The Best Restaurants in Echo Park | Eater LA

"Local legend Kien Giang Bakery has been open along Echo Park Avenue since 1980. Neighborhood denizens know to stop in for Vietnamese sandwiches made on freshly baked baguettes, along with an ever-changing selection of sweet and savory Vietnamese and European pastries. The seasonal mooncakes (usually available in August and September) and Lunar New Year delicacies are especially noteworthy." - Rebecca Roland

Meet 10 Of LA’s Best Asian-Owned Bakeries

"Echo Park has changed a lot since 1980, but Kien Giang Bakery (aka KG Bakery) has maintained its presence on Echo Park Blvd for the past 41 years. The Hyunh family, who still run the business today, came to the US in the 1970s when, according to daughter Jennifer, there were fewer Asians and little access to Asian food in the northern suburbs. Her grandparents would make pastries and cakes out of their home, and they decided to move to Echo Park to be closer to Chinatown’s markets where they’d sell their cakes. With the bulk of their business coming from custom cake orders, the bakery took a big hit at the start of the pandemic as parties and weddings were canceled. Hyunh said they had to shut down twice in the past year, but as it becomes safer to gather, she hopes they’ll be able to focus on what they do best: helping serve all kinds of celebrations, from cakes for quinceñeras to traditional pastries for Asian holidays. Order this: A custom cake, Vietnamese sandwiches, or mooncakes for the Mid-Autumn Festival." - with warm welcome, leslie yeh

Google
I tasted food at this Vietnamese Bakery for the first time in December 2024, when i was visiting my son in LA. I had ordered their vegan spare ribs Bahn Mi sandwich and the yan yin drink . I was floored by the Bahn me , crunchy bread, juicy and flavourful filling, and fresh salad. The taste lingered on . So today , I could visit again during lunch time, … the ambience is lovely , well lit , clean, cheerful. there is adequate seating outdoor, Parking available , which is so convenient. Service is superb, the girl at the counter is very sweet and welcoming , guides you as per your requirement, Today I repeated my order and its a ten on ten , the Dpare ribs Bahn Mi and Vietnamese cold coffee was also good. Will visit again if I get the opportunity. It’s a Hidden Gem in LA ❤️

Google
If you are in the area of Echo Park, then you have to stop by for their fresh crunchy banh mi sandwich and a cake of any kind💖 first time here since I was working in the area and needed a break. The service was attentive, kind and fast. The menu simple and delicious. I only got a pic of the cake because I already ate the sandwich. The private patio is clean and cute, AND they have parking!

Google
Super yummy bakery with vegan and non vegan bahn mi! I’ve gotten the vegan pork, chicken, and spare rib, and they’ve all been incredible! Always friendly service and there is seating both inside and outside. They also have a lot of desserts although sadly not many of them are vegan, but they look delicious! Definitely a spot worth checking out if you’re hungry in echo park!

Google
We absolutely loved this place. Never knew it was there. Such a gem to find. It's kinda hidden so easily missed unfortunately but great service and yummy sandwiches and drinks. With the combo you get a wonderful slice of cake also. Must visit and try

Google
I stopped by Kien Giang Bakery and was so impressed! I ordered the turkey and cheese croissant, which was absolutely delicious—especially with the pickled carrots and radish that gave it a banh mi twist. I got the combo, which came with a dessert and a drink. The guava and cheese pastry was amazing—flaky, sweet, and perfectly balanced. I also tried the green Thai tea and loved it. Everything was reasonably priced, and the portions were generous. Definitely recommend if you’re in the area and craving something flavorful and fresh!

Yelp
I've walked by this place for years. Idk what came over me but I decided to check it out today. Super tasty you guys. Best banh mi I've had for a minute. Chill patio as well, just a great little family run business. I'll be stopping by here a lot more

Yelp
So this just happened. This morning I was craving for a Vietnamese sandwich and found this place near by on Yelp. I drove there, parked my car (they have a plenty of parking) and as soon as I walked in there were three young workers there. I was looking at their sandwich menu and one of the workers said to others "do you wanna make a sandwich"l?" as if they do not want to make anything. One of them even did not look happy at all even they said "I can make it." I was thinking if I should be niche to them just order whatever i wanted and walked out. But I decided not to spend my money to those young rude workers. It was really a bad energy in which I received from the store and the workers. Too bad their sandwich menu looked really good but I won't try theirs any more.

