Sushi Zone: Market Street Spot Claims Landlord Forced It Out | Eater SF

"A long-favored Indian spot on Solano Avenue has shut its doors, though its Oakland outpost will continue operating." - Paolo Bicchieri

How Restaurant Staffers Turned Furloughs Into Home Businesses

"Manny McCall, a former server at MICHELIN Plate restaurant Zuni Cafe (and talented home cook) had 'zero pickling experience' when he decided to start selling his signature spicy garlic pickles. But, he says, 'Ever since I was a kid, I've been obsessed with pickles. I would get grounded for eating all the pickles in one sitting.' Pickle Pana started as a donation-based side project; McCall initially just asked for $9 to cover shipping and the product itself, and donated several thousand dollars to organizations fighting food insecurity in Black and Brown communities." - Sophie Friedman

Google
Khana peena the best in town. Variety of option for veg and non veg and they have a very beautiful patio and the paintings. This is my fav go to place for indian food👌

Google
Hands down our favorite Indian restaurant around. The food is fantastic, the staff is responsive, and the owners are the best. This has been our daughter’s favorite restaurant for years. She wants to go to Khana Peena every time we go out for dinner. Highly recommended!

Google
An amazing atmosphere to be in! I had some drinks, and great food. Also what a beautiful inside seating area/patio!

Google
Very small portion for the price. I usually order from Namastey Patio down the street. They have good portion, and their dishes are packed with flavor. Khana Peena was lacking in terms of flavor and portions. I ordered chicken tikki masala and it was closer to butter chicken and there were only 5 pieces of chicken cubes floating in a watery sauce. Same with Saag Paneer. There were only a few pieces and the rest was cut with water. It was quite surprising since the reviews are great and especially since the dishes were slightly more expensive than Namastey Patio. There are so many good Indian restaurants around this area. While this restaurant wasn’t bad, it did not stand out.

When people ask where is my favorite restaurant, Khana Peena on College Ave. has been for years and years. A must order by everyone…..the tikka masala sauce . No other restaurant tops it. It is OUTSTANDING!! The service is always top notch! Indian food at its best!

Google
Bought chicken tikka masala, was too watery that eliminated the flavor. I called and complained, the guy who was in charge of the restaurant was very respectful and listened to me very carefully. I really appreciate that. But I don't agree him defending his cook, saying they cook chicken tikka masala differently because its college area…

I eat food and drink wine for a living. Like.. that’s my job. So when I say something is good, I’m basing my opinion on a ton of experience. I came here for the first time around noon on a drizzly Thursday. I wasn’t sure if I’d made the right decision because there was only one other person dining at the time. I was sat, had a lovely chat with the ¿manager/owner? and ordered the fish curry combo and a vodka martini. The martini came out first. Literally perfect. Freezing, balanced, delicious. Then came the piping hot plate of curry. And I mean PIPING hot. They make everything fresh in their open kitchen so my food’s temperature was consistent until I finished. Included in the combo was a salad, rice, naan and (mahi mahi) curry. After my first bite I knew I wouldn’t need a to go box. The fish was succulent and tender and the curry was flavorful and just spicy enough to make my top lip sweaty without worrying about how things will “come out”. You know, y ppl spicy. The naan - omg. So many people fk up naan but this was fresh, buttery, and fantastic. This is the most enjoyable plate of curry I’ve had in a restaurant in a good while. The total for my lunch was $36 all in which for the area and flavor ain’t bad at all. Definitely try Khana Peena when you get a chance.

Food is consistently good, and whether eating there or getting delivery, the service and packaging is great.

Yelp
went back again and the staff were more welcoming and friendly. food is always good and served piping hot. love their lunch specials, great food and a great price!

Yelp
Stopped for lunch today and enjoyed their lunch combo specials. Hubby and daughter had the chicken tikka masala which comes with salad, rice, and naan bread. I had the saag paneer lunch special which had the same accompaniments. The chai tea was the best we ever had. Our server advised us it was made fresh. Mmm, still thinking about the drink. Our server Eduardo was the best and so kind! The restaurant is beautiful and we had a great seat by the street so we could look out. Can't wait to go back again!!

Yelp
My chicken tikka masala consisted of I'm not pre-cut metrically uniform chunks of chicken tossed in a slurry of thousand island dressing, sprinkled on my dish. This place has gonna down hill.

Yelp
Came here on the recommendation by a friend who I would trust with the question; what is your favorite Indian restaurant in the area? This was her pick and I'm so glad I asked. Came here for the first time, after having walked past it for many years, since I already had "my Indian place" and it did not disappoint. Equally important, the man that welcomed us and took our order, he seemed like the owner because he was so good and you could tell he cared about customer service. See photo for the food, all of it was great.

