"The Highland coffee shop-bar-venue works as a day-into-early-evening-long space. There’s coffee and food (in the form of snacks, pizza, tacos, sandwiches, and quesadillas), as well as Wi-Fi and nighttime events like concerts and open mics. There are indoor and outdoor dine-in areas." - Nadia Chaudhury

Awesome chi with lavender!!! Also, awesome mud in my chi drink! I was there with my bf for a gig he was in. Really cool little music/coffee venue. Will return 💯 I didn't have their food, so I can't rate that. It could have been a bit cleaner, but it gets a lot of traffic, especially for it's size.

Google
this is hands down the best coffee shop to work from in my opinion. Their food selection is vast, customization to their drinks AND food is top tier, and the atmosphere and comfy booths & seats are perfect for me when working remotely. There's also easy access via bike lane, a bus stop out front, a short walk from the nearby metro, and ample parking. Highly recommend. And on a personal note, customization is really important to me when I spend money somewhere and this is the only place in town I know I can get a toffee nut caramel macchiato.

Keep Austin Weird! This is a super rad spot for amazing drinks and the best metal & punk music. They also throw down epic events for the nerdy and counter culture styles. There’s always a welcoming feel here. I have loved the vibe here every time and it just keeps getting better. There’s good food and an extensive bar menu. Love this spot!

UPDATE: Thomas, who I believe is the owner, reached out to me personally to discuss the experience I had with my order through Door Dash. He invited me into their coffee shop to try another mocha. I am so happy I gave it another shot. Their mochas, especially in the mugs, are to die for. However, surprisingly their breakfast tacos were the show for me! I love a good breakfast taco. I've gone a total of 3 times now. Give this place another chance if you've had an iffy experience. I can guarantee it's a one-off occurrence. ORIGINAL: This was my very first time ever trying this place. I ordered a mocha through Door Dash. The item on Door Dash specifies it comes with whipped cream, which it did not. Unfortunately whipped cream is my favorite and what makes or breaks a coffee for me.

I recently visited this coffee shop for the first time and was captivated by their unique blend of coffee, eats, and live music - it's so quintessentially Austin. Visiting mid-morning on a weekday, I was there for coffee and to catch up with a friend. The coffee hit the spot, but there were a couple of hiccups. The open front door let in a 45-degree chill, leaving us quite cold. Perhaps there was a reason for this that I wasn't aware of. Additionally, service was a bit slow. Despite a line of 7-9 people, only one staff member was serving, and the others seemed unperturbed by the growing queue. It might be part of the laid-back vibe here, and regulars might be used to the wait. I'm willing to give it another try,

I tried their green dragon focaccia sandwich and their small black ice coffee. It was around $23 for both. The sandwich came with a side and i choose their chip and queso. I enjoyed the sandwich, but I wish the mushroom on it was cooked. The queso was really good. During the day, I wish the lighting inside be a little bit brighter for those who are doing their work or studying.

Google
I expected less honestly, 😃 but the breakfast tacos definitely stand out from the majority. Brisket was sweet and spicy, hint of tangy. The eggs were scrambled just right, soft and fluffy. Worth a stop when nearby. 🥳

Google
Went for breakfast and it was insanely good. Breakfast tacos are definitely worth it if you can get them before they sell out. GET THE HOT SAUCE! They make it in house and it’s unreal. Great atmosphere. Great people. 10/10.

Yelp
My review is solely for this location as a music venue - I didn't get any food or drink here. It seems like a cool place for that, though. They've got a cool corner stage, enough room for a dance floor, and vendors set up during SXSW. I'd recommend bringing earplugs if you're here for a while - the sound setup is legit and it is loud with a small space. Edit: And clearly by the speed of the response of the business manager, they care about the experience here (sub 30-minutes while I'm still here, man!). Hope to catch future events!

Yelp
Stopped in on my way to work, greeted the staff as I walked in without being greeted back. Made multiple comments with no recognition- so customer service aspect is a bit lacking imo. Ordered a large matcha - the milk absolutely overpowered the matcha, could barely taste it. On the other hand.. a large here is huge! 24oz. Probably won't be back but it was a big matcha for the price!