Yelp
This bakery has been here for many years, finally stopped in for a birthday cake and a Vietnamese sandwich. The bakery has sandwiches, cakes that can be decorated, and other sweets. The service was super quick, the bakery is super clean, and there are a ton of parking spots. All items are mainly Vietnamese and Asian inspired. they also have outdoor seating with benches. The outdoor dining tables are filled with Vietnamese inspired umbrellas and a shaded area. I will definitely be back for more Vietnamese sandwiches or if I need a special order cake you can order specialty cake or they have cakes waiting to be decorated for walk-in.

Yelp
Excellent bánh trung thu! We love them so much. We will come back for more. Thank you!

Yelp
My go to spot for good soft cakes. Last minute cakes as well. They always have something fresh and in stock. Had many cakes from this place from my childhood since it's pretty close to home. I buy my daughter's classmates and teachers the mooncakes when it's that season too. Big mooncake selection and different prices.

Yelp
Just some updates on pricing for my own notes to refer back: cupcakes are $3 each (vanilla, chocolate, red velvet)-must pre order; 1/3 sheet $60; 1/4 sheet $40 (add $15 if you want to make it red velvet); 10" round $70; 12" round $120.

Jose R.

Yelp
The best cakes ever moist and delicious Service was amazing and very professional and helpful

Yelp
I'm really blown away by their cakes, especially the effort put into designing it for my daughter's birthday. They used real flowers to decorate it, and many guests couldn't help but comment on how it looked too good to cut, almost like a fancy wedding cake. And guess what? It tasted amazing too! I'd definitely recommend them and would order from them again for sure.

Yelp
I grew up to having delicious cakes from KG bakery for my birthday for as long as I could remember. Sponge cake with a flavored whip icing, filled with your choice of fresh fruit. Yum! Seasonally, they bake fresh banh tet and banh chung for Lunar New Year, must preorder about 2-3 weeks in advance. My mom will only eat banh chung from here. The glutinous rice is cooked perfectly. Lots of filling and the flavoring is on point. I no longer live in the area, but will drive out from the IE just for these. The bakery is a bit hidden as it's pushed back from the street front and can be easily missed. They share a space with a law office. They have their own private parking lot in front of their shop, however, there's only enough space for about 4 cars. The family that owns the bakery are nice. I had no issues with my pre order, and pick up. I will definitely continue to make that trek out from the IE.

Yelp
I've haven't been to KG in a hot minute, but I'm so glad I came back to visit and get some banh mi sandwiches! The ingredients melt together perfectly, the jalapenos are spicy, the pickled veggies are crunchy and delicious and the cilantro is fresh! As soon as I bit into it, I kicked myself for waiting so long to come back. Also, the service was fast and I got to smell the bakery as I waited, so all in all, the perfect place. I'd recommend grabbing a sandwich and some baked goods and heading down to Echo Park or to a Dodger game. 10/10 recommend and I can't wait to come back

Yelp
Have had a few custome cakes done here in the past, but it had been a while! Went in on a Wednesday for a Sunday cake & was happy that they were able to take my request. I went in with a visual of what I wanted just tweaked it a like. I was amazed how perfectly they matched it! The cakes are soft & not too sweet! Service is quick & they are super friendly! Pricing is just right, with these cakes being popular now I thought it would run me high.
google avatar

Jasmine S.

Yelp
Love the vegan banh mi! Prefer the vegan pork. Would definitely recommend both. Make sure to call in advance to order the sandwiches. Also if you pay cash it's cheaper.

Yelp
Amazing cakes!!! They made my daughter's 6th birthday cake and it came out even better than I imagined! The colors came out perfect for our venue and theme! Thank you!!

Yelp
Subs are delicious and cakes are marvelous. Service is quick and friendly. Locations is small but very welcoming and has seating outside as well.

Samantha D.