Yelp
The food and ambiance was excellent. Service was prompt and checked in to ensure we liked our meals. Really delicious Indian food, some of the best we've eaten. Highly recommend the lamb.

Yelp
Solid. Really good food, comfortable service. (relaxing, not rushed/inattentive depending on your speed).

Yelp
We had a sister restaurant up Solano for many years That will be a bar. This location has same type tandoor oven. Same brilliant vegetables Perfectly done. Recipes are identical to our taste which is so authentic Glad we tried this location. Will support going forward.

Yelp
Nice area in Rockridge. , easy to park on the street. Friendly service and delicious food.

Yelp
I wasn't super thrilled with my experience here. Granted, we did takeout, so take it with grain of salt. However, overall the food we got here was quite bland. It certainly tasted like Indian food, but overall I wasn't all that impressed. Particularly the Saag Paneer didn't quite do it for me, just quite lacking in flavor. I also was a bit disappointed that it didn't come with any form of side, naan or rice. While I understand I could have ordered it separately, generally I view it as pretty standard to include something to eat it with.

Yelp
I have always love Indian food, especially southern style masala dosas, lentil soups and delicious curries. Just recently have I experienced Khana Peena and was very pleased. Everything was tasty and the service was exceptional. Edwardo attended to our every need and was a pleasure! The great thing about south asian food is that is often different each time you indulge. Spices, fresh ingredients and the chef's mood is captured at each sitting. The restaurant is lovely with indoor and outdoor space.. a perfect setting. I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
I'm from Los Angeles and i had came to visit some friends in Berkeley and had lunch at the old Solano location about 2 years ago. We recently returned to visit again and just had to stop by but the location in Berkeley was closed the 3 different times we tried to get lunch. Until a local told me that there was another location in Oakland and I was so relieved. When you enter the Oakland location, you're greeted by an elegant interior and a smell of warm spices. Got some take out and it was as good as i remembered. Portions are great served in deli containers and for a good price. Great fresh naan bread and fluffy rice was just as great. Had to take my left overs back to LA and now I want to go back just for this. Person taking my order was really friendly and service was nothing short of friendly and amazing. I need the Coconut chicken recipe for when im not in the bay area so i dont miss it

Yelp
Unexpectedly good Indian food in this residential corner of Oakland Excellent table service on Saturday evening, Aug 17, 2024.

Yelp
This might be my new favorite restaurants, hands down. I've always been a huge fan of Indian food, and I struggled finding solid restaurants in or around Berkeley UNTIL I stumbled across Khana Peena. Just a few blocks down from the Rockridge BART station, this quaint restaurant is so warm and cozy, with fantastic service. Immediately was happily greeted when I walked in and taken to a table. Everyone who worked there very kind, courteous, and gentle. Not to mention, this was some of the best Indian food I've had around Berkeley. One thing I really love about the dinner platter in particular is the VARIETY, not only do you get the main course, but you get rice, AND naan, AND lentils, AND grilled vegetables. It's quite fantastic and you can't get anything like this anywhere else near Berkeley/Oakland! I'll be back.

Yelp
Ok let's start with service. This place has absolutely elite service. We were treated very rudely before we came to Khana Peena and the staff there are incredible. They are so fast and nice and responsive. Nothing but good things to say about the servers here. Even the new employee was really knowledgeable and welcoming. The food is excellent. I had a chicken tikka masala with veggie pakora to start. The pakora was perfectly fried and super rich. The masala was sooooo buttery and delicious. Just an all around excellent meal. I will say they definitely toned down the spice so make sure that you order the most spicy option if you're a fan of the heat. The drinks were also fantastic. Nothing to add here except go here for a great cocktail! All around this place is excellent. No notes from me!

Yelp
This is a casual Indian place in Rockridge with some indoor and outdoor seating. If you're Indian I really don't recommend coming here. My friend insisted on Indian food and we were shopping nearby so we just sat down for lunch. I'm giving two stars for generous portions and polite service. I tried to go basic when ordering so as not to get too disappointed. The saag had no masala or flavor it was like plain cooked spinach with onion and cream. Not much salt, spices garlic or ginger. Paneer was not tender and fresh. The naan was rather thin, dry, and not very fluffy. I ordered garlic naan which is typically coated in fresh garlic and ghee. The naan was also not flavorful no ghee and not much garlic flavor. The beautiful aromas and textures of authentic Indian food were missing here. The server was polite but not experienced. For example, they put in one person's order at the table and then came back to get the other person's order. It was odd and confusing. My non Indian companion thought her chai was subtle in flavor but still enjoyed it and also her tikka masala. It did not look appealing to me. To make matters worse I got an upset stomach after this meal which is so disappointing.

