Some Indian American Restaurants Are Beginning to Embrace Beef - Eater Chicago

"Khan BBQ, a local Pakistani restaurant in Chicago, has served frontier beef and other beef options like chapli kebab for more than two decades along Devon, Chicago’s main South Asian hub." - Ashok Selvam

Chicago’s Best Indian and Pakistani Restaurants | Eater Chicago

"No, you won’t find meats slathered in sauce at this Pakistani spot. But it’s a rare opportunity to find beef (Frontier beef) spiced the South Asian way. Don’t sleep on the biryani, and mind the house rules, which are posted on the open/closed sign. Also, if you’ve ever wanted to try goat, this is the best place on Devon to sample the meat with several selections." - Ashok Selvam

Beloved for frontier chicken, beef seekh, and goat chops fired in a tandoor you can see from your table. Frequently highlighted by Eater Chicago and Time Out, Khan’s no-frills setting keeps focus on the spice, smoke, and neighborhood bustle.

The food was excellent with so many flavors, the chicken we had was spicy but I’m sure you can ask for it without the spicy sauce. The lentils and spinach were so tasty and it was the best naan I’ve had anywhere. The waiter was kind and helpful with helping us pick our dishes. The inside of the restaurant is spacious and clean. Bring the family or friends.

Very good and flavorful! I got the frontier chicken rice and boti chicken and garlic naan

Google
We got tandoori chicken, malai boti, chicken biryani, beef chapli kabob, chicken seekh, daal fry, qeema and aloo paratha with garlic naan. Overall good food and it was made fresh. Daal fry was by far the most delicious from what we had, followed by aloo paratha and chicken biryani. I was hoping the grill items would be great but there were OK. Chapli kabob was dry and a bit overcooked. How about some butter on that garlic naan! Overall good service and experience and we will be going back. The place can use some renovations.

Very yummy food ! They are very nice people. Even we were late due to traffic ...they made our order...we dine in even it was closing time. So cooperative! Highly recommended

Google
Really disappointed so bad taste. I ordered 3 beef boti roll and instead they gave me chicken roll and they make it like so bad, worst experience ever.

Google
My family and I have been going here for 15 years. We love the tandoori chicken, steamed chicken, and just anything from the grill section! The naan is perfect, both soft and crispy. Recently, we tried the haleem and nihari, and both are amazing as well. The goat biryani is my dad’s favorite. Overall, this restaurant is very good, although pricey, the quality of food is definitely worth it. One of our favorite restaurants in Devon!

Recently We went there to have dinner. We ordered chicken tikka masala, chicken seekh kabab, beef bihari kabab, and naan. The bihari kabab was good. I also liked the tikka masala. But the seek kabab was not upto the mark. It tasted more like egg than chicken. The naans were okay. The service was horrible. We were a group of seven. Some of us went early and were waiting for the others. The others took about 10 mins. At this time, three waiters came three to four times to tell us to order now, even though we told them we had more guests arriving. When ordering, the waiter asked multiple times if these were what we wanted. Do we want more? Because the kitchen will be closed. Even though we said that was enough for us, they were asking and insisting on ordering more. Finally, we didn't even finish eating, the waiter came and told us to pay. I had to pay in the middle of my dinner. The service was really poor. The price of the food is higher compared to the taste.

Yelp
Reasonably priced and tasty food. It would be great if they could provide delivery through DoorDash or Grubhub-like apps.

Yelp
Stopped by for lunch. It's been a tradition now to stop and have some bbq at Khan BBQ whenever in Chicago. We were there right when they opened so no crowd. We were seated right away in the inside hall. The place was clean and the staff were very attentive. We tried something different this time. Ordered the beef chapli kabob and the frontier chicken roll. With a couple of naans. The food came out relatively quick. It was very hot and fresh. They had a couple of condiments on the table. Tamarind chutney and mint chutney. The kabob was very well spiced and cooked perfectly. It was more on the hot side from a spice level but tasty. A little drier than I would have liked but very enjoyable with the tamarind sauce. The frontier chicken roll was very good. The paratha for the roll was soft, the chicken was spiced perfectly with small pieces that were not dry at all. The flavors the freshness and the taste was spot on. Would definitely do that again. Overall it was a good dining experience as usual. Will be coming back here and keeping the tradition alive.