Yelp
Everything we've tried, both sweets and savories, have been awesome. The staff is super friendly, and it's been relatively quiet every time I've been there. The icing on the cake is that they have a parking lot.

Krystle W.

Yelp
Jennifer is so sweet. I try to come once a week for their sandwiches. But even when I don't come for awhile she still remembers me and my order. Love this place
google avatar

Yelp
This bakery baked all of my childhood birthday cakes! I try to visit as often as possible for their bánh mì, pastry, and moon cake!

Dana B.

Yelp
Perfect banh mi rolls, friendly neighborhood vibe, lovely shaded outdoor patio. Got the Nem sandwich combo, which hit all the right marks: shatteringly crisp but soft bread, barbecued pork, crunchy marinated daikon and carrot, and a little hit of hot with slices of jalapeño. $13 cash gets you sandwich, drink and their homemade dessert. Look for the steamed banana "cake," it's a treat.

Anthony C.

Yelp
An Echo Park staple with the greatest cakes and bread. Ive been coming here since I was a child and it brings me so much joy to patron a long standing family owned business. They're so friendly and always have an awesome selection of treats!
google avatar

Yelp
I heard about this place a few times because I'm a sandwich freak and boy am I glad I gave it a try. Sure enough I passed by here a million times but it's tucked away so I never saw it. If you are into Bahn Mi you should come check this place out! I took the Vietnamese version and I loved it. Everything is fresh, the bread is perfect. I know I'm gonna come here again to try more.

Yelp
My banh mi was delicious! They just reopened after 8 1/2 months of renovations. I stopped in on a Tuesday so it was quiet/slow and they were out of many items. The owner said it's much more busy and well-stocked on the weekends, but I didn't mind it at all. Banh mi was was fresh and tasted great.

Yelp
We've been comparing strawberry cakes between downtown to San Gabriel Valley and so far, Kien Giang Bakery is by far our favorite! It's perfectly light, fluffy, moist, and balanced with the best strawberry to cream ratio. We recently ordered a 1/3 sheet strawberry cake for an event and it was DELICIOUS! It was also way bigger (taller) than we had expected! Their cake server also works incredibly well. We'd been eating leftover strawberry cake every day for the past week and yet, when we were asked to bring a dessert for a Christmas event a week later, our first thought was to go back to KG Bakery and get another cake! They were so kind with our last minute request on Christmas Eve and set aside a cake for us. When someone else picked up the strawberry pineapple cake by accident, they were very helpful about it and let us buy the strawberry banana cake they had instead. Even though this cake wasn't designed to be a Christmas cake, they totally made magic happen! The new strawberry banana cake we ended up buying was adorable! This place also has delicious banh mi and Vietnamese coffee! We used to live around the corner and stop by often for their lunch combo and get the vegetarian banh mi when we were pescatarian --perfect for taking to the Hollywood Bowl or other picnic events! The pork banh mi we recently tried was also yummy! The coffee is sooooooo good. The mooncakes are always awesome too! We wish we still lived closer!

Yelp
The meat pie pastry is delicious ! I received a strawberry shortcake , 8inch. I bought this cake for 2 people, but it was enough for 10 at least. The strawberries were fresh, and I enjoyed the whipped frosting, but I think next time I will ask for less frosting. The cake was perfectly spongy and light, a cake that is not too sweet. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. I highly recommend this bakery that has been around since 1980!

Yelp
Great place to get a banh mi after hiking Elysian Park! It's literally a 1-2 minute drive. I've come here a couple times for the vegetarian banh mi, and they're great! The bread is always fresh, and the veggie meats are flavorful. You can also get the sandwich as a combo with a slice of their variety of cakes (e.g., mocha, tres leches) and drink. Very friendly!
google avatar

Jane B.

Yelp
This is a bakery with a magical power - banh mi! We drove to this spot to pick up the "best" Vietnamese sandwich in the area. It's a nondescript bakery but once you lay your eyes on the French bread you know. This is the foundation of an excellent sandwich. We ordered both Vietnamese originals with pate and a vegetarian. Each of them were amazing. The ingredients were fresh and tasty. We couldn't ignore the amazing pastries and picked up croissants and meat pies. Worth every calorie. The French influence in Vietnam created so many yummy combinations. My favorite is by far banh mi! Enjoy!

