"The first bite of a bánh mì at Khang Vietnamese Sandwich Cafe changes you, and so does the second—just go with it. The warm, fresh bread is so soft and airy, with an open crumb and a golden outer crust that flakes wonderfully. Every inch of bread is thickly smeared with butter and mayo, and the marinated barbecue pork is tangy with garlic. So if you’re around Alief and need to grab a quick lunch, get a bánh mì at Khang. What to order: bánh mì thịt nướng (bbq pork), bánh mì khang (khang special combination), bánh mì bo kho (vegetable beef soup and bread)" - chelsea thomas

"As its name implies, it's all about the sandwich at Khang. There are 17 different banh mi options to choose from, including the Khang Special, which combines cold cuts and shredded chicken before it’s slathered with a rich pate. Follow it up with an artichoke jelly drink, and consider making it a feast for the family with Khang’s buy-five, get-one-free special." - Minh Truong, Brittany Britto Garley

"When the Houston summer finally ends, you know, in like November, and the first truly crisp and cool day arrives, you sometimes feel alive again. Like you’re no longer a grizzled swamp monster, but a refreshed and reinvigorated human. That’s what it feels like to eat at Khang Vietnamese Sandwich Cafe in Alief. The first bite of a bánh mì changes you, and so does the second—just go with it. The warm, fresh bread is so soft and airy, with an open crumb and a golden outer crush that flakes wonderfully. Amazing Banh mi! The staff was super attentive and made me feel like family. I came at a less busy time buy I heard this is the spot so usually there’s a crowd. I got the #2 and it did not disappoint! The meat was good, veggies were fresh and the bread was fresh as well. Definitely coming back when I’m in the area!

Google
Small little shop with friendly service & freshly made dishes. #8 Banh Mi $6 (Cold Cut Combination) was my favorite! Love how their cold cut slices are not super thin like a few other banh mi places so you can taste the full flavor of each slice within one bite. Their Banh Bot Chien $8 was also decent. The dipping sauce could have been a bit less concentrated in my preference.

Google
We had the #2 grill pork and #8 cold cut combo. Good flavor. Bread was not hard like other places where it cuts the roof of your mouth. $6 each and there buy 5 get one free.

Nice service by a man at the register. He was also helping to prep the banh mi in the kitchen with another lady. Never been to this place so I wanted to give it a try. Order 2 combination banh mi ($6/ea), 1 roast pork banh mi ($7) and 1 bbq pork banh mi ($6) with veggies on the side. Came home and was about to try the roast pork banh mi because I been craving for it. How could a restaurant charge customer $7 for a banh mi that came with 6,7 small pieces of meat?… The crispy pork looks old and not even crispy. Hopefully they can improve on this if they want returning customers instead of one time customer.

Google
Opens earlier than other places. Lots of option to pick from. So far the variety one is good. We also got the BBQ pork which we will try later. I recommend coming here grab your sandwich and have it for lunch or dinner. We bought it for our flight back to NY and loving the variety one already. The buy 5 get 1 free is a good deal.

Google
The food was absolutely amazing! One of the freshest Ban Mi I ever ordered. I would recommend ordering extra meat and fried egg, but besides that bread was fresh, lots of garnish. Im impressed!

Google
Very nice and clean, the sandwiches are delicious; my only criticism being the meat to veggie ratio but the sandwich was $4.50 so I can’t complain too much 😅. I also got a mango green tea which was also pretty incredible( actually tastes like mango). The owner was courteous and service oriented, all in all I highly recommend this place to anyone in the mood for food!

Google
Love this place. The owner is very friendly. Food is good as well. Bánh mì is soft and fluffy. Their dishes are on point. Reasonable price and portions are not too small. Very good place for small bites of Vietnamese dishes. Not to mention, their milk tea is very similar to those back in Việt Nam. My new favorite place for sure.

