Kijitora - Review - East Village - New York - The Infatuation

"In the East Village, Kijitora, a Japanese cafe, has their third location—their first two are in North Brooklyn. They make coffee, tea, and matcha, and also sell snacks like onigiri. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Will Hartman

Jamaica Patty Chain Juici Patties Opens First New York Restaurants | Eater NY

"A Brooklyn-born Japanese cafe opened its third location and first Manhattan outpost at 534 East 14th Street (between Avenues A and B) on Friday, May 23 with limited service and hours. The cafe's menu includes coffee, espresso, teas, and lattes such as the tiramisu, the dirty black sesame, and a location-only azuki matcha latte. It is best known for its Neko grilled cheese sandwiches, made in the shape of a happy cat face, though that signature item is not available at this new Manhattan location; other sandwiches are offered instead. Owner Ayaha Otsuk opened the first location in Williamsburg in 2022 and followed with an East Williamsburg spot in 2023." - Nadia Chaudhury

Google
While I’m not a huge fan of their strawberry matcha (though one of my friends loved it it’s just too thick for my taste) I am HOOKED on their lavender matcha with oatmilk. They use one of the actually good brands of oatmilk (Oatly Barista), their matcha is rich and bright in flavor, and the lavender adds a delicious floral and fruity pop (tastes a bit like cereal milk to me in a way that lavender often does) while not being too sweet. It’s a nice middle of the road level. Not a ton of seating inside but it’s often still available on weekdays. I also love to grab a matcha to go to sit in Tompkins Square Park. They’re a bit expensive if you want an iced drink, but I do enjoy every time I go :)

Google
The strawberry matcha latte is not bad. The matcha is a bit weak and on the milky side but has a good green color. The strawberry syrup tastes really good like it was just freshly made. It is hard to mix into drink the type of container+straw so it’s going to be very strawberry heavy at first. There’s not a lot of seats inside but there is cute merch, stationery, and blind boxes for sale inside as well.

Google
The iced strawberry matcha latte is good and tastes fresh, the strawberry seems to be homemade. However the matcha is weak, I couldn’t really taste it despite the very pretty color. I’ll ask to add more matcha next time. I think it’s a good place to get matcha if it’s your first time trying it but it may not be the place for you if you’re looking for a strong matcha taste. The café is small but very cozy. I came on a weekday at 10am and there was place to sit.

Google
Matcha was bland. I genuinely couldn’t taste the flavor and I didn’t get any additional flavors so that doesn’t make sense. They charge an extra $1 for ice drinks and extra to add more matcha. The cup it comes in is cute, but definitely don’t go here if you are looking for good quality matcha.

Google
I ordered the mango matcha with regular milk and sweetened. The mango puree was thick and overwhelmed the matcha. It also made the drink very thick. My drink was largely ice and mango. The matcha quality seemed good though. I’d consider getting just a regular matcha latte

Google
I read that this was one of the best places for Matcha in the city. I agree! I had an iced strawberry 🍓 matcha, it was delicious, the strawberry & matcha fresh and flavorful. Not much room to sit, hence the lower atmosphere rating.

Google
The matcha here isn’t amazing on its own as a latte. The quality is good but not amazing. I would only get their specialty drinks here, they’re actually really good! The mango is my fave.

Google
Dirty sesame latte is good 👍🏻. Strawberry matcha nice too , it’s just their strawberry is not as thick as the one at Brooklyn branch

Yelp
So glad I was able to try this place in the East Village! I loved the aesthetics of the mini-shelf displayed in their shop and the diversity of their menu including coffee and matcha drinks. My friend and i eventually settled on their Mango Matcha Latte and Strawberry Matcha Latte, which we didn't have to wait too long in line for on a weekend morning. Our drinks were aesthetic and colorful, with the orange/yellow mango and red strawberry colors popping out! My Strawberry Matcha Latte tasted fresh, and I appreciate the even blend of flavors of both strawberry and matcha. The texture of the strawberry puree was a bit rough, but the matcha part was smooth. I'd love to try their other non-matcha drinks and visit their Brooklyn location in the future!