Yelp
Wasn't thrilled I have definitely had better here in Fremont. The food was mediocre. Very bland for Indian food I expected my taste buds to be pleased. Also the naan tasted like it was old posit from the day before Wasn't fresh as all. 2 stars because our server was nice

Yelp
Delicious as always, service was great... honestly the go to spot for Indian cuisine. Talk about some of the architectural designs of the place, making this a land mark for the community.

Giuseppe G.

Yelp
Good food , good portion and good service Stopped by for quick lunch Price was also very reasonable even though I was overcharged for the lentil wafer appetizer Menu says 1.99- charge was 3.99 Not a big deal When in the area I might check it out again
google avatar

Tomas R.

Yelp
Came here with a friend on a weeknight dinner. It was quite empy - the staff were VERY friendly (often making small jokes). Ordered the tikka masala - everything was buttery and seasoned well. I think the price point is higher BUT given the location it makes sense. I'd come here again with a larger group and split some plates as they were quite large.
google avatar

Asael R.

Yelp
Staff is very friendly! As soon as we came in we were greeted and taken to our seats. Before asking for a table, we asked to use the restroom and without hesitation they quickly led the way. The atmosphere in the restaurant was very welcoming, i would definitely recommend a friend. Thank you very much!

Michael M.

Yelp
I went in for lunch and got the chicken saag. It came out steaming hot, full of flavor. I even had some left over for dinner so I can only imagine the dinner portion size. I will be going again.
google avatar

Jay S.

Yelp
I always love this restaurant. This is where are you come to have a nice casual experience. The wait staff are caring but will leave you alone. You can dine indoors or in the patio for a different experience. As for the food, it is the best comfort food with plenty of taste or fire! A large menu of food including vegetarian, and you can let your waiter know how you want your food to taste. Our go-to has always been the chicken tikka masala and garlic Nan. Superb. You won't be disappointed here.
google avatar

Merissa P.

Yelp
Great good, everything tasted very fresh. Maybe helped that we are at 2pm. Too notch service..,since we were the only ones eating at that time.
google avatar

Chance M.

Yelp
I've always had warm service here. The portions are big, which I know people seem to like, but honestly I could use a little less. It's still my go to.
google avatar

Robert A.

Yelp
So I went here today. This was my first time here in three years. Food is the same. Very good, same waiter he is awesome a little fast and overworked but he did a great job. The menu is overwhelming and I think their should be 2 waiter's. But the service and food was amazing. Beautiful location. A little pricey but I had leftovers.
google avatar

Theresa S.

Yelp
Wow! Khana Peena never disappoints. The outdoor patio that we usually shy away from at night was a perfect setting for a COVID-19 dinner out. It's set up with plenty of space to distance customers. There are also heaters- though we didn't need them that night. The food was amazing. We had chicken tikka masala, lamb biryani, garlic naan, and vegetables. It was a perfect meal for two with a little bit left over to take home for lunch the next day. They have the best chicken masala and naan. I can't wait to go back

Claire R.

Yelp
It's a pleasant ambiance, the waiter was super friendly, the food was tasty, and the portions were generous. The lamb was tender, garlic naan was good, eggplant dish was flavorful and warming, and they have brown rice available if preferred. I'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Charlie R.

Yelp
This is my favorite Indian restaurant in the East Bay. Great lighting and I love how the owner/chef slices his dishes. They are delicious not to much cream and a really nice balance of flavor. I've chatted up the owner and he really loved the business and it shows.
google avatar

Christophe D.

Yelp
Good Indian food; attentive service; a little pricey. Pleasant outdoor seating area in Rockridge.

Kim S.

Yelp
The food is delicious, the atmosphere comfy and the wait staff nice. An outside patio if you want
google avatar

Leslie A.

Yelp
This is our neighborhood go-to for Indian food, a family owned and run business that hires staff who are also super friendly and caring. The food is really good -- and if you like it spicy don't be afraid to order it Indian spicy. That is the key. Delicious cocktails as well. P.S. To the reviewer who said the food was bland, saag paneer is a typically mild dish ... I ate it in India and thought it was boring, but I was with people who don't like spicy food. :) The key at Khana Peena is to select the spice level of the dish you're ordering and if you like it spicy go for the spiciest.

Sonam B.

Yelp
Visited this restaurant on my birthday and was so disappointed with the experience! Being Indian, I tend to be picky with Indian food in the Bay Area but this restaurant barely got the basics right. Even a simple Butter Chicken/ Paneer Tikka Masala just tasted like a mouthful of butter and cream, barely got the flavor of any Masalas that actually bring out the taste of this incredible dish!! The only decent item I tried here was the Samosa Chaat. But I must also add that the server was accommodating and he didn't mind me returning the Chicken dish for a Paneer one instead. So don't let my experience deter you from visiting this restaurant.