Yelp
It's a good restaurant for someone who is a hardcore barbecue lover; chefs make fresh barbecue. No microwave concept. Everything is made right in the front of your eyes. I recommend just barbecue. Service is average. Don't expect five star serving experience. Just enjoy barbecue and step out.

Yelp
W restaurant. Beautiful cuisine, great service, nice Pakistani joint. Looks a bit hole in the wall, but isn't bad at all. Great prices incredible food

Yelp
I think this is one of the best Pakistani restaurants in Chicago, which is a hidden gem for good Biryani and fresh barbecue made in front of your eyes. when you have such a big player like Sabri nihari, anmol, bundhoo khan this restaurant stands out as a crown for good fresh food except server service. The management has to really work very hard on the service and ambience/atmosphere . If they can improve at the server level i think they can hit big players, I am pretty much sure they can go far long way. They make biryani fresh only on weekends. It's not available on weekdays and I wouldn't recommend any curry item. Just go for the fresh barbecue on any day

Yelp
I've visited Devon many times growing up but never tried Khan BBQ. I went on Eid day and I honestly was decently surprised by the food. The chicken seekh was my favorite out of everything we ordered (and I am usually not a seekh fan). We also ordered lassis, the goat karhai, beef Bihari kabobs, and an aloo paratha. Service is decent and the food quality is not bad when you're craving Pakistani bbq. I've obviously had way better places but if you're needing a fix, check them out.

Yelp
The food here was so nice and traditional! I always come to Devon st and am amazed at the fact that restaurants like this make Chicago feel like home once again. I also really liked the Kashmiri tea they had as it was something new and I really liked the pink color it had. I do wish however though that the staff was more attentive at making sure there was enough water at the table. Also in the seat I was sitting in there was a fan that constantly blowed cold air right on my back which I thought was kind of rude because it made it very hard to be comfortable.

Yelp
Khan bbq is a Devon Ave fixture, with a lot of history. It is one of the oldest Pakistani grills in the area. I finally had the chance to try it recently, and I thought it was solid. First, the interior is a little dinky and the service is ok, but that's to be expected in a restaurant like this. I ordered the chicken chapli kabob, which I felt was solid, but not great or good enough to bring me back. I think the food here is solid, but other places are just as cheap and have better food and better ambiance (kabab king grill for example).
google avatar

Yelp
Because there's so many Indian restaurants on Devon Avenue, it doesn't matter a lot if one is bad. It has plenty more to choose from. Khan BBQ isn't bad, but there's many places that are better though. About the worst that can be said about it is the atmosphere. There's not much to it, so just focus on the food instead. A lot of familiar items are on the menu such as tandoori chicken if you're looking for traditional Indian barbecue. It also has non meat items. The one we got was the Chana Masala. It's about $12 for the vegetarian entrees. These don't come with anything though. Add a few bucks to get naan. Then add a few more to get rice. All of a sudden it doesn't sound like such a good deal here. That's the main reason I can go to many other places to get something quite similar. For quality of the food, it's good. It's not anything better than from many other places you can get to on Devon Avenue from here. The good thing about it is with the meaty and vegetarian items, it's good for groups because there's lots of variety.

Yelp
Service was good. Server was attentive. I had the chicken and rice which was good and the grilled beef kebab. That was also tasty. and the goat was also very good.

Yelp
A great super speciality Barbecue place in Chicago.Wonderful people, great food, good service and very reasonable prices. Hard to find such honest to goodness people anywhere anymore. Chicken Tikkas out of this World,Love their Nans and Beef Kabobs.

Yelp
Food is awesome but pricing is getting a lil out of hand. I know that everything has gone up but I think some places are still paying the same for their food and maybe getting carried away to the customers. Maybe?

Yelp
My favorite Pakistani restaurant!! A family favorite! Being of Pakistani heritage/descent, I know what flavors to look out for. Sure the restaurant isn't the "prettiest", but the food is what you come here for. My favorite dishes have to be the karahi gosht & the chicken seekh kabob (their tandoori grilled items are AMAZING!) with tandoori naan. The butter chicken is really good too! I also love they give complimentary chutney sauce in a bottle. It's SO good! It's not watered down like most places. Service is alright, nothing spectacular, but they're not rude, so I'll take it. Don't expect any small talk. Prices aren't exuberantly high, but if you are looking for something pretty cheap, this isn't the place. All in all, how much do I love this place? Well, got our wedding food catered from here. Lol

Yelp
Always good food & service when we come ! My husband is a fan of the BBQ! Number one place to eat on Devon Street.