Yelp
We been coming for many years to get their cakes its always on point we got half a sheet cake for my daughter's 18th birthday 40 minutes drive from Long Beach

Yelp
their vegan banh mis are to DIE FOR. i know a lot of people will say that there are other places to get cheaper ones but i've yet to see them. they are always perfect and their bread is always fresh. and for the price you pay ??? SOLD FOR. i love the pork and my partner loves the citrus spare rib. both are bomb. 11/10 highly recommend. !!!

Yelp
Kien Giang Bakery is the perfect answer for a traditional Banh Mi sandwich with no frills. It is what it is and it's pretty damn good for what it is. It's refreshing that it's not a Lee's Sandwich (which is still a good place to get a banh mi, don't get me wrong) but with that kind of quality. The bread is probably equally important as the filling when it comes to this Vietnamese sandwich and at Kien Giang Bakery, they do not disappoint with this detail. When you are holding your banh mi and you can tell the bread is crunchy before you take your first bite, you know that it already passed the first test. Then you take a bite and are teleported to Vietnam with that first taste of pork marinated with fish sauce. The pickled vegetables might be an added incentive to balance out the guilt that some of you may feel for eating pork, rounded off with jalapeno peppers that makes you remember you're in Echo Park. With affordable prices and a parking lot, what more could you ask for. I've heard the cakes are also good here and the pastries but with several pastry and cake shops in the neighborhood, I prefer to come here for their specialty. You can't really find another good banh mi sandwich without going to Chinatown so I'll take what Kien Giang Bakery has to offer in the meantime :)
google avatar

Jasmine J.

Yelp
Came here because it's high Yelp rating and the pictures on Yelp. This review is for their banh mi sandwich (Vietnamese sandwich). Their banh mi was about 2/3 size of a regular banh mi, but their price was doubled. I liked the baguette they used for banh mi, it's crunchy but not too hard, unfortunately it was the only good thing about their banh mi. The cha was spongy and wasn't good. Instead of having multiple layers of thinly sliced meat, they had one thick slice of each meat, which took away from the flavor and texture of the sandwich. Their pickled carrots, radish, and cucumber were also too thick. Their banh mi sandwich needed more meat, pate and butter. The banh mi was way over priced for its low quality and sloppiness.

Yelp
I was looking online for places that sell durian cake. I found another place in LA county but they never responded to me so I ended up coming here. It ended up working out in my favor :) ! The durian cake is so wonderfully delicious! The cake was soft and light. The cream wasn't too heavy or sweet. Durian is also one of my favorite fruits, so it's safe to say I am *obsessed*. The durian also makes the cake so much more creamy without that gross overly frosted feel (you know when the cream or frosting on a cake is just too heavy or sweet and it feels a little gross to eat it?) I also tried some of their tres leches cake and it was sooo yummy too! This is for sure my new favorite bakery in all of LA.

Yelp
I'm from San Gabriel Valley and wanted to try a place closer to where I live now. Decided to check out this place in echo park. I never knew it existed. The banh mi sandwich is legit. To me, what makes a good banh mi is the bread. The ingredients of course are equally good but without the bread, it would ruin it. The bread is perfectly hard (not to hard or crumbly but still a crunch) on the outside and soft on the inside. It's stuffed with a generous almost of meats and veggies. I like that they put large cucumbers in it, which I'm not really used to with most banh mi sandwiches but it adds to the freshness and crunch. The price is a little bit high compared to SGV prices but it's worth it. $7 is not bad. They have a French and American sandwiches as well as a variety of vegetarian faux meats. Definitely will be my go to for the area, and if we ever get to watch a dodger game in person again, it will be my pick-up sandwich to bring to the game. Sounded like a family owns it. They all seem very nice.