Yelp
I've had friends tell me to go by this place for years. I came in on a weekday at around 3:00pm, and I think I was the only guest there at the time. Cody was the one who took care of me, I had a lot of questions that day and he was very kind and graceful with me. I ordered an almond milk chai, not my regular order but it was good! There was PLENTY of indoor seating. This place has a great punk-rock old Austin vibe, it would be a great place to go if you're wanting to feel nostalgic. think that this is both a great place to work during the day, and also could have a cool scene at night; I want to come back for live music or an event.

Yelp
Bacon Banger is my favorite. And the guacamole is made fresh everyday. A creative space for Austinites.

Yelp
This was my first time to visit and loved their concept of coffee, eats and live music. Very Austin and I appreciate the hustle. I came in for coffee and to meet a friend mid morning on a weekday. Coffee was good, but a couple of things didn't work well. One was they had the front door open and it was 45 degrees outside so we were super cold. Maybe there was a reason i wasn't aware off. Also, they were slow behind the counter. One person working with a long 7-9 person line. There were other staff, but no one was bothered by the customer line. Maybe it is just the vibe and regulars expect to wait. I'll give them another chance.

Yelp
Me and my coworker stopped in here for a quick bite this morning and left satisfied. I got the breakfast club which was sooo good. It took a little longer than I was expecting but nothing crazy, just something to know if you stop in. This is such an interesting spot though! Coffee shop, bar, and they have live events all the time. Super interesting place.

Yelp
Decided to check it out because my husband played at this joint years ago before we're about to leave Austin permanently. Typical atx hipster, overhyped and overpriced BS. Came here with an appetite (we train powerlifting) so needless to say we over ordered because that's how we're used to eating a big breakfast. I barely touched my food. Way over salted, to the point where you could tell they twisted the cap off and dumped it. Could feel the crystals crunching on my teeth through every bite. Muffin wasn't moist at all, more crumbly than anything, not sweet and tasted more like a scone than a muffin. Sucks to be a former baker who knows the difference, I guess. I don't know if they make all their stuff in house but they really need to hire more experienced chefs. I'm no Gordon Ramsey either but damn, I can cook, bake, and be a better barista all at once (for way less than $60 for two people) than what they seem to take so much pride in. There's a reason the first thing you learn in culinary school are all the different methods of cooking an egg. You mess that up, you're not only a bad cook but you literally messed up someone's entire day with a bad breakfast. Way to leave us with a horrid taste in our mouths before we leave this wretched and forsaken city. In addition, I came back into the restaurant to ask for a refund and overheard the manager saying how he "wishes the place was full of people like it used to". Put a bit more effort into the food you overcharge for, and don't just cover up the crack on the front door with colored tape and make it look like a crafty "explosion" to be quirky about it and get a laugh out of people. How about being a grown business owner?

Yelp
Time for a post-pandemic update. While they still offer coffee and baked goods and sometimes more food items, Kick Butt's music focus has morphed into a much harder, louder scene that makes it feel and smell more like a bar than a coffee shop with music. Most of the bands seem to be punk or hardcore, with an occasional rock show. Not my scene, but it may be yours. The sound system is powerful enough for a room four times the size of this club, with an array of speakers both hanging and tucked under and in front of the stage that literally vibrate the floor and walls. The focus appears to be on producing videos of the live shows, which they play afterward on the mounted TVs and on their YouTube channel. But the end effect for the attendees is that this is an extremely loud club. Earplugs may not be enough if you're sensitive to very high decibels. I've been seeing live music my entire life and always wear earplugs, but it was still painfully loud for me. Many of us spent half the evening or more out front, where they have a few tables and speakers hung up so you can still hear the music, but it was a bummer not to be able to watch the show we came to see. Fair warning. They don't serve hot food during shows, just drinks and whatever baked good are in the display case, so plan ahead if you want to eat a meal before the show. I'm fairly certain it's still just a coffee shop with a somewhat edgy vibe during the daytime hours, and the proximity to ACC and I-35 makes it convenient for those in the area.