Jabeen A.

Yelp
Best butter chicken and best kabobs. Naan comes out hot and fresh. Always a family go to when we are in the area.

Tariq F.

Yelp
They have best Tandoori chicken and fried Dal. They also make best palak ghost and currently added sweet rice(Zarda)which is improving.
google avatar

Tanya K.

Yelp
My husband and I frequently come for one reason: the goat biryani. The mastermind behind this beautiful and delicate art of biryani-making has every element nailed to perfection. We tell all our friends and bring in family to try it out fresh from the pot.

S A.

Yelp
Their food is too spicy but i go there for the chicken Tandoori (whole chicken) , this is the most juicy and tasty but then they raised the price for one whole chicken to $32 bucks (with tax)
google avatar

Obie P.

Yelp
This is an authentic Pakistani / Indian / Halal restaurant. Their food is delicious and they have a large menu. I would recommend their beef seekh kababs and daal fry (lentils). They make fresh naan bread for you while you are there, sams is true for their BBQ items. I was not overly impressed by the interior but the place was clean. I would suggest carry out. That being said I would recommend this place.
google avatar

Chugher X.

Yelp
Was referred there by friends. Didn't try their signature items maybe that's why my experience was subpar. I tried the tandoori catfish, too much food color and not enough tandoori masala/flavor. The Chapli kababs were pathetic, no flavor or softness like authentic peshawari Chapli kababs. I've heard their tandoori chicken, malai boti and seekh kababs are worth trying, maybe next time.
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
Khan's BBQ came highly recommended to us by a friend who has been here a billion times. It's not a fancy spot by any means, but they have tasty eats. Food comes out insanely fast! We ordered the Tandoori Chicken (delicious and spicy), Butter Naan (you can't go wrong with this) and Butter Chicken (slight spice but overall just great flavor). Service was iffy when the main guy always hovering over us especially when the check came. He even opened the check right in front of us when he picked it up to see how much we tipped and stood for a few seconds. Awkward. All in all, liked the food here and no issues at all! I'd probably try some new places on Devon next time I'm there.
google avatar

Alison Y.

Yelp
Meats are what you come for here and they do it well. While prices may seem high initially, the portions they give are well matched for the prices. They are a solid choice when you're craving Pakistani bbq meats. Meats come with some raita and salad sides (onions, lime, cucumber and some cabbage). Cabbage in the salad mix was a bit untraditional but it worked well enough. Also tried the aloo palak which was a nice way to break up all the meat. It was made well but didn't stand out particularly. Overall, I'd come back to support this local business!
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
Tasty authentic food, absolutely horrible service, average prices. I love tandoori/clay oven style food so I've come here the last few times in in the area. I can't complain about the quality of the food. It's one of the better places that I know of. However, of the last couple of times I've made an order here, they first missed one of the plates I paid for, and this last time they took almost an hour for something I know should've taken half as long, because other times it really hasn't taken so long, and it's not like they were filled with customers. They just really need to be better organized. Seems like they're sloppy with their customer service.
google avatar

Asif K.

Yelp
The place is traditional and original. They have an amazing array of grilled foods that my friends and I absolutely can't get enough of! Prices are very reasonable and if you want to bring a casual date on a budget, this is the place to be. Courteous service and quick delivery of hot food to my table is what I like - this place ranks up there for sure! Note: if you want alcohol, be sure to pregame because they don't offer it. There is a bunch of places where you can get that but I'm pretty sure you're not allowed to bring outside beverages into the restaurant.

Syed R.

Yelp
Excellent food and service Kids and Adults enjoyed throughly One of the very best at Devon

Abdullah E.

Yelp
shitty customer service, the hispanic/Spanish man was being very rude and disrespectful so was the person who was in the front Wanted a naan roll, but they wanted me to buy a paratha roll, idk who eats paratha roll but the most absurd customer service
google avatar

S S.