Yelp
I was given a Banh Tet 3 Mau which is shaped like a long cylindrical log wrapped in banana leaves and an important symbol of abundance when ringing in the Lunar New Year. This is the vegetarian version made of sweet rice, coconut milk and mung bean. There is also a non vegetarian version made of sweet rice, mung bean and pork belly in the center. Both can be bought from here and are really delicious! Once you bring it home, you slice it up even with the banana leaves on so that it keeps its circular shape. The banana leaves then are easy to take off and you fry the 1/2 inch thick slices up with a little oil until slightly golden brown. I can easily enjoy three slices for breakfast and loved that it was not too sweet. I store the rest in a zip lock bag in the fridge for the next morning's breakfast. Next time you are there during the Lunar New Year, go ahead and try it! You will be pleasantly surprised how delicious it is.
google avatar

Malina T.

Yelp
I've been going here since I was a kid. This was the go-to spot for all of our birthday cakes, moon cakes, Chinese New Year treats, and everything in between! I was thrilled to recently learn that they offer vegan options. I tried their vegan pork banh mi sandwich, which was delicious, and I'm so glad I don't have to navigate to the 626 for these. Apparently, they also have vegan cakes which I'll definitely check out in the near future. It's great to see them thriving even after all of these years. Support this long-time local bakery!
google avatar

Roxy L.

Yelp
ATTENTION VEGANS: stop sleeping on the vegan banh mis here, please! They are way underrated/stellar and I was absolutely dumbfounded I had never heard of this place sooner than my THIRD year in LA. Too often, being vegan means being relegated to overpriced, bland, tiny portions of microgreens-but nay, not here. I ordered one of each vegan banh mi option ("pork", "spare rib", and "chicken") and they were all absolutely delicious but the the spare rib was the winner for me-so perfectly seasoned, bursting with flavor, and unlike any other banh mi I've had. The bread was also perfectly toasted and crispy, the veggies super fresh, and the sandwich was a pretty big portion. Service was extremely attentive and friendly, I'm not sure what all the negative reviews here are about but they must have been about one-off bad days. The cashiers were both very kind and efficient, even suggesting how I could get the most bang for my buck with the combo items and my food arrived just 5 minutes after I ordered. At 7$/sandwich (9$ for a combo with a dessert and drink) prices are a little steeper than the ones you'd find in the SGV or OC areas, but that's to be expected considering the neighborhood. If you're in the area and don't feel like making the drive to the SGV for a banh mi, then going here is definitely worth the trip. I hope these guys get the recognition they deserve soon!
google avatar

Hellina D.

Yelp
Craving a good vietnamese banh mi sandwich and didn't feel like driving down to the OC. Was upto trying a new place and found myself here. The vegetarian sandwich stuffing is pretty tasty and plentiful. However, the bread was hard and crusty. The fermented veggies were not fermented and literally just sliced up veggies. Likely will not go back
google avatar

Heather C.

Yelp
The only bakery that was able to do this for me for a decent price and it was amazing! Other bakeries were charging an absurd amount and could only do something really tacky looking. I went in on a Friday for it to be ready by Sunday, and Debbie was really sweet and willing to put what I had in mind together. My family LOVED it and it's totally worth a good review! A yummy inside that was fluffy and light with fresh fruit and sweet cream put smiles on everyone's faces. I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
For my mom's 69th bday this year, I pre-ordered a durian and coconut cake for her. It was sooo good! Super generous with the fillings. I love durian.. and my husband, Bullet, hates it!! Lol There's a parking lot in the front of the store. Lots of different types of Vietnamese pastries. They also sell candles.. like those number candles for $1! Definitely will order another cake from them.. maybe for my husband's birthday...muhahaha

Yelp
I would give them no stars if I can The owner lady she's so rude and so bad I give her my order list I told her 1 box each paper she did listen but put the wrong order then blame on me I saiid what I want she didn't listen to me but taking back argue with me instead so stupid and annoying she keep talking back if she listens I my orders then it wouldn't be happen you packing the wrong order then blame that on the customer I did tell her what I want why would I waste my time doing that so what even you are busy you had to do it right finish selling to the one customers first before you jump to the others She skip and me and jump to others so rude that's why she forget what I want and I tell her and she keep talking back she thinks I did wrong when she the one too they are not the only moon cakes stores in LA so I am not gonna coming back buy it again and I am not gonna recommended to any of my friends and families again next time!!! So stupid man no wonder people they were complaining in here on yelp that the customer service are so bad and horrible now I do agree with them here so it's bad !!! They should be glad and be nicer to there customers on this pandemic time that they still here and had business right !!!! Mostly now all business are going to closed down and closed forever and going bankruptcy too !!!