Yelp
My original review still stands--just want to add some shout-outs: Muffins! Yum, yum, yum! Fresh! Moist! So good. Service--top notch! You won't be treated poorly here. Good people are working here.

Tressa M.

Yelp
Their vegan donuts are so delicious.. their coffees are great as well. Definitely a hole in the wall place but such a cool ambiance. I really want to take a class here and then have coffee! I also enjoyed the barista! He was energetic and funny! Thank you for the vegan options! I will be back!

Jen R.

Yelp
Very Austin feel of a coffee shop! Love the vibe, music, and feel going on. Great service from the barista working first. Coffee was pretty good, nothing special (they use Monin) syrup but their breakfast tacos are good! Would be really cool to come back and see a show here one day!

Spencer D.

Yelp
Rad spot to catch a punk show and grab a drink or two. Stopped in to catch a show and grabbed a few cocktails. Cool spot to catch some of the Austin punk scene. Be aware the kitchen closes before the music starts so if you are feeling a bit munchie you might have to head across the street.

Katie C.

Yelp
Super good coffee & lots of fun breakfast options. It's very close to my job so I usually order delivery but food is always warm & rarely have an error in my order.

Rob H.

Yelp
Let me start by saying the 5 star reviews for the tacos....all lies! These "tacos" are what nightmares are made of. We'll get to that in a minute. When you walk in your hit with them smell of patchouli. I mean it's strong. This place looks, smells, and feels more like a hippie head shop. Against my better judgement, I got some tacos. They are premade. The older lady told me "if you don't like them, you come back and tell me about it! People loves these. They sell out everyday". Yeah well you're full of shit honey! You throw them out everyday. She then asked if I want hot sauce which I did cause this is Texas. Their hot sauce is nasty bbq sauce. No heat and leaves a bad taste in your mouth. The tacos? Bad....pretty sure powdered eggs, store bought tortillas, plastic cheese. There's a 7-11 across the street. I'm sure they have better anything and everything.

Mike S.

Yelp
Good drinks but no prices listed anywhere in the shop or on the menus. No bueno. No bueno. Update: Well Thomas maybe you should train your staff about this. I didn't see any QR code and when I asked the cashier about price they said "not available." Maybe they should be trained to point out the QR. And I've got 20/20 vision so maybe your QR should be more obvious because for me it isn't fat enough. Yes I think the majority of us live in a world where we are still interested to see the prices of what we purchase. Otherwise we view your business very suspiciously.

S S.

Yelp
Highly recommend the cold brew coffee. I bought a quart to take home and blend. Smooth and rich bodied. For a cookie fix there is a large array all neatly packaged and large enough to share with four friends... or just yourself My fav is the Wham Bam an English Toffee, chocolate chunk cookie. The AnimePop!, filled with white chocolate, macadamia nuts and a topping of rainbow marshmallows and Fruity Pebbles brings out the best manners in my granddaughter. Please and Thank-you for the cookie!

Kasy S.

Yelp
I just realized that I hadn't updated my review! I absolutely love this coffee shop. The baked goods, cookies and tacos are all top notch. I regularly crave their tacos, especially with their extra hot sauce! My wife always gets one of their seasonally flavored lattes, and is never disappointed. I am still absolutely hooked on their pecan cold brew. Delicious and with enough caffeine to wake the dead. Add to that the consistently friendly service, a personable owner and non-pretentious vibes? These folks have a well-deserved 5-stars from me and the position of being one of our favorite coffee shops in town.

John C.

Yelp
Very bad matcha latte. It was essentially just warm milk. Barely had matcha powder at all. If you want to waste $6 on warm milk this is the place. Will not be going back.

Sasa P.

Yelp
Cool small venue for open mic nights and comedy nights. No cover charge either! They had a huge selection of interesting gourmet cookies. Lots of different coffee drinks too, and some with alcohol which is a fun combo. Overall a good experience, but I will say half the place is so dimly lit I felt uncomfortable sitting in that area. There was practically a dark hallway of seating, which was all that was available when we showed up. A little improvement to the ambience and this place would've been a 5 star.

thom w.