Yelp
We got takeout here on a weekday I've also eaten in the restaurant a few years ago and I have to say the BBQ items are terrific! They are pretty spicy so brace yourself; I got the goat chops, the behari kabob which is like a very soft beef and a 1/2 tandoori chicken. The goat and beef were incredible! Super spicy and smokey and the portion size was HUGE!! The tandoori chicken lacked flavor and was pretty dry but also was a big portion. They also give you some cut vegetables it was cabbage: onion: cucumber.... I was hoping for some lemon but no cigar. The restaurant seems a little fun down but maybe maintenance is not the best because of covid but overall a great indo-pak bbq place! I will be back and recommend you try the red meats!
google avatar

Yelp
One of the best places on Devon food is amazing. Prices are great! One of the few gems that are still open

Tahiya A.

Yelp
Everything was delicious and so authentic to taste. The chicken boti kabob was very tender and juicy, bihari kabob was so flavorful and the saag daal was EXCELLENT. Highly recommend all the dishes we had

Anna M.

Yelp
El arroz que nos dio para llevar olía acedo, los costos son muy altos para el tipo de comida y echada a perder . Food spoil and smell terrible I order for to go when I reached home .
google avatar

Nikita N.

Yelp
This is one of the best meals I have ever had in Chicago. Khan BBQ is everything that you want from your local Pakistani restaurant. Very casual, the ambiance and vibe does not suggest the meal is as delicious as it will be. We tried many dishes, but the absolute must try's were the seekh kebab, the dal fry, and the aloo paratha. Everything we ate was delicious, but to me personally these were the things I loved the most. If you're looking for an authentic and delicious Pakistani meal, look no further. I can not recommend this restaurant enough!!

Lory M.

Yelp
The service or ambiance are not why you come here. You come here because it's the best tandoori place in the freaking city. I don't know how they keep it both so perfectly moist and charred - most other places have dry ass tandoori. The dal ghost, boti chicken, and frontier rice are other family favorites. The naan is incredible. It can be oily, just skim it off the top. We've been getting food from here for 20+ years - it's the real deal, baby.
google avatar

Jenna S.

Yelp
A friend and I came in here after we left another nearby restaurant that had NO vegetarian options on their menu available (so odd). We walked a few blocks to pop in here so we could get a good combo of veggie and meat dish options. We were very happy with the service - this is a huge place but we were only one of a handful of occupied tables. We were served quickly and it only took about 15 or 20 minutes for our food to come out. We ordered a couple of entrees to share and garlic naan. Everything was tasty and spicy, but not so much that you could only have two bites. All in all, a good spot to grab some dinner. They seem to have no problem accommodating large parties and there's plenty of space that you shouldn't have to wait long for a table. The only downside to this place: the air conditioning kind of sucks in the summer. We came in on a particularly hot day and the window units were working but just barely. The space is pretty large and the aircon units just weren't doing a very good job. Not the best environment for eating spicy, hot food in the middle of summer but it was still worth a trip.
google avatar

Ivy M.

Yelp
So I'm not going to lie, the reviews kind of made me a skeptic but the other place I wanted to try was closed. I'm so Happy we walked in. The service was shitty but the food OMG. I've tried Indian food everywhere and this is the best I've ever had. We had the Garlic Naan, Aloo Gobi, Chicken Boti, Chicken Tikka Masala. Everything was freaking amazing. The portions are great, we had leftovers. Ignore the bad reviews and take a chance, you won't regret it.

Fayaz S.

Yelp
food is not fresh we order chicken for carry out when we get home the chicken was not full look like other customer left and they resell to others customer charged us twice I ordered four seekh kabab they packed four orders mean 16 seekh kabab staying and doing business in America but use desi dirty greedy mind
google avatar

Alvia Y.

Yelp
Absolutely the best Pakistani halal bbq food hands down. We always come here and end up getting the same order (several times for takeout due to covid) - parathas (delicious), naan, karahi gosht (the best in Chicago), chicken seekh kabobs (consistently delicious), dall tarka fry (lentil soup so yummy), Broast whole chicken (kids love it every time, crispy coated pieces of red chicken) and their kheer and gajjar carrot halwa whenever available - simply the best desi bbq food in Chicago.

