"Acclaimed chef/owner Khai Duong’s upscale Modern Vietnamese restaurant in the Design District. The petite dining room is a bit eccentric, with its daytime takeaway counter mostly obscured by curtains. Still, you’ll get a lot of face time with the chef, who’s an active presence and a great character. A $115 per person, multi-course tasting menu is on offer over two nightly seatings. Currently on the menu are dishes like local sweet Dungeness crab soup with handcrafted noodles; seared rare beef with fresh plantains; and pineapple ravioli filled with durian custard for dessert." - The MICHELIN Guide

If you are looking for an exceptional 10 course meal at a reasonable price, this is the place for you! Although it is listed as a Vietnamese restaurant, the food is a combination of Vietnamese dishes with more familiar dishes, such as black cod, squab and lamb loin, that have a slight Vietnamese flavor. A great combination of unique dishes and familiar dishes. Without giving away all the secrets, the meal starts with a unique Vietnamese salad with a bright and flavorful vinaigrette dressing. The second course is an appetizer centered around a mild mushroom mousse and chips served on a coral piece. Very attractive. The next few dishes are also appetizers, a crab sausage, then salmon ceviche and then steak tartare. So far, six dishes and we are not even to the main courses. There were three main courses, grilled black cod, followed by a squab leg, followed by a lamb loin. All three mains were like you would have at any tasting menu, with a slight Vietnamese spin. Then we relaxed for a few minutes for the dessert, which was a light, creamy fruit filled roll with mint and dollops of raspberry sauce. And the tea at the end was flavorful and cleansing. In summary, this restaurant focuses on the food. If you like tasting menu's, this is a great place at a great value, with a great chef.

10 courses made by one of the most respected Vietnamese chefs. Every single dish is delicious, creative, and full of Vietnamese flavor. Friendly staff. Highly recommend.

I feel that this is one of those underrated restaurants in San Francisco. While the space is atypical, the food and service make up for it. There isn't any menu to peruse or any selection one can make on food, rather the chef reserves his right to surprise you. Every dish we were served was prepared with great care and presented in a classy easy. I personally enjoyed every bite with the exception of the Dorian dessert which I didn't love. I'm just not a Dorian person. Overall a great experience. It's a bit weird that you see how much you pay only at the end but I guess one is prepared to pay more than $100 when going to a place like this one. Worth the price we paid which was around $150 each.

Take what you know about Vietnamese food and throw it out the window, this is Vietnamese food like you've never experienced before. What an unbelievable experience. Internationally acclaimed Chef Khai will 'wow' you with this intimate dining experience. There is an obsessive mindfulness that is clearly communicated through the courses from start to finish. The blend of flavors, textures, and regional ingredients are so elegant and intelligent. There are both vegetarian and non-vegetarian tasting menus that you must try. I highly recommend Khai. One of the best dinners I've had - ever.

This place is ok. I feel like you can get much better service and food for the $95 per tasting menu. I liked the Vietnamese cuisine but the prices are way too high for the quality of food & the service is trying but they are really just sloppy. Spilled my champagne when pouring it in my glass and cutlery wasn't replaced with each course, didn't pour the wine accordingly nor refill waters. Handling of champagne bottle sloppy too. You just don't touch the top of the bottle with your palm. I could go on. The excellent service is the one you don't notice at all. Makes me miss France.

The chef makes delicious food and is a darling! Like idiots we had not given him notice that I am a vegetarian but he still managed to pull a full 10 course meal for me on such a short notice. I suggest telling him in advance though. He explains each dish with a lot of love and tells u how to eat it to enjoy the flavour.

For a hi end Vietnamese restaurant, it is lacking of any decor. It shares the same space with a pastry shop .The pastry shop operate in the day time and Khai operates in the evenings.I sat and was looking all evening during my chef tasting menu dinner at a large, almost floor to ceiling black curtain covering up the other side of the room. Not sure if it was hiding the pastry shop's cabinet /counter. Some choices of the chef tasting menu were good. Some were ordinary..just a mix performance. I expected better from Chef Khai.

Khai is a gem that hasn't been found by most! Came here for an anniversary dinner and Chef Khai floored us with his culinary nuances. My wife is a vegetarian and he took so much care to make sure she had a great time. He gave it a personal touch and came out with every dish to explain it to us. The wine pairings complemented the food extremely well. Cannot wait to go back with friends and family. If you haven't tried Khai yet, don't waste another minute. Get a reservation already!