Yelp
Usually a regular for the Sunday night open mic..Today tasted the breakfast "EVERYTHING"bagel-was delighted with the taste, presentation, and smiling service. The cook creator himself came out with a flourish of goodwill, and this added to the pleasant ambience of a most auspicious welcome. By chance,Tom Goerhing was at the counter, dealing with multiple orders for this very popular venue-bands came in to promote their shows,GRUBHUB drivers picked up their orders, and many customers came specifically for the ambience.A conscious atmosphere of gentle conversations in a quiet space added to the taste factor.Their whole menu is a delight! I have tasted their home made pizza before, and enjoyed every slice! As for the KICK BUTT GIANT COOKIES-a taste treat.Loved the food experience-enjoy the venue vibe!100% to be recommended..

Skyler B.

Yelp
I love Kick Butt!! Such a cool spot. The baristas and the owner are always SO nice and friendly, it makes me want to come here more often. Their pecan cold brew (they call it black ice) is some of the best cold brew I've ever had with a full pecan flavor.

Jay I.

Yelp
This place is a true Austin Institution. Coffee, food and a terrific venue. I've seen some world class acts on this small stage. They know when the target audience from coffeehouse to music venue shifts. It's awesome. Places like this are vanishing in Austin... this is an important venue to keep alive!

J P.

Yelp
Love the vibe, love the tunes, love the drinks/cookies. One of the last holdouts in this sad, depressing city.

Peggy B.

Yelp
After all the years ... still the best, still the greatest, still the friendliest: still the finest!!! I went in for a cup of black coffee. The atmosphere was refreshing & alive with music! The owner: Mr. Thomas walks in & comments "where is your green tea frappe"?

Darius R.

Yelp
This place sucks! They're not consistent with their business in any way. The manager is a complete ass and they're not good to their customer and charge a fee for their horrible service

Shannon L.

Yelp
New to Austin I saw a video online about this unique local coffee shop that also has punk shows ! couldn't wait to check it out Who doesn't love music & coffee We got sandwiches chips and salsa coffee and enjoyed listening to exploited one of my husbands favorite Punk bands ! Can't wait to come back and enjoy a show ! Awesome experience!

Ray R.

Yelp
For band shows at night, the restroom situation was rough. I did not, and will never buy a drink here because I don't want to have to deal with that ridiculous restroom situation. I almost bailed to pee out back, but swerved back inside after the smell was confirmation that that just happens daily. Yay peeing on the street.

Beth A.

Yelp
Stopped in while visiting Austin. The shop did not smell of coffee walking in which was a surprise. All staff was friendly and accommodating. Huge shout out to Chris aka master barista, for whipping up a fantastic on the spot coffee to match my taste! I had to go back inside to shake this man's hand! Wish we had been there at a later time to check out the anime store next door.

Wayne N.

Yelp
Now this is as Austin of a coffee shop as it gets. Hipster vibe, good coffee and breakfast tacos. What more do you need? The decor is pretty awesome, they have music some times and even play recordings of karate from next door. That's unique in and off itself that's worth the stop. Coffee wise, it's good. They have a good amount of drink variety and syrups to make whatever you desire. Tacos look small but they are definitely packed. Not sure what sausage they use but it's very flavorful and they don't skimp. They also have a secret menu worth checking out.

Kate Z.

Yelp
Great cafe with quiet mornings and festive evenings. Their coffee is just strong enough and a little acidic. I met the owner and his sister (hi Thomas and Joy) and they were very friendly. I appreciate the seating space and the abundance of soft seats. I will come back for their breakfast tacos and monstrous cookies!

Anna S.

Yelp
It was all fine except the fact that there's an automatic tip added to your order unless you back up and modify it. I just ordered a coffee for just over $3 and the total order was over $7!!! Be careful because they are out for unreasonable tip amounts. Not nice!!

Nikki B.