Yelp
On 8/31/2019 on the recommendation of a colleague I decided to try Khan BBQ on Devon. A friend and I ordered 3 Naan's (2 Plain and 1 Onion), Mango Lassi, Chana Batoora and Tandoori Fish. The food had an unusual aftertaste, I pointed out to my friend also, and it was agreed that both the Chana and tandoori fish didn't taste well, almost like stale tasting. After eating we both left the restaurant and went home. Both my friend and I suffered the entire night from diarrhea, stomach flu, constant pain, and body shivers. Unfortunately, my friend visited the ER, while I downed meds and sat in "the office" throughout the night. On 9/1/19, 9/3/19/, and 9/9/19 left a few voicemails asking for someone to contact me regarding food poisoning. No call back. On 9/12/19, I contacted Khan BBQ and informed a person named "shah" about the issues my friend and I had. He said he would inform the owner and have him call me back. On 9/15/19, after not having heard anything from the owner, I contacted khan BBQ again. After I asked for a supervisor/manager/owner a person got on the phone and refused to identify himself. I informed him of what my friend and I went thru and that we both got sick and he refused to take responsibility and called me a liar, wow! Even after repeatedly pleading my case of food poisoning with the person on the phone, mr. No name, disconnected the phone on me. Wow! Next call is to the Chicago Health Department. If you're in the area (Devon) and looking for good restaurants, you may want to try something else or you might be sitting in "the can" for the rest of your day or night with stomach issues!

Iffat L.

Yelp
Caused severe loose motion and stomach problems, I am guessing they do not maintain hygiene properly - me and my husband both ended up having the worst diarrhoea possible and we ate nothing but the food from here. When we visited the restaurant, we were a little suspicious seeing just 1-2 other people dining in such a huge restaurant at lunch hour. Other than the severe diarrhoea, service was also terrible. Hoping we recover from this

Yelp
Honestly hosting an Ramadan Iftar buffet is not for everyone. I have never felt so anxious & overwhelmed at a restaurant as I did today breaking my fast. The cost is $14.99.. this included: briyani, chicken boti, chicken haleem, mixed veggies, pokoras, cholas, & fruit chaat. We noticed that there wasn't any haleem so we asked refs server who told us, "if you read the menu then you know we have chicken haleem! Go look on the table ".. which in fact was not haleem at all.. we were told later, "there was a delay so we made this chicken instead ".. things happen, it's not a big deal but learn to talk to your guest with more manners. Next, my husband asked for a water jug and that same server told him to use the water from the other table.. the used water from a guest.. he says "make use of that for now".. okay how freaking rude?! They had no interest in helping guest who came from the buffet, they were only interested in if you purchased a la carte. Over all, we spent $31 on some bogus ass cold food.. & veggies out of a can.. this is deff not what I expected from a bbq house .. they need to minimize the guest in take and serve the guest equally. Don't @ me lmao

Yelp
License suspended and it was closed this past weekend when we came to eat...not sure why.

Yelp
Came here for early dinner on a Sunday night, arrived around 6pm and it was pretty empty, but the place is HUGE so it also might have seemed more empty than a smaller place. This place was recommended by a Pakistani colleague and so even though it wasn't busy we decided to stay. Firstly the place is very casual, no fine dining here so set your expectations, like many places on Devon it's all about the food, less about the ambience. That said, while most of the restaurant gives off a casual vibe, they do have a giant fancy chandelier in each room which I thought was kinda funny but cute lol. Anyway onto the food... We knew the grill was where it was at so we ordered the frontier beef and chicken boti along with naan. Then to mix it up we also got the aloo gobi and mutton biryani. The food was great, and huge servings. Between 3 of us we were stuffed and if we didn't have a friend who has a huge appetite we would have def of over ordered. The grill options were def the stand outs, with the biryani a good accompaniment having rice but not the best I've had. I however LOVED the aloo gobi. For a meat centric place I was pleasantly surprised by how good this dish was! The service was fine but not standout. We were seated promptly, orders taken promptly, food arrived hot and at a good pacing. However there was little check in service once meal arrived (had to call them over for water refill) and when they brought check (with a bowl of fennel seeds to help wth digestion which was a nice touch) he hovered until we'd signed the check which I always find awkward. It's a little more expensive than other places on Devon, but the meal was def a good one and I'm sure we'll be back.