Yelp
Came here because it's next door to Covang and haven't stopped. They're old school and do the buy 5 get 1 free banh mi. It's not the nicest inside but something about the random assortment of decor, Vietnamese guys playing VC in the corner, and random church pews for you to sit while you wait let's you know it's going to be good. I get the grilled chicken banh mi and it's bomb. I don't get an egg (don't even know if they offer it) because I get a bunch and get them later. I've tried their Vietnamese coffee but was not a fan. I didn't deduct for it because their banh mi's are life.

Yelp
I was visiting from the East Coast and was looking for a great banh mi...out of the few places I tried in houston... this place was the best. Bread was nice and toasty and fresh. Meat filled with veggies. If I'm ever in the area again... I will definitely stop in. Didn't get a chance to try any beverages, so there's nothing to say about that.. The seating area is available if you're eating in, but my orders were to go. Simple and casual sandwich shop. Solid 4 stars out of 5.

Yelp
The Banh mi tap cam is amazing. This place is super awesome and the best banh mi in town if not the US. Warm bun that isn't hard with a nice crisp to it and enough butter and pate to excite the palate. Very nice little shop in a strip center. The Banh mi is freshly made. Definitely my go to for Banh mi. Not a fan of the coffee as I wish it was stronger and less sweet.

Aireal S.

Yelp
Friendly, clean atmosphere. The service was prompt & you can get two sandwiches and a drink for nearly $20!

Candy C.

Yelp
This is not a dinner place... they close early 6:30pm. Staff was friendly but started to get anxious close to 6:30pm. I had a beef banh mi... a little stingy with the meat... where is the meat. The bread was nice. Dinning room is small I am guessing they have a good lunch crowd.

Yelp
The pho was flavorful and all ingredients were fresh and bubbling hot. Service was attentive and friendly. Good find heading home from that part if town I normally don't frequent this past weekend.

Yelp
I decided to give this place a try after seeing it on Alison Cook's Top 100 list and as a farewell meal for my grandma before she flew home. She is vegetarian and I am used to Vietnamese restaurants having good vegetarian options. Unfortunately, Khang's really only had egg options since they ran out of tofu. This restaurant is primarily and first most a banh mi restaurant. There are miscellaneous extras on the menu but do not come here thinking there is extra fried rice on the menu. The cashier was very kind to me while dining here. I ordered the grilled chicken banh mi and the egg banh mi. I was hoping to order a tofu banh mi but the cashier explained that they ran out of tofu. I was also hoping to order normal boba for my Vietnamese coffee but the cashier also explained that they ran out of normal boba. All in all, our banh mi was good. The veggies were lightly pickled and the bun was soft with a crust, just like it should be. My grilled chicken had a good flavor and it tasted freshly cooked instead of being a reheated leftover. Tons of easy parking, area felt safe while I was there for lunch, outdoor and indoor seating, and fast service. Ambiance was quick counter service. This wouldn't be a romantic date spot. Pretty dated feeling and not sparkling clean - just clean enough. Feels very family run. Khang's is not close to where I usually am in Houston nor is it dramatically better than my other two favorite banh mi places (Banh mi N more/Kims *my heart* ) so I will probably not be back. However, if you live in this area or are close by, it is worth buying an affordable banh mi to eat then or later. I bought 3 sandwiches and 1 coffee for $20 - can't beat it. My grandma loved her egg sandwiches, I'm just knocking the star because running out of tofu and normal boba is annoying & the portion size of the coffee was surprisingly small due to the overload of ice.

Yelp
This place is definitely out of the way, but we decided to drive an extra 15 minutes due to great reviews. It was very empty on a Wed noon but the parking lot was full of cars. They offer buy 5 get 1 free, so we got qty 1 combo, qty 2 bbq pork, qty 1 grilled beef, qty 2 meatballs. We told the man behind the register that we wanted the veggies separated with no cilantro and jalapeños. Guess what? We forgot to check before leaving and got qty 2 combo instead where the grilled beef was missing. Also, we got tons of cilantros and jalapeños. See, people need to take food allergies seriously. I told the cashier that I'm allergic to cilantros and so no cilantro. But he either didn't understand or didn't care. I was so upset that the beef was missing and also brought the whole bag of cilantros home. The bread itself was light with good amount of protein. I wish they would give more carrots and cucumbers. Also if you use credit card, they charge a service fee without telling you.