Yelp
Vegan Banh tet and Banh Chung! I drove out here after a work trip to get these goodies for my fam! The three color Banh tet is sweet so it serves as a dessert but I was shocked they had vegan Banh Chung with mung bean and mock meat! Most vegan Banh Chung or Banh tet doesn't have vegan meat so it was def worth a try! I loved it!! I'll be ordering this yearly for my family

Yelp
Last years' cake for my son's 5th birthday. I'm going back to get him his 6th birthday cake now! They never disappoint!

Yelp
One of my fondest memories growing up is having cake from KG Bakery. Several years ago, after moving out of Echo Park, I decided to order a cake from here. I was thrilled they were still around and their cakes were just as delicious as I remembered. Since then, a tradition I look forward to every year on my birthday is to order a strawberry cake from here and just savor it! I really appreciate that the cakes aren't overly sweet here, and are just light and fluffy! If you also love durian, I've had their durian cake and durian mooncake before, and they are delicious! This past moon festival season, I drove back to buy another box! I literally cannot find durian mooncake anywhere else, or as good as they make it here!

Yelp
We ended up here on a whim picking up sandwiches last minute for a picnic and the Vietnamese and French sandwiches were both incredible, very legit bahn mi style sandwiches and stuffed full of toppings. Service was very quick, we got our food probably 5 minutes after we ordered and it felt very clean and COVID free. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
Moon cake heaven for both Traditional (red bean, lotus, mung bean, taro) and the exotic (abalone, scallop, roasted chicken, pork belly, and XO...) with or without mixed nuts, and with 2, 1 or no eggs. In traditional brown cake or snowy white. Palm-sized and family sized. All with no preservatives and made locally (which makes it ridiculously popular as a ship-home present for overseas families.) Since this is both a retail and wholesale operation it's like visiting a factory store. If you've been at any expensive banquets hosted by real estate or banking leaders in the SGV, you know these as your takeaway gifts. Whether simply boxed in plastic clamshells or in their $1 extra gift boxes and colorful red gift bags, these are the treasure find of So Calif. Most friends mentioned they typically grew up with the Traditional versions above and that the elders were usually eating the XO exotics. That seems to come down to 2 reasons - palate sophistication related to a somewhat savory pastry item, and the fact that the XO's are quite expensive by comparison ($11-16 each) which you typically wouldn't waste on a little kid wanting something sweet. Super thin pastry perfectly formed and generous fillings ensure super happy results - especially when you visit and can form up your own gift sets from potentially 75 varieties. And they make beautiful Duff-worthy custom cakes and great Banh Mi. But moon cakes! (Keep up to 2-3 weeks at room temperature after baking; refrigeration alters both flavor and texture; freeze only as absolutely necessary.)

My dad always bought our birthday cakes from here, so on top of them being an overall good bakery I have many fond memories here too. They also have the best ham and cheese croissants. Also my dad would come here to buy fresh bread for our curries. I'm glad it's still around; I would cry if it ever closed down.

Yelp
My family has been coming to this spot FOR YEARS. And we're so in love. The cakes are nice and fluffy. Plus, they're always very accommodating when it comes to decorating special occasion cakes. They also have premade cakes of various sizes for all of those last minute planning!! Not only do they provide cakes. But delicious Vietnamese sandwiches! There isn't enough praise I can give this place. Everything I've ever ordered has been a delicious addition to all of my family's birthdays. And quick lunches too!

Yelp
$8 for a bahn mi sandwich?!?! Y'all trippin if you pay that much. Do yourself a favor and go to My Dung Sandwich in Chinatown instead where the bahn mi is only $3.50

Yelp
Kein Giang bakery Never fails to impress. Always happy with their cake's and customer service. When I don't want to pick out a design from their book and I suggest or share my idea they always exceed my expectations. So happy to always come to them for my special events cake orders.