Yelp
Heads up that the staff doesn't wear masks during stage 5 restrictions. I went in today and ordered a sandwich. I had to wait to order while the barista was making drinks which wasn't a big deal, but might matter if you're in a hurry. Barista wasn't wearing a mask and didn't greet me. I ordered my sandwich and she said it came with a side. When I asked what the sides were, the barista just responded that they were listed on the menu in a super annoyed tone. When I tried to add a drink to my order, the barista said she had to close out my sandwich order before she could take my drink order. I ordered my drink and she kept interrupting me to ask questions I had already answered in my order. I waited to get my sandwich and the girl who brought it out from the kitchen was masked. I ate outside as they have some small tables adjacent to the door. My sandwich and coffee were pretty good, but overall the experience was really lackluster. -barista not wearing a mask -barista definitely did not want to be bothered and was not helpful -sandwich was mostly lettuce -container for salsa too small to dip chips in +kitchen staff was masked +sandwich was tasty +they have outdoor seating +they have pecan flavored cold brew +no one hassled me about my service dog and the barista did offer me a bit of whipped cream for her

Vincent W.

Yelp
Nice coffee joint. Decent vibe with a smooth but robust medium roast. Fast service. They have food & alcoholic beverages available.

Kaeleigh S.

Yelp
Tiny coffees for big prices. Barista was not super friendly. Latte tasted burnt and bitter and overly sweet. Hopefully can come back and maybe have a better experience.

MS S.

Yelp
Does Kick Butt! Great coffee and yummy pastries. Service is excellent - very welcoming staff. Interesting people hang out here. Location isn't great but it's worth the trip if you're in the area for morning/afternoon brew and food. Cool destination at night as a music venue.

Ilana O.

Yelp
Only stopped in for a short trip on my way to the festivities surrounding SXSW, but thought it was great - particularly the pecan cold brew- It was so refreshingly nutty and delicious. I also inhaled the yogurt/chocolate banana parfait with granola, and was thankful to incorporate a more healthful dish into what had been primarily a taco and bbq diet the day prior. I think I paid $11 for the entire breakfast. Reasonable and delightful.

Mandy W.

Yelp
Coffee and food is great, everyone is nice. I love that there is an app to order in advance but 2/3 times there was an issue but didn't know until I picked up they fixed it and made everything quick just sucks because the app says order complete and doesn't say something is out. Other than that food, coffee, service is great and if you are hanging out there is a Pokéstop here too.

Tomas R.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my experience here. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of downtown, it was literally a four minute drive from the gym as I was looking for a place I could get some work done and get a workout in. (I'm a weird person I know) What I really enjoyed about this place is how calm it was during the time I was there. They serve food until 3pm so I was able to order a Cesar Salad and added chicken to it. The chicken was at an additional cost but they served quite a bit of it and it had a nice fajita-like seasoning to it. My only suggestion is for the salad to have shaved parmesan flakes instead of shredded. (not a big deal though) If I wasn't trying to be healthy I would've gone for their chips and queso or the round rock donuts lol. The coffee was quite delicious and I enjoyed my iced latte. They also have soy milk as an alternative which is a win in my book. You'll also want to make sure to not throw away your receipt as it holds the code for the bathroom and the wifi password. It was a great experience and if I'm ever in the neighborhood, I'll make sure to be back!

Gigi T.

Yelp
Definitely the worst Latte I've ever had. I ordered 2 with oat milk and it was really pretty awful. It even has a weird smell, but it wasn't as strange as the taste. I ended up dumping both. If I lived closer I'd ask for my money back. Maybe they should change their name to just Butt Coffee. Just an idea.

Julius Patrick V.

Yelp
Not bad coffee, slightly pricier than I expected for the size. But I loved the vibe of this place (great music and space), and they have a corner setup for performances (I came in early so there wasn't anything going on).

Leah H.

Yelp
Not the best coffee and slightly overpriced. Went in for morning coffee and I think my drip was over $3. It also has an interesting smell...

Diana G.

Yelp
I hate to write negative reviews. We were on our way to another bakery actually, but stopped because of the name. My guy got a large cafe de olla, but he didn't like it at all. Pretty pricey for a little over $4 for a cup of coffee. He actually only took a few sips and tossed the rest.