Yelp
Fast, fresh delicious sandwiches. The bread has a crunchy crust and very soft, fluffy interior. The bread is not tough. My mom who has had extensive dental work, can easily bite throttle bread and chew with ease. The marinated meat filling remind me of home cooking. I would rather support a local, mom & pop shop than a national or international chain.

Yelp
Decided to check this spot out to grab some Vietnamese sandwiches Togo. I ordered the roasted pork Banh Mi, grilled pork Banh Mi, and the Special Combo Banh Mi (with veggies on the side for later). Ordering was simple and easy, and staff was very kind. Roasted Pork Banh Mi 3.5/5 - it was good but when I think of roasted pork, I think of that nice crunch from the crispy skin. I would have liked to see that here but overall a solid Banh Mi with plenty of meats and generous veggies. Grilled Pork Banh Mi 4/5 - this one was for my bf. His feedback was that he enjoyed it and would eat it again, which is saying something bc he is quite picky about Banh Mi. His only complaint was that the Banh Mi is a little smaller in length compared to our usual spot, but I also feel like they give more meat here which evens it out. Special Combo Banh Mi 4/5 - I had this the next day for lunch. Reheated and adding the veggies on the side - it was still very fresh and yummy. I enjoyed this and would get it again over the roasted pork Banh Mi. Overall this spot is a little more convenient for me as it's closer to home and the Banh Mi are pretty good in my opinion. I'll definitely be returning in the future and will put them in the rotation with my usual go to spot.

Calvin D.

Yelp
Pretty good Vietnamese banh mi's here. It's a small family pended business so I'd love to support them. You can never go wrong with Vietnamese coffee. I'd asked for less ice for you to get more coffee in the cup. My favorite would be the special banh mi or pork with extra pate and butter

Ronald D.

Yelp
Good bread, good aioli, kind of skimpy on the meats , served warm. Nothing mind-blowing but an ok sandwich.

Cassandra S.

Yelp
No one in line on a Saturday afternoon, but the place should have been packed. The banh mi was the best I have ever had, and it is cheap too. I will definitely be making more trips to this place soon.

Michael A.

Yelp
This might be my new favorite banh mi spot. Bread is smaller than my benchmark Don Cafe but there is definitely more meat and moisture in size proportionally. Bread is crunchy and fresh too! If you want the cold cut special at Don, you have to get the number 8, not the combo!

Tom L.

Yelp
Houston is well known for authentic Vietnamese food, being Vietnamese myself and eating banh mi my entire life, khang could be the top 3 I've experienced in Houston. The bread is crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. A good meaty banh mi comes with the pate and the pate here, is very very very very good. It's meaty but also silky and smooth at the same time. I didn't have sweet mayo but you don't need it. If it had sweet mayo, it would be BOMB!!!! I ordered the number 1 special which has all sorts of meat, very fresh with sweet, tang, toughness but soft at the same time. The greens are typical, pickled carrots and daikon with fresh cilantro and cucumbers. It is what you expect fresh vegetables. I will say the biggest difference is, the sandwiches I had, came with an Asian chutney sauce, it's a tame sweet type of sauce with garlic bits in it. When added all together, it's a beautiful medley of taste, plus you don't have to wait 30 mins in line like Don's Banh Mi. Plus the owners are nicer and I'm not being yelled at. Khang is a gem of a spot, I will be going again. Authentic. They also offer a special, Buy 5 get 1 free l.

Angelita V.