Yelp
Khan BBQ is my family's go-to desi restaurant. The chicken sheesh kabob is the best I've ever had - and I've had a lot. The tandoori chicken is always tender and perfectly cooked and the naan is even great the morning after. The icing on the cake? Whenever my parents come into town there's a particular waiter that loves my dad and treats us like family. What more could a paki girl in the city ask for?.... o yea, another order of chicken sheesh kabobs to go please.

Yelp
My friend and I had wanted to come here for a while, and then we saw Sarah S's IG pictures and helped us make up our minds. Hi Sarah! The space is pretty sparse, but clean. No nonsense is fine with me if it means the emphasis is on food. The menu is pretty huge--it's grilled meat heavy but still has some good vegetable options. What we ordered (or over-ordered) Butter Chicken Goat Curry Daal Palak Tandoori Chicken Bihari (beef) Kabab Garlic Naan We loved it all. The standout for me was the Tandoori Chicken and the Curry. Chicken was super tender and very flavorful, just a bit on the spicy side. The Goat curry was so very good--spicy, tender, just watch for the bones within each meaty morsel. We had so much leftover and were able to split it well between us. We are busy moms so good leftovers enough to make a whole meal is worth it. Service was friendly and food came out in a reasonable amount of time. I read that review that talked about service being rude and not treating female customers well. We did not get that vibe at all. Same as with Sarah's review, our main server kinda hovered over us when he came with the bill--which was a bit odd, but could be a cultural difference or maybe they've had issues with dine-n-dashing. No matter to us. Loved the food, loved the spice.

Yelp
Decided to make an impromptu lunch trip to Devon, and landed at "the pink restaurant on the corner" on a whim, solely because I was craving some tandoori fare. I must admit, the tandoori food did not disappoint! We ordered the goat chops (gosht chaamp), and they were absolutely delicious. Fall of the bone tender, and charred to perfection! The flavor was certainly there, and the spice level was PERFECT (very spicy, though, so for those of you who don't care for spicy, you may want to specify that it be made less spicy for you!). We also ordered the Frontier Chicken which, to my delight, was more of a tawa item, than a curry - and the blend of onions, bell peppers, and meat was absolutely harmonious. The Chicken Biryani was pretty flavorful too, although I've had better (no one beats my mom's biryani!). Their Mango Lassi was quite good, and not overly sweet, which was great. Now for the BEST things we had at Khan's - their Kashmiri Chai and the Saunf (Fennel seed) mix at the end of our meal! I'm reading a lot of reviews about being unprofessional but the gentleman who served us, Mr. Afzal was thoroughly professional and very sweet! Not only did he explain our bill to us, he made sure that our takeaway order included all the extra chutneys and salad that would normally accompany that dish. Ambience is hectic and noisy, but he food is on point! Overall, a GREAT experience!

Yelp
Holy crap what happened to Khan's BBQ. Looks like it's been downhill sloping for awhile. There was a time when Khan's was some great tasting food and a tasty cup of Kashmiri tea. Those heydays are now a glimmer of a past long forgotten. What has happened to them? Did they lose prized chefs and cooks? Or did quality take a nosedive. Although they receive quite a following from tourists and locals, their foods have never been as good as they used to. (My last review was almost 8 years ago now.) I think most people that dine on Indian fare once in awhile will find this as pretty good. Being that I eat Indian & Pakistani food often, it's passable. For the best flavors in Pakistani foods try Masti Grill or Anmol Barbecue. Actually, there are many new places on Devon avenue worth checking out. I do not usually suggest an competitor in a review of a restaurant but being as Khan's has been closed recently... The city has been hard at work revoking licensing as of late. For reasons unknown the doors are locked and windows covered up... ****Since the last week of Sept 2016, it seems they've worked out their licensing and are back to operation.***

Yelp
Good food, decent prices. The only request would be for the owners to add chicken biryani to the weeks menu too. Their seekh kebabs are a 10/10 Chicken tikka 10/10 Oh and they have friendly customer service.

Yelp
Stay away... food poisoning... no other nice way to put it! It smells like raw meat in the store. Waiter is so rude and charged us double for everything

Yelp
Hands-down the best BBQ and biryani place on Devon. My family and I have been here many times. They're pricey but their portions are large and and they have an open kitchen - something rare in Indian/Pakistani restaurants. Try ordering kheer "to go" at closing time and they'll pack a gallon of delicious kheer for you. They also make the best vegetarian food.
