flavor was a decent taste but the texture was weird and crumbly. Overall, it's a miss for us. Not worth the price or drive but if you're in the area then maybe?

Yelp
Kessho is known for their chocolate. At their food truck location, they've taken the opportunity to offer additional dessert items, such as gelato and various baked goods. Despite their other offerings, I contend that their chocolate bars are where it's at. At around $10 a bar, their bars are done extremely well. It is difficult to savor a piece without wanting more, since as their chocolate dissolves in your mouth, you can taste the intended flavors pleasantly lingering around before they gradually disappear, leaving you yearning for just a bit more. You can get them at the food truck, and also at various supermarkets around town. During this visit, we opted for some strawberry and black sesame gelato. The strawberry flavors and seeds clearly came through, though this seems more sorbet like than gelato. The black sesame contained black sesame, but was also embedded with chunks reminiscent of cookie dough. We also grabbed a lychee rose chocolate bar which we hadn't yet tried before. The box will be added to the water-color inspired collection. Seating is ample and pretty much unshaded at the center of several food trucks. There is a tiny gravel lot on the property, otherwise street parking can be found close by. Expect relatively standard, relatively quick food truck interactions when ordering.

Yelp
I was invited here by the owner for a visit and was very grateful for her taking the time to visit with me and make sure my experience was top tier. The attention to detail and the passion they put into every aspect, from packaging to flavor, is truly inspiring. Their packaging, designed by talented Asian watercolorists, adds an extra touch of artistry to their products. (I swear I would hang the chocolate wrapper up as art!) Their Asian-inspired flavors, such as lychee rose, pandan coconut, and ube, are not only delicious but also refreshing--perfect for summer. Additionally, their scratch-made baked goods, like cookies, are incorporated into their flavors, like cookies and cream (most popular flavor). They've recently added "toppings" to their menu, allowing you to enhance any flavor with their homemade cookies or pecans. Plus, you can even order ice cream sandwiches! Go treat yourself and support local! (For parking: super easy! they have a lot!)

Cute little food truck with lots of unique flavors to pick from! Parking may be difficult during the weekends.

Yelp
A MUST VISIT for all chocolate lovers! The sweetest owners, Liang & Mark, started with a bakery in Beijing before becoming Austin-based craft chocolate creators Our dessert spread -- *salted plum chocolate *boba tea chocolate lamb skewer chocolate *milk tea gelato with boba topping black sesame gelato *black sesame cookie The *s really blew me away! The milk tea gelato with boba topping was so unique but also makes you wonder why you haven't had that before! My favorite item was the black sesame cookie -- LOVED the nuttiness & decadence with white chocolate. Kessho chocolates are also something else! Yuzu, hojicha, and boba are award-winning. I personally LOVED the salted plum & boba! Can't wait to try some of the other flavors as well :) My husband really enjoyed the savory lamb skewer flavor -- an interesting combination of cumin, goat milk, and chili peppers for some heat. Although not my top pick, I surprisingly liked it more than I thought I would and LOVE the owners' creativity! They have 2 food trucks in South Austin but the chocolates are sold at a few grocers as well TLDR: if you love chocolate and Asian-inspired desserts, this is your spot!

Yelp
Pretty good gelato! They do have flavors that you wouldn't commonly see-ube, black sesame. Wanted to get ube but they were running out (it was the end of the day). We ended with Mango (vegan), black sesame, and vanilla choc chip, which reminds me of cookies 'n cream. $6.50 for three scoops. (I forgot to update on Yelp. tried this in March 2024)

Yelp
Stopped here yesterday to try some of their gelato and pastries after trying their chocolate at a tasting earlier in the week. We got the ube gelato, hojicha gelato, and a black sesame cookie. The cookie was a nice light sweetness and the texture was perfect! A little crumbly but in the best way. The gelatos were equally delicious and they have a pretty small cup option which is great if you were wanting to try a bunch of different flavors! The truck itself is in a food truck park with a bunch of other trucks, there is a small parking lot and plenty of seating. The service was a little eh but not sure if the guy that was there was just having an off day or not. Would definitely come again if I am in the area!

Yelp
This gelato place was recommended to me and I was in the area so I figured I'd give it a try. It's definitely one of the better gelato places in Austin. The texture is nice and the flavors are solid. They're open pretty late and the server was nice! It's in a food truck park and there's street parking. They had other flavors that looked good too!

Yelp
The gelato at this place knocked my socks off. I love that there were so many unique flavors. I sampled the sweet corn, ube, rice wine, 70% dark chocolate, 90% dark chocolate, and mango gelatos--all of which I would be very happy to eat again. I decided on the ube and 70% chocolate, and my friends got the sweet corn, rice wine, and mango. I loved that the ube had tons of little pieces of actual ube dotted throughout each bite, and it had that really unique, slightly floral taste that's also somehow reminiscent of an oreo shake. It was such a good match with the 70% dark chocolate, which was lusciously creamy and rich. I also bought a chocolate chip cookie, which was slightly disappointing. It had kind of a dough-y flour taste to it. Not bad, but not nearly as amazing as the brownies my friends let me try a taste of. They bought the regular and mochi brownies, and I honestly can't say which was better, so just buy both if you want some fudgy, chewy awesomeness :) The offerings at Kessho are decadent in the best way, and the service was incredibly friendly. They're happy to answer questions, and the food definitely reflects their love of good ingredients!

Yelp
We are from Italy and I can tell you that this is the first time we've tried an American Gelato that is this great. flavors are spot on, consistency is amazing and lychee rose flavor is amazing! By far the best gelato we've tested in over 10 states already. Amazing job!

Yelp
Black sesame gelato was incredible, matcha cookie divine, black raspberry chocolate unreal!

Yelp
I got to experience Kessho at a yelp live event, supporting a local charity. They gave away samples of chocolate bars and pastries and I walked out with Black Sesame and Boba Tea chocolate bars I bought as stocking stuffers.

Yelp
Austin needs more dessert options. Glad to see this food truck pop up with an Asian influenced menu that serves Gelato wjth in unique flavors like 90% cacao & ube, has cookies and chocolate bars. Perfect for something right now, a little later and tomorrow. Definitely worth a visit if you have a sweet tooth in your body.

Claudia M.

Yelp
At their new location on Burnet. Friendly service and amazing Gelato. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
I think the gelato may be made with coconut milk? I tried to search on this in reviews but cannot find an answer. It certainly tasted like this to my husband & me. It was good - but we bother agreed: only if you like less sweet, lighter tasting gelato/ice cream... almost fluffy. It's not the rich taste you may expect. So just we aware, but I think they do a good job to deliver if that's what you like. The ube (purple sweet potato) is also the best flavor, in both our opinion, after sampling a lot of different flavors.

Kat C.

Yelp
Really interesting flavors and textures. The black sesame was gritty and nutty, which I really liked. The matcha was strong and deep, more flavored than others I've had before. Not sure if it's because we went later in the day (closer to closing) but the matcha was just a little icy. Taste testing was available and service was super nice. It is a food truck so some seating is available in the area.

Aubrey S.

Yelp
Friendly staff. Delicious gelato. I got the ube and boba tea flavors. My gf got the sesame cone with chocolate. All yummy and super affordable. This hit my sweet tooth in the right area. If you're around, stop by and check them out .

Yelp
Yummy chocolates with original, creative flavors! I appreciate the sustainable sourcing and I recommend the black sesame cups.

Yelp
The ice cream was amazing here especially if you are a chocolate lover. They are open limited hours, but so worth it. The food truck park is right off south first and there are spaces in the park as well as into the neighborhood. Definitely recommend this for a weekend treat!