Yelp
Ate a Banh Mi today as a late lunch, had their #2, barbeque pork sandwich. I enjoyed the bread, but the fillings were very sparse, both in meat and vegetable. At $6.00 each, I think that's high for a small sandwich. To stay successful in this business, Mr and Mrs. Khang have to add more meat to justify their pricing. I live very close to this location and wants this mom & pop operation to succeed.

John K.

Yelp
Nostalgia of a banh mi shop that offers a buy 5 get 1 free deal. Always a good start Tried their two specials with cold cuts; one with chicken and another with pork. Both sandwiches had a good amount of toppings, but I wish the bread was just a little softer and there was slightly more mayo/aioli. I especially appreciated the variety of meats they had and various other offerings (bo ne, banh bot chien, bo kho, and heo quay). Their coffee was actually pretty good as well. The owner of the shop and his son were very nice and the place was kept quite clean. Overall, this could be a banh mi shop I venture to if I wanted to buy many different types of sandwiches.

Laura H.

Yelp
I got the bbq pork banh mi and bo kho. The banh mi was really good! Good amount of meat and veggies. The bread was perfect. Crunchy but not hard. The Bo kho not so much. You get a tiny container and a little amount of meat. It was mostly liquid and carrots. I will for sure go back for the banh mi though.

Diana N.

Yelp
Banh Mi Dac Biet (special combination sandwich) $5 - really tasty. It included thit nuong (bbq pork) which makes it different than other places that just have ham/pork lunch meat. Fresh veggies, yummy butter, soft yet crispy bread that won't cut your mouth. Only complaint is that it was kind of small for $5. I usually go to Don Cafe, but this was good since I was nearby. They take credit card but it was $5.19

Jade L.

Yelp
Love banh mi gio bo here. Not too overwhelming with stuffing and good crispy bread. Always come back here when I'm in Houston

Jackie K.

Yelp
Khang's Vietnamese Sandwich Cafe's BBQ pork banh mi was delicious! The bread was fresh, the aioli was delicious, and the sandwich was simply good. At $6 each, it was a pretty good deal.

Vivek M.

Yelp
The sandwiches were really good. They had the right balance of savory, sweet and a little bite of the jalapeno. The mango slush was good but the Vietnamese coffee had too much ice.

Linda T.

Yelp
Maybe it's just me but I don't enjoy their banh mi. I know extern one has their speciality but their dac biet combo has no pate and it's just weird. Banh mi itself is just okay. Banh mi thit nuong is just decent. The lady at the front (assuming she's the owner), doesn't care about till you pay then she goes off to make your food. No precaution when making the sandwiches. For the location in the plaza... good luck competing with many other Vietnamese sandwich shops.

Chase L.

Yelp
Came here one morning on the way home from Med Center. Easy to find, right off of Bellaire and South Eldridge. After reading the reviews, I had to give this place a go. Nice decor and setup, definitely not your regular hole in the wall Vietnamese sandwich shop. The gentleman behind the counter was friendly as well. There are many choices to choose from, and they all looked like great options. So I ordered the special combination, grilled chicken, meatball, and grilled beef. Whenever I see meatball on the menu, I have to order it. I was not disappointed in any of the 4 sandwiches that I ordered. The bread was perfect, the meats were all flavorful and not over-seasoned, the sandwiches weren't saturated with mayo, and the vegetables and pickles were fresh. I should have taken pictures but I was too hungry. This place is definitely top notch!

Chau H.

Yelp
First time trying this place based on an article I saw from Eatery and it did not disappoint! It was so satisfying that I decided to write this 5 star review right away. I got the banh mi thit nuong (bbq pork baguette) and the seasoning was just right with a slight buttery taste on the baguette. The baguette was soft and fluffy yet still maintained a little crispiness on the outside but not to where it will injure the upper roof of your mouth. Anyway the banh mi thit nuong reminds me of this other place I used to love but stopped going there because quality went down. Glad I tried this place and this will be my go-to banh mi shop from now on! I will definitely be back to try the other banh mi! I hope they maintain their quality!