Connor C.

Yelp
Went there with my sister good vibes the owner a nice bad ass dude good vibes hot steamy plates good stuff dinner there amazing

Yelp
Kanna Peena, what happened!? I've had some wonderful meals here but tonight I ordered takeout Karahi Lamb. It was bad. I didn't finish it. The garlic naan was rubbery, and the mango chutney was like an unpleasant orange-colored jam. I called and asked if the chef had changed and was told no, same chef, same recipes. I'll go back one more time (it's in my neighborhood), and I'll write another review. Hopefully a good one.

Mario L.

Yelp
I'm writing this review as I'm here just finishing my meal. I love it. Now I'm going to spread the word to family and friends and everybody. Please come give it a try, I ordered chicken tika masala. I will definitely come here for it again. Very friendly staff. There is a tv playing games if are happening. So I'm very pleased.

David V.

Yelp
This is my go to spot when I need my fix. Always a winner.. great food, good service and full bar.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food. Love the outdoor seating option for my extra covid concerned friends and the fact that there is a full bar doesn't hurt. Great service.
google avatar

Amulya V.

Yelp
We got saag paneer and paneer naan via DoorDash. Nothing extraordinary in terms of taste and quality. We've had better naan in the area than this place. I still don't know what to order here that's a winning dish. May not come back for a while.

Yelp
I went there for my birthday very polite friendly and food was delicious love the samosas and Okra stew was really good ( I forgot the names of food ) but I highly recommend it for nice friendly dinner . They have lunch buffet I will try it soon
google avatar

Kyshia M.

Yelp
Thanks to my boss for introducing me here. I had a $50 gift card and since I love Indian food, I knew what I would order. As always, chicken masala and garlic naan. Recently I found out that they have all you can eat lunch buffet for under $15. Select items are laid out by the register for you to eat. I would browse there before ordering from the menu if you go during lunch time. I tried something new my last visit and ordered the Seafood Curry and it was pleasantly different. It came with a light colored curry sauce that blended perfectly with the seafood. Normally I wouldn't order something new but I'm glad I did because I can add that to my list of things to order next time I come here. There's inside and outside seating. The outside seating area is great on a nice sunny day as there is a covering that eliminated direct sunlight from burning you as you eat.
google avatar

Mary W.

Yelp
Food was decent but was overpriced for Indian food. Lack of service too, it was super slow ... took them about 40 mins for them to bring the entrees. The plate looks huge (dinner) but it's nothing but a half scoop of rice and probably scoop of curry sauce , 3 -4 pieces of grilled veggies and 1/2 naan for around $18 a dish.. very pricey. You can get about 2 entree in other places. Dirty... once I sat down I saw their tablecloth has a lot of curry spots on it in which I wouldn't know how long it has been there.... Not coming back.....
google avatar

Kalem V.

Yelp
I've been here several times with friends and family. The owner and staff are always friendly. The food is consistently some of the best I've ever had.

Rachel S.

Yelp
Our go to Indian food place! We love Khana Peena. Food is always delicious. My husband who is Indian loves it and so do I. Service is always above and beyond as well! The restaurant is clean and I like the vibe of the outdoor area as well.
google avatar

Kenneth T.

Yelp
We ordered for take out and when we called to order, there was NO mention of spice level. It's not about spicy but about the flavor of spices. So how would you correct that for a take out order?

Catherine F.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite restaurants in the entire Bay Area! I have never had a bad or even so-so meal. I just tried the coconut lamb curry...wow!!!

gar R.

Yelp
A favorite treat. The food is always excellent. The service is friendly and warm. And we enjoy eating outside, especially in this post-Covid era. We bring friends here and they always enjoy it. One of my favorite Indian restaurants.

Caffeinegirl G.

Yelp
This review is long overdue. We have been going to Khana Peena for over five years now. Always met with a smile and good humor, great food and great service. The food is authentic Indian cuisine, and is consistently good. We always know that when we sit down to eat or order take out we will be getting a great meal. The tikka masala curry, malai kofta, tandoori chicken, and naans are excellent. And the gulab jamun dessert is wonderful as well. We have even ordered food for catering parties, and have received many compliments. The food is kid friendly too - our kids will eat the mild tikka masala and tandoori chicken. The cocktails are great, as is the mango lassi. We love this place!!
google avatar

Jennah S.

Yelp
Great drinks and food, especially for vegetarians! We usually get some of the dinner combos that come with the grilled veggies and naan. Ambiance and service when dining in is wonderful, they have a nice patio for outdoor dining. Ordered pickup here a lot throughout pandemic which was reliably delicious too.