Yelp
On the quest for the best matcha in NY and my friend recommended this place (and saw this on Tik Tok, so I HAD to stop by). Went on a Friday around 9AM, and there was a little line, nothing too crazy. The servers were very nice and the inside is cute (definitely no frills). Got the iced strawberry matcha latte with oat milk - it was very sweet. The strawberry syrup tasted fresh but definitely drank on the sweeter side, that's alright! Anytime you add some fun fruit into matcha, what else would you expect :) If you want more of a sweet treat, definitely get this.

Yelp
Service: 4.3/5 Food: 4.1/5 Price: $$ ($5-10) Pretty small shop + yet they have enough space for a counter + a few seats. Cute cat theme which they carry throughout the shop + cups. What I Ordered: - Matcha Americano: earthy + not astringent, not strong in flavor however it left me buzzing, very natural taste

Yelp
It's nice that there's such cute cat merch! There's also decent seating and not a long wait. I've been to one of the locations in Brooklyn and it was pretty good so I was excited to see this pop up so close to me in the city. I'm sad I didn't get the regular cat cup - they must've ran out and it was just regular cups. I got the mango matcha iced latte and something about the temperature was just off. The mango purée is on the bottom and after you work hard to mix it up, the whole drink becomes a smoothie. ($9) The tuna mayo rice ball was decently sized - pretty much rice with canned tuna and mayonnaise. ($4). No cat grilled cheese here - I think I'll come back to try it one more time and I hate to say it but nothing is really setting this location apart from matcha places in the city.

Yelp
The matcha is good but didn't have the best experience with the barista. There seemed to be a miscommunication about oat milk and whole milk - I asked for oat milk but she was very adamant that I said whole milk and kept telling me that, wasn't super friendly. I ended up just taking the whole milk, but I felt a bit gaslighted and that she thought I was lying.

Yelp
(cafe hopping while I was in nyc for a week) I walked a longgg way to get here, had to cross it off my list since I saw good reviews/recommendations & can say it was worth trying! ordered an iced mango matcha latte and miso salmon onigiri. latte was definitely on the sweeter side, but I liked the mango syrup a lot. the matcha itself was yum, nothing bad about it but also not outstanding in flavor. onigiri immediately fell apart on me but was still of great value & a solid option when in need of a small bite. a very small, cozy space, I was lucky to grab an empty table to briefly recharge. worker who took my order was very kind.

Yelp
Loved this place!!! The tiramisu latte is good! Saw someone had the hojicha latte and it look creamy and gonna try that next time I come back ..

Yelp
Good place to get Macha around New York. I found the matcha to be a little bit watery and milky. Overall, I'll come back again.

Yelp
My friends wanted to try Kijitora for their matcha on our last day. We went to their newest location in east village early to start off our day. We were expecting a long wait but there was no line at all. I got a regular matcha latte with agave as my sweetener and my friend both got a strawberry matcha latte. The color of the matcha looked pretty promising, it was a pretty dark green color. However, we all thought our drinks were just ok. The matcha is a little weak and it tastes more on the milky side. They also used these paper like straws and the lid bent it over time so the flow was also restricted when I took a sip. We were all disappointed and didn't think it was worth it

Yelp
Had Kijitora (Brooklyn location) bookmarked for a while so I was so happy to hear they opened one in Manhanttan! Loved the variety of their coffee and matcha drinks and ultimately decided to try their original matcha latte, red bean matcha latte, and dirty black sesame latte. The matcha latte was smooth and well mixed; it struck a nice balance between being too creamy or too watery. Matcha flavors were good but wish they were a little more prominent (compared to other matcha places around town). You have the option to sweeten your drink. The base of the red bean matcha reminded me of the Cantonese red bean ice drink 红豆冰 - blended red bean with milk. They add matcha to it, which nicely complimented the sweet red bean flavors!! Be sure to give it a good mix to get the best ratio of ingredients tho!! The dirty black sesame was probably my favorite out of the three! Their black sesame paste is so refined that it mixes and suspends nicely in the coffee. It has a very fragrant nutty flavor from the grind up sesame. The salmon onigiri featured tender and well seasoned fish. The beef had nice sukiyaki flavors but I still preferred the salmon. Appreciated how they heated it up for us. The store has a decent amount of seating as well as a bench outside. The cat and matcha merch are super cute. Shoutout to their sustainable straws! I look forward to coming back to check out their other drinks and snacks!