Vu T.

Yelp
One of my favorite banh mi places. Dac biet is probably my favorite here. Beef and thit nuong and grilled chicken sandwiches are pretty good too.

Jennifer N.

Yelp
Reading other people's review, I was excited to try this place since it's not so far from my house. However, I don't know if the guy was having a bad day because he sure looked grumpy. I was in the middle of customizing my kids sandwiches, when he took a phone call order while I was talking. (When I got home, he didn't make the sandwich right.) He has a secret sauce, which tastes like the meatball sauce, that he puts in the sandwich, which is a nice touch. However, the meat serving was pretty skimpy. Bread was good. Prices are up to $3.50, but still cheap. They take CC now. No more buy 5 get 1 free.

Alex T.

Yelp
Khang is a kitchen magician, turning regular ingredients into delicious adventures with his amazing cooking skills.

Quang T.

Yelp
Food good. Great service. Go here. Great ambience. 10/10 def recommend. Go here. Need I say more?

Sally T.

Yelp
I'm so obsessed with this mom & pop banh mi shop. Bread is so soft & the meats are so well marinated! They always have specials going on thru-out the week which is so convenient and the owners are so kind. Please come and check this place out if you have a LOVE for banh-mis like I do. They also serve bánh bột chiên, gà chiên, bò né, tapioca drinks if you would like something else.

Peggy M.

Yelp
Excellent bahn mi. Hand made with care and good ingredients. This is mostly a take away restaurant, there are a few little tables if you want to eat there.

Kathy M.

Yelp
This is my new favorite sandwiches place! First of all, the price is super cheap, only $3 for any selection of proteins (pork, beef, chicken, fish). I was just expecting an okay sandwich but it turned out to be so so delicious. The bread was fluff, soft and airy inside but crispy outside, the meats were well marinated, juicy and tender. I forgot to ask for extra carrots but they gave a right amount already. I'm so happy to find this place. I will try the drink and other foods next time. This place could be really busy if it locates in the center of Vietnamese/China town.

David N.

Yelp
Nice hidden gem of a Banh Mi Vietnamese sandwich shop. Has some socially distanced tables inside. Clean atmosphere and friendly staff. Sandwich came out hot and quick. I got the grilled pork and it was tasty and juicy. The baguette was crunchy and not stale. Will return!

Angela C.

Yelp
I was looking for a Banh mi place on yelp and told my BF that's what I wanted for lunch and he said "I know a spot", turns out he took me straight to Khang's which I had been looking at on Yelp. I was pleased with the nice decor, pretty fast service and Absolutely delish Sandwiches. I will be returning anytime im around that part of town.

Joe P.

Yelp
The milk tea was so flavorful and fragrant. Banh Mi were very good, the bread was crispy on outside, airy, and soft inside. I tried the #1&#2 combination & bbq pork. The service was amazing and I saw the owner giving someone not well off a free sandwich and drink. He didn't know I was watching or could hear as I had headphones that just happened to be paused at that moment.

Linda T.

Yelp
I decided to stop by this place half an hour before they closed on the 1st Saturday of their grand opening. It was empty and I started questioning if I wanted to eat here or not. I'm glad I did though! I ordered Bo Ne (sizzling beef plate) and a Banh mi dac biet. I thought it was unusual for them to not give us Vietnamese mayo and pate. Their beef is seasoned perfectly and wasn't over cooked plus 2 eggs. It also came with salt and pepper and lime.. kind of reminded me of bo luc lac (shaking beef). Their Banh mi dac biet isn't like the other Banh mi shops. I was kind of surprised it had Thit nuong in it. You pay after you finish your meal, so I asked her why there wasn't any Vietnamese mayo or pate and she said because she doesn't have any yet. It was in my Banh mi dac biet though. Anyways, I'll come back in a few months once they settle in because everything is really affordable.

Allision T.