Jackolyn F.

Yelp
The baked goods, tacos, service and space are great quality. There's never a challenge with parking and always something going on with their love events. Get one of the giant cookies- they're delish!

Kim K.

Yelp
Been to a couple shows at Kick Butt, but right now we've been getting a lot of their coffee since... no shows, hah. I love small venues and kick butt fills slot perfectly. Decent sound, sometimes you luck Into seating, and really good drink selection. Solid. Most of the time - the coffee is stellar. However, it's variable depending on who makes it. The same drink will taste vastly different from day to day. Which is great as long as it tastes good! But, sometimes I wish there was a bit more consistency.

Jill C.

Yelp
We have been to Kick Butt many times over the last two years since moving nearby. This is the perfect local coffee shop. They have really good coffee (try the pecan cold brew!), delicious food and housemade baked goods, and they host a wide array of cool, quirky shows. The thing thay really pushes them over the top is that even though they do a LOT of things, which usually means they're all kind of eh, everything we've had is really good quality. Good salsa for the tacos, good bread for the avocado toast, good beans for the coffee. They do it all and they do it well. Love to have this place in our neighborhood and would recommend to anyone.

Whitney L.

Yelp
The measures taken to fix my mistake... Went into Kick Butt today for the first time in years intending to buy a particular bag of coffee to take as a "gift of Austin" for some coffee enthusiasts on a trip to Memphis next week, also hopefully looking forward to introducing them to former Austinite, now Memphian Naiman of Rigby Roastery, who's well known to KBC. I'd gone onto the KBC online store ahead of time thinking "Easy peasy, I've found what I wanted. I can swing by while I have someone to help" [I can't drive due to vision loss] After not being able to find it, only seeing other roasts, I spoke with the owner, Thomas, and he offered several options for me on how to get what I'm looking for in a timely manner. He didn't have to. It was my mistake in not knowing online and in store inventory may differ. Could have been something I missed visually. Who knows. But the help offered was the extra mile of a great business including taking the time to make a bag in house. Looking forward to sharing it with friends.

Rick L.

Yelp
Oh, breakfast tacos, I have seen your light and it shines on me forever. I was in Austin for a few days for a poetry festival and discovered Kick Butt Coffee as they were nice enough to host several of the events. I understand you can't walk 10 feet in Austin without tripping over a place that serves breakfast tacos, and I'm okay with that reality. Besides at the airport on the way home, Kick Butt Coffee were the only ones I had in the city so I don't really have anything to compare them to, but these were delicious. They offered 3 vegetarian options, A black bean and potato, an egg cheddar, and potato, and a yummy special which added avocado and spinach to the previous. According to their website, they make only so many and may run out depending how busy they are. I got lucky when I showed up...it wasn't very busy and there were vegetarian tacos a-plenty available for me. I had the "yummy" special, and the egg, cheddar and potato. These are soft tacos which weren't so much in terms of presentation, but which were absolutely delicious, especially with a little bit of the spicy salsa. I want more! Kick Butt is also a full fledged coffee house with a lunch menu with lots of choices for vegetarians. (Order at the counter.) And perhaps most importantly, the coffee was excellent. All good things to a coffee-house that serves good coffee. If I lived in Austin I'd be a regular here at all times of the day.

Olivia M.

Yelp
Oh yeah, I get it, this is a really cool spot! I came here not for the coffee, which I heard was kick-butt, but for a book release event that showcased Joe Brundidge's poetry collection entitled: "Element 615" on a Sunday afternoon-- nice job Joe B. It's a large, karate-themed coffee shop with plenty of booth, bar and table seating for a pretty good amount of people, but still has an intimate feel. At the front of the shop there's a stage where performances such as spoken word poetry take place. Relax and take in the entertainment while you enjoy, in my case: red wine, water and giant, decadent cookies. OMG, the massive cookies (chocolate chip and chocolate chunk and mint) are a must try! I'll be back for the coffee and the food, and will be sure to add to my review at that time.
