Kie-Gol-Lanee Mexican restaurant to open in Logan Square | Eater Chicago

"Opening in August at 2901 W. Diversey Avenue, the second location from the same family will continue the Uptown restaurant’s celebrated Oaxacan plates, including tamales steamed in banana leaves and garnachas, plus tlayudas topped with options such as thinly sliced salt-cured cecina, steak, chorizo, or zucchini and mushrooms. The dinner menu will feature regional proteins like lamb shank, quail, rabbit, and grasshoppers, while the new site will add weekly specials and weekend breakfast plates. The bar is developing playful cocktails—a tres leches martini, an Oaxacan-style old-fashioned, and a tepache-based drink with grasshoppers—and will carry Huésped and Clan 55 mezcal from Santa María Quiegolani. Design elements, including a mural of brightly colored alebrijes and a blue-and-pink palette, aim to evoke the warmth of an Oaxacan home." - Brenda Storch

Google
Pricy food but it's super delicious and great for a special dinner out! They have delicious cocktails including the maracuya, my favorite! Everything I've tried here has been great although I think I like it more for dinner than for brunch. There are several cool items on the menu that are harder to find at most Chicago Mexican restaurants, like tlayudas, and the tamales that are in the Oaxacan style. Definitely a good opportunity to try something new if you haven't had Oaxacan food before. Great for groups, birthday dinners, date night, or a lovely night out with a friend or friends!

Delicious 🤤. Came in from out of town and couldn’t have been happier with this brunch choice. Everything our table ordered was anmazing including the hot chocolate and cocktails . The service was fantastic and the atmosphere was great.

Wow wow wow! This place is in my neighborhood and I’ve been meaning to try it since they opened. Finally did and it exceeded all expectations. We had margaritas to start, a traditional made with mezcal and the prickly pear. Both were perfect! The trajín on the rim is their own blend and has such a perfect salt ratio. The chips and puréed black bean dip the bring out we’re both fresh and delicious. We shared the Tlacoyo de frijol for our appetizer and then the chuleta de puerco. The Oaxaca cheese inside the pork was amazing. And the sauce on top was the perfect finish to the dish. We finished with their guava nicuatole de temporada, which was a delightful and light way to end the meal. Highly recommend!!

Google
Incredible food! My wife and I were wowed by every dish. We had a mushroom starter and mushroom tomale which were both very flavorful. Our drinks tasted unique and delicious: we had the prickly pear mezcal margarita and the horchata. Our entres were good sized and very tasty. Overall we tried a lot of their traditional dishes which were really interesting. I loved that they are taking inspiration from pre-columbian food. The vibe was pretty chill, good for a date night but not overly fancy. Costs were appropriate to how good the food was. We'll definitely be going back again soon.

Google
Excellent service and food!! We have been for both dinner and brunch, and every meal has been delicious. If you’re going for brunch, highly recommend the pan de elote with carnitas!

Google
My son brought me here for an early dinner and my mind was blown! Everything was outstanding! The tamales were exceptional along with the Garnacha. The Gallintas Al Horno and Arrachera A La Parrilla with mole was perfecto on each dish. Never overpowering but enhancing the meal. The service was also exceptional and never bothersome but were right there if we needed them. This place is a must for your next dining experience.

Google
This place is Absolutely delicious! It’s been a while since I’ve seen a creative menu featuring Mexican dishes I was unfamiliar with and excited to try. It took me a while to figure out what to order and I’m vegetarian (lots of veg options). Everything our table of six ordered was absolutely delicious. Sorry, we ate so quickly that I forgot to take photos. There was lots of sharing and trying each other’s plates. The drinks are phenomenal. I rarely drink except when in Puerto Rico because their mojitos are amazing. My sister ordered a mojito and let me try some, so I ended up ordering my own. Everyone else enjoyed their drinks too-mimosas, margaritas, and mezcal-based cocktails were all fantastic. I will definitely return to this place and recommend to others.

Yelp
We were still reeling from the incredible dining experience at Kie-Gol-Lanee in Logan square though we frequent the original location in Uptown. This authentic Oaxacan gem is a must-visit for anyone craving traditional Mexican flavors. We loved the tamales and the Tlayuda was a game changer. The crispy tortilla, tender cecina meat, black beans and quesillo were melded together in harmony. Luigi, the mixologists and our server at the same time was so talented crafting unique concoctions that perfectly complement the bold flavors of Oaxacan cuisine. The mezcal shots at the end of our dinner culminated our exceptional experience. I highly recommend this place for a different take on Mexican flare.

Yelp
There are 31 states in the country of Mexico. Not every state has its own cuisine, but certainly there are 10 to 15 areas making its own indigenous food. By far my favorite area, making the very best food this country has to offer is Oaxacan cuisine from (of course) the state of Oaxaca (Duh) located in Southern Mexico. Corn and chili peppers are a main staple for this food, but it's their "Mole" sauces that always get my attention! Last night I went to Kie-Gol-Lanee (the one in Logan Square) that served very original Oaxcan food that didn't disappoint. The owners and the people working here are "Spot-on"! We (my wife and I) started our dinner with guacamole and chips then moved on to Enchiladas De Pollo and Camarones a la Diabla; everything brought to our table was fantastic. When we moved to Chicago three years ago from Los Angeles, I thought I would miss all of my East L.A. Mexican restaurants. To my surprise, Chicago not only met my L.A. mexican food expectations, but actually surpassed it. Places like Kie-Gol-Lanee make it a a joy to have here!