Yelp
How can missed this place all this time? The best banh mi I've ever had! It's crispy enough on the outside and super soft on the inside, makes every single bite so satisfying! The fillings of the banh mi are so well seasoned, and every bite takes me back to my childhood. I also tried Bo Kho/beef stew, it was seasoned just right. Every pieces of meat was so tender that doesn't required ones to chew too much, and I love that the consistency of the stew wasn't too thick like many places makes it to be. Prices were extremely reasonable, and outstanding quality. Overall, I can't wait to go back to try other dishes.

Johnny P.

Yelp
Referred here by a friend and flashback to 90's Vietnamese Cafe prices where Viet Sandwich is still a value at that...Bread and meat were great w no quality loss based on the cost at $3.50 a sandwich...Can't wait to come back and try the bo luc lac

Marce C.

Yelp
I'm glad I found them, not only walking distance from home, but also very tasty! Great sandwiches, fresh and great flavor. I also enjoyed my honey milk tea.

Katie N.

Yelp
This is my favorite banh mi shop! If you want authentic banh mi go there! It's sooo good!

W M.

Yelp
My husband (who is usually not a big fan of Bahn mi) said this place made the best Bahn mi he has ever had! His favorite is grilled beef sandwich but the grilled pork is good too. The bread and meat are good quality and they are huge for the price. I had combination sandwich which is really good. All the ladies who work there are very nice, polite and very helpful. They have buy 5 get 1 free !

Butchn L.

Yelp
07/18/22. watch out price is double now. 3 is $6 now. food is good. i got combo banhMi

Fortheloveoffood ..

Yelp
They are a hit and miss. My mom loves the dac biet banh mi and I love their boba tea. I ordered the shredded chicken banh mi and it's "okay" I got old bread so it was a little dryer than normal. The guy working there look like he's in his late 50s seems kinda rude. I don't know what his problem is in life but his attitude sucks. But overall it's a pretty good place

Annie S.

Yelp
I've driven pass on my way home a few times and today I decided to stop by and buy a banh mi. I bought a #1 (banh mi Dac biet) it's a combination and an iced vietnamese coffee. There were 2 people ahead of me so the service was a little slow but bearable. Banh mi #1 wasn't too bad and the ice coffee. Prices for both is good. The only complaint is, I would like to get less ice in my ice coffee, the cup was full of ice & 3 slurps and the coffee is gone. However I would be back again to try different banh mi and drinks on the menu. Oh btw since they just open not long ago, they accept CASH ONLY!!!!

Jumbo T.

Yelp
This place has great Banh Mi, very clean inside and modern looking too. Their Banh mi is crispy like it just came out of the oven. I ordered some Bang Mi Dac Biet, Trung op la and Xiu Mai. I highly recommend everyone to try the Banh mi Dac Biet and Op La (favorite) simple and delicious!

Anastasia A.

Yelp
Been going here for years and the owners recognize me only after I start speaking. Can't blame them though, because I look different every time. Very friendly and talkative if you walk in during non rush hour times and the shop is empty. Perfect place to meet someone for a drink or grab a quick bite. Their banh mi's have better ingredients compared to other sandwich shops I've been too. Love their milk teas and the durian smoothie whenever they have durian. Perfect place to study too when the shop is empty. Many people order from here on the morning so there is a line inside the shop to pick up their sandwiches, so you may have to wait a little longer in the mornings. It is a family run business and I'm glad it's still standing. All races and ethnicities are welcomed here. I've never heard any negative remarks for the years I've been here.

Mit D.

Yelp
Not very good banh mi. Don't go there that's all I have to say. Just don't waist your money

Jordan L.

Yelp
The staff is super nice, they welcome you in and are very helpful and polite. The place is very clean and it has a cozy feel. The food is amazing, the banh mi is very reasonable priced. The prices for the banh mis are about $3.75 and just one of them can fill you up for the whole day. They have me coming back every other day.