Yelp
Expect long line but quick service! I ordered the mango matcha and it was delicious, I would come back again. The miso salmon onigiri was also really yummy, fresh, and worth the $4. They have some stickers and other knick knacks inside you can buy, and about 3 small tables.

Yelp
The mango and strawberry matcha were so smooth. The rice balls were bigger than we expected! Loved it

Yelp
Kijitora is finally in Manhattan! The quality is just as good as in Brooklyn's locations. The strawberry matcha latte is still my favorite, but I also tried the mango matcha latte and enjoyed it. Mix well, and you will get a creamy matcha flavor perfectly blended with the sweet fruit flavor. There is very little seating inside. The staff are friendly.

Yelp
So excited to see that Kijitora opened up in the East Village! I've had their Brooklyn locations bookmarked for the longest time but timing never worked out. I ordered their iced strawberry matcha latte with soy milk and it was a tasty and refreshing drink for a hot summer day. The strawberry puree was fresh and paired well with the matcha. Make sure you mix it well, otherwise you'll likely be sipping on the strawberry puree and won't be tasting the matcha itself. There's also wifi and some seating available. Can't wait to come back to try out their other drinks.

Yelp
This is a very highly recommended Matcha place claiming to have the best strawberry Matcha latte. There are a couple locations but the newest and closest location if you're saying in central New York is this location. It is very small inside. This location has very limited seating, so if you're trying to get work done or need space I feel like this wouldn't be the place to go. They do have a pretty wide variety of menu offerings and I had even seen some seasonal offerings. Prices are definitely higher than the average you're looking about paying $9 for a regular standard Matcha. One thing I will give them is that the quality is super good. You can tell the Matcha used is good and what stood out to me was the strawberry purée. It was fresh tasting and naturally made. You can even see the seeds from the strawberry at the bottom of the drink and there's no artificial pink color to it. this wouldn't be my go to Macha place considering the price but for a good quality sweet pick me up. I would definitely return back.

Yelp
The store is cute with cat themed things here and there. The service was very easy and the drink came out super quick. The matcha is pretty good and the strawberry blended very well with it. I like my matchas sweetened so it was a nice touch. They also hv a small bar with extra sugar and syrup for people to adjust their drinks and they have seating which isn't very common in cafes in ny

Yelp
I have not been to this one, but I have been to both Brooklyn locations. Their houjicha latte is delicious and I love the salmon onigiri! My daughter loves the mango matcha iced and the beef onigiri. . I purchased their packaged houjicha and I have it every morning while I am at home. Looking forward to my next trip to NYC to enjoy the 14th St location.

Yelp
Great matcha! It's just the same as the Brooklyn location on Driggs. Staff were super friendly and wonderful, especially given the busy soft opening. They have a Matcha Peach Fizz right special that's very refreshing!

Yelp
The strawberry Matcha was amazing. The homemade strawberry purée was really fresh. I also got a tuna onigiri, which I enjoyed. Excited to come back!

Yelp
Mango matcha latte was good but a bit too sweet for me. Miso salmon onigiri was freshly made and delicious also

Yelp
The first time I went to this place it was really great, I got the tiramisu latte and a beef rice ball. Both were delicious and filling. The inside is really nice and the staff was quick and courteous. The second time around the cashier was a bit cold- not even a greeting and seemed to rush through the interaction, and then our rice balls were made with almost no beef on the inside and mainly rice, felt stingy for sure. They were a a bit busier but I don't think it's an excuse to cut corners like that because of high traffic. Would try again but left a bad taste.