Yelp
Came here for brunch w a girlfriend and am glad that Kie-Gol-Lanee opened up a second location here in Logan Square. Items on the lunch/brunch menu all sounded intriguing and I had a hard time choosing what I wanted. I ended up going for the huevos con nopales and my friend got the chilaquiles with chorizo. Appreciated the free chips and bean dip that were on the house and our entrees were massive - we both couldn't finish everything on our plates! My dish came with corn tortillas made in house that i enjoyed- I most likely won't order the same dish as my eggs were overly scrambled and tasted rubbery. Service lagged at times despite it being slow in the restaurant and I had to wave down our server a few times. Overall, I've enjoyed this restaurant during dinner service and I would come back to try out their other brunch/lunch menu items.

Yelp
It was a lovely atmosphere, attentive service, and unique dish options, flavors, choices. My friend and I really enjoyed our nopales + chilaquiles dishes as well as chips + black bean dip offered as appetizer. It was not crowded on the Saturday afternoon that we went and there were so many dishes we wanted to try, I'll want to go again! Great spot for a catchup/casual hang. Averagely priced and/or a bit on the more expensive side for Mexican cuisine, but you're purchasing the thoughtfully curated menu / top notch service. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Super flavorful and delicious! We went for restaurant week and they started us off with margaritas and chips and bean dip. We got the Chorizo Tlayuda and it was light, crunchy, spicy and very filling. I would definitely get this again. Service was super quick and the staff were friendly. Decor was bright and colorful.

Yelp
We came for restaurant week and were pleasantly surprised. It came with a margarita as the first dish. I have not seen anyone do that and loved it. The staff were very attentive and checking in on us. The decor made me feel like I was in Mexico. It made it feel even more authentic. However, back to the food. DELICIOUS. There wasn't anything I didn't like. We came out so full. Would highly recommend.

Yelp
Wow. Just absolutely incredible food that tastes so fresh and delicious. Wonderful service. 10/10 - we'll be back!

Yelp
I was so excited to hear this was coming to Logan. We've dined at the Uptown location and found the food outstanding. We were big fans of Masa Azul and not much since has had staying power until now. Right now it's still flying under the radar and easy to get in, I expect that to change soon. The location has nice, intimate indoors with a small patio on Francisco. We each started witha spicy mezcal margarita. They serve black beans with chips (vegetarian). We opted not to get an appetizer knowing how generous the portions are. Husband ordered the arracherra and I the shrimp diablo. We both thoroughly enjoyed our choices along with the handmade tortillas. There were a few wrinkles in service. Ours was on point, but the table next to us had a different server and was growing impatient. To be fair they were seated when we arrived and ordered after us.

Yelp
The original restaurant had the best food. Not sure what happened to the taste of the cuisine, something changed. I hope to return someday in the future and have a tasty meal.

Yelp
Really wonderful and unique cocktails and food, stellar service. My sister heard about this place and was intrigued by the specials. We made the 45 minute drive from the burbs on a Sunday evening and it was completely worth the drive. We enjoyed their lovely patio, and parking was easy. Lots of great vegetarian options. Portions were very generous. The pic is of the specials..we had the stuffed acorn squash and quesadillas, both were excellent and cravable. We also had the special cocktails and loved them. The folks working here were so kind and attentive.

Yelp
Wanted to bring visitors to Chicago to a non-touristy place. And this was the perfect choice. The restaurant is nicely set up. The staff was attentive. And the food was outstanding. The mole's were delicious. We had a wide variety of meals and all were great. Really enjoyed our visit.

Yelp
Came here with my parents and dined on the patio! Everything was delicious - ordered the huitlacoche quesadillas, quail dish, pork chops and enchiladas.

Claudia S.

Yelp
I really recommend this place. Small and very personalized service and very welcoming. The service was excellent, and the staff speaks indigenous language in the kitchen . Beautiful . Food are great.

Yelp
Welcome to the neighborhood! My friend and I ate at Kie Gol Lanee for brunch on Sunday. We shared the french toast topped with fruit and tres leches sauce and 2 tamales. We had the chicken mole rojo tamale and the pork with mole verde tamale. Everything was excellent!! I can't wait to go back and try some more dishes, but I might have to get the same thing again because it was so good! :)

Yelp
I've been to Mexico City several times and also to Oaxaca - both cities are food meccas that I plan to keep visiting often and so I was excited to see this restaurant to open a location close to me for Oaxacan style cuisine. We got two prix fixe meals so we could try a variety of things - we got a Oaxacan style pork mole verde tamale, nopales, enchiladas de pollo, barbacoa de borrego, tres leches and flan. The tamale wrapped in a banana leaf melted in my mouth. The barbacoa was falling off the bone. Everything I ate was incredible - flavorful, cooked to perfection. The server was fast and friendly as were the whole staff. Candlelit inside with music at an audible but pleasant volume. The food held up to some of the higher end restaurants I've been to in Oaxaca. They have a good selection of mezcal - we tried the tobala - smoky and smooth. Also had some champurrado that was lovely. Highly recommend this restaurant!

Yelp
The space is pleasant and even charming with several nicely done murals in a very colorful Mexican style decorating the walls. The staff are pleasant and likable and efficient. The food was marvelous. We were hoping for unusually good but what we got was well beyond our highest expectations, The attention to detail in the kitchen was exceptional. There may be a magician hiding back there in the kitchen. Every aspect of every dish we tried was done to perfection. I ordered the Tlayudos vegetarianos and she tried the Quesadillas and we finished with an enticing dessert called Pastel de Calabaza. Even the side salad (normally a throwaway dish of no consequence) was superb . We are vegans (of the wobbly variety - we consider shrimp an honorary vegetable) and there were several unusually appealing vegan/veggie possibilities. The background music was well chosen and kept at a moderate level so conversation was easily possible. It has not been open long. Get there before word spreads and the crowds start surging in.
